Have been to Super Moon Buffet several times over the years. The latest visit was last weekend, on Mother's Day and I think it was the busiest I have seen it. We had a later lunch and by the time we left, there was still a long line to get in. It has a nice variety of dishes to select from. One of our favorite parts of the buffet is the hibachi area - my husband, our older son and I all had our own selection of ingredients stir fried for noodle dishes. Tried Super Moon Buffet this evening and I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the $150 was for... because it definitely wasn't the food or the experience. Let's start with the obvious: it's a buffet. We're getting our own plates, our own refills, doing the whole "DIY dining" thing. Fine. But for that price, you'd expect at least decent food. Instead, it was bland, forgettable, and sitting somewhere between lukewarm and questionable. Now the part that really sealed it: as we were literally getting up to leave, an employee approached us and demanded a tip. Not suggested. Not politely mentioned. Demanded. Then another staff member came over, pointed at the receipt, and told me I needed to tip. I'm actually a generous tipper, happily so, when it's earned. But being confronted like that? That's not service, that's pressure with a side of audacity. I even tried to clarify, thinking maybe gratuity wasn't included and I misunderstood. I was told, "No, service is completely separate." Okay... then maybe make that crystal clear somewhere? A sign, a note, literally anything. I would have gladly run to my car to grab cash and come back if it had been handled respectfully. But after being cornered and told I had to tip? Absolutely not. If your business model relies on tipping, act like it. Don't ambush customers on their way out like they're skipping out on a bill. Between the overpriced, underwhelming food and the aggressive tipping situation, this was easily one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a while. read more

What I like about Super Moon: service, food assortment, and the Mongolian grill option to build your own dish. Food was a hit and miss for us. Some food tasted dry and old even though it looked deceptively freshly made. Pan fried blue crab had a hint of ammonia smell (sign of not so fresh seafood). The fried shrimp was like it was stuffed with old leftover shrimp. The dumplings were dense and crusty. But I made my own stir fry with the Mongolian grill which was good, even though they need to clean up the ingredient bar area. Fried chicken wings were juicy and crispy. They no longer have any dim sum (in the past they used to have about 4-5 steamed dim sum items). Service was good in clearing dishes and refilling drinks. Overall, with tip was about $60 for 2 people on a Sunday. Definitely not worth it for the quality of food. read more

I decided to give this place a try after driving by for years. I stopped by to get lunch buffet takeout and the first thing I noticed was how busy this place is! I guess there must be lots of loyal customers. When we were leaving, the line to get in was out the door! Most of the food is very basic and a lot of the items on the salad bar looked old and weathered. They also have a weird pricing guide, they charge a lot more if you get seafood, but I'll be honest those tiny shrimp did not look appetizing at all and I do not think they warrant a higher price! There were two options for take out during lunch: per pound ($5.99 without seafood and $9.99 with seafood) or they have an option to just fill the box ($10.99 without seafood, $14.99 with seafood). It's just odd because the cream cheese wontons are labeled as seafood even though I'm pretty certain there was just cream cheese in there. The one redeeming quality is that they have Mongolian bbq, which I love! You pick out frozen meat, noodles, veggies and sauce and they cook it for you on a hot stone! This is one of my favorites and I don't think we have any true Mongolian bbq spots left in the twin cities! So really I would give 1-2 stars BUT my love for Mongolian bbq bumped it up to a 3! read more

It's not the worse buffet I've had, but could be better. We went later in the lunch rush, around 1 on a Saturday. You pay first and then seat yourself. Being winter, the first section has a draft and was completely empty compared to middle and end. It was pretty packed inside. When you get seated, the staff were pretty attentive on drinks and removing plates. Tables were cleaned as customers left, that side of the house is well managed. Food: There's 4-5? Hot bar lines plus salad, sushi rolls, Mongolian grill, and dessert. There's a nice assortment of different things; stir fry clams, noodles, fried chicken in a sauce, pizza and chicken nuggets for pickier eaters. That being said, the food quality was hit or miss. This part drove down my rating. The fried chicken pieces seemed mostly breading. Some items were overcooked like the fried jalopenos. We ate later during the lunch rush, so you could tell that they kept food in the warmers, as when they brought out a new batch the appearances were a little rough. The fruit for dessert had some overly ripe pieces which were hard to miss with the lighting. Overall if you don't want to travel far, it's an option. But would recommend driving an extra 10minutes to a different venue or maybe arriving earlier before the lunch rush. read more

