I have enjoyed the Bistro at Summerhill Pyramid Winery for years but will not likely be back. When I got here, the restaurant was completely empty (ok, there were two other tables) - on the Friday night of the Canada Day long weekend - and that should have been my first clue. The service was poor, especially considering how empty the restaurant was. I waited at the front for a full five minutes before someone came to greet me and take me to a table, even though there were two staff members standing at the nearby bar and chatting. At the table, they have a system whereby you need to flip a disk to green when you want service and then to red when you don't. I've seen that before in a Brazilian steakhouse, but never in a fine dining establishment. So I turned my disk to green, and waited. And waited. And waited. I think the system only works when your staff are paying attention :-( I was dining solo, and they had a very limited number of choices other than sushi rolls or large mains for solo dining. I love sushi and was looking for a light meal, so thought this would be a good bet. When my waitress brought my roll and veggie tempura, I had to ask for chopsticks, soy sauce, napkins and a dipping bowl. All of which she seemed surprised that I was asking for. I'm sure my review of the food is coloured by my experience, but in my opinion, the tempura was really greasy and the fish in my roll tasted old (it had a very strong fishy smell). At one point, when I was nearly done eating as much as I was interested in eating, a different server came over, asked me how I was doing and said that the bar was about to close...(at 7:30 when all of their signage says they're open until 9pm). I told her that the fish in my roll was really stinky and she clearly didn't know what to do with that information so shrugged, reminded me that the bar was closing and left the table when I said that I didn't want another drink. And that was the last I saw of anyone for 35 minutes. Full stop. With so many amazing restaurants in Kelowna Summerhill has gone downhill and if it were me, I'd take a pass. It's such a shame as the view is spectacular here and I would love to love the restaurant. read more

I got somewhat hot under the collar ranting about the winery Sunset Bistro is located within. This will be a test of impartiality attempting to separate the charlatanism of the winery from the quality of the restaurant. And let's be clear, this divide is vast. Like deserts of Arrakis vast. On one side, Summerhill is bonkers, and not the adorable crazy like Perry in The Fisher King. I'm talking homeopathy, dowsing, phrenology, Pythagoras bonkers. I'm serious; Pythagoras was crazy, flat out nuts. He was afraid of beans, hated the square root of two, and had a guy killed over a disagreement about a triangle. So best avoid that lest you start believing in sacred geometries, ley-lines, or astrology, basically everything in the Rifts role-playing game. It's important to understand the discrepancy as the Sunset Bistro is good...but there lies the conundrum, the crisis of principles. Does one patronize Sunset Bistro knowing where it is? At the end of the day, it's a good restaurant benefiting from a breathtaking view (usually, it was raining that day) and impressively plated cuisine. The dining area is rustic but comfortable. At the far end, you can spot a more lavish dining area bordered by an awe-inspiring stained-glass window featuring the signature pyramid. We took images of our meals. Unfortunately, I cannot match them to dishes on their website, so their menu has obviously changed, but as plain and clear as peer-reviewed scientific journals, the food is well plated and presented with care. I admire restaurants that pull ingredients from their neighborhoods, and Sunset Bistro claims theirs are sourced from their own biodynamic gardens and wildlife preserves, another concept worthy of...wait, what? What was that? "Biodynamic"? I must admit not hearing that one before. I had better do some--DARN IT! It's more pseudoscience! Using planetary locations and lunar cycles to determine sowing cycles? It quite literally uses magic. I'm trying my best to tolerate organic farming despite the overwhelming evidence pointing to its dangerous side-effects including nutrient leaching, soil conservation, and the massive increase in land use required to produce food over its safe GMO alternatives, substitutions credited for saving hundreds of millions of lives in regions cursed with overpopulation and untillable land. But no, you're right, don't trust Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution; instead, embrace geomancy. I can accomplish the same effect with a traditional organic farm and a deck of Magic: The Gathering cards. Seriously, folks, you have to read up on the field preparations for this lunacy...hmm...lunacy...madness brought on by the moon. And before you start with the defense of biodynamics, remember they were invented by someone claiming to be a clairvoyant that taught that a disease may be part of a patient's "karma" and that interfering with said illness would be unwise because treating only the physical body would require the patient to compensate in a future life. And you must grind quartz crystal that's buried in a cow horn through the summer to aid in plant growth. If I ever walk into the restaurant again, I'll bellow at the top of my lungs, "When single shines the triple sun. What was sundered and undone shall be whole. The two made one by Gelfling hand or else by none!" before leaving. If you got the Rifts joke, that one should be easy. At the end of the day, the food at Sunset Bistro was good, not terribly expensive, and we found the décor pleasant. I am sure this restaurant will be appealing to those looking to center their chi. Obviously, I won't be back, especially given the broad choices closer to Kelowna. But I can't fault the chef on shift that day or the staff. They made good food. I just wished they had sacrificed a goat to Demeter using the old ways in order to secure a higher quality crop. Probably would have made the difference. read more

