My husband and I have made it a yearly tradition to stop by here over Christmas time. We spend Christmas in Pennsylvania with my family and we travel to NY to visit my hubs' brother every year. And a few years ago we went looking for a diner, to avoid service area fast food, and get something fresh and diner-y.... the type of good old american comfort food place we don't have much of in California where we live. Milltown Diner did not disappoint with their huge plates and low prices -- the way it should be. This is a local spot serving their community with hearty food, and I appreciate that. Mainly, we each get an egg breakfast sandwich and a side of hashbrowns to share. Last year, we were going to get two sides of hashbrown and the waitress was kind enough to tell us that one is likely enough for us to share -- and she was right. It was massive! This is what I'm saying -- she didn't just give us the two sides to make extra $$ or anything. Just honest people making good food for the community. I love their hashbrowns too, Extra crispy with bits of onion in it which gives it an extra dimension. The egg sandwich is rather huge too. I got mine with ham and it was stacked with ham, with a fried egg and american cheese on a huge kaiser bun. It's awesome. So even though it's a couple miles off from the turnpike, it's so worth it for a stop. Everything we got would be double the price in California. This small town diner can easily be missed. It shares an entrance with another business so the inside is rather small and outdated. However, it maintains a retro feel of a small hometown diner. The portions are rather larger and the price is right! I didn't care too much for the pancakes as they were dense and not light. The omelette I had was large and was okay. We've passed by often, but finally decided to stop by for breakfast. It has a very small town feel where the locals come by often. I had pancakes and bacon and my husband had an omelet. Service was great. We felt welcomed and the food came out fast. Portions are large, and you get your moneys worth for sure. My pancakes were just ok. Very dense. The coffee however was pretty bad. It was bitter. Had a few sips and couldn't drink anymore. My husband enjoyed his omelette and potatoes. If we come back, I'll definitely try something other than pancakes. read more

Can't believe I've never been here. Tiny place in Milltown right on the street. Blink and you miss it. I had the special apple cinnamon pancakes and a side of bacon. Pancakes were massive and stuffed to the brim. Absolutely couldn't finish. I expected pancakes just filled with apples, but these were like omelette style with apple filling. Apples were a little mushy and no cinnamon taste. Still really good. Bacon was perfect. Cooked well. Husband had the French toast. Great as well. Service was great. Had to ask for my OJ but that's ok. Can't wait to go back and try more stuff. Hopefully raise the stars to a 5 because it has potential. read more

We wanted to do food shopping and were looking for a place to eat. After reading the reviews, we decided to give this place a try. We were immediately seated after checking in. The diner is small and narrow, with the walls being a muted orange and the tables and floors being beige and dark brown. Canvases depicting food and diner-related pictures hang on one of the walls while a framed picture and a couple of flags hang on another. Miniature paper lanterns with the words "America the Beautiful" and "US" dangle from the ceiling along with miniature American flags. The counter also takes up a little less than half of the diner and a TV plays in the background for ambience. Daughter ordered the 2 eggs with corn beef hash and liked it a lot. She thought it was nice and crispy and that it was a nice change from soft corn beef hash. Hubs had the garden omelet, which is a 4-egg omelet and has mushrooms, tomato, peppers and onions). He liked that it was huge and the fact that he felt full after eating it. He hought it was a great omelette. Lastly, I had the loaded pancakes with bananas and 2 eggs. Okay food, nothing too special. I have been going here quite a bit and never had anything terribly inedible. Service is okay, slightly lackluster, but they have nice portions and plenty of specials for everybody. Prices are what you would expect for a diner so for that I have no complaints. To park you have to park across the street as there is no real parking for the business. But otherwise this place works fine for a quick breakfast or lunch. read more

It was delicious, homemade, thick and rich soup that literally had a little neck clam in every bite!!! The cook/owner delivered our sandwich- cool! Man, what happened here. I ordered online and omelets weren't an option. I ended up with an omelet wrap with super dry eggs. The home fries were nice and crispy and the breakfast sausage were good, but that wrap sucked. I ordered lunch too and it was all bad. I think this is the first burger deluxe I've ever ordered from a NJ diner that didn't come with lettuce tomato and onion. The also closed the bun on the cheeseburger, sealing that shut and preventing me from adding anything without destroying the top bun. Thanks. Burger itself was about what you expect from a diner burger, which is why it would have been nice to be able to get in there and help it out. Onion rings were all generic size and shape like burger king. Avoid those at all cost. Just a shame what I got vs. how I remember this place. read more

