Have been here several times now for dinner. You will not find a better steak in town. If you get a chance make it to the Prime rib night it's amazing. What a disappointment for their Lobster special surf and Turf night! Lobsters were so small I could have gone to Red Lobster for a bigger Lobster for half the price! My filet mignon was dry and I ordered it Medium. Waitress never brought us bread. I won't fall for this scam again! They even over charged me for the Surf and Turf. Menu said $47 but charged me $49. Sunset Grill is a country club restaurant by the Sonoma Ranch Golf course. It's small yet intimate. Also great for family and weddings. The Ribye steak was so large, it would have to be saved the next day. It's a bit pricey, but one would come here for the location and the beautiful view of the Sonoma Ranch hills. read more

I've eaten food off the floor they tasted better. Lol My goodness. Saturday afternoon lunch time and after playing 18 holes you work up an appetite. I have been to many golf course grills and I have to say this one was by far my worst disappointment. The decor is dark, boring, and the carpet makes you nauseous due to the patterns. Get some lights, better decor and smiles. Perhaps some bright paint. Going in with a party of 4 one person with a rolling walker. Attempted to be seated and was ignored for 10 minutes until asking if I should just seat myself ( mind you the sign at door says "please wait to be seated" seriously). After finally sitting the menu girl showed up dropped menus and asked for drink order. Ordering drinks and food. Ordered a angus burger with sweet potato fries(other options were beer battered fries, coleslaw, or sweet potato fries). Can't say I was thrilled. Burger was not hot or fresh and was clearly over cooked. Burger came on a big roll as opposed to hamburger bun which was not toasted or offered to toast. Clearly a sad meat to bun to cheese ratio. The food is terrible. The staff don't care if you like it or not. They spend their time standing around gossiping. While I was there another table of older people were celebrating a birthday. They ordered iced tea and it arrived with no ice. The lady asked for ice and the waiter told her it had ice. !!! Seriously. You couldn't see ice at all. Just shut up and give her iced tea. How rude can you be. Do you not want a tip or job !?????? The view out the window is great but it not worth the service. I suggest you golf and go to Burger King. read more

Golf Course non-official digest best restaurant of the southern New Mexico region. Ambiance is great, food is impeccable and atmosphere is bar none. I had the surf and turf with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. Service was to par, no pun intended. All guests that accompanied our group were delightfully satisfied. The mashed potatoes were the only down side, dried and hardly any flavor. I was hoping for a garlic flavor, but it was not the main event. The meat was extremely tender and lobster was delectable. All other items were to die for. Highly, highly recommend this establishment for a formal night and fantastic meal. read more

Wow this was seriously a horrible experience. I walked into the bathroom and one of servers was walking out and caught off guard, she dropped her purse and a crack pipe fell out of her bag and broke on the floor. I at first went to help her gather her things, she was obviously shaken up about it. When I saw what it was, she scooped everything up and rushed out the door. I was appalled!! On my way out the door, after paying my bill, I saw that girl again with a group of other works all hiding in the back chatting. Can I really be the first person to review Sunset Grill? That doesn't seem possible as the place has been around for a long time. Anyway, Sunset Grill is the restaurant located in the clubhouse of the Sonoma Ranch golf course. It features both a bar and a somewhat fancy sit-down restaurant that is an excellent choice for a special occasion lunch or dinner, entertaining a client or a job candidate, etc. I have eaten there several times (more than 5 but probably fewer than 10) and never had a bad meal. Sunset Grill tends to be fairly expensive, with entrees in the $20-30 range, but unlike some other establishments in town, the price is usually worth it. Waiters are efficient and skilled. The kitchen sometimes takes too long to produce the food, which has been frustrating on some occasions, but during my most recent visit the timing had greatly improved. There is seating both in the restaurant, which is a little dark, and then out on the completely enclosed patio, which gives a great view of the golf course. If you sit on the patio look up under the eaves and you will see a lot of mud-swallow nests (they are outside; the birds can't poop in your food). Some of the highlights: their onion soup, which is heavy on the mushrooms, is excellent, as are their fresh-baked breads. I've had a wonderful Cobb Salad there. Despite the fact that Las Cruces is landlocked, this is a good place to get fish; recently, lobster tail, sea bass, and halibut were all nicely cooked and served with interesting sauces (grapefruit sauce for one, srinacha for another). They make a mean risotto and very edible mashed potatoes. And on the dessert side, I've had wonderful cheesecake, and berry mascarpone. read more

