I have purchased glasses at the Reynolds Optical on Sandy Boulevard for years, always with great success. They have since closed the Sandy Boulevard location and moved their business to NE Broadway (also in Portland) although I don't see that address here on the yelp app. In January, I purchased a brand new frame for my new prescription (which is a progressive lens,and has been for years)... when I picked up my glasses,Mark adjusted them for me. The next day. I went to have them readjusted because they didn't seem to be staying up on my nose . He warmed the temples up and did the best he could to make them comfortable on me....two days later I went in because they still weren't staying up on my nose. He suggested I get grips to put on the nose area to keep them from slipping down. I asked if they carried them at the store....He said no he purchased some for his own glasses on Amazon.I told him I didn't shop on Amazon. He said I could cut a Band-Aid and fit that on The nose grip area of the glasses!!!! Excuse me!?!!....I paid $450 for these glasses, I'm not about to cut a Band-Aid so that they don't fall down my nose. I just went back today and the door is locked. there is a note on the door that says they're in the back working, to either knock or call this phone number,which I did ....The phone rang until it stopped ringing with no opportunity to leave a message! to say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Truly strange. The manager/clerk greeted me and my daughter, and asked if he could help us find anything. He answered my questions about interfacing with my insurer helpfully and completely, and suggested that if I needed an eye exam, I head to the store's Hawthorne St. branch. After listening to his presentation, I decided to go to the other branch and set up an exam. I thanked the employee as we walked out. As we reached the car, my daughter said "What was THAT about?" and mimed the employee's reaction--which I had not seen--as we walked out. It was kind of a sneer, or a "WTF?!?" reaction, but to what, I had no idea. I was really puzzled. These days, I believe we gravitate towards local businesses out of some emotional need: To support our neighbors, to interact with people face-to-face, to feel a tiny bit more invested in our communities. Now the emotional part of this tiny interaction was gone, and I didn't understand why. I thought of going back and asking, but that seemed pointless, so I went to Warby Parker instead. read more

Over a year ago, my wife got her glasses from Reynolds and she was happy. I was with her on a trip in and found a pair of frames I liked, on sale. So I scheduled an eye exam and ordered my progressive lenses, both of which were significantly less expensive than my first exam and pair of progressives from Foster Vision. I had been wearing my first pair for two years and liked them right away. They only took a day to get used to and really made life better for me. I should have stuck with what I knew to be good. The lenses from Reynolds were not right. I felt discombobulated, like everything was off kilter. I went in a couple times and was assured I would get used to them. I didn't. They made some adjustments, which helped but not much. They double checked my prescription with a second exam. No change. I wore them every day for three weeks straight and they still felt weird. Reynolds would no longer help me. He told me all progressives are made the same way and I would get used to them. I stopped wearing them altogether and stuck with my old glasses. In October, my optical insurance benefit renewed, so I went back to Foster Vision and had them install progressive lenses in the Reynolds frames. It took about two hours to adjust, then everything was fine. Two days later, the nosepiece on the Reynolds frames fell off. I hope it will hold with glue because now I finally have a second pair of glasses I like. Whatever happens, I won't be returning to Reynolds Optical. Like another review states, you get what you pay for. Lesson learned. read more

Cool designer frames, including many that Reynolds designs in-house. Great prices -- the Sandy location is the discount branch of the local Reynolds chain. Instead of having a sale rack at the other stores, they send the sale ones here. You'll pay $160 to $300 for frames and lenses, depending only on your prescription, whether they are progressive, what coatings you want. All frames are the same price. Besides the price, I have to commend this place for the great service. The clerk was utterly attentive and opinionated -- she told me exactly what she thought of each pair I tried on, and why it worked or didn't work for me. And she pulled out ones she thought I should try. Her style was such a wonderful change from the "it's all good" smiling attitude of too many retail people who think they are being helpful by not expressing any opinion! read more