Not too shabby. Garden salad was decently fresh and good portion. Everything was really well priced. I had the southern panini which was large enough for leftovers. When Cray Café was closed earlier this week, I went searching for another place for breakfast in the Milltown vicinity. Yelp pointed out the Milltown Diner just around the corner on Main Street. One door is locked, another one has a Welcome sign hanging from it. So it goes. This is a small joint, with about ten booths and tables, and a counter with an equal number of spinners. I sat there to get an overview, although as the only customer, I had my choice of seating. Discovering they had no muffins available, I ordered their French Toast and Coffee. The java arrived first in a mug with a stainless pitcher of milk on the side. Gratitude for the leche which I prefer over half and half. It was strong, but flavorful and did the trick. The FT were three thick slices, grilled to a golden brown with a pitcher of syrup and frozen butter patty on the side. It was decent, although lacking the vanilla and sugar added to the egg mix that brings out the flavor and caramelization I desire on my grilled breads. The owner was present and provided a history of his 6.5 years here, and the 80 years that came before his arrival. Seems like a nice little place. I really did not like this place! The outside is unwelcoming, as it has a take-out restaurant-like outside. The inside is run down, cramped, and very old, even though this place has only been here for a decade! The service was quick, but I found the staff not really that friendly, and not happy to work at the diner, when it is a family business! I got an omelet with cheddar cheese, and onions! The onions tasted under cooked, and the eggs to me were very dry! They do give big portions, though! The potatoes that came on the side were very good. They were really nice and crispy! Was going to be in the North Brunswick area and did a quick online search for local diners and Milltown Diner came up with great reviews. My Dad and I were NOT disappointed. First of all as we were walking into restaurant we passed a few customers - every single one greeted us with a hearty GOOD MORNING! I though WOW so friendly and the friendliness continued right until we sat down. One of the employees came over quickly, gave us our menus and took our beverage orders. Within 5 minutes our waitress came over and answered questions and took our order - again SUPER friendly and Cheerful!! Our food, a Cheese Omelet with fried potatoes and French Toast with crispy bacon came out within 10 minutes and piping hot - everything cooked to perfection. Our waitress came by twice to check on us. We had looked around to what others ordered and not only our meals but everyone around us had large portions - my Dad leaned over and said "this is our new breakfast/lunch place" it really was good and reasonable. I just had breakfast at the Milltown Diner. Personally I wouldn't call it a diner. It's a nice very hometown cafe. Although I'm not a Red Sox fan I was happy to see Sox and Giants paraphernalia adorning the place not the Yankees. We arrived a little late for breakfast and early for lunch so they weren't busy. My wife and I sat at the counter so we could watch a little of CNN on the TV. I ordered scrambled soft with bacon, home fries and rye toast. My wife ordered a spinach, mushroom and onion omelette. The size of the portions were crazy. I didn't count but had at least 7 pieces of bacon,3 eggs and a huge portion of potatoes. I didn't finish the plate. Everything came out of the kitchen cooked perfect. The cook obviously cares! This place isn't fancy but it's clean and has a great breakfast. The breakfast menu is extensive. The Milltown diner is an excellent place to go if you are looking for an intimate, local breakfast or lunch spot. The restaurant was mostly full, but there was no line for a table for 5. The service was great, and despite the fact that there were only two waiters in the entire restaurant, our food came on time and I never had to pull the waiters aside for a glass of water for example. The food came in hearty portions. I ordered a French toast and got three large pieces of delicious Doughy bread, prepared to perfection. Even though I was hungry coming in, I was not able to finish my hefty meal. This is a great quick place to stop by if you happen to be passing by, and if I am ever in the area once again, I will make sure to enjoy another meal at Milltown diner. read more

Wow! What a great find. It's an old fashion diner. Nothing fancy but boy, oh boy the food was fantastic. I usually do not eat home fries because I'm fussy about home fries but I couldn't stop eating these! My omelette of mushrooms, spinach and onion was delicious! When the plate was placed before me, I couldn't believe the abundance of food. Staff was very friendly. Clean bathroom.
