I've been going to Blink for years, and it is about time I wrote up a proper review. I first found Blink because my existing Portland optometrist closed down, and I was also looking for these very rare frames called Parasites. To my surprise, Blink carried them, so I visited the shop one day and was pleasantly surprised. Not only did they help me to find glasses that fit my face, they contacted the founder of the Parasite eyewear company when I came back a full two years later with broken frames. Though the style was no longer available, Blink was able to get some extra pairs ordered. This was only one example where Blink has gone above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to incredible customer service, great optometry and an awesome location in the Clinton district, they deliver tremendous value that's worth the price. Sometimes I just go in there to see the cool new stuff they might have. This is my new place of choice and, in my opinion, the best high quality eyewear shop in Portland. In short: GO HERE, YOUR EYES WILL THANK YOU! Why I Went: For months, I was experiencing tired eyes whenever at work (on computers), and my headaches became so constant that I haven't read a book in months (the longest I think I've ever gone without reading a book). I had my first eye appointment in over a decade here. I chose to go to Blink because of the amazing Yelp reviews. I left with my very first prescription. Surprised? I wasn't. Examination: My appointment was with Dr. Ashley Erdahl and she was personable, sweet, thoughtful, insightful. She was everything I wanted in an eye doctor. She answered all of my questions and even explained the contraptions she was using to me and told me what they were telling her about my vision. Diagnosis: I have astigmatism and I'm far-sighted. The appointment itself went fast, so I was surprised she knew already what my vision issues are and the prescription I would need, too. Apparently, I'm a "glasses-all-the-time" person, and she helped me understand what that really means to my day-to-day lifestyle. I'm going from 0% to 100% and she sincerely wanted to make my transition less stressful. Shopping: I decided to purchase my frames and lenses at Blink. I was passed along to someone who helped me shop for the right frames for my face and eyes for about 45 minutes. It was really sweet, and I felt comforted knowing that I wasn't alone in this, because honestly, going from no glasses ever to picking out a pair I will need to wear all the time every day is a little overwhelming. Price: The glasses I bought are name-brand (which is atypical of me, but these frames rock). The appointment itself is very reasonable, though, and there's no pressure at all to buy from Blink. This really comes down to what your budget allows. Delivery: I ordered and paid for my prescription the same day as my diagnosis, and I ordered a pair they had available in-store, but wanted a color they had to ship in - after that, the frames had to be sent to their lab. I was told that my glasses would be ready between 1 - 1 1/2 weeks, but they were all ready to go five days after my frame order was placed! They feel and look fantastic. Since when does the memory of a visit to the optometrist put a smile on my face? I've had glasses since 5th grade, and I can honestly say that until Blink, I've despised every single visit to the eye doctor. (In this case, "despised" also means "cried during a glaucoma test.") But now? I sort of want to get another exam, just for fun. FUN. EYE EXAM = FUN. I know, I can't believe it either. My experiences here really could not have been better. Dr. Armstrong is the nicest, most gentle doctor ever! He kept me relaxed and worked with me to find contacts that fit my eye better than any I've had before. When we found out that the brand I was getting had a rebate, they filled out all the paperwork for me and put everything in a stamped envelope -- all I had to do was cut out the UPC! When I came to get frames, the man working patiently waited while I tried on 3 zillion pairs. I had it in my mind that I wanted some of those giant, "ugly on purpose" glasses, and after I'd narrowed it down to several of the least flattering pairs, one of the employees said, "Hey, how about these?" and presented me with a pair that actually worked with my face shape. They're feminine and awesome, and I still can't believe he was able to look at my face and immediately pick them out as something that would flatter me. Whenever I see girls on the bus with giant, awful glasses, I silently say a prayer of thanks: thank you, dude from Blink, for helping me not look like a page from the Urban Outfitters catalog. To top it all off, they even sent me a handwritten thank-you card after I picked up my glasses! How great is that? This is what going to the doctor should be like, always. read more

