No "five star review" from me. And I'll never go back. The selection is pretty good (but let's face it, if you find frames you like, just go online to buy them a lot cheaper). The service is civil and they take time when it's clear you're going to be dropping serious money. But, after dropping over 400 dollars on lenses (I brought my own frames to them, but read on about that) and I asked for a box to put my new glasses in, they said "Ten dollars". Really? After all the dough I just spent? It left a bitter taste in my mouth and I probably won't go back because of that petty gesture. Ironically, the frames were purchased FROM THEM two years earlier for a few hundred bucks. Not a good way to end what was a good experience. There are too many other choices in town. Good bye, Blink. I've been going to Blink for many years - several eye exams, purchasing frames, and lenses. Today, when picking up my frames and new lenses, I asked for a glass case. However, I was informed that since I did not bring in a case, there was not one for me. I was handed a micro-cloth instead. I stated that even with insurance, the cost of these lenses was over $350, and that surely, with all the frames in the store, they could find a case for me. I was told no, there was no extra case available. How sad that they value a $2 case over a customer who has been coming there for years. I think it's their attitude that drove me to write this negative review, just dismissive. So I suggest taking your business to Asterix Eyewear or Beaumont Vision, as I will be. read more

The most positive experience I've ever had at an eye appointment. Booking was so easy on the phone, and they emailed me my expected expenses and coverage. I was greeted with the most friendly people when I walked it. The aesthetic is gorgeous. I met with Dr. Armstrong, and he was soooo nice. Super selection, but prices are on the highest end of the spectrum of various boutiques I shopped. In-store staff weren't pushy, they were knowledgeable and nice. Of course, everything I tried "looked awesome" according to them. What I didn't like was the lack of mirrors. I want to pick-up a pair, look up and see my reflection. They only have a few large mirrors you need to walk to. Also, when asked if they accepted a certain type of insurance, rather than a simple "no" I got a lot of workarounds, that their discount was actually better, etc. Just say no next time. read more

Bang For Your Buck - Eye Exam: 5 Stars The eye exam is amazing - they're really thorough, and the doctor that did the exam was funny, personable and awesome! It's $88 dollars, which is middle of the road for exams in this town -- not the lowest I've seen ($45, America's Best) or the highest ($145, Hawthorne Vision Center). Despite the cost being middle of the road, it's a case of getting far more than you pay for (as opposed to the poor service of America's Best). Even if you don't plan on buying your frames here, I strongly recommend taking your eyeballs here to get them checked out. You won't regret it. Bang For Your Buck - Frames: 4 Stars Oh, man. I wish I had a spare six hundred dollars to spend on glasses, because I'd SO be dropping it here. I've rated the frames bang for your buck at four stars because this is a case of getting exactly what you pay for -- high quality designer and unique frames at their market price. Most frames start at $240 and go up from there -- they have a small selection of Eco frames, which are made from recycled materials, and range from $130-240, but if you're on a tight budget chances are you won't necessarily find what you're looking for here. Nevertheless, it's great to try on frames after your eye exam to get an idea of what you're looking for. And if you do have insurance or a little more in the way of discretionary funds, do get your glasses here - you're sure to find a pair of frames that are as unique as you. Ambiance: 5 Stars Blink is furnished by Ikea, and in a completely cute and useful manner. I love the orange walls, turning displays of hanging glasses, and comfy chairs placed by the windows. Mirrors are ample and large, and the folks who work there are cheerful, authentic, and engaged. Not to mention super queer friendly! I had a miserable experience with Blink and they left me hanging in a terrible and easy to fix situation. At Blink they do not abide by the Oregon State rules for a two year maximum for eye prescriptions and instead chose to write only one year prescriptions. Sincerely recommend going anywhere else. Sales staff are pushy and don't care about what fits the customer's face. The optometrist forces prescriptions that are stronger than 20/20. The owner won't help to straighten things out. I now have a pair of glasses that are too strong, way too small, and cost more money than I wanted to spend. On top of that, the glasses hurt my eyes. I went in to Blink after the glasses started hurting my eyes, and was repeatedly convinced to keep the glasses. Big mistake. I was super bummed that my optometrist on Clinton street, Eyedentity had closed shop and I was on the hunt for a new optometrist. When it comes to healthcare or doctors in general, I don't ever use Yelp, because each person's opinion is completely subjective, and they could be whining about something completely minute. I will write reviews, only if it's a stellar experience, because I think that's fair. I've walked/driven/biked by Blink on numerous occasions, and it was the first place that came to mind. I checked with my insurance to see if they were in network, and that day I made an appointment. I was able to make an appointment for that following week, which was pretty quick for a new patient. As soon as I enter, I am greeted immediately and let them know that I have an appointment. I am offered tea, which I oblige to. The process was quick, and I also had my PD measured, as I like purchasing cheapie glasses online. I am not too crazy about the prices