A greasy spoon, but one that grows on ya. I started eating at the Sunshine Cafe in 2001 when I was a freshman at BSU. The decor is rather outdated and the music is mostly oldies. The food itself is nothing special, though there is a wide selection to choose from, all at reasonable prices. The best thing about this place is that it offers a late night / early morning escape--a place to go and sober up at 3:00 am on a Sunday, or to have those quasi-philosophical conversations with close friends. This place represents the heart of Muncie. It's a meeting place for old timers as well as Ball State students. Very relaxed. Feels like Mama comes there everyday just to cook for you. This is a fine place to eat breakfast food. I had standard bacon, eggs, toast, hash browns and pancakes. All of it was good but it didn't seem to be overly amazing or anything. The service was satisfactory; they were friendly and kept our drinks filled. The dining room doesn't look like it's been redecorated since 1991; it had a little Twin Peaks vibe but not in an interesting way. I don't live in Muncie so this was probably the only time I'll ever come here, but I'd recommend it to others if they want breakfast. I'd just also mention that it's not going to blow your mind. Actually this is a small chain EATERIE, but maintains 1970's appearance, style & menu. It's a place outa the past, but that's good in some ways. Lotsa older folks were eating here, so it has to have good something. My BLT WAS GOOD, with the bacon being excellent. My veggie soup was "waterie," like out of a generic can. When you have children in the kitchen , MAKE SURE THEY ARE WORKING AND MAKE Sure your food is NOT cold. I live right behind here. I come in all the time. The one night my bf and I came in with our friend it was around 10 before mashed potatoes are done being served. There were only 3 tables and us and each one of is were waiting a long time. When we FINALLY do get our food everything is cold. Country fried steak and the gravy, both cold. My steak was cold and my dinner rolls were hard...What in the actual fuck? My bf and our friend both got the country fried steak, one of them was much larger than the other and they skimped out on mashed potatoes and only gave a very small portion on one plate while the other was a good size. Same exact order and we ended up with one skimpy plate, the waiter knew it too because she gave my bf another biscuit when we didn't ask for it. Such a disappointment. I always have a good experience here UNTIL they started hiring children who obviously didn't give a fuck about their customers. If I could I would do a negative tip. read more

My pork chop and eggs was the perfect way to start my travel day. Chop was moist. Eggs over medium were right on the money -- just slightly runny. This café has pretty good food. I would DEFINITELY recommend the fried chicken! There are a few minor problems... I think that the waitress was new but I am honestly not sure. We sat down to order our food and after we ordered, it took them about an hour to bring it out to us. The food really didn't look like it took that long to cook but it was magnificent. In a land filled with Mc-restaurants and generic food, there is a savior in Sunshine Cafe. We ate here recently during a conference at Ball State Univ. and the food was phenom! Although the service is a little slow, if not standoffish, it almost adds to the no nonsense approach to the place. The pancakes are amazing, as is the philly cheesesteak omelette. Welllllll you know....it is what it is. A little breakfast type place, clearly more geared towards seniors during the day and drunk college kids at night. All the waitresses were probably in high school or college and really didn't take their jobs seriously. I wasn't expecting much anyways, I was just hungry after going to a show at Emens. I was a little put off by how dirty the carpet was and the fact that about 3 ft from my table was a giant cart of cleaning supplies, dirty dishes and trash can. Not exactly appetizing. I used to live down the street from this place in college. It's open 24 hours, the coffee is never ending and the food is pretty good. Sunshine Cafe is like a dive bar, in a good way...the cast of characters that hangs out there is entertaining in a good way and the decor is simple. The pancakes were good as were the chicken strips. I read a few yelp reviews and didn't expect anything great but thought we're in the middle of the country maybe some good home-made comfort food would be served. Yeah - no. Place is a throw back and they leave a thermal carafe of coffee on your table which was nice. Our server didn't seem too happy to take our order and didn't know what some items were but that's ok I guess. The bacon was good- 4 crispy pieces with my perfectly over easy eggs accompanied by the thinnest slices of wheat toast and a small potion of previously frozen has browns. Thank Goodness I ordered the toast plain as the scoop of yellow atop my sons pancakes was NOT butter but a margarine like substitute- Yuck! The biscuits dry and sausage links brown n serves. After living in Muncie for 10 months, we finally got around to trying this place, and were mostly satisfied. My wife got the country fried steak, and said it was very good. She also enjoyed the green beans and mashed potatoes. I got the fried chicken, and was less impressed. The meat was of the mystery variety, like what you get in a TV dinner, and not full breasts as I was expecting. And the batter was kinda weird, more like seafood batter than what I'd expect on fried chicken. It tasted okay, I suppose, but not great, and I probably won't order it again. They offered sliced tomatoes as a side, which is great, and they were good. The mac & cheese wasn't the best I've had, and was an unnatural shade of orange.
