While we were waiting for our kids to finish their ride, we casually walked around the property near the river and that's where we were confronted by a staff member asking us what we were doing. After I indicated that we were just waiting for our kids to return from their trail ride we were told we were on a private road and needed to wait in the parking lot... I'm glad my kids enjoyed their ride, but as a paying customer this left a bad taste in my mouth. Staff could have decided to be respectful towards my wife and I. Unfortunate. My daughters (8 and 11) and I enjoyed a short trail ride during our stay in Sunriver. Two of us had never rides before (I was the most nervous - go figure, lol!). We had a fabulous time. My daughters were in awe of the mostly young, female staff and their competent and confident handling of the horses. The ride went through a lovely wooded area and then had some riverside views at the end. The staff took pictures of us along the way which they texted to us at the end of the ride. The horse went out of the gate on the main road with my 7 year old son! It was horrible!!! Their horses know the basics and don't listen whatsoever. They gave my son no instruction before we went out on the trail ride. The leader turned at an open gate. My son's horse did not follow, instead went out the gate down the main road. My son was screaming. The leader's horse bucked her. She and the saddle came off so she could not go get my son. Luckily, we own horses so I had the expertise to jump off and go get my son and his horse. My horse was a disaster as well! Thankfully, my son's horse didn't buck or runoff. read more

We love sunriver and all it has to offer however this place is wildly overpriced and does not deliver. We tried the pony rides a few years ago and it felt short but we chalked it up to a fluke. We went back today and I took some photos - the ride seemed quite short again but when I looked back at my photos (the time stamp) the 7 min pony ride was 2 mins. Literally 2 mins. So beware it is $15 for 2 minutes of a pony ride - and they want tips. I'm sure the longer rides are more worth it but don't waste your time or money on the pony rides for kids. read more

Only reviewing for the pony ride for 2-6 year olds. We paid $30 total ($15/rider) for each kid to be walked around a short winding circle twice at a super slow speed. This might be more fun for a 2 or 3 year old but my 5 & 6.5 year olds were not too impressed. I'm guessing we were there for 10-15 minutes. The pony was a little spooked by two other horses coming back to the stables and she had to stop the ride until they were put away. Not a huge deal but seemed odd. So wouldn't recommend for fearless and adventurous kids but maybe for a first encounter with a pony. I would love to come back for private lessons in the arena and some trail riding. read more

However, I wanted to acknowledge the staff for their incredible patience and empathy in how they handled the situation. In particular, Julie was amazing. Paid 15 for our 6 year old to ride around a dusty track twice. The whole experience took about 6 minutes. Not a great value but my daughter enjoyed it. The people who work at the stables are not out to make friends- both I encountered were short and not talkative. Overpriced and less than satisfactory experience. The horses were unruly and did not want to be ridden. My horse took off about ten minutes into the ride and galloped back to to the stables. I could not get her to stop and the owners and other stable hands had to run in front of the horse to slow her down. I was utterly terrified and they asked me why I couldn't pull on the reins more to stop the horse. I was an inexperienced rider and was doing everything I could to not fall off. We were immediately placed on other horses for the remainder of the hour and I was made to feel as if it were my fault that the horse took off. I understand that horses can be spooked, but I dislike the way the whole thing was handled. Additionally, my sister and I have about fifty bug bites on each leg, incredibly swollen, and we both had long pants on. Nothing was said by anyone about how bad the mosquitos were on the trail or the fact that they could bite through pants. With the extensive bug bites, I definitely think that a warning should have been in order, ESPECIALLY with the Zika virus!!! I look like I have a skin disease and it is so swollen and itchy. The trail itself is nothing special. Incredibly dusty and one view of the Deschutes River. We saw a few deer which was pretty cool. Our guide was very friendly and sweet at least after the fact of the horse taking off. read more

I would like to start by saying I have never posted a review, but this justifies doing so. If you like being publicly fat shamed, then this is the place for you. While a weight limit for riding is listed on the site when you book the reservation (because they can't accommodate what is a large amount of people these days), they neglect to inform you that if they don't believe you they will pull you aside in front of a group of strangers and ask that you get on a scale. It is very expensive to pay for this unbearably embarrassing experience, and of course they worm out of a refund by essentially ignoring you. One of the worst experiences we have ever had on what was supposed to be a fun vacation. read more

