Surprisingly good Szechuan-based Chinese. Seats at most, a dozen and does a carryout business. We had carry out, found the food to be great, and it wasn't expensive. We expected less and got more. Good parking, friendly staff, a good variety of food, some vegetarian, some meat/chicken/fish. It's not fancy, with counter-only service. We found their phone off the hook, but when we showed up, service was reasonably fast and we liked the food. They have a variety of fridge-based cold drinks. I wanted to sit down and eat here, and I did. Be forewarned that there are not very many tables as most of their business is carry out. I had the Sweet & Sour Chicken. It was very good. My only complaint would be that there is too much rice and not enough vegetables. I liked the veggies that were served, large chunks that were cooked, but not mushy. There was a lot of chicken and rice, enough to take home and finish the next day. Ambiance--so, so. But this is a carry out place. We needed to get a quick dinner that was not fast food while we were on the road and spotted this Chinese place next to Starbucks. It looks like they used to offer dine in but has shifted to take out only after Covid. However, when we asked if we could sit down and eat, the owner let us move the table and chairs, which we truly appreciate. We ordered shrimp w vegetables, orange chicken and yakisoba. The rice was bland. The egg rolls were...the sweet n sour sauce was delightful. The schezwan beef tasted like fish and had no heat. There is nothing worse than chewing beef but the flavor profile... of fish. The Kung Pao Triple Delight, no heat, peanuts were the delightful. This was a nice little take out place. Theres maybe 3 tables in the store but dont dine in, it's just not that kind of a place. The lady at the front was really friendly and helpful, when I asked whats recommended, she asked a series of questions to cater the best answer for me. I got the chicken fries rice and hunan chicken. Chicken fried rice was good with carrots, peas, and eggs. An order of a dish like hunan chicken comes with rice but because I ordered fried rice she filled the whole hunan chicken box with the dish which was really nice of her. The dish it self was ok, the baby corn actually tasted really old so I just picked all that out. Easily the best takeout in the area around the highway. And yes I know that isn't saying much. In a vacuum; I should be rating this five stars. Seriously, all other options in this area are dreadful. A handful of fast food places understaffed by people that could give any cares about quality of the food or the service. Welcome to the oilfield. Quality. Their food is delicious and fresh compared to a lot of similar places in Midland. I find that a lot of other places over bread their fried dishes, but SunWok is not like that at all. Their General Tso's and Hot and Spicy chicken(not that spicy) were perfect! I asked for more spicy and they were happy to accommodate. Their egg rolls are easily they best I've ever had. Although the lack of decor makes it seem like a cold place to dine in, the staff is super friendly. I've always taken everything to go and it's always packed with care and travels well. read more

I'm pretty picky when it comes to Chinese food places. But this place is really good. My go to is the broccoli & beef with lo mein and fried rice.. both egg rolls and spring rolls are pretty good. I also tried the sesame chicken. Not the best that I've had but it's no too bad either. My coworker got the hot and spicy chicken. She said it had more of a sweet flavor to it. So, here's the thing. Chinese food in the Basin is hit or miss, and most "hits" don't really hit that hard. Your choices are usually limited to buffets serving luke-warm Americanized versions of Asian classics (and slices of frozen pepperoni pizza for...I guess...reasons?), and everything is kind of the same. Recently, however, there has been a boom in new family owned restaurants from across the eastern hemisphere popping up in Midland and Odessa. They range from higher end "sit down with a date" restaurants to simple strip mall store fronts cranking out take -out containers full of deliciousness. Such a place is Sun-Wok. Sun-Wok occupies the former home of a Dominoes Pizza servicing south Midland. Although there are a few tables out front, their bread and butter is carry out. Everything comes out hot and delicious and it has the texture and consistency of "made to order." Except the rice. Made to order rice would be ridiculous and make for a really stupid business model. The fried rice, maybe so, but steamed rice? They'd never be able to get food out the door. ON my most recent visit, I got the General Tso's Chicken. Probably not an authentic Chinese dish, but it was a delightful one (flavor trumps traditional accuracy in my opinion.) The chicken had a light breading, probably cornstarch, that was amazingly crispy even under the semi-sweet and slightly spicy sauce. I had mine served with fried rice, which was really handy in sopping up my leftover sauce afterwards. My only problem? The menu is FREAKING HUGE! There are...I kid you not...100 items on the menu! True, many, if not most, are versions of the same preparations featuring different proteins, (there is Hunan Beef, Hunan Chicken and Hunan Shrimp, for example) but it's still a lot to parse through. And the menu is not very forthcoming when it comes to the details of the preparations. In the Poultry section of the menu there are 20 different dishes available, each represented by a name and a price, with 10 dishes sporting a little symbol to indicate a hot and spicy dish. But there's no indication of what else is included. I know from past experience that some come served with a vegetable medley which includes broccoli while others are served with shredded carrots and assorted other veggies. Some descriptions (Or photos) would be, like, REALLY helpful. (As an aside, the lady who took my order, a very pleasant young woman who's name I don't know, was quite helpful, showing me photos on her I-Pad. I could have gone through those for a while, but there were other people trying to order after me, and, well, it ain't always about me.) (As a second aside, the spicy dishes aren't all that spicy, but they'll crank it up upon request.) So, to sum up, friendly staff, delicious food, large portions. Make the menu a bit more user friendly and you may get that fifth star. read more
