I'm a bit surprised by the low ratings that this Sunset Grill got in 2024. My experience was the complete opposite. On Saturdays, I run errands, but have kept them closer to home these days. A couple of Saturdays ago, I completed my errands at around 2 pm. I was ready for lunch. I find it a treat to have breakfast in a restaurant. I can have breakfast items any time of day. I was good having breakfast for lunch on this day, for instance. I did a search and found that this Sunset Grill in Pickering was open till 3:30 pm. By the time that I'd get there, I'd have roughly an hour to dine in. It was perfect! I was running errands near the Markham-Pickering border. It took maybe 25 minutes with the congestion on Steeles Avenue East that becomes Taunton Road to arrive here. This eatery is across from Shoppers Drug Mart and next to Pita Pit. Caution is needed when you are driving into this area to park. It's tight and there were two cars trying to move when I was there. I found a parking spot. I backed into it. I then walked through the nice courtyard area to get to the eatery. In the summertime, I can see how popular it would be to dine outside. The courtyard and patio are lovely. I walked in. A nice man, Kayano, who would ultimately be my server, greeted me immediately. I let him know that I'd like to dine in. He said that any table near the window would be good. I liked that I got a view and a ledge to put my purse down. I got a menu. I have my usual order at Sunset Grill. I love French toast and tend to order the French connection. It comes with your choice of eggs, two sausage links, and two slices of bacon. It's the perfect meal. I ordered scrambled eggs for my choice of eggs. I also got a Diet Coke. I like getting a can of Diet Coke here. It automatically comes with a glass with ice. It feels fancy pouring the contents of the can into the glass and having a chilled glass of Diet Coke. So refreshing! It took no time for my meal to arrive. I had maple syrup and ketchup on the table already, so I was ready to eat. This place makes excellent French toast. It was crispy and soft where they should be. I loved smearing butter and pouring maple syrup on each slice. Delicious! The scrambled eggs were perfect. They were yummy, as were the sausage links and bacon. I was a happy camper. I got the bill and paid at the counter. I used a credit card to pay and tip. Done! I used the washroom before I left. It's a single stall for each washroom and a note states this fact on each door for clarity. The one that I used was exceptional clean and pleasant. I finished eating at 3:15 pm. A couple came in and the staff here didn't frown. They were fine having them dine in with fifteen minutes left before this eatery closed. Such professionalism! I had a wonderful experience here. New Years brunch with the family. We ordered the 8oz striploin steak $22.99 with 3 eggs any style served with potatoes and light rye toast. The steak was cooked properly medium rare and the eggs were sunny side up as per order. The potato hash served was not appealing and looked old and dry. I would have preferred the potato latkes or pancake style or these potato cubes. The servers seemed a bit overwhelmed with the volume of diners. They did their best to bring out the orders quickly. The coffee is bottomless here, and they refilled regularly for us. The breakfast menu has great variety to satisfy your hunger. Give them a try. read more

The place wasn't busy and probably won't ever be with this type of service. I just walked out. Won't be back. The last time I was here was when they first opened. A comfort place for my family to dine. The restaurant is very welcoming, the staff are lovely, and the food is great! I would highly recommend this place to any families or couples wanting a filling breakfast or brunch. Their staff welcomed and seated us right as we walked through the door, even when the restaurant was busy. They served our drinks and food fast once we ordered it. The food was delicious, perfect egg yolk consistency, and tasted exactly how it tasted years ago. A definite plus, our server Sarah, was an absolute angel. She was very kind to my younger brother even when he struggled to pick a menu item, and very polite to all members of the family. Made jokes, refilled our drinks and coffees, and was overall the cherry on top that made our experience that much better. Sunset Grill is a breakfast and lunch place near home. They're only open from 7:00am until 3:00pm during the week and until 3:30pm on weekends. I wandered in there one morning to try their breakfast and it wasn't bad. After perusing their menu for a few minutes, I ordered a sandwich made with a fried egg, bacon, and cheese, on toast, and it came with home fries and some