Usually I don't mind going well out of my way for this place but most recently I did and I regret it. Usually the food is pretty good. But this time it wasn't. Service was also not that great. Got the nachos and lettuce leaf tacos which were fine. I didn't remember both beans and jackfruit being $2 more, didn't get either. For mains we got the mushroom bordelaise, daring mandarin salad, pesto pasta and tomato risotto. The mushroom was good but on the sweeter side. The mandarin salad was ok but the daring chicken lasted like rotting orange peel. Not good at all. Pesto pasta was ok but tasted underseasoned. Risotto was a joke. Do not get this. Parking: My stress levels went down with ample parking. They have their own parking lot and valet (I was unsure if every car must be valet if they are self parked in their parking lot though...) so we parked in a metered spot on the street. There's free parking across the street in the large lot if you don't want to risk paying for parking. Why I came here: The restaurant was voted as one of the top 10 restaurants in LA. It's very difficult for me to want to drive to or spend any time in the valley but because of the restaurant's vegan values and the ease of making reservations, it was worth driving out of the way. Since Juliano closed his restaurant, I've been on the hunt for my next favorite vegan spot. Service: super friendly, helpful and fast. Bathrooms: spacious and clean. Food: they have a large selection of food, there's something for everyone. There is a large wine and alcohol list! Come between 3-6 on weekdays for happy hour. For lunch, we ordered a sweet kale smoothie, and a cacao smoothie. Yum. Both are creamy and filling. They are served in huge glasses and are a meal itself. For appetizers, we ordered jicama nachos as well as regular corn nachos. Both are delicious. I had pot pie wrapped in a gf crust, and the amazing French Onion soup for a side. My husband had lentil soup and Mac and Cheese. All came piping hot and fresh. With several dishes, you can order a mini version so you can experiment with more. That's what we did. We were stuffed in a good way, feeling healthy and clean. What an excellent way to start the new year! We will return to the valley just to come here next time. The patio is spacious and gorgeous and the indoor dining experience feels more like visiting an old friend rather than going to a restaurant. It's clean, thoughtful, and just a pleasure to dine at. Look no further because this is probably the best vegan spot I've ever been to in my life, and I'm FROM Los Angeles, which I've come to understand is a Mecca of vegan food. So flavorful with a fantastic cashew "cheese" sauce. Would order this one again and again. + Lasagna came with a side salad- I opted for kale, dressing on the side. Although it came with a container of dressing on the side, the kale was already dressed and massaged- way too soggy for my tastes. + Since I wasn't sure how big the kale side would be, I also ordered a side Caesar salad. The dressing was good, but the salad, meh. Greens were past their prime, turning a bit brown. Maybe I got the wrong order because it came with diced tomatoes, croutons, and pumpkin seeds- unusual for Caesar, no? Yes. The food is as good as Instagram makes it look. Buffalo cauliflower was tasty, not overly buffalo, the kind that makes you choke. And the ranch was super creamy. Love that they offer non-alcoholic versions of their cocktails. The Uncharged Amethyst was the perfect sweet and tangy lemonade. For any mac lovers that are gluten free, your new fave lives here. I would say almost everything we ordered was worth recommending and ordering again, except the BLT sandwich with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. It was okay and was easily gobbled up, but it wasn't something I would crave to order again. However the Lettuce Tacos, Pesto Pizza, Mac N Cheese and Almond Butter Cheesecake I would definitely order again. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere here. The eclectic décor and natural sunlight coming in through the large windows created a really comforting and calm experience. And of course last, but certainly not least, the service. So happy we found this awesome vegan restaurant! We got takeout from them two nights in a row while visiting LA. The sweet kale shake and strawberry superfood shakes were awesome! Kids loved the sun dynamite sushi and daring taco plate. Salads were fresh and delicious. I especially liked the massaged kale side. The vegetable gyozas and daring pot pie were awesome! Hubby liked the mushroom and bbq jackfruit tacos. Don't miss out on the key like pie or the strawberry cheesecake. We tried a few things with tempeh and just aren't a big fan of tempeh so will probably avoid those in the future. Aside from that, We can't wait to stop in again when we are back in town. Yes, there is a reason why SunCafe Organic has such a great rating. Let me start off by saying that the restaurant is beautiful. There is seating both inside and outside but regardless of where you sit, you will love the atmosphere. Furthermore, the service is amazing! Our server was very kind and helpful. Now for the food: our table ordered the avocado toast, lettuce leaf tacos, mac n cheese, an omelette, and a sandwich (I forgot what it was called sorry). The avocado toast was amazing! I couldn't stop eating it. Both the flavor and texture were on par, it is truly as good as it looks. The lettuce leaf tacos were also very good. I wasn't expecting much from them but they were extremely appetizing. I would definitely order them again. The mac n cheese was also tasty; not the best vegan mac I've tried but certainly not the worst. I tried the omelette and it was interesting. Obviously it's not real egg but the taste