Perfect Fish and Chips! I'd not been to Halibut House in several years, but the family had a craving for Fish and Chips, so we went for Halibut House take-out. Halibut House is much more than just classic fish and chips. With a robust and diverse seafood menu, Halibut House offers shrimp, deep fried clams, choices of cod, haddock or halibut, and more. My husband and daughter both ordered halibut and fries, and I had halibut and onion rings. The fish was hot and crispy when I got it home, and it's crunchy coating didn't suffer in travel time. The onion rings were great: crispy and savory. The fries were the typical, thicker cut of fries that seem be an inevitable accompaniment to fish and chips; nostalgic, hearty comfort food which somehow is perfect with a Fish 'n' Chips dinner. The order came with loads of packets of tartar sauce, vinegar (both white and malt) and ketchup. The fish itself was substantial: thick, super-fresh and pleasantly flaky, yet not dried out. The coating was a shatteringly crispy masterpiece, and better executed than many fish and chip restaurants. Delicious, and just what we wanted from a fish and chips dinner! Halibut is so difficult to buy in the Toronto area, that it was a rare treat. As tempting as their diverse seafood menu is, I'll probably just keep ordering the halibut. Halibut House Fish & Chips shop gets my vote for fast casual dining and takeout. It's one of those well laid out modern restaurants with lots of room for the whole family, good lighting, and nostalgic comfort food at affordable prices. The cod fish was a decent size portion. It came with a heap of coleslaw and freshly cut fries which were served steaming hot out of the kitchen. Talk about freshness! Tip: The halibut is exceptionally tasty. I like visiting this part of Pickering. There are a ton of businesses to explore. I visited Food Basics, Home Depot, and this Halibut House Fish and Chips for the first time in one visit. After shopping at the first two businesses, I was ready for a late lunch. I looked at this eatery, and felt that fish and chips were perfect. I drove over to this eatery. I backed into a spot and walked in. I got Sophia welcoming me, who ultimately was my server. She asked if I was here to pick up an order. Nope, I wanted to dine in. She said that I could sit anywhere. I chose a booth with a window view. It was comfortable. I got a menu. I looked at it. Halibut is my favourite fish. I normally do onion rings as the side. I saw sweet potato fries and went it them. My order: - Diet Pepsi (3) - Halibut and sweet potato fries Sadly, this place doesn't have fountain drinks. I was thirsty, which accounted for the first can of Diet Pepsi. My meal was generous in size, which required two more cans to wash everything down. I like that this place has both Coke and Pepsi products. It was also great to get a cup with ice in it. I liked the squeeze bottles containing ketchup and tartar sauce. They were easy to use without shaking a classic ketchup bottle to try and get the ketchup to flow. No mess. Great! I should invest in squeeze bottles at home. I loved my meal. The halibut was crispy and flaky. Delicious! It was my first time having sweet potato fries at any Halibut Fish and Chips eatery. They were excellent. I'd get them again. Coleslaw was a part of my meal. I loved it so much. It was fresh and had the perfect crunch. I polished it off first. I liked dining here. It's much nicer than the one in Markham. This location is definitely newer. I paid with a credit card. I tipped and tapped. Done! I used the washroom before I left. It was clean. No issues. To be fair, the majority of these stars belong to our server, Sophia. She was absolutely amazing. We were greeted immediately upon entering and she was attentive the entire time we were there. I do like that the menu provides caloric details... or maybe I don't! :) They offer every combination of cod, haddock and halibut with sides. They also offer hake, which I've never heard or before. They have quite a wide variety of other items on their menu so I reckon there's something for everyone. You can have your fish deep-fried but they have grilled options available as well. I also noticed that they have a full breakfast menu which includes an eggs benny! I'll have to come back to check that out. The restaurant is open, bright and clean. You can dine in or grab a takeaway. I think the prices are fair based on the various fish options. You're always going to pay more for halibut (which I prefer) but the haddock, cod and hake are considerably less expensive. Overall, the meal was okay but as mentioned above, the stars go to Sophia. It's been a long time since I've been to Halibut House in Pickering, even though it's in my neighbourhood. On this visit, I had their Haddock Fish & Chips for only 12.99, as advertised on a poster in their front window. It was a good sized piece of fish with a generous amount of chips and coleslaw. This was a really good meal with good flavour. This place gets bonus marks for providing full bottles of ketchup and tartar sauce instead of the little packets! Not only does Halibut House do amazing F&C, they put on a pretty decent breakfast. I had 3 mammoth chocolate chip pancakes (came with home fries), while my guests had the omelet and other breakfast type stuff. The pancakes were fluffy and light, not to mention HUGE. The home fries were ok...but you could taste that they were cooked in the same oil as the fish (which didn't bother me, but I'm weird). The price was $12.95 for one and we got the second free I was surprised at how large the fish piece were. It was a filling meal. The fries were large cut, the coleslaw had the right amount of vinaigrette and was not overloaded with mayo. The fish tasted great. It had just the right amount of batter and not too greasy. I was crazy hungry and wanted a pretty big breakfast so I ended up making a quick stop here since I was in the area. Went straight to the take-out counter and was assisted right away by one of their staff who was incredibly friendly. She took my order and advised me that it would be just about 5 minutes and she really wasn't kidding! I think it actually took me longer to decide what I wanted. Originally, I was thinking of getting their really cheap breakfast special but I ended up getting one of their bigger platters with French Toast. I'm picky with my French Toast but theirs wasn't too bad. Nothing extraordinary, but it was good. Platter also came with 2 strips of bacon, 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of peameal bacon, 2 sausages and home fries. The meal cost about $13++ and was totally worth the price as I had 2 meals out of it. And to think, I was thinking of going to McD's for breakfast. Glad I opted this instead. If only they would include a cup of coffee to go with the meal or at least some eggs, that would've been great. We decided to have Halibut House on Easter Saturday. Boy were we amazed at the fish and chips we got! First off we visited a Fish and Chips place on Brock Rd. that opened up on Good Friday and were so disappointed with what we got. Not only that but they charging 2.75 for every can of pop... (That's outrageous!) We were so discouraged but decided to give a shot to Halibut House anyway. First off, Gerry the manager of the location was absolutely amazing. He was very approachable and kind. My wife and I found ourselves having nostalgic/insightful discussions about a wide range of topics with Gerry. The prices for the food were well priced and the staff besides Gerry were very friendly. Since then we have visited 3 more times. Every single time we visited it's been the same amazing service, great food and great conversations. The fish is nicely battered and well cooked. The chips are very crispy as well. The best part for me is that the food isn't extremely oily like at other locations in Pickering. The fish & chips whether it's halibut haddock or cod are generally very good, however our last visit on Sept 16th was disappointing. Don't know what fish they were serving but we ordered cod, I can tell you it wasn't cod, even my husband noticed, more like a monk fish variety. Either their supplier is at fault or they are, they should be able to tell the difference even before it's cooked. We've never had a problem with the Whitby location, always get what you order and it's always very good. Don't like coming here for breakfast as the potatoes have that fishy taste from being done in the same oil. They should leave breakfast alone. read more

Halibut House is great. I am not sure why the reviews aren't higher, but the owner/manager of this franchise (Gary) is extremely personable as is the female that also works there. I haven't spoken to anyone else. The establishment is new, and clean and the service is quick. The Fish and Chips are great. The batter is light and airy, and the chips are pretty good. I'm guessing the incident of not double frying was limited to one day. I've been there at least 3 times and the fries have been on point. Overall a good place to eat. read more