veggies. It was simple and tasty. Good. The place appeared to be clean and the staff were friendly. I guess that's a good sign first thing in the morning. They do have a patio for dining but it was raining on the day that I went. The worst place for breakfast. Highly do not recommend coming here. I recommend the Oshawa location as it is much better than Pickering. My mom and I came here for brunch and our waiter was Jeffery. We received terrible customer service and the food was absolutely disgusting and disappointing. We ordered our food and the waiter told me you can't choose turkey bacon and normal sausages has to be one or the other. I stated to him that I always get that whenever I come to sunset grill. He said "no I cannot ask the cooks because they will say no therefore it will let you down so I'm not going to ask". He basically told me that I cannot ask for you so just choose normal bacon and the sausages. We waited for our food and when it was brought out ... it looked not like the normal food that I usually get. The potatoes were undercooked and burned dark brown. The pancakes and French toast were not fully cooked and the eggs were cold. Mind you when the food was brought out the pancakes were and he said yea they are coming in 30 seconds. The waiter Jeffery never asked us once how our food is or if we even needed a refill on water. Very rude waiter. Furthermore, when we were eating he came to our table and asked do you still need the syrup? Of course we would we are still eating and the pancakes and French toast require syrup. He was in such a rush to clean and refill his syrups. Mind you he was not sanitizing anything or washing his hands. He went from cleaning to table to table. Overall, do not recommend Pickering sunset grill. Save your money and go to Perkins or a diff sunset grill location. This is a very good breakfast spot, which serves breakfast all day long. I ordered scrambled eggs and a black coffee. I really wanted an omelet, but the calorie count (posted on the menu) made me feel like the scrambled eggs would be the righteous choice. My meal was delivered quickly, soon after I ordered, and the home fries and dark rye toast (which I selected from their array of toast options) were a nice, flavorful counterpoint to the rather bland but satisfying scrambled eggs. The coffee was good, the service was efficient and pleasant, and after I paid at the cash I felt sufficiently invigorated to retrieve my vehicle from one of the shops at the nearby auto-mall. If you are having your car fixed at, for example Krown Rust in Pickering, spending your waiting time at the Sunset Grill is not bad.They even have newspapers by the front window, so that you can be entertained as you eat. I know that next time, I will order the omelet, as I saw the omelets that others were eating. This was our second visit to Sunset Grill, and we won't be back. The first time was meh, but it was a busy day, so we thought we would give it a second chance. The food is nothing special. Bacon is over salty, poor quality and over cooked. We asked if they could make a grilled cheese in a clean pan (not on the grill where they make the eggs) due to a severe egg allergy. As long as it was a clean pan, we'd be fine. The manager (via the waitress) REFUSED. They said they would only make it on the main grill where they make the eggs, they would not make it in a clean frying pan. We could *SEE* the row of clean frying pans sitting there, but they refused. Most places will be happy to make my son a grilled cheese in an egg free pan, we were surprised that they refused. It was not even a "We are sorry, we cannot guarantee it will be egg free." That would have been ok. But they said "No, it HAS to be made on the main grill with the eggs. We will not use a clean frying pan." We found that really rude. read more

It's a Saturday morning and we arrived at a busy location with a lot of action. Normally my girlfriend and I would avoid a breakfast chain but in this case we needed a place to kill time while changing tires. I have to say we were pleasantly surprised by many aspects of this place. We were greeted by a friendly server named (Debbie) who was very attentive and had a good sense of humour. The food was served quickly even with a busy crowd. Besides service, let's talk about the food. We ordered the peameal bacon and eggs breakfast and it was served flawlessly. So, me and the BF went to Sunset Grill this weekend. As my BF is a former server at restaurants he gets very ticked with poor customer service. We had an older waitress with blonde hair and who took our orders and seemed quite cold. Didn't have a very friendly demeanor at all. I ordered the Super Breakfast (2 pancakes, 3 scrambled eggs, homefries and bacon) with a