perplexed me. It wasn't bad but I would not order it again. I didn't get the chance to try the sandwich but my brother said that he liked it. However, I did get to try the bowl of mashed potatoes that came with the sandwich and it was AMAZING - I strongly recommend. The fried potatoes were also very good. I became a vegan recently for health reasons so I suggested this place for a early dinner with my friends CB and LR. They had never tried a vegan restaurant before so they were excited for the experience. I appreciate that SunCafe has their own parking lot so parking was a breeze. They offer a lot of cute outdoor seating and I think some indoor seating as well. We sat outside. We got the following: -- Coffee Shake: Blue bottled blend coffee beans, cold brewed coffee, cashews, dates, cacao, vanilla - Both CB and LR got this and they loved it. The shakes had a very strong coffee aroma so I probably wouldn't recommend getting it at night if you are sensitive to caffeine. -- Apple Carrot Juice: apple, carrot - Refreshing and delicious. -- Mini Mac: 1/2 size Mac & Cheese (Quinoa pasta with tomato and cashew mac sauce baked in a cast iron skillet) - Both CB and LR got this off the Happy Hour menu and they loved it. It looked really good but because of the cashew sauce (and because I'm currently on a raw vegan diet) I couldn't try any :( -- Lettuce Leaf Tacos: sunchorizo, cashew cheese, pico de gallo, avocado, and basil ranch - I got this without the cashew cheese since I'm allergic to nuts. They were pretty good but not great, probably because I miss having non-vegan tacos and am not the biggest fan of lettuce. They were good for what they are, but not good for what they are substituting (in my mind). -- Apple Pie Skillet: apple puree and slices in gluten free crust with a crunchy oat crumble on top with vanilla coconut ice cream - This was one of the few desserts I could get since it doesn't involve nuts. CB and I shared it and we both loved it. She especially loved the crunchy oat crumble that was on top. Definitely recommend this dessert! I need to acknowledge something that happened here. My friend and I came here for a meal. And had a good time at first. The food was good until... there was something not right about the salad which had come out a little bit later. The salad was late instead of coming with the food or before. So it arrived after. We dug into the salad and something wasn't right about it immediately. It just didn't taste right. The dressing didn't taste like it normally tasted. Tasted like rotten bananas or something. Sweet and weird. When the server came back, I let him know something wasn't right or tasting right with the salad and just wanted to go ahead and send it back. Instead of saying sorry about that or asking what wasn't tasting right so he could check or let the kitchen know, he said that's the way it's supposed to taste. We just made that fresh for you. And he was immediately angry. No professional cover at all, just angry and like, no I'm pretty sure that's a good salad and that's the way it's supposed to taste. Didn't even mention up until that point that the salad was also really late for some reason, because if it had tasted like their salad normally tastes we would have just eaten it. But it genuinely tasted like there was something rotten in it. So thought it'd be important to let them know. Had been going there for years, getting salad all the time. Also we have both been in service jobs before, so there wouldn't be just sending something back lightly. Was every dish the favorite dish. No. Some were better than others. And some were favorites. But nothing had ever been so off or something wasn't so right that it needed to be sent back. Something wasn't right with or in that salad. He took it back still seemingly angry and offered dessert. We should have declined and just left at that point, but it was like well, this hasn't been a thing before so yeah we'll have dessert and finish enjoying our We ordered dessert including some cupcakes. When we were eating the dessert the server came out with this weird look on his face, like angry and said, hope you enjoyed that dessert, we made it especially for you, with an angry look on his face. And that's when it became clear something had happened to or been done to the dessert he served us. And he wanted us to know it. He was not saying especially for you in a nice way. What did he mean, we made them especially for you? He also did stand there smirking at us when he made the comment with an angry stare. It just so wasn't okay. Even being angry toward the customers in that way just so took away from the normally enjoyable experience of being there. we had never sent food back either, but hopefully the owners and managers would have wanted him to handle it differently. Sure there are people who send food back for no reason. Or eat the whole thing and ask for money back and that kind of thing (actually because we've had service jobs we've seen that happen.) But that was not the case. At some point you have to be great with the customers and trust them. The salad was inedible which was unusual for that place so we wanted to let them know. and let them know after the first couple bites that something really really wasn't right with it. At that point just wanted to get out of there and and also had somewhere to be after dinner, so we paid the check and left. Had some really good meals there. And usually the servers were laid back and nice. Hopefully that one server's attitude doesn't reflect the whole culture there. And hopefully this behavior wouldn't be okay today. So sad and so upsetting because Loved the atmosphere and loved going there until this point. We had never experienced that kind of thing with a server before. But nothing should ever be