Let's start by knowing there are "certain times" to go to any buffet no matter what kind it is. I violated my time rule this time because I was in the area and hungry, the time was 11:10...My usual times are 12:00-1:30 for lunch and 5:45-6:45 for dinner. WHY? because the food is being eaten by customers and the rotation of hot food has started in earnest. Some of the food I took was the first off that offering and it was not hot, just luke warm, my bad as the overall display looked great! Went here for dinner and it was okay. I had no idea what to expect but it was a solid experience for a buffet. I am not a huge buffet fan but they had a lot of great options so it is definitely worth a try. The people working there were extremely friendly! This is a typical chinese restaurant in America. Nothing too special but you will find TONS of options here. Not too bad of a restaurant and not too good either. Service is good. Ambiance is nice, service is perfunctory but efficient. Food varies from tasteless breaded shrimp to wonderfully crispy fried fish fillets. The trick with any of these Chinese buffets is to zero in on what tastes good to you, and then feast on that. For instance, I tried a single breaded shrimp, which was cold, dry and tasteless. In contrast, the fried fish fillets were delicious. Thus it went with each dish. Some were delicious, some so-so, and a few were...well, let's say you have to examine the food before putting it on your plate. In fact, your first plate should be crowded with single spoonfuls of whatever interests you. Learn from that. My personal favorite has always been coconut shrimp, which today, Saturday at about 2pm, they had lots of. I piled it on my plate and gorged. It was fairly good. I was a bit surprised that their pepper beef was good, too. The baking soda treatment to soften beef worked well. The pot stickers were actually moist, where in some buffets they get dried out. Most of the food looked decently prepared, and it was piled high in the serving trays. Sushi was a bit sparse, but good. I love fresh ginger and fake wasabi, and the dipping sauce was decent. It should go without saying, avoid stuff like pizza at a Chinese buffet, just as you avoid egg rolls at Denny's. Respect the domain. That said, they had plenty of basic salad stuff, and a good spread of fruits. I finished with a small helping of soft serve ice milk and a little square of tiramisu. This was such an amazing surprise! There is so much food to choose from. The decor is nice and the goldfish pond is a great addition. The only problem we ran into is that they only serve soda. Our little one doesn't drink soda so we got her water instead. The service is pretty quick to clean your table. The server that takes your drink order is a bit on the rude side. Not much to eat, no good dessert choices, the only thing that was somewhat ok was the make your own hibachi and that turned out bad because they didn't clean the cook top and my food was extra spicy due to someone else's food. Not easy at all to find balance at a buffet place. Price value, Quality, Cleanliness of place restrooms, seating area and plate dishes and service. IMHO Moon buffet has it. I was surprised at how good the variety and quality of food is. The stir fry Mongolian Grill is a plus to keep your meal healthy and the grill master keeps a smooth flow of people to perfection. Nobody waits more than 3-5 minutes. The rest of the food is amazing, and the salad bar is worth it by itself. Loved the sushi bar as well. Desserts are kept more on the fruit side instead of heavy processed things, which I appreciated as well. The cleanliness from restrooms to seating area to the dishes not being mushy was perfection too. This was my third attempt to go in there, other times had been dinner time on weekend. If you go there at peak time, you might hate the wait and line. I went 1pm on Friday. No line, the place was busy but not overflowing. My server was top notch with drinks and any needs. Please tip accordingly. The place smells fresh and the background music is calming. Parking is huge so that should be no problem. Location is easy off 394 highway. We went to Super Moon buffet in on Wayzata Blvd. I have been there a number of time. The last time, my wife became ill after eating there. She knew my experience had ben different and wanted to please me, so took me there. The food, including chicken, noodles and other dishes was cold. We believe the shrimp dishes were either damaged or diseased. Once home my wife became seriously ill and vomited. I became ill, and am spending most of my time in bathroom, even hours after we were at lunch at Super Moon. I would recommend that no one go there, until theirhealth issues are resolved. read more
