I was very happy with my dinner at Sun Cuisines. It's such a low-key and relaxing atmosphere with delicious and authentic food! Sun specializes in Burmese dishes, but they also have some great Thai options. I had trouble narrowing down my choices because everything on that extensive menu sounded really good! My friends and I split the following items: -Fish Rangoons: Salmon & Cream Cheese fried egg rolls- absolutely delicious and unlike anything I've seen on any other menu. I would definitely recommend ordering these as an appetizer! -Chicken Dumplings: My least favorite dish we ordered. The taste was just a tad off for me. I wouldn't order these again. I would replace the dumplings with the Burmese Ravioli appetizer next time. -Tunacado Sushi Roll: Made with black rice, avocado & seared tuna. It was fantastic! The black forbidden rice is such a nice touch that makes their sushi very memorable! -Tiger Sushi Roll: Also made with black rice. This one was also good, but I liked the Tunacado better! -Burmese Fried Rice with Chicken: Absolutely delicious! A lot of times, I feel nearly dehydrated after ordering fried rice because the restaurants WAY overdo it with the salt. That was not the case at Sun. The rice tasted light and fresh. I loved it! -Mango Black Rice Dessert: Who knew that Black Rice could also serve as a dessert? The black rice was served over a sweet, thick coconut sauce with sliced mango and strawberries. This is probably one of the worst Asian restaurants I've tried. First, when my husband and I walked into the restaurant, there wasn't anyone to greet or seat us. We said Hello to see if anyone would come out, but we ended up seating ourselves when one of the waiters finally came to our table. We ordered Pad Kee Mao and a Beef roll and both were AWFUL. The Pad Kee Mao noodles were overcooked and mushy with no real flavor. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao hot (spicy level) and it was more sweet than spicy. The Beef Sun roll had sweet potatoes, avocado, and mango. Again, it was AWFUL. It was very warm and too mushy. The beef was cut so think it tasted like burnt paper. On top of the bad service and bad food, the price was RIDICULOUS. The total came down to $27 just for the two really bad dishes. Never coming back here again. :/ read more

Went here for lunch on a whim because my husband wanted sushi. First I want to say our food was very good. When we walked in we were the only ones there, 2 parties sat promptly after us (not huge groups) and then I saw several people coming in to pick up orders while we were there. We waited nearly 30 minutes for half of our food to come out, we ate that and then waited another 30 minutes, we had to go to the counter and ask for the rest of our food to be boxed up to go because we were going to be late for an appointment. It was just one cook and server. And then we got the total of $96!!! I was in shock. There was no prices on their menu, which should have been a clue, but for 2 people I was not expecting to pay $96 we got 3 rolls and a nigiri plate, no alcohol although I did get a $5 tea and my husband got a ginger al. Overall the atmosphere was clean but the music they played made me want to go to sleep. Only go here if you are ok with the meal taking a while and be prepared their prices are steep. read more

I came here due to being very intrigued on the fact they use black rice for their sushi. I've never seen anything like it, and I really wanted to give it a go. I walked in, and was greeted by a very kind woman. I started with a Thai Iced Tea. This is one of the best I've had from anywhere. I thought it was pure, and authentic. I also asked for the soft shell crab as an appetizer. I found this to be delicious. The crab was crispy, and the accompanying cabbage salad with diced bell pepper and mango tossed in a fish sauce was great. I came here on the mission to try this sushi with black rice, and that's exactly what I ordered. I ordered a handful of nigiri and a special roll for good measure. Is the black rice unique? Absolutely, but does it work...I can't say it's for me. The rice itself is delicious but what lacks is the stickiness which would bond the slice of fish and rice together. I found every time I would pick up a piece of nigiri, the fish would slide off. I also found the amount of rice was a bit too much. As for the fish itself, it wasn't at its top optimum quality but it wasn't bad either. The salmon was the highlight for me, but I wasn't a fan of the seared beef or yellowtail. The roll I opted in for was the Salmon Special Roll. I found this to be very tasty and presented nicely. Finishing off with a fried banana dessert which was tasty and came with the option of green tea or red bean ice cream. I want to point out, the woman that greeted/served me was fantastic. She was very kind, very professional, and I have absolutely no complaints there. I did see their kitchen entrees which look great, and I would gladly return to give them a try. read more

There's a lot of excellent sushi places in WNY but I believe Sun Cuisines is the only one with black rice, which is heartier and healthier than white or even brown rice. I'm a big fan of their Philadelphia rolls. You have a choice between raw or grilled salmon (not smoked) or crab sticks with avocado and cream cheese. I recommend the raw salmon over the grilled. They have a variety of plum wines by the bottle, or you can get a 5 ox glass of Kobai plum wine. It's sweet with a hint of spice (not spice as in heat, just, well, spice.) They also have a lot of local beers. For example, they have my beloved Jelly Donut from New York Brew Pub. The space is very attractive and distinctive. I love the art on the walls. Service is excellent. One of these days I'll have to try one of their Burmese dishes. read more