I really am having a tough time pinning Sunset Grill at 3 or 4 stars; on one hand, their food is far above average for Las Cruces standards (for a price, obviously). However, on the other hand, their service can be downright pathetic. While we had a very pleasant meal tonight (Ian R was our waiter and was fantastic), it was in the minority of experiences so far. Our meals here have been very inconsistent and it's always tough to gauge how our newest experience will play out. Tip: Guys, if you're looking for a nice location to take your lady out for a romantic date, Sunset Grill is definitely a nice option (and one of the only ones in Las Cruces). Keeping it short, some of our favorite items include: --Scallops appetizer: So delicious! With bacon bits, caramelized onions, and basking in a light, vodka cream sauce, these are very tasty. Definitely give these a shot. --Grilled Ahi Tuna: Love the sesame seed crusting on the top and bottom. House preparation is medium rare and I also recommend this. This is served with two sides (like the other entree options) and I usually opt for the cheesy risotto. --NY Strip: One of the better pieces of meat in LC. It has been pretty good the past few times we've been in to eat. On a final note... There is one waiter that I just absolutely dread; when he struts over to our table and takes our drink order, I almost want to just get up and leave. Pretentious, slow, and easily put-off, he is just flat-out annoying; I really would love to smack him with the handy light-up menus when he throws a fit for us not ordering 17 bottles of wine, or not taking the bait for the $34 Seafood Sampler. NO, we JUST want the scallops. Get over yourself. Bottom line: Typically tasty food (4 stars) but sketchy service (2 stars, even though tonight was 4 stars). Good luck. read more

This place is awesome! Overlooks the golf course and it has a beautiful outside patio. It has a relaxing atmosphere and is mostly inhabited by rich golf men and trophy wife-has beens. I haven had the food, but my friends say the burrito was decent. I love the drink specials!! $3.50 mimosas and $2 pints on Saturdays and Sundays until 3pm. We ordered a bottle off the full page list of cabernet, some of which were $250. They were, unfortunately, out of the wine; after several minutes of searching. After about 10 minutes the waitress came back and read us a list of 5 cabs they had in stock. Out of an entire page they had 5! available. We selected one of the 5 and the waitress brought to our table. It took no less than 5 minutes for her to (kind of) open the bottle. 3 of which was spent fumbling with the knife and completely butchering the foil around the cork. The other 2 was spent attempting to remove and eventually breaking the cork in half. She was completely dumbfounded about removing the balance of the cork from the bottle. By this time we took over and opened the bottle for her. If you are going to sell $250 bottles of wine, train your staff on how to use a corkscrew, and actually have wine in stock. On the brighter side, the food is really good and well presented. Unfortunately, it is over salted, but this is VERY normal for Las Cruces. This is why I never give higher than a 4 in Cruces. I completely understand why there were only 3 tables the entire night. I won't be going back. read more

Since we live in the Sonoma Ranch area, we planned to try out the Sunset Grill sometime. In our last homeowners newsletter, we discovered a coupon for 25% off our bill to dine in their restaurant. Yes, the menu has a pricey look to it, but if the quality of the food is real good, then the price becomes less important. My wife had the scallops and I had the Chilean sea bass. Both the entrees and the accompanying sides were delicious. Service was just fine. I am sure that we will return again to sample other items on the menu. read more