I was the worst imaginable patient. First my corneas were in such bad shape that they had to send me home with steroids for a week. Then they saw me a second time and gave gave me my prescription. I called them a few weeks later to say that my prescription wasn't working and they had me come back in. They saw me a third time....prescribed me different steroids and gave me daily contacts to use for the week. A week later I went back... a FOURTH time do get my updated prescription. They ordered various contact brands for me to try on. They never seemed irritated and never charged me more than the initial 88$. Why wouldn't I go back? Blink is amazing and I will never trust my old eye doctor again. Oh, and did I mention that if there's an available rebate for lenses they do all the paperwork for you?! yeah, awesome... Oh and their contacts come in cute takeout boxes... yet another win. Don't get me started on the frames. I have yet to avoid a compliment when wearing them. read more

I'd been wearing the same pair of glasses for almost 8 years and really needed a change. I'd already gone to several other eyewear places but couldn't find any glasses that I liked and that flattered my face. When I walked into Blink, a friendly employee approached me and asked if I needed help. I told her that I wanted plastic, flexible frames but that I didn't really have much of an idea beyond that. Within 30 seconds she handed me frames that suited my face perfectly and were even tinted with my favorite color (that part must have just been a lucky guess). She also showed me several other promising pairs but in the end I bought the first ones she plucked off the shelf. I will definitely be going back the next time I need eyewear. read more

This place was incredible. I first came here when my boyfriend was looking to find some new frames, he ended up going with the Moscot Lemtoshs'. Normally when you go looking for glasses you are just bombarded by a sales person trying to sell you a pair of frames; the employees at Blink have something very special though. Each of the pair of glasses they carry have a very unique story and history behind them making you not only buy the glasses for the look but also for what the company has done. They are not overbearing and give you just enough information and time to try on some specs without feeling like they are hovering over your shoulder while staring at yourself awkwardly in the mirror. I ended up going back to get my prescription updated and the vibe was exactly the same way as the few months I was there before, relaxed, enjoyable, and helpful. When I tell you that I have eye problems, that's not even the start of it. I've been wearing glasses since I was 18 months old, and had been going to the same optometrists since way back then. I began to get frustrated with them, and that's when I looked up Blink, and decided to give them a go. The first thing that I noticed was their incredible and helpful staff when I first called to schedule an eye exam. Once I got to the office I was surprised at how different it was from every other doctors office that I've been in. The staff was welcoming, and the first thing they did is asked my if I wanted something to drink. Once I was having the eye exam Dr. Cartwright listened to all of my concerns, and we went from there. She changed a lot about my prescription, but they were all for the better! I'm now able to see more clearly that ever before, and I owe it all to the Blink crew! Their frame selection is second to none. They have an incredible selection of high-end frames, I was like a kid in a candy store! I ended up with a pair of SALT. frames for my normal glasses, and a beautiful pair of Masunaga 025s for my computer glasses! There is no better optometrists in Portland! I've been visiting eye doctors and opticians since I was a very small child, and Blink is BY FAR the best experience I've ever had. They have removed the "clinic" aspect of the whole eye doctor experience, both with a hip decor and great vibe. You walk in and the staff is super friendly and warm, but I didn't feel "chatted up" like I do in some retail stores. They seemed super genuine. They even offer coffee or tea, water, whatever, like at a good hair salon. And if you don't want it when you get there, they'll give it to you to go when you leave. Such a nice touch on top of the incredibly warm and welcoming atmosphere. The eye exam itself was as painless as could be imagined. The doctor was warm and friendly, explaining what she was doing and answering questions thoroughly, while making the whole thing seem rather enjoyable. She gave me several options that she explained super well. I don't need new frames, but if I did, I'd definitely come to Blink, too. They have a huge selection and I saw several just in passing that looked really awesome. On top of all this amazing service and selection, the costs are generally the same or lower than the nearby competition. And... you can stop at 50 Licks for the best ice cream in the world on the way home. Who could ask for anything more? read more

The glasses here are all darling and the staff is super friendly and helpful. The eye appointment went by quickly and they cleaned and tightened my glasses during the exam. I didn't buy any glasses this time, but I may be back to purchase a new pair when my insurance renews. The glasses here are very pricey, so I wouldn't come here if you are looking for a deal - but they have no problem writing a prescription to take to another shop or to purchase cheaper frames online. read more