done to anyone's food, or even implied something was done. And the server should have had a more professional response to the whole situation. It affected wanting to go back and order there. And didn't occur to us to ask for a manager or anything, cause just don't really think like that. And trusted our server to take care of it. This place prides itself on fresh tasty food, so wanting to know that something is really off in the salad just seemed reasonable. It's really skimpy because it's 80% lettuce mixed with the other ingredients that make the dressing: a few tablespoons of their chorizo, bananas, raisins and a few other things. This is an absolute hidden gem! I'm not vegan but I cannot stop thinking about the breakfast we had here. There was a parking lot which is always a bonus - and walking up to the restaurant, there is a lovely patio area with a wishing tree - make sure to take one of the leaf or butterfly post-its and write your wish down to place on the tree. They have an indoor area as well. The service was great and the food was even better! I had the tempeh bacon benedict - the sauce was absolutely divine! It came with some home potatoes which were delicious as well. We also ordered the gluten free waffle which was light and yummy with the fresh berries. Our friend ordered the french toast with apples and wow did that look amazing. He also ordered a breakfast burrito to go and told me later that it was fantastic. It always enrages me when something as basic as an avocado toast is bland: remember lemon and cilantro are your friends! Charm. It's a trait I admit to falling for, often. I tend to be swayed by its sweet lovin' and then BAM! It bites me in the ass. What does this have to do with SunCafe? This vegan/raw food establishment has been a Valley staple for quite some time and in the last few years moved into a new storefront and revamped its branding. What did it gain? Say it with me, folks: charm! So does SunCafe hold up or is it like a sociopath waiting to strike? SunCafe is located on the top gun Ventura Blvd between the Vineland/Ventura and Lankershim/Ventura intersections. Being slightly further back from the busy hoopla of the boulevard allows SunCafe to instantly exude a friendly, warm, and homey feel and is relaxing and, well, charming! Upon walking up to SunCafe, patrons are swept away by a large front deck that is both spacious and calming mixing the vibes of a spa and someone's landscaped garden/yard. Enter SunCafe and you will be blown away by the adorable spot! With hardwood floors, cushions, and crown mold-paneling features; SunCafe is a bit rustic meets French cafe meets Pier-One. It is simply perfect in that it knows how to combine casual with the special essence of a perfect date spot. Ooh la la, SunCafe! With various dining options available (tables, booths, and a bar); we were promptly seated and glanced at the menu of vegan/veggie/raw goodies. Granted, the menu isn't too extensive in terms of volume. However, the selection is, being that it covers various ethnic styles so one can grab a Mexican-inspired dish while the dining partner selects something Italian-based. Everyone is happy! Various beverages (Kombucha, tea, shakes, juices, etc) are also up for grabs. For our meals I ordered the Raw & Rich Zuchinni Lasagna (zuchinni slices layered with walnut pest, spinach, cashew ricotta, vegan chorizo, marinara, and cashew cheese w/ side salad -- $15) and an Iced Green Tea ($4) while my friend ordered the Double-Stuffed Spicy Quesadilla (crimini mushrooms, smoky chipotle cheese sauce, pico de gallo, jalapenos, and cilantro on wheat tortilla -- $ 14) with a Blueberry Kombucha ($6). Goodness, the food was amazing! To begin, I am a tea connoisseur and green tea aficionado and I can safely say that this iced green tea was excellent and one of the best green teas I've had! And I am telling you: I've had a lot! My friend's Kombucha was equally amazing (although tasted like raspberry versus blueberry, to me) and I'm generally not a Kombucha fan (I'm picky with it). I knew, based on the beverages alone, that the food would be great and I was not disappointed. My Zuchinni Lasagna was too die for! So refreshing, crisp, and invigorating but with mind-blowing flavors and a lovely bite. It was pure heaven on a plate. Even the side salad, which was simply spring mix with balsamic, was a perfect compliment because it was dressed perfectly (not too little or too much). This was a dish prepared by angels! The Spicy Quesadilla was also delicious with a smoky appeal, not soggy, and was filled with ingredients (no skimping here). The only issue was that it is mostly pico de gallo. We assumed the main ingredient would be mushrooms per the menu and it was heavy on the pico de gallo and my friend isn't a tomato fan. Someone of lesser caliber would have returned it to order something else but he took one for the team as he said it was still tasty. The wonderful thing about SunCafe is that it is one of those places you feel good after eating it. You aren't weighed down by grease or feeling like you failed a diet. That's the type of meal we all deserve! Service here was also prime-time: friendly, efficient, and made us feel very welcome. No issues here. I have to note, ladies, that the bathroom here is lovely! It IS gender-neutral so you will encounter a urinal across from the toilet stool but the actual bathroom follows the beauty of the restaurant. Clearly the interior decorator of this place was grade-A. Overall, SunCafe is absolutely stunning: lovely decorations and ambiance, terrific plates, and wonderful customer service. It's definitely a spot to frequent and put on your 'favorites' list whether you are a veggie-eater or not. So don't worry, SunCafe won't attract you with its charm and then dump your ass.
