Vision is basically a miracle…read more It all started with a random gene mutation which made a newly light sensitive protein about 700 million years ago. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtomics/animal-vision-evolved-700-million-years-ago/. Eventually fish developed eyes. Then the fish walked on land. Vision gave the species who had it a tremendous evolutionary advantage. Our today human binocular, focusing, color vision along with the visual system in our brain is a thing of beauty. Because our eye is complex, it can benefit from help sometimes in the form of eyeglasses, a unique human contribution to material evolution. We can correct limitations in the lens and shade our eyes with sunglasses. Eyeglasses are an expressive choice like clothing, footwear and accessories. Some Portlanders thought, "can we make eyeglass frames with wood?" And they did, making Shwood. You can see them all around town and they are made in Portland, Oregon, USA. They make sunglasses, pre-lensed, and prescription frames that a prescription lens can fit. They have wood, metal, acetate plastic in various combinations or solo as materials. They even have rare lines which use thin veneers of stone and shell. For the wearer they read design, organic, bold, and some, handmade. I have wood. They are super lightweight and well made. With prescription clear lenses, the pupil should be centered in the lens, unless you can pull off the 70's look without that. With sunglasses, the lens can be as big as you like. The Shwood sunglasses are not Jackie O big. But their designs tend to run wide, with medium to large lenses, and are bold style. Some are inspired by the 1950's Wayfarer. That's all very popular now. They do a stellar job with their eyeglass cases, mine came with a hand-sewn wool pouch, nylon lined + leather drawstring through aluminum eyelets. Their packaging boxes are beautiful too. They sell online through their website shwoodshop.com. They are on the socials and have an email including special deals. For their size, they do some of the best branding in the world. They have the styling and photography down. They do collaborations excellently. They do short videos. They go on camping trips. They tell a story of creative life set in our Northwest, one of the most beautiful places on earth, and the wider West ditto. In some of the narratives, the eyewear is just barely there or not even at all. That's advanced branding. It is a direct evolution of the original outdoor journal-catalog manifestos of Chouinard Equipment, Great Pacific Iron Works and Patagonia. Those brands changed the world in sustainable outdoor gear and evolved branding far beyond the Mad Men era. Shwood distributes to opticians if you need a prescription lens - there is a list on their website. The sunglasses can be found in all the cool - harmonious with the brand - shops of Portland. I look at Made Here PDX by Powells. Although available worldwide, the sunglasses would make a great made-in-Portland gift. And for visitors, with no sales tax here, a great pickup. When people ask you about them: "yeah, I got these in Portland." Shwood joins my list of Portland World Class. Because they are. And they join the Made in Portland With Sustainable Love list too.

Found 2 lovely pairs of frames, one Anne&Valentine. The other a Japanese designer. Tennyson helped me select the best frames for my face shape and lifestyle. I've bought eyewear here for 2 decades. Visage has a cool selection of frames-- but go somewhere else to have the lenses made-- their lab sucks. I've had great lenses made with ABC Vision and Eyes On Broadway. I want to say ABC in Hillsdale was the best Rx and lens ever. Eyes on B'way did honor a warranty, though, when the coating didn't last. But eh, the coating should last. I went to Visage because they had the frames I wanted. I had a decent eye exam there, picked out my frames, and was told it would be 2 weeks to make the lenses. It was a pretty typical experience. I came in on a Saturday to pickup, and man, something was WRONG with one of my lenses. Really off. I have a very light distance correction, progressive, prism. Nothing terribly complicated. I was told that "no one" was there to examine the lenses on the weekend, so I had to leave them there and I would be getting a call on Monday. No one calls Monday. Tuesday morning, still nothing. I called midday Tuesday, and yep, the Rx is wrong on one of my lenses. They now have to send the frame back to the lab for a new lens to be ground. They will call me in about a week, I'm told, and I should come in during the week if I want someone to verify they're correct. They close at 6. I really hate when businesses screw up, and really do the bare minimum to make it right. How about-- You have someone at Visage verify that the lab made the lenses correctly, especially now that I've already wasted one trip out there for faulty lenses? How about you staff an optician on Saturdays, so clients can have their problems addressed while they're in the office? How about you address problems with a sense of urgency, and not wait for the patient to call a few days later? And when you can't do any of those things, how about you at least offer a discount for the inconvenience?

My family has been a client of this optometry for about 3 years. The experience has always been…read moregreat: eye exams were quick and informative, front desk employees were always helpful and attentive. However this year's annual visit was anything but. It may be due to the change of ownership (I believe it happened either late last year or this year), but my experience with the front desk employee (Sam) was not great. Per usual, the exam was quick, the new doctor was nice and informative, and the other front desk employee (male with glasses) was extremely attentive and helpful. The issue came about a few days after my exam when I decided to use my annual frame allowance for sunglasses (I've had LASIK correction for a few years now). I called the office, Sam answered and I explained what I wanted to do - I've been utilizing this allowance for years. Sam looked up my insurance and asked if it was for prescription glasses. I said, "no, non-prescription". She then quickly told me that I couldn't use my insurance allowance for that purpose. I asked if the insurance had changed in the last year because I've been doing this for years. She said no, it's always been like that and that there's nothing they could do. After letting her know to double check the clauses of the allowance, she checked and noticed that clients with lasik procedures are allowed to use their insurance for sunglasses. She didn't apologize for initially providing me with incorrect information, she just went on and asked what frames I wanted. I told her the model and she noted they don't carry those. I thought I had gotten the same brand from them the year before and said "but I got them last year from you". Quicker than lighting she had already pulled up my prior orders to correct me: no I had not ordered that brand with them! She seemed annoyed that I was even asking. She proceeded to tell me that if I wanted that brand I would have to go elsewhere and referred me to a competitor. She didn't give me options to go online and use a prescription to order them myself, or anything else. I asked for my prescriptions (mine and my husband's) and headed to their competitor. Blessing in disguise - the front desk employee at this new place was a delight, the optician helped us get the sunglasses we needed without much hassle and we proceeded to schedule our 2026 annual eye check with them. This experience may not be representative of the entire practice, but it shows you that customer retention is just about being nice and patient with your clients.

I could not read with this pair, it was the wrong prescription, so I took them back. The guy I spoke to, Paige Carpenter, was rude and refused to take the glasses back. I asked to speak to Amber and they told me to call back on Monday since she wasn't in the office. This is very frustrating as I am a senior and need my glasses. I can't read anything. What happened to courtesy and good customer service? I didn't experience any during my visit there. Paige needs some training in that department. So folks, I would go somewhere else for better treatment if I were you.
