One of fun parts of married life: SURPRISES! While many think that you can surprise your girlfriend/fiancé a lot before you get married are wrong. My wife and I have been married for over six years and I am still surprising her in the littlest and BIGGEST ways. On weekends, we typically just go to a burger joint, but...Change is always a good thing. While my wife wanted to grab something to eat, I found a place where we can enjoy the town and eat. A small date night. This place definitely add more love to our marriage as my wife loved it a lot. With the help of Yelp, we head over to Downtown Orange to Super Antojitos.
Located two blocks west of the Metrolink Orange Station on the south side of Chapman Ave at Parker St., you will find an establisment that looks more like a French Chateau than a stereotypical Mexican Restaurant. Shame on me for Stereotypes and it looks like we're going to have a fun dinner. Parking is limited to about 10-12 cars. With Downtown Orange just a few blocks away, my wife and I got to explore a little of Antique Stores and Classic Cars on the way to Super Antojitos.
As we walked up, we noticed a small patio as if you were going to have coffee or a quick snack. Super Antojitos does have a reservation system through the Yelp App. I did make a reservation, but we didn't need one as there were plenty of tables. We were greeted by one of the Employees and from there he treated us like, Familia! Gracias Super Antojitos! There was another Antojitos that I was familiar with, but that was a big box chain and this one is owned by the family since 1985.
As we sat down, we got a complimentary plate of chips and salsa to start off our day. I wish I remembered our servers name, but he was funny from beginning to end. He even tested me in Spanish and my wife was able to respond in kind. My wife got a soda and I got Horchata!! My fave! The dining room is evenly spaced apart and you can see the kitchen flaming hot with the servers bringing out hot plates with the meat still cooking on them. There are several TVs playing the games, but I still think we came to someone's house instead of a bar/restaurant. It's so HOMEY!! Is that even the right spelling?! I saw a guy walking around and possibly the owner talking with a family in the other room. Then I saw a picture of him and a Government Award for their business. Wow...We came to the right place! Our server took our order and my wife order her favorite Mexican Dish: Camarones al Mojo de Ajo ($19.99) with Flour Tortilla. As for more, I ordered something I didn't realized until I wrote this review. I ordered the Pollo Cacheton ($18.99). The Founders, of Super Antojitos, are Guillermina and Jose Luis "El Cacheton" Rodriguez. I must've had some sort of connection on the first visit and it's a GOOD THING!!
The wait for our food was about 10-15 minutes, but we had the nicest, last minute romance, date night we didn't expect...Actually, more of my wife didn't expect. Our food came and it looks better in person than our phone could take. My wife had beans, rice, and Garlic Shrimp with the flour tortillas. Her shrimp was in a separate bowl taking in the sauce and I could smell it's deliciousness. As for me, my Pollo Cacheton is a special plate. The name it self caught my eye and probably why the owner was named after it as well. Pollo Cacheton is breaded chicken sliced with bell peppers, onion, mushrooms, and sauteed in a creamy spicy sauce. It came with a wonderful side of salad, rice, and beans. Wow!! The Pollo Cacheton is amazing! Super Antojitos prepared it just right. I barely chewed and my teeth just slices it more in my mouth. I was expecting to be chewing, but it was pure heaven. At times, the heat/spice kicked in, but this dish was meant for it! The salad helped cool me down and the rice got me jiving for more! I even got some of my wife's Camerones Al Mojo de Ajo Sauce and poured onto my place. It was good to taste a variety of dishes.
When you find your life partner, make life exciting everyday. You'll have those normal routines, but that's OK! It's a balance of life. When you surprise your significant other, with a mere random stop to a restaurant or a store, that means you love that person and a new adventure is about to begin...even if its a Grocery store that you don't visit. This restaurant wasn't a regular Mexican eatery, it was SUPER!!