It's a 10-15min pony ride for the little ones, up to age 6. It's what we expected. Our daughter was very happy and got to give the pony a big hug afterwards. They have $5 stuffed horses inside and ice cream bars for sale. A cute stop for little ones.You can bike all the way here and back from anywhere within sun river on the bike paths. read more

NOT SAFE!!! I went on a 30 minute ride with my 5 cousins and sister. My 11 year old cousin fell off his horse because his reins got caught in the horse's legs, so the horse got flustered, sped up, and kneeled down. Obviously not the horse's fault, but it was obvious that the horse was having trouble throughout the whole ride, shaking his head constantly and acting upset. The trainers did nothing to figure out what was actually happening and only demeaned my cousin for not holding his reins correctly (even though they gave us an approx. 30 second lesson on how to guide our horse and my cousin had zero experience riding a horse). To top this all off, they did not even bother to alert his mother of what happened. Makes sense why we signed all of the waivers, so we can't sue them for being terrible trainers with little to no regard for safety. Inconsiderate, unprofessional, and not worth your time. read more

Nice staff, beautiful view, gentle horses. This is great to experience with your kids if they are at least 7 years old. The horses know the trail and follow it with out you really having to guide them anywhere. So if you are an experienced rider and want to ride a horse your way then this isn't the place for you. The horses are clearly well taken care of. Every horse has a name. My daughter loved the horse she was on. It's name was Christmas. Our guide Soraya had a smile on her face from the moment we met her to the moment we said goodbye. Soraya's positive attitude really added to our experience. Not sure what the bad reviews are about. Everyone we came into contact with was super friendly and helpful. Reservation and check-in process was easy. We went first thing in the morning for a 1 hour trail ride and this was a good plan. Anything later would have been really hot and even dustier. The guides (Josie and Rey) were great and pointed out things to see and gave advice on how to keep the horses on task. One hour was perfect for someone who hasn't been on a horse for awhile. Use the provided bug spray and wear pants and sturdy shoes. Our family had a great time! We would totally recommend this to make your trip to Sunriver truly special. read more

Called to book a sleigh ride that had been agreed upon less than two weeks ago if 6 people were booking - now the stable is reneging on the agreement?The dates had been discussed and relaying that either wheels or runners would be an available option. Needless to say Gabby was extremely rude and condescending to myself on the telephone and was ill-mannered to my mother when she was attempting to make the reservation prior to my involvement. Fantastic experience! Did the 45 minute trail run de with my 7 year old son. He had been excited for the ride for weeks but when we got there he got scared. The crew was amazing in helping him feel safe and getting him on his horse Charlie. He loved the whole thing! They even gave him a horse shoe at the end! I saw a lot of negative reviews on Yelp, so went with low expectations. It was my 9 year old granddaughter and me. We had a positive experience from walking in the door until the end. We had two lovely young women as guides for a group of 8 for a 30 minute ride. The horses and customers are all treated well. Yes, it's expensive, but if you see what they go through for the horses, including the retired ones, and the competent staff, you can understand why. The ride was not skimpy and takes you through lovely view of water area, ducks etc. The weather was perfect too, though they probably don't get credit for that. read more

I'm in Sunriver for just a short time so thought I'd maximize the scenery I'd see with a one-hour trail ride. Unfortunately, you won't see much. It's a dusty trail that winds through some pine woods and doubles on itself several times. You do get to ride along the river but only very briefly. Was hoping to see more of the river and mountain side but just saw a lot of meadow, views you can see from the highway, and pines. Did get to see some deer but that's common throughout this area. The guide was nice but didn't talk much. So it was a pretty quiet and boring ride. I was hoping she'd tell us about the area or give some history. Would not recommend for the $60 price tag. I'd recommend they rethink their trails. read more

