people sitting at tables in a restaurant
Gerald S.

It is always the sunny side of Main Street, Sayerville, NJ, when you visit the old school luncheonette, Sunny Side Restaurant. The large front window faces south and lets in plenty of sunshine to accompany any breakfast served by the folks who have operated this morning/afternoon delight. The same family has run the show for 30 years, and show no sign of getting tired. Blonde wood tables and booths are nearly wall to wall in this small space, with a six stool corner counter just outside the kitchen in the rear. That was where I settled in for coffee and a Sunny Side Up Omelet earlier today. It was all very good, and far more than I could consume in one sitting. Especially, with the overloaded eggs full of onion, pepper, sausage, home fries and feta, plus more potatoes on the side, and a slab of cream cheese on top, that I could only push away for risk of exploding. Oh, and let's not forget the sliced toasted rye. Heaven forbid! (Missed some apricot jam.) Service was friendly and informative, as I learned that my server was also the owner. She was proud of her business, and had kept many of the original employees on board. The house is bilingual, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. Definitely a place to go in the morning or afternoon with friends and neighbors for wholesome All-American grub. Prices in the happily affordable range. If I find myself in Sayerville again, I would not hesitate to make a return visit. My only suggestion is to put a bottle of Texas Pete at every booth and on the counter for those who like their's smoking hot, and that apricot jam.

Grew up in Sayreville, and heard about this place for years. Never really had an urge to try it before...but lately the fiance and I have been big on breakfast/brunch places. The 2 of us have been pretty spoiled though, eating at great brunch places in Philly and south Jersey, so yeah we have a pretty high standard level right now. Compared to some of these other places, Sunny Side Up doesn't exactly impress right away based on looks. However, getting past that, the food is actually pretty good! I went with the Eggs Benedict meal, which included a Coffee, Orange Juice, and side of home fries for like $9! Great deal, and everything was on point. Definitely gonna make my way to Sunny Side more often now that I know it's so good and so close to home.

The food here is tasty and won't likely disappoint. However the owner is just plain stupid. I once asked her for pancakes with strawberries and choc chips on top. She stopped, staring into space for almost an entire minute- finally snapped back with it, giggled and said "I'm just trying to figure out how to do that...I guess we'll just mix everything in the batter" I stopped her and said no- just put it all on top like I ordered. When she brought it out, choc chips were on one plate, strawberries on another. Today- I got ice in my orange juice. Who does that?! Every time she is my waitress, something comes out wrong. I stopped going there for a while because I couldn't deal with her stupidity first thing in the morning. OTHER THAN THAT...food is good, the rest of the wait staff is on their toes. Service is very fast. Cash only- ATM on site.

Pancakes, eggs, bacon, white toast and tomato juice to start my day! #7 on the menu :)

This little hole in the wall used to be much better last time I was here. (Over 10 years ago). Waitress wasn't friendly or social at all. I asked her what she recommends and she gave me a bad attitude - as if I was supposed to already be familiar with the menu. Then- She didn't check up on me once while I was eating. The food was not all that great. The pancakes were bla, the bacon was very little and had no taste as if it was microwaved, and the tomato juice had no ice in it so it was warm when she brought it out. Ekh! Pancake syrup wasn't even in a bottle or serving cup, it was in a plastic sealed to go packages. Yuck! Big turn off. The bill / price was not bad. 10 bucks... Won't complain but they apparently don't take credit cards. Come on now. We are approaching the 21st century. Get with the program. It's a local diner that succeeds off of old towns people who walk there, and hang out just to gossip about other towns people. I overheard several conversations of ppl talking about other people's divorces and family issues. I felt I was sitting in a negative cloud. Had to honestly run out of there ...was too much for me.....

Our waitress was great but she was working the entire side of the restaurant where we were sitting. This was especially pronounced because one of my guests couldn't leave late. Food: subpar. We were here a few times a few years ago and I remember it being much better. The wings were good, especially the sauce. The sticky ribs were too salty and the ribs, while tender, tasted dry and overcooked. The pastas we ordered were overcooked and soft. The beef bulgolgi wasn't great. It was ok. Overall, a disappointment. Price is high for quality of food. Ambience: I remember this place being more lively and full. This time, on a Friday night, at dinner time, it was half empty. Other: trauma alert- read at your own risk. Once read, it cannot be unread!! When my daughter opened her napkin with the utensils, a spider jumped out at her and she was screaming! It took a while to get another set of napkins and utensils but when we finally did, I had to open the napkin for her because she was afraid to open it....

All of us with very different diets ended up finding something we loved. All of the good: -There was no trouble for 4 of us to get a table around 2:30ish on a Saturday. The space is huge, and it looked like they were even holding a private party upstairs. -A big menu with lots of options. We had everyone from vegan to basically carnivore at the table and the only trouble came when we realized most of their bread options had milk in them. The friend with a vegan diet knew to ask, but this would have been totally missed by me. She ended up getting a noodle dish and we all ate very happy. -My veggie burger was pretty good! As much as I love them, I can be a veggie burger snob. It's one of those things that need to be done right and the Gusto Grill veggie burger was done well in my opinion. Loved that it was a bit different with edamame as one of the bases. A great meal and a great time getting together with old friends. Highly recommend!