Blakely is fantastically helpful. They also stock a fantastic variety of frames including hard to find LaFont Re-editions and Parasite frames. All the staff is helpful but never pushy. They let you take your time, which is important when you're trying to pick something that's going to be on your face every waking hour. The hand-written thank you note was especially thoughtful. The card itself was beautiful - which just punctuates the fact that Blink has great taste! You can trust that you'll find a perfect set of frames here, and be treated to excellent customer service. read more

I went to Blink to get new glasses.I originally planned on getting my glasses online, but Blink is just around the corner from where I live, and I would rather support a local business. When you walk in their store, you'll see the walls covered in lots and lots of different glasses. Whether you want a unique, brightly colored pair, or a conservative one, Blink has you covered. Seriously though, there were matte, shiny, textured, and wooden finishes, plastic, wood, metal frames, and all sorts of different colors and shapes. You have to be either looking for an extremely unique pair, or just an extremely picky person to not find something you like here. Anyway, the reason why I give them five stars is because of the staff. The moment I got there, I was greeted and given assistance, especially since it can be a bit overwhelming with all of the glasses. Almost every person there were giving me pairs to try on, asking me what I liked, and giving me more pairs to try on based on what I liked. And everyone was so friendly! No one was pressuring me to buy, instead, just letting me take my time to decide. They even offer really good complimentary drinks. I ended up getting a pair that one of the staff picked out for me, and I absolutely love it so much. I got my glasses in less than a week after I picked them out (even though they said it was going to take a week.) I've gotten so much compliments on my glasses (because they really are so friggin' cute.) And even better, I can actually see! I love Blink! These folks have taken great care of me again and again. I was happy today to find out that they consider me a 'regular'! I bought a wonderful pair of glasses there about a year ago, which I get compliments on every time I wear them, and I go there to get my eye exams and buy contacts. I have very sensitive eyes and have had several occasions where they have gotten scratched or infected and Dr. Curtright has been a great help to me in getting my eyes back to health quickly. I am in school to be an acupuncturist and I love that she understands my desire to use natural therapies as much as possible. She always explains things clearly and helps make things as affordable and easy as possible. I love that all the people who work here are always smiling and seem really happy to be a part of this place. I also recommend friends to check out Blink because usually several of the staff will come gather around you enthusiastically picking out frames and giving you options of what looks great on you! Made it to my 4th decade before needing eyeglasses & even though I live in Vancouver I come to Portland for many things because the selection is just so much better when it comes to food (both grocery & dining out), electronics, furnature & in this case eye wear. Since this was my first time I turned, once again, to yelp. My decision to vist here for my exam 6 months ago was a simple one...3x more reviews than any other optical place in Portland & they were all steller reviews, minus one(?) & they didn't like the price of the glasses (I'll address this later). Granted, I haven't been to an optomitrist since I was in college & I was a nerd before it was cool. (Yes, Sophia, there was a time when being a nerd wasn't cool. Oh, no no...I've always been cool...just nerds weren't) But the exam was amazing as I had no idea the advancement in the technology used. It was over quick & while they don't bill my particular insurance company they filled out all the paperwork for me & even sent me home with an addressed envelope ready to go! Fast forward 6 months... I admit, I don't have style...I mean I have a style, but I don't have 'it.' You should know this, because I already shared I was & am a nerd. However, my friend Valerie does have 'it' & so much more, so I run most of my fashion decisions through her...except when I decided I was going to bring cufflinks back! She was very supportive when I announced this at her boss' party. Due to both of our busy schedules it took 6 months for us to both make it a date, but did we did...done did...did..whatever. Anywho, this was not our first stop, becuase there was another place closer to her house & she knew the owner. They were very helpful & pleasant & we picked out a pair of frames before we headed here (I like to check at least 2 places when making a big purchase - yeah, I'm one of those, but then I suspect you are as well or you wouldn't be here or even still reading what has turned into yet another one of my too long yelp reviews), however this is THE place to go. The selection is amazing, however the customer service is AMAZING! Offered drinks when we came in...ok, cool, I didn't want one, however I did listen in as she took Valerie's order & I do mean 'order' we both stopped when she asked what kind of soy milk she wanted...really? Yes, vanilla or chocolate. After a few minutes, she brought out a ball with a puzzle thing inside for Valerie's little girl to play with. Once she became bored with this, she decided she wanted to try on glasses & started doing so on her own. Now, her little girl is well behaved & wasn't violent with the frames (or anything else) but the staff didn't even bat an eye...at all. We were here on a Saturday afternoon around 2 along with several other customers, however we had plenty of attention & there must have been 4 or 5 people working there...at least. After a combined effort of Valerie & two staff members, who I really wish I had gotten their names, so I could mention them here (The girl who helped us the most did not wear glasses & had neck length high-lighted brown hair & the guy who helped us stood about 5'8" with dark rimmed round glasses) we narrowed it down to two pair - one everyday, albeit stylish, pair made out of plastic & metal & one sharp looking pair made out of metal. The one pair slipped when I looked down making the choice easy or at least I believed so until the guy offered to go make adjustments to them. A few minutes later he came back & my decision was now back to being 2x as hard. After hemming & hawing over them for some time, walking outside to see them in the sun & having debated on the various aspects of them it came down to something Valerie said "With the sharp looking pair, you'll always have to be dressed well. They won't go with sweats. The others will go with everything." I don't even own a pair of sweats. Yes, I have work out clothes, but no sweats. Let me repeat this...I don't own a pair of sweats! When asked if they would be fine at Departure as well as Lovejoy Bakers, Valerie said "Yes." and I take her opinion very seriously, if you haven't picked up on this by now. Let's talk price, because I stated I would in reference to the negative post which I read last fall for Blink. Cost for my 'reading' glasses or in my case 'computer' glasses ran me $750. The cost of the two frames were $333 & $469...yeah, I went with the $469 frames (the $750 is for the frames plus lenses with UV, scratch etc). You can probably lose & buy reading glasses for the remainder of your life at the five & dime for less, but these will be fitted for me including my pupil distance (PD), with truly optical quality lenses & they will look good; yeah, I'm willing to pay for that. Plus, the next time I need a new prescription I can simply use the frames again. Actually, I'll probably order the other pair as well when I go back to pick this pair up...well worth it. read more

