Exam: Full eye and contact exam Pros: The experience was great! The doctor and staff was thorough with the exams, scheduling, services, and supplies. The place was very very clean and organized. From the outside it looks super small, but it's actually spacious! The equipment is up to date and I left feeling as if I did my eyes justice today! Kudos to the Eye Studio. Cons: Oh the one thing I didnt like was the constant messaging and reminder's once you've scheduled. If I dont make the appointment just charge me the $30 that you all have listed in the sign up process. Please please please do not blow my phone up with trxt, emails, or calls. The optometrist and the staff here were professional and thorough. However, the lack of communication and the way that my glasses order has been handled is really subpar and disappointing. Initially, at the time that I ordered my glasses I was told that it would take 2 weeks to arrive; no call as 2 weeks passed. I called to follow up and was informed the glasses would be in the following week. I called again and was informed that they had been back ordered until mid March. I understand that things happen and was expecting an update notification in some form. Nothing. I called again as mid March had passed and was told another week or so. No update again as those dates also passed. I called again and was told someone would be following up with the supplier and would be calling me back to give me an ETA and whether they had even shipped yet (they were not able to answer this for me when I spoke with them). I didn't receive a call back so I called the following week and didn't reach anyone so I left a message. I just received a call back today and was informed that the glasses that I ordered is now back ordered until May-could not give me an actual or ballpark estimate of what part of May. After some back and forth/some follow up on their end with their supplier, I was offered for the time being, the same pair of glasses but in a different color until the ones I ordered came in. I was told that they would be sent out the following day with arrival in store a couple of days later. From there, I was told my lenses would be cut and fit to those frames and I could come pick them up the end of the week. Well, it's now the following week. I have heard nothing and I am baffled as to why this has been so complicated/difficult to follow through/communicate. My original appointment/day I ordered my glasses was in January-it is now April. Had the communication been professional and had I received updates prior to having to repeatedly call I would have had a much better experience with this provider. As of now, I will consider other providers for future care and I am still waiting for glasses. I really urge them to improve their communicate and to ensure that staff does not communicate inaccurate information or make false promises. read more

My insurance changed this year and I'm looking for a new eye doc, preferably close to home in The Pearl. While passing by the other day I popped in here to check it out for hospitality and selection. What a disappointment. The person at the desk had a horrible, unwelcoming attitude and her "how can I help you" was more like "what do you want?" than an offer of help. It was so bad that my reply to her was, "I just wanted to check things out, can I do that?!" So it's extremely unlikely that I'll go back and even get to the point of making an eye exam appointment. Perhaps the doctors and facilities are great, and hey, we can all have bad days, but the customer service was so horrible I'm happy to drive to find better options and won't go here even though this store is only blocks from my home. read more

The doctors and staff are knowledgeable and friendly, as always. Since going during Covid, I find their protocols over the top. Dialing into a room to ask questions, not letting you try on glasses except in one location that was always busy, having to put used glasses in trays, which makes the inventory very low, making you wash your hands for twenty seconds, etc. Covid is a respiratory virus. Catching via surface contact was debunked months ago. The experience was off-putting and unnecessary. Treating adults like children is not enjoyable. read more