coffee. My BF ordered something similar but he had no pancakes, sausage instead of bacon and toast instead with a hot chocolate. Our food came out in a timely manner which was great but we were given no utensils. As we kept a watchful eye for our server we were hoping that's where she ran off to but instead she got distracted doing something else. I even tried to look for cutlery to swipe so I can start eating but there wasn't any put on the tables. It's clearly given when the food is delivered. My BF was getting agitated b/c no one likes to eat cold scrambled eggs so I decided to get up and just ask a random waitress for cutlery to which she replied "Oh! You weren't given utensils for your meal?" and then came by and dropped some off for us. I saw her mention it to our waitress and shortly after that the waitress who had no emotion poured me a fresh cup of coffee and asked how our meal was. She seemed pleasant then. I am shocked the reviews for this place is so low! I absolutely love coming here whenever I'm visiting the old hood. I pretty much get the same thing every time, which is simple, but consistent. I will get their 3 pancakes plus a side of sausage, and a chocolate milk to wash it down. Their pancakes taste like a delicious cake, and their sausage is perfectly cooked. I have never had to wait for a table here, but it does get busy. I find their service very prompt, and for those who drink coffee, they are always asking if you need a top up. Before I discovered a gem family run diner on Westney, Sunset Grill used to be my families go to breakfast spot, however, after visiting there about two weeks ago on a Sunday morning I don't think I'll ever go back. So here's what went down: It's usually busy for a Sunday but we were seated fairly quickly. About five minutes into waiting, or so. Our server, however, was very unimpressed and had an overall bad attitude. Now the reason we came here was because our usual spot was extremely packed, and this was our fallback, so after a quick glimpse of the menu we knew what we wanted. When our waiter came to take our drinks, my mother asked if we could place our orders at the same time to speed up the waiting. He said, "no, I can only do drinks." What?? First red flag. Didn't see the issue in him taking our orders. Next, I noticed a long hair entangled in my set of cutlery, so I kindly requested we get a new pair. There were no apologies made, or not even an effort to adjust the bill somehow. By this point there were two red flags and everyone was just hungry and tired. He took our orders, I ordered 3 scrambled eggs with turkey bacon on the side, and my brother ordered a chicken burger. My mom ordered French toast. This was the only meal out of the 3 to come out OK. By the time our food came, we had finished our drinks and felt a little bitter about that. Oddly enough, my eggs were COLD. And we were sitting right across the open kitchen? Weird. My "three" eggs looked like 1.5 eggs. My toast was BURNT, along with my turkey bacon, to the point where it almost cracked like a chip when I bit into it. My poor brothers burger basically fell apart in his hands as he picked it up. The bun was hard and almost stale looking, and immediately crumbled after the first bite. First time. First impressions were excellent; hostess, server, food, service, price - all good. The iPod ordering system was pretty cool - first I've seen in a restaurant. Debbie was our server and she was awesome! She was open to questions about the ordering system and offered me to place my own order with it. I'd go back, the food was very good including decent coffee. The OJ was a little pricey at $2.50 for a small glass but it was fresh squeezed and very good. I'm a local resident here Pickering,Ontario. Nice breakfast theme here colourful lights news playing in the background wood decor etc. Started the day off with avocado toast and coffee. Coffee cups are small but makes up with the dark roast ordered the corned beef hash with yogourt parfait. Food was well made, yogurt was sour but the honey and granola gave it a perfect taste. I like my sandwiches with over easy egg and this supposed chef refused to do it, this is how I always order my sandwiches he refused so I paid for our drinks and left.... This is a decent place for breakfast and lunch with no surprises. I usually get the BLT which is pretty good, although it could use a bit more bacon, but what couldn't? :-) My husband usually gets the Eggs Sunset which is their version of Eggs Benedict. Both come with home fries and veggies and dip (which is a cucumber stick, a carrot stick, and a packet of ranch dressing). I tried the pancakes once and they were pretty good, but I was disappointed they don't do waffles which I prefer. they don't