Blink has vision. Most visits to the optometrist are dry, sterile and your main focus is getting out of there as soon as possible. Blink is colorful, lively and an absolute treat to visit. I actually brought friends with me with the promise that my trip to the eye doctor would be fun (a hard sell) and afterward they agreed. There are so many wonderful and unique frames to choose from, such lovely things to feast your eyes on while you're waiting and they have the friendliest staff in Portland. The eye doctor showed a genuine enthusiasm for his job, his staff and his business plus he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. So it's pretty and nice there. Who cares, right? For the first time since I started wearing contacts I was given a prescription and brand that actually feels right. Finally! I can wear my new contacts all day every day and not have dry, itchy eyes like I used to. Such a relief! The staff at Blink goes above and beyond the call of duty to make you feel comfortable and welcome and they do every little thing possible to make the whole experience as easy and painless as possible. Not only did they take care of all my insurance and rebate forms but they even put them in addressed stamped envelopes for me. I'm incredibly lazy so those things never would've happened without their help. Did I mention they sent me a handwritten thank you letter? I'm a sucker for those. I found the pricing to be fantastic considering everything Blink offers, I'd even go as far as saying it's competitive and beyond reasonable. All of their frames are completely unique and affordable, which is unfortunately rare in the eye world. If money were no object I would've easily walked out with ten new frames. So what more is there to say about Blink except GO!! read more