It's the consumate winery experience. Not a lot of food and the prices are a bit high but you wouldn't come here to get full. You come here to peck, sip, blend flavours and enjoy the VIEW. There is a fairly extensive wine list. Try them in the tasting room first if you want to be sure or if you're like us...take a risk and order full glasses to go with your food. We were not disappointed with either of the wines we ordered, a 2010 syrah and a 2012 baco noir. The service we received was exquisite. This was a professional, nothing we asked for couldn't be accommodated. I don't know if it's all like that but I don't have anything but good to say about the service. read more

Great sheltered patio to soak up just enough but not too much of the Kelowna sun. Amazing view overlooking the lake and winery grounds. The salad was fresh and an array of vegetables with just the right amount of dressing. Deduct half a star for the mains which were good but not awesome and no homemade ice teas served (they serve a herbal bottled tea). Unpretentious and laid back atmosphere. When we arrived we were told that we were being seated inside and hadn't requested patio seating - no-one had asked me about this when I made the on-line reservation or when I phoned to confirm details. The menu seems very odd and both the food and wine selections are very pricey for what is not a first class establishment! I noted on my reservation that this was an anniversary occasion - nothing was said or done to acknowledge or recognize that. And to top it off, there was a distinct sewage smell wafting through the premises all evening! The good news was that our server, Elizabeth did her best to make our experience pleasant. read more

I chose Summerhill on a recent trip to Kelowna where several of us had travelled from out of town for a family occasion. Unfortunately, we were left disappointed. The main complaint was that we waited forever between our opening cheese plate and the main courses. After probably 45 minutes the server came out to say that all our food will still a ways off -- we surmised that she'd forgotten put in the order until then. Maybe 30 minutes later we got our main courses, but at that point it was so long since the appetizer that I didn't feel much like eating anymore. (Others at my table were just super hungry, though.) The menu was short and different from what had been posted online. There were very few options for vegetarians, so one of us chose a Gado-gado starter for an entree. Instead of the authentic Indonesian dish, a spicy salad with potatoes, eggs, and vegetables, it was basically a bowl of cold vegetables with some blended tofu and peanut butter at the bottom. A few of us tried it and it was inedible. I think it should have been on the server to suggest a better option. My farmed fish was okay, but I made better halibut at home last night in about 20 minutes for about a quarter the price. Even the wine was disappointing. The organic Riesling we tried was as sweet as a dessert wine, which was unpleasant for a main course. Our server realized how badly things were going off the rails and made an effort to bring some food we could enjoy (much, much more quickly than the first round). But given the epic failure up to that point I would have expected the meal to be comped or to have gotten a more substantial apology. Instead we got a $400 bill. Many of the winery restaurants in Kelowna seem to be defaulting to bland attempts at "gourmet cuisine" in a way that is pretentious and not a lot of fun. But for the money, I expect competent service and some good food. read more

An absolute amazing place to come eat dinner or just enjoy a FEW glasses of wine with a cheese platter! They have many options and most are very healthy! We each enjoyed a few glasses of wine and ordered an amazing platter which included crackers, breads, cheese, meats, olives and pickled veggies, delicious! The view from the restaurant whether you're inside or on the patio is breathtaking. This was probably my favorite part. Watching the sunset over the water is unbelievable. Be sure to make reservations, this place goes get filled rather quickly. And for customer service, top notch! On my next visit to Kelowna i will be sure to visit! read more

Celebrating my parents' 25th wedding anniversary here was the best decision we could have ever made! Everyone was quite pleased with the food, the view was incredible, and the staff was out of this world--so friendly and accommodating! What we ordered: Cheese Plate - Oh man this was great. Wish there were hard cheeses in the mix though (4/5) Tuna and Oyster Ceviche - a must try! Indescribable flavour -- very fresh fish, tasty caviar, and an acidity that really cuts through the dish quite perfectly (4.5/5) Local Char - Deeeeelicious! Exceptionally seasoned, skin was crisp, and the fish itself was very fresh. This was my favourite dish of the night (4.5/5) Wagyu Duo - Buttery, tender, but it wasn't special enough to merit the 50 dollar price tag in my humble opinion (4/5) Flat Iron Steak - The salsa verde made this dish, but I wouldn't say it was anything to write home about (3.5/5) Crab Duo - Decent, although one half of the duo was fried, which masked the subtle flavours of the crab itself (3/5) To top it all off, they even gave us free bubbly to celebrate the big day! Sunset Organic Bistro is part of the Summerhill Pyramid Winery. The restaurant has nice views of the Okanagan Lake. After a long day of exploring Okanagan, my family and I finished the day with a nice meal at this restaurant. Although it took some time for the staff at the restaurant to figure out who would be our server. Finally one female server stepped up to the plate. She was friendly and could sense that we were pretty hungry so she had our dishes brought quite quickly. My dad and I ordered the vongole linguine - classic Italian pasta dish. The portions were pretty decent. The clams were tender and the linguine was cooked al-dente. Since it was so good, I could easily had a second helping of it. My mom and brother ordered the chicken breast with root vegetables, gnocchi and potatoes. The chicken was pretty tender and my brother ate every single piece of meat off that chicken. He commented that the gnocchi was pretty tender too. We ordered a bottle of chardonnay and the taste was good and pretty straight forward. It lacked complexity and a long finish. At such a reasonable price, we couldn't ask for more. Overall, we had a pretty good meal. If I ever visit Okanagan again, I would come back for another meal and enjoy the nice view while eating. read more

