I went here because it was close to my hotel, and it most certainly did not disappoint. From the moment you walk in, the experience is great. Every guest who walks in their door is greeted by the entirety of the working staff, and the same thing happens when any guest departs the restaurant. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive to customers, and does a great job of making guests feel welcome and valued. For dinner, I started with their 2 piece teriyaki chicken skewers. The skewers come with a generous amount of chicken, which is perfectly crispy and has an incredible flavor. For my main entree, I ordered the Spicy Ramen with miso broth, as it came highly recommended from my waiter. The portion size of the ramen was very generous, and it came with pork, bean sprouts, seaweed, sausage, and green onions, all mixed into their fantastic broth. I had heard Portland had a great food scene prior to arriving, and this place certainly started my trip on a high note. I will most certainly be back when I find myself in Portland again!

From the second my partner and I walked in at 4:30 PM, we were greeted by a server who made it immediately clear we were bothering them. When seated, I asked for a dinner menu thinking they'd given us a lunch menu by mistake. I was told dinner doesn't start until 5:00 PM (something listed nowhere online, despite their online presence highlighting all their dinner options). And since when does lunch run up until 5pm? The latest I've ever seen is 3 or 4. The final straw was asking about the only vegan option on the menu, which was labeled "spicy." When I asked how spicy it was, the same server gave a completely patronizing response: "I'm not sure your level of spice..." My partner and I looked at each other in shock at how openly rude this person was. We got up, picked up our stuff, and walked out before ordering. I'm 51 years old, and I can count on one hand the number of times in my life I've walked out of a restaurant due to bad service before even getting food. Sadly, this was one of them. The gap between how great this place was portrayed online and how poorly we were treated in person was staggering.

We ordered the pho with steak and brisket, and it was delicious! We also got the vermicelli with pork, which had a lot of flavor. The portions are pretty generous, so the vermicelli would be great to share. Overall, we had a great experience at Luc Lac. If you're craving Vietnamese food, I definitely recommend checking this place out!

Let me tell you, if they had this place in Seattle, it would be poppin' for sure. Loved the decor, and the service was amazing. We were a party of 8, and they did the most to get us seated. They even combined two tables for us without too much wait. We appreciated this so much! This is one of those places where you order at the counter, and they bring your food to your table, although they also seat you. So you wait in line to order, and then you wait a little longer to get a seat. The menu is on a huge, lit-up billboard behind the counter, so you'll see folks crowded in that area trying to read it. The food was alright, no one was particularly blown away. I got a pho, and I would say it was okay. I think you come here more for the vibe and scratching that craving than for out-of-this-world food/flavors. The music is good, the servers were all super friendly, and it's a great vibe. Fyi, there's mostly street parking.

If you're not downtown, they also have a smaller location on the east side! To start I got the takoyaki, or fried octopus balls. It was crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, with a tender and chewy piece of octopus, topped with a sweet sauce and fish flakes. Yum!! For my main, I wanted to try one of their broth-less udons and chose one of the specials, the Mentaiko kama-tama Udon--house-made flat udon noodles tossed in and onion oil, bonito, and soy dashi sauce. The noodles are topped with Men-taiko (spicy Tarako caviar), soft egg, tobiko, tempura puffs, green onions, and nori. I also added ikura (as recommended). I've never had flat udon noodles or broth-less udon but I'm forever changed. The minimal broth allows the toppings to be the stars of the show, and here was no exception. The flavors were complex, but balanced, and the variety of textures kept me coming back for another bite. The soy dashi sauce was full of umami and a subtle spicy kick, the fish eggs added pops of saltiness, and the tempura puffs and green onions added some crunch and offset the richness from the other toppings. The house-made noodles also made a huge difference, they were chewy but tender, and soaked up the soy dashi perfectly. I could not recommend Shigezo Izakaya enough!

Food was solid, but I feel like the ramen was missing a bit of pizzazz. Lovely service and a nice casual ambiance. The last ramen took a while to come, but with a larger party I imagine it was a simple mixup around orders. Okonomiyaki Fries - these weren't bad, the okonomiyaki part was just the toppings. I did expect actual okonomiyaki pieces (flour, cabbage, etc) mixed in. Would have preferred crispier fries (they were a bit soft) and also some extra salt. Might skip in the future or try another appetizer instead. Zen - the basic ramen for building! We added bok choy and an egg for a lighter meal. Nice that they give a whole egg (for $3) because the preset ramens come with half. Noodles were great, and pretty filling given the default price point. Add ons are great to enhance the taste, but won't impact fullness too much. Yuzu Shoyu - personally thought the preset ramens were nothing special. Barely any greens, felt like just a garnish. One piece of chashu and half an egg. Noodles were tasty though! Broth was on the lighter side.

Tonkotsu Shoyu (4/5): A deeply comforting and classic bowl of ramen. The soft-boiled egg was perfectly yolky, but the dish would've been elevated even further with a slightly more generous serving of chashu pork. Tonkotsu Red (5/5): A unique variation for those who love a bit of heat. It shares the same chewy noodle and vegetable foundation as the Shoyu, but has a spicy broth that builds and ramps up the more you slurp. Went here because apparently people are bragging about this place and somehow is hyped to no end: so I went. Came in at around 6:15pm on a Saturday which I expect was gonna be a bit busy; but waiting 45 minutes in line is not acceptable. The problem is mainly their workflow here; lack of communication, no sense of urgency and the fact that when we were finally already in front of the line, the person who's about to take our order suddenly left her post to go to her break; and no one took over. Had to ask them after 10 more minutes of waiting since every employee was just passing over us. Finally someone took our order. A bowl of ramen and a rice bowl; that's not a hard task especially when it's not that busy. At the 30 minute mark of waiting after we ordered, I had to go back to the counter and ask what's the hold up; employee said "well we're quite busy at the moment". I looked at her directly and said, "there's about 3 tables inside here and about 6 more tables outside that are vacant." She then goes inside to check and I went back at my table. Took another 20 minutes for the food to arrive. At this point I'm livid. The ramen is crazy spicy; you can't even taste any other flavors on the ramen. Noodle was stiff and the nori was soaked to oblivion. The rice on the donburi was UNDERCOOKED!! I immediately went back to show them, and all she said was "I think we should've left it a couple more minutes". WTF? Either this place doesn't have a proper timer, or the cook doesn't even know how to cook rice; which is very disturbing. I understand it's a ramen place; but if it's on your menu; you need to make sure that your food is cooked! It's rice for God's sake; not a gourmet meal. Every one who worked here looked like someone's kid that just got hired at this place; and no one has no idea how the hell to run this place properly. That's almost 2 hours of my life that i'll never get back; from the moment I came in to the time I got my food; absolutely ridiculous and just an absolute waste of time.