Found Blink here on yelp and went in for readers because I lost my $500 prescriptions. (They carry Amy Sacks.) The service and the selection was GREAT. Another hint - they knew I was worried about price, so for every pair I tried on they told me an "alternate", much lower, price than what was on the tag. I don't understand, but I would recommend asking the "real" price and not giving up when you see the tagged prices. If you are new to Portland, to not be intimidated by the trendiest and coolest places the way you might be in LA. Blink is the friendliest place in town. Afterward, walk down to the clinton neighborhood, it's so sweet and there are some cool restaurants. read more

I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid and I remember hating going to my optometrist because it was awkward and my optometrist had weird breath and he was so close to my face for the exam and my allergies made my eyes red and he always insinuated that I was stoned and I was like I'D RATHER JUST GO BLIND. Well, I've been going to Blink for about 4-5 years now and this place is about the farthest you can get from my previous optometry encounters. This h is the nicest, most friendly group of people, I truly look forward to going to my appointments. The docs are so kind, thorough, and very easy to talk to. The Blink crew will take the time to honesty help you pick the PERFECT frames, they have saved my eyes from some brutal pink eye (no, it was not from someone farting on my pillow), eye allergies, I've stopped in and they have adjusted and cleaned my glasses numerous times, AND they have the best beverage selection and nobody has weird breath!! I agree with the reviewer below. This place is awesome. First of all, the exam is very thorough. You won't feel rushed to answer to the question of "better one, better two?" My doctor, Anna Curttright - awesome! Personable, & knowledgable. Good doc and cool person, too. Staff also is ultra cool and pleasant. I'm usually an easy patient, but lately I've been in a slump (maybe the rain) and have been feeling a bit finicky. They never let their smiles down. Very cool staff. Place and vibe is cool, too. After looking at the reviews online, I was pretty impressed by how well received Blink was. Since I was in need of glasses, I figured I'd at least get an eye exam done and go from there. When I arrived, I think my hopes were a little inflated after reading other reviews. I expected some crazy selection of glasses (which they do have), but I guess I wasnt taken aback as others. I checked in for my appt, and the lady at the front desk was super nice. She asked if I wanted any coffee (pretty typical right?), but then added cappucino or mocha to the list! I think my jaw dropped instantly. How many places do you go offer such drinks for free? Anyways, I took a mocha and it was really good. Before my appt, the front desk lady continued to show me around and chat. Much better then the typical secretary who just sits behind the desk while the patient reads magazines. Then for my eye exam. Everything went very well, the doctor seemed much more thorough then my other optometrists. Not sure what else to say on that, but she was very good. Finally, since they didnt take my insurance, they filled out the paperwork to get me reimbursed through an alternative method. All I have to do is mail the paperwork in. Pretty nice deal. Overall, an amazing experience. Very friendly atmosphere! I would highly recommend this place to others. read more

I love Blink! Who would have thought an eye exam could be fun? I have seen both Dr. Armstrong and one other doctor there (sorry I don't remember her name...) and they were both knowledgeable, gentle with my sensitive eyeballs, and helped me a ton. They even explained the nuances of my prescription and why my eyes are the way they are - fascinating stuff. The rest of the staff is friendly as well, and put up with me trying on probably a hundred pairs of glasses before I finally picked one out. Their frame selection is expensive, but if that's a problem you could bring in frames from elsewhere - the fashionable, fun frames are one of my favorite things about Blink! They sell glasses in colors and patterns I've never seen before, and they complimented the glasses I already had as well. They understand that glasses are a fashion statement as well as a "medical device" and they seem to really enjoy helping you pick out a pair you love. I keep forgetting to write a review for these folks because I'm so used to being motivated to pen Yelp rants based on negative experiences. But I had a great experience with this place. I went there for two reasons: because my insurance paid for it, and because it has the same name as that great Madeline Stowe thriller from the 90's. Anyway, I got a pair of progressive lenses in this really sick (but really expensive) pair of designer frames. It was my first pair of eyeglasses ever, and I paid more than I thought I would--but they're really, REALLY good-looking, and people say they frame my face really well. My insurance paid for half, and my HSA paid for the other half. So they were basically free. I was used to wearing dime store readers, so the progressive lenses took me a few weeks to get used to. But much like operating a new stick shift, once I'd learned to drive my progressives, my life was changed for the better. The staff is young and hipster-ish, but they're unpretentious and engaging (if that makes sense). Long story somewhat shorter, I like this place. And I'm glad I wandered in based on the name--and I have no qualms about dropping a few dimes there. read more