offer much that isn't breakfast food, even in the sandwiches, but you wouldn't go to a breakfast place expecting something else. I tried to go to the sunset grill closer to home at Kingston and morningside but their food just didn't compare, it actually kind of sucked. Most of the times I go, foods fine, and service is great GREAT, I usually am served by this tall cute girl with short hair, very sociable and knowledgeably. It's hard to mess up breakfast but it's easy to mess up service. Honest review, take it how you want. My wife and I really prefer mom and pop places and really don't like to go with chains like Sunset grill or Eggsmart, etc..We decided to give it a try since it was in our area. My wife ordered Steak & Eggs over hard and I had their version of Eggs Benedict. My meal was fine. Not great but good. However the potatoes were not cooked so I didn't eat any. My wife's steak was hard and overcooked and the egg was basically a fried egg. We asked the waitress and she told us that this is their version on eggs over hard and what my wife wanted was "eggs of medium", and she walked away. No apologies, no, "I can make you another one". My wife cut the steak took a bite and it was hard. She gave me a piece just to confirm and the steak was overcooked. Admittedly my wife was angry and she asked the waitress again, this is not what she asked for. The waitress asked us if she could provide another steak, she refused since so much time had passed. We asked to have the steak removed from the bill and was told that we ate too much of it. Meaning two bites of the once piece that was cut. At the end no apologies was made for anything. Others may of had a good meal here, just be aware at anytime you could be subjected to less then stellar service. We'll stick to the Mom and Pops places. If there was a way to give zero stars i would. The waitresses use a phone instead of a pad and paper to take the order. It took a while to realize that and because of that it seemed as if she was texting or scrolling facebook while she was taking my order. She stared at the phone the whole time and it was very impersonal, even once i realized that was how she was punching in the order. The homefries were a mixture of burnt and undercooked. It seemed like the cook had potatoes left over from the previous order and rushed out the fresh ones once he noticed they were burning. The bacon was burnt and extremely salty. I went to this place around noon on a Saturday initially looking for a hot cup of coffee and a quick bite to eat. When I got there it was jam packed with a waiting line 6 deep so it took a while for the tables to turn over before I got seated and into my 1st cup of coffee and ordered the Big breakfast. By the 3rd cup however still no food and the waitress actually came by and asked me if I wanted my bill??? I laughed and told her I hadn't even actually received my food yet to which she was quite flustered and profusely apologetic. The food came quickly after that with an extra piece of bacon lol The food in general was pretty good. Your standard fare of 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes and pancakes. Can't really go wrong. Now I know a lot of people would have deducted points for the delivery of food mistake but I am old school. I was raised in an era where people make honest mistakes all the time. No harm. No foul. But I'm appalled and embarrassed about all these self entitled condescending a-holes that have zero ounce of humanity for food servers in an obviously busy environment. I left a $5 tip on the table and went to pay for my meal at the cashier where low and behold a woman was arguing with the cashier about her service and demanding some kind of compensation. The New Sunset on Fairway has got to be the worst we have ever eaten at. the coffee was a luke warm , took way to long to get our food and when it did arrive we had to get up and get our own silverware. My husband and I went to The Sunset Grill for breakfast, we were seated immediately. The waitress dropped off the menu and then we had no idea where she went.. Another table was seated after us, were given menus and the waitress came by to take their order, we had to call the waitress to take our order, she stated that she thought she had done so... When our meal came, we ordered the same thing the eggs benedict... my husband had two eggs on his plate I had three, ( REALLY!! ) the home fried potatoes were not cooked through, slightly raw and had no grill marks. We called the waitress over and she offered us some tomatoes, we did not want tomatoes.. someone came over and asked if we would like them done over again. When they arrived they looked the same, were still raw with no grill marks... again, she offered us tomatoes.