and the style of glasses that they have, but they provide quality care, and ultimately that's the only thing that matters to me, anyway. I was upfront and let them know that I was purchasing glasses online, and they were completely fine by it, and offered to take a look at them, once I had purchased them, to see if they fit correctly. Well, hell, I took their offer and swung by with my glasses, and not only were they adjusted, but they were cleaned as well. Their selection is huge, their frames are all hand-picked, one-of-a-kind pieces from some of the best designers around the world. Moreover, every single person who works there is fantastic, has great taste, and the one-on-one (or more accurately, three-on-one) experience during COVID is pretty awesome. I really had a good experience at this place. I was there solely to purchase frames/lenses but I've also heard good things about their Doc on staff. Dudes on the floor were extremely helpful and are total frame-geeks. I wish I knew their names so I could give them all proper praise. I felt like a f$&%ing rock star the second I walked through the door. Via a very quick process of elimination they were able to narrow down what I wanted to a couple handfuls of frames and helped me pick the best ones based off my face shape, personal preferences, and even my background as an industrial designer. They took into consideration design process, manufacturing details, material usage and even background stories of how certain designs came to be -- all based off the conversations I had while I was there. This attention to detail and passion (without pushiness) is hard to come by. They are pricey yes, but the product and experience is unique and quality. The selection is incredible and can certainly be a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, whoever owns/operates this place knows how to hire. Every single employee was enthusiastic, perceptive and attentive. OK. I admit it, I'm very picky about glasses. For the past 5 years I've been wearing glasses from Silver Linings in NYC. They set a very high standard. I wear progressive lenses and Slver Linings advised me to use the finest Japanese progressives. I was delighted and later discovered when I tried to get a pair of glasses from Lenscrafters, that cheaper progressive lenses simply can't match the performance of the lenses Silver Linings sold me. So, now I live in Portland Oregon. So I consult Yelp for the best optometrist and come up with Blink. So, why do I think you should be warned? Not because of the doctor, the eye examination was conclusive. I've had plenty of eye exams in the past, where you weren't quite sure if they really got it right. This doctor gets it right, and it's convenient to have a doctor in the store. Silver Linings can't do that. The problem is that the sales staff is smarmy and deceptive. I had read Yelp reviews before I went that mentioned the prices, so I asked for a quote on lenses for existing frames. The salesman went over my needs (finest Japanese progressives- Seiko, scratch resistant coating etc.) and quoted a price. I asked if this was all the best they could do. He said yes, it was the best. I said I'd like to think about it and compare prices. I returned the next day (without shopping anywhere else - I liked the doctor after all), and said I'd like to buy the lenses. Well, the smarmyness index went over the top, I was asked if I'd like an iced tea? No, I'd like to order the new lenses, I replied. Then he started asking if I'd like improved scratch resistance, plastic types etc. I said that he had already quoted all that yesterday, and he replied, well this is an improvement over that. Then why, I asked, did he tell me yesterday before I was to go shopping that he'd quoted the best? He said he was sorry, then he smiled in the most infuriating way. I think he knew I wasn't going to go for it, so he wanted to save face. I said, that was a lie yesterday wasn't it? He said, I'm sorry you feel like that, and smiled again. This place has many glowing reviews, and I understand why: everyone who works there is friendly, they offer you coffee, and the frame selection is great. I've had two exams at this place, and have hesitated to write this review until now exactly because everyone was so nice, but let's be real: this is the worst eye exam I've ever received. I went to them after spending a year ordering contacts overseas to avoid the cost of an eye exam; at $140, they were the cheapest. I was surprised to find that my prescription hadn't changed that much, though I was having a hard time seeing road signs. In fact, the prescription in my left eye showed vision improvement. That couldn't be right. Still, I let it go because the doctor I saw insisted that my vision "didn't need to be 20/20." Okay...if it doesn't need correction, why am I here? Still, I was able to make it work, and told myself it must be my imagination that my vision seemed worse. The second exam was a year later, and even worse that the first, and was the fastest eye exam I've ever had in my life. Keep in mind I'd mostly gone to places like Sears or Lenscrafters before this. She gave me two different options for contacts, and I told her which ones worked better...and she didn't correct the prescription. Now if I order from 1-800-CONTACTS, they have a prescription that states that one lens is too strong, while the other isn't strong enough. Great. When I attempted to call about this, I reached a dead end through a newish person on the phone who didn't seem to understand what I was talking about. Suffice it to say, I'm ordering overseas again. I've since encountered others who have had the same experience: friendly service, a beautiful office, but an awful exam. This, and other reviews reporting the same thing, lead me to believe that this is an ongoing problem they should take seriously. My experience here was not so great. I brought in a pair of frames to be