Was looking for some breakfast on Main Street and ended up here. The restaurant itself was lovely and bright, and obviously cleaned very well. I had never been here before but I quickly got the feeling this is a place for locals and regulars. The waitress just in general did not seem interested in taking our order. She was very short and not friendly. But she was chatting it up with some other people who came in and seemed like regulars, so it just felt a little unwelcoming. However, the food was very very good! I had the eggs benedict and it was perfectly cooked and very delicious. My partner also very much enjoyed her food and said it was cooked to perfection! It is always the sunny side of Main Street, Sayerville, NJ, when you visit the old school luncheonette, Sunny Side Restaurant. The large front window faces south and lets in plenty of sunshine to accompany any breakfast served by the folks who have operated this morning/afternoon delight. The same family has run the show for 30 years, and show no sign of getting tired. Blonde wood tables and booths are nearly wall to wall in this small space, with a six stool corner counter just outside the kitchen in the rear. That was where I settled in for coffee and a Sunny Side Up Omelet earlier today. It was all very good, and far more than I could consume in one sitting. Especially, with the overloaded eggs full of onion, pepper, sausage, home fries and feta, plus more potatoes on the side, and a slab of cream cheese on top, that I could only push away for risk of exploding. Oh, and let's not forget the sliced toasted rye. Heaven forbid! (Missed some apricot jam.) Service was friendly and informative, as I learned that my server was also the owner. She was proud of her business, and had kept many of the original employees on board. The house is bilingual, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. Definitely a place to go in the morning or afternoon with friends and neighbors for wholesome All-American grub. Prices in the happily affordable range. If I find myself in Sayerville again, I would not hesitate to make a return visit. Went back to see our friends at Sunnyside Up on Main Street after 1 1/2 years away as they were closed for Covid ordered the same as we always have and we're not disappointed. Grew up in Sayreville, and heard about this place for years. Never really had an urge to try it before...but lately the fiance and I have been big on breakfast/brunch places. The 2 of us have been pretty spoiled though, eating at great brunch places in Philly and south Jersey, so yeah we have a pretty high standard level right now. Compared to some of these other places, Sunny Side Up doesn't exactly impress right away based on looks. However, getting past that, the food is actually pretty good! I went with the Eggs Benedict meal, which included a Coffee, Orange Juice, and side of home fries for like $9! Great deal, and everything was on point. The food lives up to the reviews! Very delicious. And the ambiance of the restaurant was enjoyable, though the booths sort of forced us to lean forward a little and were not 100% comfortable, I'd suggest the tables with the chairs (not a reason to not go, but worth mentioning). We ordered the hamburger with mushrooms and a side of home fries, a roast beef sandwich, eggs Benedict and corned beef hash. They didn't have any roast beef so we ordered a Philly Cheesesteak wrap. The hash came out first and was warm and tasty. Then came the meals after. I devoured the eggs Benedict (great ham with it and they gave me a real knife to cut with instead of a bread knife). My wife enjoyed the mushrooms on the sandwich and my mother in law ate through all of her cheesesteak with gusto. Here's why it's four stars, server experience: Server was not enjoyable, not friendly and very pushy. We didn't see her smile once and we were definitely wasting her time by asking questions about the menu. Also, we asked what was on the California Burger and she had no idea about the avocado. The girl who initially sat us down was much nicer and she actually helped us out more than our server, I wish she would've served us. Also, as we went to the back to pay the other workers/waitresses asked us about our meal and were extremely friendly, apparently we just drew the short straw with this one. The food here is tasty and won't likely disappoint. However the owner is just plain stupid. I once asked her for pancakes with strawberries and choc chips on top. She stopped, staring into space for almost an entire minute- finally snapped back with it, giggled and said "I'm just trying to figure out how to do that...I guess we'll just mix everything in the batter" I stopped her and said no- just put it all on top like I ordered. When she brought it out, choc chips were on one plate, strawberries on another. Today- I got ice in my orange juice. Who does that?! Every time she is my waitress, something comes out wrong. I stopped going there for a while because I couldn't deal with her stupidity first