I decided to come here after I read the reviews. I was not disappointed. I called and got in the same day. Amazing. They were all so helpful with looking at frames. After not long of a wait where I sipped on Iced tea my dr. Was ready. The exam was fast and comfortable. Got loads of info. On my eyes that I had no idea about. I'm very picky about frames and had a cheap pair I brought in as inspiration and didn't find any I liked, so they offered to put my lenses in my cheapies! can't say enough good things about this place and the awesome people that work there. read more

I almost did 4 stars on this one for the price of the glasses. Its not a shopping mall kind of store. So prices are steep. But what you get for that is a GREAT selection of glasses and very very friendly sales staff. Not only are they friendly but they seemed to have this amazing ability to match my face with glasses that looked good..... not so easy with my face.... Also when they are not all busy they will jump in and help your current sales preson and so now you have two people pulling out well chosen glasses to try. The glasses came in earlier than promised. Definitely lives up to it's amazing reviews! Absolutely loved this place. They take EyeMed (and were in network) so I got fitted for contact lenses, glasses and sunglasses and was there for over 3 hours. Becky and occasionally other sales associates were always helping me and giving me great feedback on all of their glasses. They have an amazing selection of glasses which is also nice. Becky had a great way of teaching me how to put my contacts in as well. I had previously gone to another place that had me sit down and look into a small mirror but Becky had me stand and look into a large lighted mirror which helped a lot. She also demonstrated by putting them on herself which was extremely helpful. Very very above and beyond service! The store itself was absolutely gorgeous as well. Not the place to go if you're looking for lower price range frames. Also the staff may be pleasent, but they kinda border on clingy/overly enthusiastic at times and it was enough to make me a really uncomfortable. If i am willing to spend 400$ on glasses i sure as hell want people to tell me if they look bad.. at one point I had a 2 sales floor people trying to sell me on a 480$ pair of 3D printed frames that made me look like the little kid from A Christmas Story. Fantastic experience. Best service that wife and I have ever had at both a eye exam and purchasing glasses and contacts. They filled out all rebate information and insurance documentation. It could not have been easier. This will be our new exam and glasses company for the future, even though we live 3 hours away. UPDATE- 10/18/2012: Glass started to crack so I took them back to Blink. They were great- said they would take them and make sure the glass gets replaced and send them back to me free of charge. I think Blink will me my eye doctor and glasses business of choice for now on. read more

Great selection of frames that you won't find anywhere else. Yeah it's expensive (to me anyway) the price point for most frames seems to hover around 500 dollars. The GF has made multiple purchases here, she always gets compliments about her glasses. read more

Very friendly staff will offer you coffee, tea, water and are always on time with appointments. The office is very nicely decorated and there are a ton of options for glasses. Eye exams are thorough but quick. Overall a great business. read more

I love this place. I even once had an argument with my boyfriend about who had the cooler optometrist -- he refused to believe that Blink was the place to go (he frequented Eyedentity up the street). Having been to both, I can say that Blink is the clear winner. Eyedentity was pretentious with snobby doctors and staff who seemed to be trying (and failing) to emulate Mad Men. I walked in in sweats and was snobbily turned away, saying that there was a month long waiting list. I nervously walked down the street to Blink (which looked even flashier from the outside) and they were able to fit me for a fitting the next day. Just taking a look around the shop, I realized that their choice of frames was far superior. The staff was incredibly nice, unpretentious, and extraordinarily helpful. Dr. Armstrong even took the time to explain to me that he went all the way to places like Japan and France to hand select some of the frames himself. They send you little handwritten thank you cards in the mail, address envelopes for your rebates, and give you your contact lens boxes in Chinese takeout boxes. Seriously. This place is thoughtful, efficient, and just generally wonderful. This is how businesses should be run. I'm taking a trip up to PDX the next time I need my prescription renewed just so I can go here again. read more