Stopped by here for a small bite to eat between wineries. Very unimpressed. We were 1 of 2 tables (winter season at around 2 pm), and our server was very slow. She did not understand basic things, we told her there would be four people in our party, one was in the washroom. She took us over to our table and set down 3 menus. We gently requested another menu for the other guest (we were very friendly and calm about it) and she was completely flustered and confused. That behaviour continued through the meal. The food was not terrible, but nothing I would come back for. However, we did order off the plant based menu, so I understand there is often mediocre flavours and strange textures when trying to recreate things like pizza and calamari. Definitely not my worst experience going out for food, but I will certainly not come here for food again. **Note: Summerhill Pyramid Winery has nothing to do with this review. We had a lovely wine tasting and I always enjoy going there, it is a great "larger" more commercial winery.** read more

The best thing this place has going for it isn't the food, it's the view. Flies were terrible on the patio. Service was mediocre. Decided last minute to have dinner here (because of online menu) and was pleasantly surprised. Great sunset view. Food was very good, I had the halibut. Halibut is more of a "steaky" fish, perhaps pacific cod (a more flaky fish) would have been perfect with the compliments on the plate, which were outstanding. I want to return to taste the elk medallions or felafel mignon. The restaurant only serves their wine, which was good. I've been told they may have a full liquor license in 2014 for those craving a cocktail. Be sure to arrive before the sunsets. read more

My wife and I chose to celebrate our Anniversary at Sunset Bistro in early October 2017. We sat on the patio and were quite comfortable with the patio heater and provided blankets. The evening view of the lake and the lights of Kelowna and West Kelowna was spectacular. Now to the meal.. I ordered a steak and my wife ordered a chicken pasta dish. Both dishes were fantastic as were the desserts. We ordered a bottle of Rose Sparkling wine but received the non rose version. As it too was quite delicious we decided to not even mention it. Before we had finished our first glass our server showed up with a bottle of Rose and an apology for bringing the regular Brut. We said it was fine but at his insistence, and after I asked if he would have to personally compensate for the extra bottle (he said he would not) we graciously accepted the extra complimentary bottle of Brut. We enjoyed both types and corked what was left of one bottle to take home. I compliment Ian for his exemplary service as well as Sunset who obviously empower their servers to ensure everything is just right for their patrons. I realize that this review is a little late but after reading some luke warm reviews I had to communicate our positive experience. read more

Heard great things about the view and was told to eat lunch here if I could, so when my winery tour ended up stopping here for a tour and lunch, I was thrilled. Sadly, they weren't serving from their regular menu at all and only had a buffet offering. At $29.95, the price was pretty steep for a buffet but I enjoyed the food and went up for seconds on a couple items. Sadly, they also ran out of oysters and a few other things in the buffet before I could even try them. Rating knocked down for the prices. Also, I hope they cut their price down for vegetarians. read more

Paid $40 for brunch and had to fight the numerous flies for the food at the buffet line. I am not talking one or two, like 40? 50? More? Crawling all over the food and some resting on the table. Understanding this is an organic bistro.. they had a fairly limited selection in regards to food choices. I was recommended a wine to pair with my meal which I was hesitant about and it did not pair well together. I did enjoy their charcuterie board and avocado toast and will hopefully be back to get a better taste of the rest of their wines. read more

Visited Summerhill for their Sunday Brunch and were a bit disappointed. Although it has quite an expansive selection of food the flavor was lacking anything distinctive. The shrimp was adequate but not spectacular, the oysters nice but not distinctive and quite a lot of broken shell in the shucking process, the smoked salmon, dry and tasteless. The cheese selection looked great but lacked some range; it would have been nice to have a few less pungent more local selections like some goat cheese or a basic cheddar to balance the blues and bries. The farfali pasta was pleasing but the eggs benedict overcooked and tasteless. The ham and meats, bacon and sausage were nice but the egg and hash dishes again flat for flavor. There was also a complete lack of bread or pastry products, which was surprising. The best part of the buffet was the deserts, some very nice chocolate work in the puffs and cakes. Actually the value isn't bad at $30 per adult for an expansive buffet if average quality food is acceptable but in a lovely setting. Although coffee and tea is included in the price a bottle of wine will set you back a minimum of $40 read more