thing in the morning. OTHER THAN THAT...food is good, the rest of the wait staff is on their toes. This little hole in the wall used to be much better last time I was here. (Over 10 years ago). Waitress wasn't friendly or social at all. I asked her what she recommends and she gave me a bad attitude - as if I was supposed to already be familiar with the menu. Then- She didn't check up on me once while I was eating. The food was not all that great. The pancakes were bla, the bacon was very little and had no taste as if it was microwaved, and the tomato juice had no ice in it so it was warm when she brought it out. Ekh! Pancake syrup wasn't even in a bottle or serving cup, it was in a plastic sealed to go packages. Yuck! Big turn off. The bill / price was not bad. 10 bucks... Won't complain but they apparently don't take credit cards. Come on now. We are approaching the 21st century. Get with the program. It's a local diner that succeeds off of old towns people who walk there, and hang out just to gossip about other towns people. Another good little local spot that we enjoy going to. They only take cash payment but they have an ATM inside. The menu reminds me of a Denny's or IHOP and the food is very similar to them as well. What sets this place apart from those is the fact it is a family owned business that has been in town for over 50 years and the staff is extremely friendly and top of their game. You receive your food only minutes after placing your order, even when they are busy. They treat everyone with great service and a smile and that's what important when I go to a restaurant with my family. Tiny neighborhood diner on Main Street. If you want the most basic of basic of breakfasts go here. No seasoning or anything. No frills period. If you want a simple cracked egg and toast and coffee with some of the neighborhood locals then this is your place. Expect nothing at all more. Prices match. We used to frequent Sunny Side Up when we lived in the area. Our visits were mainly for breakfast after church since it is nearby, and they have an awesome breakfast selection. The place is conveniently located on Main Street, it does not have a private parking lot but there is plenty of street parking around; we just walked. This restaurant is homey, airy and clean with a friendly staff. Besides breakfast we occasionally went as a family to enjoy their daily specials! Great times! Our favorite breakfast dishes were the Sunny Side Special Omelet, Almond French Toast, Eggs Benedict, etc.; all fresh prepared served, hot and tasty. Just as a hearty breakfast should be! Among the many specials we enjoyed here were the fish fries on Fridays, meatloaf, roast pork with stuffing, beef goulash, and their daily made soups. My mom enjoyed the special "Senior Citizen" rate along with the great food! It is nice to have places like this to enjoy down to earth food at reasonable prices with family and friends. The biggest, best kept secret breakfast place in the area! I've lived here for over 20 years and never knew that this place existed, and boy was I missing out!!! I ordered the vegetarian omelet with the home friesssssss (seriously so good!) and it was amazing. Great mom-and-pop style restaurant. I work locally, so I decided to get take-out on the way to work one day after reading a few reviews. I stopped in midday on a weekend, and it wasn't too busy. I sat at the small bar by their register towards the back of the restaurant, and was quickly greeted with a menu. Basic diner-style menu with some good specials. Got an mixed omelet that came with home fries & toast. My waitress put my order in and it was out within minutes. Off to work I went, and it was worth the wait. Very basic order but I must say it was delicious. I've been back many times since. My only complaint is that the food can be a little greasy, but it's diner food. The staff is very friendly and if you've never been, you will probably notice some interaction with regulars, as there's bound to be some there. The price is right as well. A well-portioned breakfast will run you well under $10. The decor is basic, but definitely has the feel of a hometown staple. My one granddaughters pancakes were almost black on top, my hamburger had the look and the consistency of a hockey puck! Sunnyside is a Sayreville staple and those that have grown up here know it well. The food is solid, especially the omelets. I'm 33 years old and the majority of the staff has remained the same throughout most of my life. My only issue with Sunnyside is the owner's lack of interest in keeping the place fresh. The same dingy, dirty looking silverware and cups have also been the same as long as I can remember. The decor has changed once since I've been going there and DEFINITELY needs an update. The place is a gold mine so I just can't understand how obviously cheap silverware and dishware doesn't get replaced. If you want tasty food in a not so nice and clean environment for a reasonable price, this is your spot. Oh yeah, it's also cash only.