I have been going to the Eye Studio for several years, bought glasses, contacts, and multiple products, and I have always been treated well. However, today I realized after juggling activities and wrapping up a job, and preparing to start my new job on the 14th, I am without insurance. I called to postpone my appointment after my realization, feeling bad that it just dawned on me and was told I needed to pay $30, for a late cancellation fee. Now, I understand time is money and I was late to cancel but instead of understanding it felt as if I was being punished. I called back to explain that the $30 dollars seemed more important and I was told they waived a late cancellation in 2018. I paid the $30 and she canceled my appointment for the end of the month, fine with me finding a new eye doctor. I am very particular about who I let work with concerning my vision. As a child I had "lazy eye." They used to send home pamphlets every year at school for all the kids, our teachers would talk about it. Apparently in the 70's Lazy Eye was a plague that swept through children on a frequent basis. What happened was there something in the water? I never hear about "Lazy Eye" anymore? The standard method of treatment involved gross stuff you don't want to hear about, but let us understand that I am very aware of things around my eyes and am a bit particular about who I see about them. Dr. Tsai is one of the best optometrists I've worked with. She set me up with glasses that made me look sexier, slimmer, and increased my business by 20%. (Approx) She was able to field my rather in depth questions, she was respectful of my concerns and made good recommendations after really listening to me. Ive been going to this place for 4 years and even after I tried other establishments I always end up back here. Why? Service! Service! Service! Thats what sets this place apart. Not just service but excellent customer oriented service. I am quite a high maintenance client especially when it comes to my vision. I need to get things right and it takes an iterative process and lots of brainstorming and discussion and visits for things to be right and to my satisfaction. Rickey is the super star in my book. Very competent, engaging and patient, he works with me until I am completely happy with the end result and I am the first one to admin that I am not your typical laid back client. If you get 5 stars from me, you will pass pretty much anyone with flying colors. Excellent customer service is and should never be measured when things are going nice, easy and normal but when a challenging situation presents itself and is handled with the utmost competence, professionalism with a smile and a pinch of grace. This is how Rickey has performed throughout the years. Im sure he dreads that time of year that I make the appointment but he ends up passing my test all the time. Ive gone to other doctors before but I always end up getting my hardware done here. Is Rickey the main reason i go here, yes! But lately I've met some wonderful people like Andy (who I fell in love at first hello) and David and Dr Tsai who is also a wonderful doctor to work with. This place has now become like home! My only criticism in this place is that some (not all) of the women need to step up their game in terms of customer service. You can easily lose a customer like me if you don't have your A game. Maybe it doesn't matter but I thought id share that feedback. Businesses need to understand how important their client facing employees are. It doesnt matter how good your doctor is or how great the food is, if the initial impression is bad or mediocre, it sets the pace for what happens next. 5 stars is an understatement. If Le Bon Marché was an optometry office this would be it. The aesthetic is clean, artistic and luxurious. The service surpasses any other clinic I have ever been. Dr. Tsai & Dr. Lee are thorough, friendly, and make a point to create a warm welcoming environment. Not only do they have all of the latest technology, all the staff members have been trained to a tee to answer all your questions. The entire staff is incredibly knowledgeable and you would be in excellent hands with anyone who helped you. Reading through previous positive reviews about The Eye Studio prompted me to make an appointment and see Dr. Tsai. I moved to Portland about 3 years ago and would just go back to my old optometrist in California when I'd visit. He, too, was a Cal graduate...knowing that Dr. Tsai was a Cal alum, too, reflected well on her education and training as an optometrist. I've been to many eye doctors in my life, so I think I have good instincts when finding a good optometrist. I went in with a lot of skepticism since this was a new doctor...so, how did they do?? The staff was actually very friendly. I was warmly received when I entered and was offered a beverage while I filled out my forms. As soon as I was done, I was taken back to have some thorough testing done of my eyes with all their high tech equipment. After that was done, Dr. Tsai came out and introduced herself and escorted me to the eye exam room. She was able to explain my options for LASIK, why I was having headaches (my old prescription was too strong - so much for my California eye doctor), and things to be aware of since I have astigmatism. Sure, these are typical of an eye exam, but she was very thorough and didn't rush me at all. Great, great service by an optometrist -- I've been to eye doctors since I was 7 years old. Trust me, I know a good eye doctor when I see one. The other fun part of my visit was looking for new frames. Talk about 1-on-1 time!! I was given so much attention to find frames I like (and I'm pretty picky). I normally get new frames every 2 years so I like to have change. Their selection was not super extensive, but it was still very good. (I will say though that if their selection was a little larger, I would have given 5-stars.) And their prices are not exorbitant - the ones I FINALLY settled on were 25% off and also on clearance, so I got another 20% off!!! SCORE...loved them and can't wait to see them on. My contact lenses arrived 3 days after my appointment (speedy service, too). Oh, and btw, another big plus for me was that they accept VSP insurance. Bottom line: I no longer have a need to see my previous doctor in California now that I've found the right one here in my new home of Portland. I was blown away by how generous they were. And friendly. I've been to visage nearby, and on the whole they are fine, they are a little bit cold, but this place felt like a family run establishment. My husband's glasses had been loosened by a soccer ball to the face and they tightened it and cleaned it while I waited at no charge, they also let me walk off with last month's Portland Monthly magazine, and I got tea on a drizzly day. Bought a pair of glasses there 15 months ago and have had problems with them from the first day. I was in at least once a week for the first 6 weeks because I couldn't see clearly. Eventually they discovered the lenses were ground incorrectly and promptly replaced them at no charge. Next there were problems getting them to fit correctly. Everyone on the staff did their best to make them fit but after nearly a year of visits they still weren't right and they offered to replace them at no charge. I decided to give the adjustment one last try before replacing them because they were really trying to make it right... My mistake. Fast forward to now... still have the same problems but now they won't replace the glasses because it's been more than a year since I bought them. Ugh. Now I'm stuck with a pair of $1600 glasses that don't fit and never will. Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper. I must say the staff were always friendly and courteous even when I was a little cranky. The lead optician is highly skilled and a very nice guy. I worked with everyone in the office and he was the best by far. read more