Expensive and UNSAFE!! Cost was $20 per pony ride that lasted approx 3 min (three times around a short track). We spent $80 (for four kid to ride) and we're there for 15 minutes at best. I'm not as concerned about the cost as I was about safety! One of the ponies, Blueberry, didn't want to be ridden and kicked at a mom (twice) when she tried to put her son on him. The horse obviously did not want to be ridden. On top of that, there were NO adults helping at the pony rides. The ponies were being led around by kids!!! I asked the oldest kid how old he was and he said he just graduated the 8th grade. The other boy leading the horses around looked to be about 10 years old. I found this very concerning especially since one of the horses was acting up. I do NOT recommend this place whatsoever. I would not be surprised at all if someone gets hurt here. Every time we go to Sunriver, I make sure to go on a trail ride at the stables. There are many things I love about it, and some things I wish I knew before the first time I rode here. 1. It can be very buggy along the river. It was never bad enough to stop me, but bug spray is definitely a good idea. 2. If you're an experienced rider, go for a private trail ride- totally worth it. If you go in a group, the skill levels will be varied and your trip may not be as exciting. If you want to have fun and run through the woods, private rides are the way to go. 3. Don't expect an absolutely stunning view. The path does partially run parallel to the river, and it's very pretty while you're there (you also get a few views of the mountains) but you will be mostly in the woods and fields (which is, in my opinion, still beautiful). 4. If you once rode a horse you liked while you were there, and go back to ride again, request that horse when you make your reservation. Sometimes you're able to get the horse you want. 5. Definitely overpriced 6. If you have your own riding helmet, bring it. The stables do have helmets of all different sizes there, but it's much more convenient if you have your own. 7. Keep in mind the weather! 8. All the guides are very friendly and make the ride enjoyable. I would recommend the stables to anyone who enjoys horses! P.S- If you get up early(ish) and bike to the fields, you can see the horses being herded into the stables from the fields. That is a cool experience! read more

Dangerous and incompetent. My daughter was thrown from a horse in the corral. They did nothing to control the horse and then not a single person went to help my daughter. I had to jump the fence to go to her aid. While I am assessing her for injuries I told the staff that I thought how they handled the situation was total BS. They had the gall to tell me that they did not appreciate my attitude. Keep in mind my daughter was still laying in the dirt in the corral. Your children and family are not safe here. If I could give them 0 stars I would! We had booked a sleigh ride several weeks ago. We left early for our sleigh ride as we thought we could walk there. Turns out you cannot walk there in the snow! We had called to tell them we were going to be late and the gal we talked with was great. Tried to help us with directions and said don't worry we will get you out when you get here. We walked some more and then realized it would be faster to turn around, get the car and drive back to the stables. We called again to let them know of our plan and had to leave a message. We received a call from Jackie who was extremely rude to us! We tried to explain to her that we'd been in contact with them already to let them know of our plans and the continued to be rude, nasty, and show us how terrible her customer service skills are. We then called back and asked to speak with a manager and were informed she was, in fact, the owner!!! We tried again to explain the situation to her and were told that we should've planned better and not been calling past the time of our sleigh ride. Mind you our first call was 30 minutes a head of the departure time and had consulted a map to make sure we could in fact walk there. No one from Sunriver Stables supplied us with directions! She continued with her horrific customer service and epic rudeness. Save your money for something else, this business owner doesn't deserve your hard earned money!! I did the 1 hour ride ($59 each) with my 7 & 13 yr old. It was fun just for the simple experience of riding such beautiful animals and being up close with them. An hour was more than enough as towards the end you kind of feel ready to wrap it up...kiddos were a little bored by the end. Scenery especially along the river is fantastic. My almost 3 yr old loved the 5-7min pony ride at $15 (again a little high for two loops through the "pony trail")...but worth the smiles and hearing him talk to his pony "Blueberry". Guide McKayla on the 1hr was very friendly and stopped halfway to check and make sure everyone's stirrups were still comfortable and ready to make adjustments as needed. At the end of the ride she kindly let me get off my horse first to allow me a couple minutes to run to my car to get my phone to take a pic of the kids on their horses (not allowed to take anything on ride). Took one star away as it is a bit on the expensive side and the staff should be more helpful with newbies to sort out helmets and such rather than just point them off to the direction they are located and finding several families trying to figure out sizes and such...not a huge deal, just could improve service in this area is all. read more

My daughters (12 & 15) and I took the 1-hour ride. The horses are calm and the facility is nice, but the ride itself is nothing special. The horses seemed tired and reluctant to go out (it was hot, so maybe that's why). The guides, Tristan and Kylie, were pleasant and tried to chat a bit, but not so easy when everyone rides single file on a trail. The ride is just a long loop around a dusty meadow with a short section on the way out & in along the river. Slow walking only. I realize it's an all-ages/beginner ride, but something a little livelier would bump the rating up a star. Also, even though the guides were pleasant, being able to share some history about the horses or area would up the interest level, too. Using an "outdoor voice" so everyone can hear would engage the group more. I felt like I wasted an hour and $177 when I could've done the same thing on our local CA beach for just a bit more money. My kids were definitely bored by about the halfway mark. Not a complete waste of time or money, but I would skip this ride when we come back to Sunriver. read more