Yes, their prices are cheap, but you certainly get what you pay for. The frames are fine, but the lenses are garbage. Got some new lenses with anti-reflective coating (basically the only option they have) and they were scratched in about a week. After arguing with them for a few days they agreed to replace them, but told me that (1) they don't offer a scratch resistant coating and (2) the anti-reflective coating actually makes them more susceptible to scratching, so if I didn't want them to keep getting scratched (from cleaning them with the cloth they supplied) I should not get the AR coating. Who doesn't get the AR coating? The lenses lasted about a year and when I got new ones (from rose city eyecare) I was told that yes, the old type of antireflective coatings were easier to scratch, but that no one uses those anymore. My Ophthalmologist recommended going to Reynold's on Sandy to find a good selection of cool frames for my new glasses. There is a huge selection and I found a beautiful red color and style, which I love. The service was smooth and communication clear as I told exactly what I wanted, so I had not thought it necessary to get a receipt. However, soon after I wore my new glasses, I realized they were not tinting, as I had requested. Upon calling, I found out there had been a mistake when the order was written. How happy I was to have this corrected with no charge. My new glasses are adjusted to wear comfortably, the quality is excellent and the lenses clean easily just using a tissue...no scratches. Excellent customer service. I visited Reynolds because one of the screws fell out of my glasses and it came apart. It was so small a screw I couldn't replace it on my own. The store employee helped me with that and tightened both screws. She was friendly and helpful and it was real plus since I live right down the street from them. Heather is by far the best eyewear professional in the entire city of Portland. I have serious vision needs (-10 in left eye/-8 in the right with an astigmatism and bifocals) and I am not a large person so fitting all of that into a frame that works is real challenge. Heather not only takes the time, she is honest about her opinions, gives helpful suggestions -- and she knows from a technical point of view what will work - and what doesn't. I really wanted to be happy with this local shop. I've purchased glasses here more than once. The first time we had a problem I chalked it up to miscommunication. But when my new lenses turned out to be, literally, worse than none at all (they are bifocals with no usable reading range) they refused to even consider the possibility they had made an error. How is this place still even in business? It's been about 5 or 6 months since I got new lenses made here. My lenses have developed tiny spots all over and a layer is peeling off ! Cheaper than most, (not all, lenscrafters is cheaper and walmart might be cheaper than this place ), does not mean my lenses should start deteriorating within six months! I didn't get their free frames ( looked real weak ) and used my own frame, so wasn't even that cheap for me. My previous review was about their atrocious customer service: Worst experience I have had, getting a pair of lenses made and I have been wearing prescription glasses for 40 years. The manager kept messing up my order and tried to fault me for her incompetency! Among a slew of mistakes ( getting my phone no wrong, tint was the wrong color and way too dark ), she also gave false information to cover up for the fact that the color of the tint that I left a sample lens with her, was totally different than what was on the lens that they made ( My sample was brown; the lens that was made was blue-green). When I compared the tint of my sample lens to the one they made in front of her, she kept insisting that the color of tints change when you bleach the lenses. The truth is that the tint gets lighter but the color does not change, from brown to greenish blue, in my case. Anyone can make mistakes. If she had just been brave enough to own up to her mistake, apologized and redone my order, it would have been fine for me, even after such a long wait. Forget about the customer service mantra, " the customer is always right". Instead, she was full of attitude and to make things even worse, she kept trying to put the blame on me. Ugh! After the fourth visit, waiting for more than a month, and going through horrible service, I got the correct lens. Unreal! When I went to pick up my glasses for the final time,not feeling comfortable dealing with her at all, I made sure that she was not working that day. The woman who was there that day ( can't remember her name ) gave me very good customer service; the polar opposite of the manager; People who can't own up to their responsibility and interact appropriately with others should not be working in customer service, let alone be a manager. I love this place! I've been getting my glasses here for about 6 years (maybe more?) and have always been happy with my purchase. Heather is awesome - she will tell you the truth about frames (ex: "nah, those frames make you look older") and doesn't go the route of so many other places I've bought glasses (ex: "I think they look great" no matter what frame I've got on). I recently had to go the bifocal route and their optician took the time to really explain the differences between bifocal and progressive lenses, as well as tell me why blue eyes are more sensitive to light (fun trivia!). The staff at the Hawthorne store was also very helpful (that's where the optician is). Their styles are varied and you can find some funky frames there. Plus at only $170 ($270 for progressives) for everything - frames, lenses, exam - it's an awesome deal. I've bought glasses at some of the big box stores and their customer service is nothing compared to Reynolds! read more

Ive never felt inclined to write a yelp review until now. I took an old vintage frame to Reynolds on Hawthorne, and they told me with confidence they could make the frame symmetrical (it had some bend it in) while putting in new lenses. The first time I got them back, I could tell right away the frames had not been adjusted. I let them know, and they nicely said they would redo it, and make sure to communicate the need to even out the frame. After getting them back a second time, i still felt dissatisfied. I took these frames to two other eyewear shops who specialize in working with vintage frames around town, asterix/hendrix and mcguire, and was told right away that the frames were not done well, and could indeed be much more symmetrical. They both suggest i ask for my money back. When I did ask for a refund, the manager made sure to make the customer seem wrong, and that my request was unreasonable. He said "no refunds" Both aterix and hendrix/mcguire said my expectations were reasonable. This was a really unpleasant experience. I will not come back to Reynolds, and will make sure to encourage others to not take any vintage frames here. Heather was incredibly kind and helpful, and would recommend her wholeheartedly, but this experience with the manager was quite awful. read more

I had to cancel 2nd pair of glasses because after car accident my eyes prescription keeps changing and owner on NE Sandy Blvd location refused to refund money for the 2nd pair I'd had to cancel. He refused to make any allowances for the fact that the Readers I got are now useless to me after 2 weeks, and can't afford to keep paying for new lenses. I need to have new eye specialist to make glasses because they will be held liable to make sure lense prescription is correct at their cost and will get car insurance company to pay costs of my changing eyes. I'm a fulltime student and don't have money to waste and need Reynolds Optical owner to be a human being with a conscience, but I guess that's too much to ask?! So, now Reynold's Optical has $450 of my money they refuse to return, I have 1 pair of useless readers from them, and no desire to work with business owners who don't make any allowances for people with medical eye issues that aren't their cause. Bad experience at this company. Purchased a pair of glasses for $200 18 months ago (sizable purchase for my income), and I went to have the lenses replaced when I got a new prescription. They would not replace the lenses. All they would do is sell me a new pair of glasses for the same amount of $200. The frames were still a stocked item. I have checked since with other eye wear companies that give good warranties. Certainly check their service back up before buying. Never going back there! read more