I was referred to Dr. Tsai by a friend who has been seeing her for years. I had a routine eye exam and have to say she was very personable, as was the front store staff. The one person who did the measurements on my eyes I felt her friendliness was forced and not genuine. Other than that, the staff was great. The place itself is lovely, located in the Pearl. Very clean with a store set-up that's very modern yet easy to peruse the frames. The exam room itself was comfortable and the technology seemed pretty up-to-date. My one concern/comment was that Dr. Tsai found me to be slightly near-sighted (fine, I agree with that) but when I asked if it was related to my pregnancy, she said that it was unlikely. My OB, on the other hand, feels otherwise as there is a known near-sightedness that is related to pregnancy. Both are very knowledgeable and professional and I trust their expertise so I guess in the end, it's not unreasonable for docs to have different opinions. However, the more people I talk to and the more I read about pregnancy, near-sightedness is definitely an issue. I'm surprised she didn't acknowledge that. My husband felt like she was just trying to sell me glasses. I'll likely be looking for someone else to do my annual check-ups. read more

My husband and I have been with The Eye Studio for the last 2 years and have seen both Dr. Tsai and Dr. Kim. We have had nothing but excellent and professional care from them and their office staff. They are thorough with their examinations and their recommendations for eye care have been very beneficial. My husband purchased a new pair of glasses last year (his first new pair in 10 years!) and he loves them. When I was having trouble with my astigmatism lens, they got me into the clinic quickly to help me fix the problem. Their office is located in the Pearl District and I love their space, modern and comfortable, just like their selection of frames. One piece of advice: definitely book your annual appointment in advance (perhaps 2 months) to get the time that works with your schedule, especially if you're not able to get time off as in my case. :) read more

True Professionals. I don't have any serious need for glasses, but I come here to make sure my eyes are healthy and being thoroughly examined. Dr.Tsai and now Dr. Kim are both amazing. All the staff is super friendly and helpful. I have been going here at least five years and have never switched even though I don't live in the neighborhood anymore. Their frames are a little spendy, but you can always take your prescription to another eye glass seller if you want. I have been struggling with dry eye and am so happy to have such good care. For a while now I have been wondering why Comcast HD cable quality has gotten worse. I always knew they were a monopoly and just suffered through it. When bored one day I tried my dads glasses on and realized that I was blind and it was not the cable. I did not have insurance, so I went to a Binyons to just get a pair of glasses so I could watch the Blazer games in clarity. They were fine, just got my glasses and went. I eventually wanted to get contacts for a little more convenience. I play sports and the glasses do not always work. So I yelp searched in coordination with my newly acquired insurance and found The Eye Studio. They are conveniently close to my work, so I made an appointment. When I set up my appointment, I was on the phone for over 5 minutes and she was very helpful. She answered all my questions. I went to my appointment and was comfortable the whole time. Lindy my doctor answered all my questions before I was able to ask them. She taught me more about the eye then I ever knew. She found me the least expensive route to get contacts for my circumstances. It was great. I found my new eye doctor. read more

The Eye Studio was recommended to me by a co-worker - they are close to our office, and they took our insurance. My prescription was just about two years old, so I went in for a new pair. I saw Dr. Tina Tsia, and she was patient, professional, and my new was prescription was perfect. The glasses that I found there were hugely expensive (to me, I guess I don't know what glasses should cost), with out insurance I think that the cost of the exam, the glycoma tests, test where you look for the red dots on the computer screen, frames, lenses, and the anti-glare up sell would have been just over $800. With my insurance I paid about $350-$400. (Keep in mind, my eye insurance isn't very comprehensive.) My prescription was perfect, and my glasses are actually the kind of glasses that make people stop and stare a little bit, but I often have strangers compliment them. Eye Studio adjusted them a few weeks later for no charge, when I thought that they didn't fit my face correctly, and I was impressed when they remembered me. Even with the cost, I would recommend them, and will return to get another pair in a year or two. I figure that glasses are on your face, something that people see you in everyday, they should be something that you spend a little money on. read more

I had a great experience at the Eye Studio. I have had some problems with my eyes, and Dr Tsai was professional, thorough, and my eyes feel so much better! They seem to have really high tech equipment-they took a photo of my eyes, which I have never had done before. It shows the surface of your eyes, and whether you are a good candidate for a new type of lenses that help with night vision. I'm not a big fan of any kind of doctors out there, but I actually am excited to go back here (in a year). I know, weird, right? Dr. Thomas and the staff out front are so awesome and friendly that I honestly felt at home and super comfortable. Dr. Thomas talked to me throughout the entire exam so I was never lost about what she was doing. What I especially enjoyed was after she put the drops in for the dilation, she let me look at the frames in the front of the store instead of sitting in the exam room for several minutes alone. During that time, I picked out my frames, chose my lens options, got measured and paid my bill. What I like is that I went in for a specific purpose: check-up and prescription sunglasses. Excellent service, great selection of good looking frames. I've been stabbed in the eye and am somewhat sensitive with things coming at me, and Dr. Tsai took care of me without freaking me out. I did learn that if there aren't prices posted, I still need to ask - but I was so happy with the glasses I ended up with that I sent my wife there and paid the premium again.
