I would give them a zero, but unfortunately that is not an option. I have been a customer of this salon for probably over a year now and have had nothing but problems over and over again but my recent experience really takes the cake. I paid for their $50 rip off package around the beginning of the year but tried to cancel because I wasn't using it nearly enough to make it worth it. My mistake? Trying to cancel ONE DAY after the billing cycle. That's right. If you want to cancel you have to do it in person (that's assuming you have enough patience to wait for the line up in front of you to finish - usually only 1 staff on hand who is inexperienced), but you also have to cancel on the 1st of the month. They refused to allow me to cancel over the phone or by e-mail because and I quote :
"Cancellation by phone is something that would prevent us from being able to offer these deeply discounted rates. There is absolutely no way we'd be able to handle the 'I called to cancel' claims by clients that have fallen behind or ignored their membership payments." - This is from Kelly K - the president of the company.
So basically my understanding from that is that they are able to offer such "deeply discounted rates (arguable at best)" because the suckers like me, get stuck paying for something they don't use.
Anyway, they ended up agreeing to downgrade my package via e-mail. Matthew - the company's operation's manager, informed me (via e-mail), that the bronze package includes 1 free tan in any bed per month and at only $9.98/mth. So I agreed and the package was changed. I then put this out of my mind and showed up to the salon to use my free tan. I used a level 5 and all was fine. The next time I came in about a month later, the lady who was obviously new, told me that my particular package only included the lowest level bed. Well at this point I had already waited about 10 minutes just to get to the desk and there was still a line-up behind me as usual, so I just paid for an upgrade ($14). ridiculous! Went to the bed only to find out after I had changed, that she forgot to set the timer. So I got changed again, went back to the desk to get her to change it. Then I realized that there was no towel. So I got changed AGAIN and went to the desk to grab a towel. At this point I just wanted to get out of there but I already paid $14 for the upgrade to a level 3 or 4 whatever so I used it. There was a bulb out and the fan wasn't working. The mister didn't work either. Actually none of their beds that claim to have misters, actually worked. That was my last tan.
I kept meaning to go in and cancel - actually I had intended on cancelling the last time I was there but the ladies behind me had already been waiting for a while and you don't want to mess with tanners! They will cut you!
So here I am about a month or so later, randomly checking my credit card statement and noticed that they had been charging me more than double what they (the president and the ops manager) confirmed to me. I quickly e-mailed the company, and they replied back that they made no mistakes and could do nothing. I then forwarded my e-mail that had confirmed the $9.98 rate and no response. not a phone call, nothing! Followed up 3 more times and still no response almost 2 weeks later. Great customer service!
I've finally given up and have forwarded to my credit card company to dispute the charges. Would have preferred to have them sort it out, but I guess kelly k doesn't want to admit fault. Whatever!
Aside from the lack of service here are my top 5 reasons to not use their salon (at least in yaletown).
1) Generally the staff are slow and untrained to get through lines. Almost every time I've gone, I've had to wait 5-10 minutes to approach the desk. Always lines in Yaletown.
2) headphone jacks and misters don't work on any of the beds (including level 4 and 5), I've tried all.
3) If you sign up for a plan, they make you cancel on the 1st of the month in person only. If your card declines (regardless of the reason), they charge you $25 and don't even tell you about it! (what's the charge for? extra work? I don't think so).
4) Prices are not competitive although they swear they are the cheapest. If you buy points and you end up with not enough for a tan, they don't let you pay the difference, they make you purchase another points package!
5) The president of the company can't even admit she screwed up and doesn't care.
Will I return? No.
Hopefully this will prevent other other people from falling into their trap. read more