filled, frames I love. I noticed a week later one of the Gucci emblems was gone which sucked and cant be replaced so now one of the temples has an empty cut out where the emblem used to be....oh well, but thats not the biggest issue The girl who did the exam was sweet in a Portland hipster way (what would you expect, really?) But she seemed determined to pick up something with my eyes no other optometrist ever did...and gave me the whole run down of blah blah blah....after I picked up my prescription basically I always felt some weird fish eye thing happening which I was told would pass and didn't, and for the next 6 months my eyes were fucking killing me....after I moved I went and had another exam and was told that she just made them way to strong with all kinds of corrections I never needed. I gave them two stars because they did do an exam, which seemed to be accurate, and the guy doing it was nice and quick. After that it went down hill. I have never had glasses before, so I was hoping for some education and some questions that would help guide me to the 'right' pair of glasses. I told them fashion was not important, function was critical for my work and my life. They kept going back to fashion related things, "what shape frames do you like..." I got so frustrated I left and brought my wife the next time to help me. I ended up walking out with some very expensive glasses. I was struggling to get used to them, so I would call up and they kept saying, "give it time." After three weeks and calls and emails with Dr Armstrong, I went in ready to ask for my money back. A guy named Chris pointed out that my framed weren't adjusted to my face. After that I could actually see. Then they suggested that I try the Transition lenses, which change to dark glasses automatically. It sounded really great, so I paid the extra money.... Then I left the country to go back to where I work and live in the Tropics. I found out that Transition only works if they are in direct sunlight. No one in the Tropics stands with their face in the Sun!! Now I am back in the US for a bit and called them about this. They want $400 to change the lenses. And, incase they don't tell you. Transition lenses need direct sun to change... that means that in the car, they don't change. To me they are selling cool technology that doesn't help us in real life. I think they are a rip off. This place is so hip and so cool. I took a picture for my family optometrist out of state and said, how 1987 does your office look now? He responded with, I liked 1987, it was a great year. Walking in I was already on ice cream high from 50 licks just around the corner. I did a simple Tahitian Vanilla, hand made in shop with lots of love swirled in, but I digress. Blink. Yes. Walking in, I see shimmering lights, dangling little mirrors, a few cute classy looking workers, and glasses. Glasses of every shape, size, color, style. I saw lights shine down and heard angels sing. I was in eyeglass heaven! Ive been wearing glasses since 8th grade, when it was NOT cool to wear glasses. In fact, I wish I had the glasses back from 1989 that the kids use to laugh at me with, bc I'd be the coolest kid now. I have always had a passion for frames :) Now. Having my infamous chipmunk cheeks, a heavier face structure and a my dads forehead, sometimes finding the right pair can be a pain in the glass... I mean ass. I get easily embarrassed bc being a bigger gal, the glasses I try on can tend to look like kids frames. However, while talking to 3 different associates, at different times while waiting for my friends eyeball appointment to be over, they ALL had a perfect pair for me to try on! Spot on with measurements and listening to the styles I like, each one of them were able to suggest a pair that I fell in love with each time. I bought a pair of Kate Spades on the spot and have my penny bank already collecting for my next pair which is made from recycled and earth friendly organic materials. I swear ONLY in Portland. Such a cool shop that did NOT make me feel unwelcome or unhip. This place is great. First, I decided when it was time to get new glasses that I would just go whole hog and buy glasses at a place that was service oriented rather than going to my local Fred Meyer (or [insert other store]). I had come to the conclusion that I honestly don't enjoy paying hundreds of dollars for a single accessory only to receive subpar service. Yet, this had become the norm in my glasses-purchasing experience. I decided to break this habit, so I looked up what the most well-loved glasses shop was in Portland (a place that certainly loves its glasses). Hands down, everyone loved Blink. So, I decided to give it a go. My expectations were truly exceeded, and I was already expecting at least The Very Best Experience in Eyeglasses (according to the internet). I was served beverages to help the glasses-choosing time go more pleasantly. Blakely was kind and attentive. She helped me find the best frames (as featured in my user photo!). Searching on my own at [insert other optical store], I never would have taken these off their wall for myself. I've received many compliments on them and I always refer my friends to Blink. Blink also filled out my insurance paperwork for me, even when I thought I didn't have coverage for new glasses. However, they took the time not only to file it for me, but to call my insurance company so could tell me that, surprise, I was covered. At other [insert optical shops], I've had to fill out my own insurance claims. Lastly, one great thing about Blink is that they took photos of me wearing my last choices in glasses. I thought that was very helpful so I could see all the glasses on me side by side. I thought that was a very thoughtful touch. All in all, Blink is very customer-service oriented, which seems so far afield from the other places I have frequented. If I'm going to be spending so much money on one accessory for my face, then I prefer to purchase them from a place that makes me feel comfortable and well attended to. OK, so you are looking for an optometrist, and the choices close to your office are not very great, and you don't like the national chains, what do you do? Well, you say to yourself "you've never used Yelp for anything beyond gastronomy, why not give it a try?" So then you look at the ratings for optometrists in Portland and here's a place with 80 ratings, and about 75 of them are five star and nothing below a four. Bullshit? Nah; you couldn't get that many folks to lie on your behalf even if they all owed you money. Typically the best grade that an optometrist or optician can get is a "C", so I concluded that there must be something to it and I'll give them a try. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to be helped by courteous, capable, and enthusiastic professionals who appear to thoroughly enjoy their interaction with customers. The level of personal attention I received was impressive. Dr. Curttright was thorough and efficient and careful to be sure that I clearly understood why I was beginning to experience headlight glare while driving at night. I wasn't rushed and felt very comfortable with her apparent level of knowledge and experience. She even spent a little time helping the other staff people with frame selection! I'm probably a bit older than their typical customer, but the staff did a great job of finding frames with the right combination of modernity and function without me ending up looking like Elton John. Again, their enthusiasm was genuine, trying this and that frame until they got it just right. They said that the glasses would take ten days to two weeks to make, and on the tenth day they arrived. This was an absolutely first rate experience. If you need to get glasses (or contacts i suppose) this is the place to go. read more

At some point while I was trying on frames here, I actually said to the woman helping me, "I'm a sparkly girl, but I'm not a butterfly girl." What I am trying to say is that they had some really great frames available. Bejeweled, besparkled, be-butterflied...it took at least half an hour to narrow my choices down to two. (I'm sure they have good "boy" frames too, but I wasn't looking for those.) Then I spent another half an hour debating which of the two to get. The best part is, Dr. Fast & Blakely were totally juicing it along with me! Running around, grabbing frames, trying them on.... They were super-helpful & nice - at one point we even brought in an "outside" person with a fresh perspective to help me decide between those final two. And as I suspected I would, I ultimately chose the dark purple glasses with sparkles on top. I think they were almost as excited as I was. Bonus: the eye exam was quick, painless, & air-puff-free! I would give this place less than one star if I could. They make absolutely no accommodations for the visually disabled. Their glasses are on a wall with a busy graphic behind them. The glasses are not protected by plexiglass. They would not let me get less than six feet of the frames, telling me to point at what I wanted to try on. I could not see any of the frames well enough to pick anything out. I kept telling them I could not see the frames and they refused to help me in any way. I left in tears. I bought two pairs of glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses at a more helpful and better designed store. read more

I didn't have insurance to cover my eye exam and after calling around town I found that Blink had the best pricing for that. Upon my visit I was greeted and assisted by a genuinely friendly staff. The Dr. who gave me the eye exam was very patient and helpful with answering any questions I had and seemed knowledgeable on the subject. I didn't get a good opportunity to look at the frames for my own personal reasons, but the few I did gander at seemed very unique, hip and definitely ones I would have to spend time searching around for on my own. I like unique attire so this was definitely a bonus to me. The prices of those were average. They also have a fairly large tea menu, rad mural and decor which was a nice touch to the experience. I LOVE my glasses. Had a great experience @ Blink - sales people were super helpful, friendly, and let me try on each and every pair of glasses in the store. Some twice. It was like shoe shopping. I think somebody decided that they wanted this place to look as unclinical as possible. So, big open space, weird plastic art installation, strange furniture in the waiting area. But the thing to emphasize here is that they've got all the basics of running a service-oriented business down pat. Hence the 5 stars. You walk in here, you will get the attention of a friendly, intelligent employee quickly and without effort. Everybody seems to know what they're doing, and when you need something to happen, it happens. Eye exams are a little low-tech -- the optometrist tests your peripheral vision by waving her finger around. Not that I miss the fancy machine -- three decades in the computer industry have not made me a fan of unnecessary technology. She knows her job, she gets it done quickly, and that's what matters. I'm tempted to carp about the sillier stuff -- the beverages, the fact that the employees are all trained to keep conversations going with customers, the couch that's more decorative than sitable. But why complain about an uncomfortable waiting area when you never have to wait? That's it in a nutshell -- they do all the stuff that really matters really well. read more

I have never had such amazing service during an eye exam. And their glasses selection is awesome. The only downside, sadly, is the price they charge for their glasses. I'm am without a doubt that you get what you pay for, but I just didn't have the funds to afford 99% of their frames (before lens were added). They do have decently priced eye exams.