It has a nice, elevated atmosphere, so you should dress semi-formal. Prices are on par with other upscale restaurants. The food has always been excellent and the service as well, most of the time. You absolutely MUST get the Clothesline Bacon as an appetizer. Make sure you slice some pickle with it and squeeze a little lemon juice on top! The manager urged us to try it that way during one of our visits - we never looked back. Rather than eating in the dining area, we chose to sit at the bar for their Foxy Hour (Happy Hour) offerings. There are plenty of tables surrounding the bar as well. We had the Clothesline Bacon, 6 Oysters, Hipster Fries, Spicy Lobster Mac, and we each got the happy hour burger. Everything tasted great, but the hipster fries were a little greasy and lacked the shishito peppers they had last time. We finished off with the Eclair Trio dessert from the Specials Menu. On two separate occasions we were seated at an awkward table in the back of the restaurant, right near the kitchen service area and door to the outside patio. We weren't thrilled to be there, as there was constant traffic in and out of the kitchen and through the doors. I think they should just do away with those seats, so everyone can have a relaxing dining experience no matter where they're sat. If you've got a special occasion coming it, Orchard Park is worth checking out!

Worth every penny - will be back to this exceptional place on my next visit to NJ.

Charlie and I both chose the Creekstone Ribeye ( I opted for the Horseradish Creme Fraiche) and our wives both chose the Crab Crusted Halibut. all entrees came out cooked to order and piping hot. We also shared an order of creamed spinach. No dessert as we were doing that at home, but the coffee hit the spot. JS is BYOB so don't forget to bring your wine. I was especially looking forward to ordering the ribeye and lit up instantly when the server listed it as one of the specials. The server shared that he would need to collect the orders for all of our courses at the same time which was fine with me. I actually had more confidence in the timing of everything for that reason. Our server had a delightful energy particularly at the beginning of our visit. After we placed our orders, everything began to fall apart. It did get noticeably busy since we first arrived, but we ultimately waited for our main entrees for over 3 hours. 3 hours. The table ordered the charred octopus and the oysters to start. The oysters hit the table fairly quickly, but then we began to gradually notice how long it was taking for the octopus to come. I had only a slither of the octopus so that I could say I tried it. Everyone at the table raved about the taste. I did, however, agree that their oysters were delicious especially when dressed with a little bit of mignonette, lemon, horseradish and a touch of Tabasco sauce. I'm excited to now report that I am a fan of fresh oysters from the east coast, because apparently the coast matters. The table also ordered the canaletto stuffed with mascarpone, parmesan and another cheese, langostines and lobster with morel mushroom cream sauce, garnished with truffles. I passed on this one also as it was too adventurous for my taste buds; although, their delicious bread and our drinks did distract me for a little while. The restaurant is BYOB, so we had our wine to keep us company while we observed other tables come and go. We eventually asked to see the manager and was told there wasn't a manager on duty which was either untrue or a very poor decision on the part of the owners considering it was a Friday evening. Having someone occasionally check in with our table may have also helped to take the pressure off of the server who may have gotten overwhelmed or decided to prioritize other tables. Having a manager offer a personal apology may have helped us feel less forgotten about. After the three hour mark, we decided this was enough. I didn't have much to eat at this point, but I wasn't at all worried initially since I was there for the main event, the ribeye. I stopped a hostess who was walking past our table and asked for the manager. We were again told the manager is not here but can be called, if needed. I simply replied, "Please do". Shortly afterwards, I noticed our server who at this time was standing by the host stand briskly walk into the kitchen and then return to our table with our plates. I sent the food back which was a decision that was supported by everyone at the table. Let me tell you, that was a difficult decision to make, but I also was ready to call it a night. Our mood had changed, and I truly felt like we were derservant of having the same experience as everyone else that night. Our server apologized for his part to play in the ordeal which I appreciated since I know his intention was never malicious, but unfortunately we had to call this night a bust. He offered us dessert on the house, and our entire meal was comped which we felt was an appropriate resolution. I ordered the Cinnamon Toast Crunch bread pudding which was a favorite. Very good. Jasper Stone is a beautiful establishment with decorative yellow and white floral arrangements throughout the dining area. It is clearly a popular restaurant and has many positive reviews. I regret that I could not have a comparable experience.

It is a welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff and cute simple decor that has a communal feel. The specials menu had some fun and exciting choices for st Patrick's day! There was also a listing for blueberry pierogies which we decided we just had to try. I think the concept is exciting and new- but the inside of the pierogies were only blueberries which weren't very sweet. We thought it could be even better with the addition of a sweetened ricotta, cream cheese, or mascarpone inside to compliment the berries. There was a drizzle of some kind of icing which was tasty and went well but there wasn't enough of it. We ordered our meals from their regular menu. They must have polish roots because pierogies and kielbasa show up on the menu a few times. I saw "pierogie omelet" and was sold. You can tell their pierogies are freshly made and it makes all the difference. I probably wouldn't get the omelet again because it was kind of a lot happening at once, however, next time I go I think I definitely would like to get the pierogi platter they offer because I enjoyed the kielbasa and pierogies so much. My sister got a strawberry arugula salad with crispy chicken. I did not try it but I tried a piece of chicken and it was deliciously crisp. She said everything was really good and the strawberries were perfect and ripe. My mom, who got the protein pancake with fruit on side agreed. My other sister got a tuna wrap which she also enjoyed. I also like that they do a 1/2 tea 1/2 lemonade with your choice of flavor. I got the raspberry and it was delicious - not too sweet but the flavor was there.