I've been attending a breakfast at Sonoma Grill for years. This morning, with the new menu, I ordered the Veggie Platter. I told the server twice in the ordering process I was a vegetarian. Imagine my surprise when I found the flavor enhancer added to the potatoes came from diced bacon. I am now suffering the discomfort, pain and embarrassment of a decades-long vegetarian eating a meal cooked with bacon. The service and setting were both good. This is one of the nicer restaurants in Las Cruces. My wife and I have never had a bad meal here. The quality of the ingredients are always very high every time we have come here for dinner. We like the steaks here better than the Double Eagle and the seafood specials on Fridays are always very fresh. The appetizers and regular entrees are all delicious. The desserts are all tasty. Great cocktails and wine selection. The manager Simon is also amazing. He helped us setup a birthday party for our son and he constantly demonstrated some of the best customer service we have ever experienced. While the cost may be higher than the average Las Cruces restaurant or fast food joint, you definitely taste the quality in the variety of dishes. read more

I've had anything from simple breakfast skillets to high end prime rib dinners. I always come away impressed. Our second visit about a month later from our last visit we were seated in the solarium which has a nice view into Las Cruces below. This visit we tried two different cocktails, Baltimore Bang and Cape Codder. Cocktails may be one of the best things at this restaurant. The special again was a blackened fish, this time swordfish. The spice rub tasted spicy rather than salty as per our previous visit. The sides were brocollini and roasted potatoes. Our other entree was filet mignon with basmati rice and asparagus. Both entrees were fine, but all sides were equally fine. We shared a 5-layered chocolate cake which was very good. We had a busy evening tonight but heard they were having fresh Halibut at the grill. So we called them and asked if they could make us two dinners to go. It was AMAZING! The Halibut was perfect, grilled with rosemary butter. It came with asparagus and roasted red potatoes and a side salad to start. My mother and I just had a great late lunch here, so after reading some reviews im a little skeptical of the reviewers. We shared a small plate of Habanero mango bone-in hot wings which mom described as finger licking good (she never says that!). They we're a perfect combo of sweet and spicy, and fried extra crispy just the way that I like them. She had a patron margarita and I had a strawberry margarita, they were a little too heavy on the syrupy sweet side and light on the tequila. Ive had better but they certainly quenched a craving! Mom had a Ruben, stacked high with meat and sauerkraut and the most beautiful golden french fries either of us have ever had. I had the whole grain waffle and battered chicken tenders. it was no Roscoes House Of Chicken And Waffles, but with a little Franks hot sauce and some sour cream, it was pretty darn close to a memory of LBC! Thanks Sunset Grill for offering this combination in the first place! Thanks to a check in on yelp we got a free dessert, so we chose the Turtle cheesecake made in house. I've never been a huge fan of cheesecakes but this one was executed nicely, a sugary Graham cracker crust and not to heavy on the topping or the garnish syrups. After all this there was certainly some to take home for a midnight snack. One more thing: our server did an excellent job, he was polite, knew his menu, & didn't pester us. At dinner time it is true Fine Dining. They have an amazing wine selection at a fair price. The sports lounge part of the restaurant is great - you can watch a variety of games and have a good drink in a nice environment without actually having to go to a Bar if you don't want to! I went here for breakfast on a Friday morning at 8. I was one of 4 people in the large restaurant. I got a table with a view overlooking the golf course. It was very pretty. The food was basic breakfast fair prepared well. The view is what makes this place a little bit nicer than other breakfast spots. read more

This is our local restaurant in the Sonoma Ranch area. Been coming here for more than 11 years. I know most of the management staff, and will admit to some turnover in server staff, but find that common in Las Cruces. We've had breakfast, lunch and dinner here over the years. I am rarely disappointed. The Chilean Sea Bass is my personal favorite, while my husband loves the steaks. Specials are frequently enticing. Of late, there is a new owner, and the atmosphere in the club is changing, mainly because there have been no updates to tables, chairs and carpet. One day there may be no one in there and he next, it's full. Hoping new owner is proactive. Food is great, high quality meats and seafoods. Went for lunch and got the grilled chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich tasted ok, but the chicken was dry. The fries were very good, crispy on the outside and creamy within. The 2 stars is for the service. We got there on the late side of lunch and instead of service getting better as the tables cleared it got worse.