We have enjoyed Sun on Niagara street for many years. However, I think we will not return anytime soon. First off when four of us entered there was such a strong smell of sewage; we should have turned around and left at that point. BTW we asked about the terrible smell and the manager said it was the neighboring business that had the issue... well, by the end of our meal there was then the strongest smell of Pine Sol that obviously was dumped to cover up the sewage smell. The issue was in Sun's basement. We all ordered drinks which came promptly. We ordered sushi rolls and our entrees, thinking the sushi would come out first as I should be. Wrong! Three entrees came out first and the heat was mixed up on two of the entrees . Back they went ... The server came out with the remade entrees and still no sushi rolls . I sat with nothing in front of me but soon after the sushi came out and my meal with it. The chicken in my Pad Thai was tough and overcooked. The seared tuna sushi was tasteless, very disappointing. The other 3 entrees were fine. The server was pleasant enough and none of the problems were her fault. Maybe Sun is under new management or a new chef, I don't know but I do know they better make improvements real quick especially in the basement. read more

I was told by several people that the menus at Sun Cuisine were different at their different locations. My boyfriend and I stopped into the Black Rock location for lunch last Saturday for just that reason. But once we were seated we were quite disappointed to notice the menu was exactly the same as the Williamsville location. That said, we had a good lunch. He ordered the spider roll & fried egg noodles and enjoyed both- though his entree was a bit spicier than he would have liked. I got the pad kee mao with tofu. The noodles were a bit overcooked and mushy, but the flavor of the dish was ok. We were in a bit of a hurry and hoped to order, eat, and pay in under and hour. Even though the restaurant was only 1/4 full it still took us about 75 minutes to have lunch. I think we'll stick to the Williamsville location in the future. read more

Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was decent. All the dishes we ordered had too much crushed peanuts. After we ate we noticed a cockroach climbing down the wall towards the table. I was read for this place to be super packed but it wasn't on a Friday night at about 630 pm. I'm suprised it isn't as I thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes that I got. My table ordered the burmese milk tea, avocado smoothie, chicken curry with paratha, samusa, beef curry, and rice noodles with chicken curry sauce. All was amazing. I thought that the beef curry was going to be a "standard" curry that is more "soupy" but it wasnt. There are pictures of almost every dish in the menu and that was super helpful in picking what I wanted to try. I never had burmese food before and loved it. The rice noodle dish came with a side dish that was sweet and savory at the same time. When I ordered the rice noode dish, the waitress told me that it would be served warm, not hot to ask if I minded. I didn't and when I got it, I thought it was still considered hot. I would recommend all the dishes I tried but I would definitely recommend not to skip the chiicken curry with paratha and the burmese milk tea. Got takeout from Sun yesterday - great value, outstanding food. The Tom Yum Goong was the best I've had locally, a bit unusual to me as it had cabbage in it. They did not skimp on the shrimp, and it was plenty hot. The spring rolls were gigantic; when we ordered online it appeared that each order was for 1 roll, but it was for two. No matter as they were outstanding, although we had the extras for lunch today. Vegetarian samosas were good. Coconut shrimp rolls were the only disappointment, as other reviewers have noted. My girlfriend loves coconut shrimp, but this was underwhelming. I'd never had the Pumpkin stew anywhere so we gave it a shot. Very unusual, and the sweetness of the pumpkin really worked with the spice. There wre big chunks of pumpkin in it, so good! Highly recommend! read more

Best 'ethnic' food in Buffalo, hands down. Sun is primarily a Burmese restaurant that also has a Thai-food menu. They absolutely excel in every way at both cuisines and I love coming here to dine in, getting take out and introducing others to the wonder that is Sun. I've never had a bad meal here, although if I'm to nitpick I have had a few shrimp that tasted a little strange once and the beef curry Burmese dish being just a little over-salty for my palate, but still very delicious. As far as what to order on the menu? Heck, I don't know. Be as adventurous as you heart desires that day. Pretty much all their menu items have accompanying pictures to them which makes choosing an item easier (although it's still pretty hard, considering their 40 or so menu items). I can't really tell you what to get, but I can tell you that the Eggplant dish is amazing, their Kyit Thar Aloo Hin (Burmese Chicken Masala type of dish) is incredible and economical (it was $10 when I last dined here) and they offer black wild rice with their dishes, which is incredibly healthy and awesome! Even with their low(er) prices, this makes for a great date night restaurant with a beautiful interior. Even though it may not be in the best considered neighborhood, the ambiance in there is wonderful and makes for a great night -- and now they serve wine as well! read more

This is an updated review - as you can see, I previously wrote a raving review. After the past year of consistent poor service, and most recently - what appears to be a reduction in quantity/quality in many of the appetizers... I finally decided to update my review. For at least a year now, every time we have gone to Sun, the service has been lacking. Often times we are left there sitting for long periods of time, and we've had to start flagging down random bus boys and other waitstaff around to get our waiter/waitress. Tonight was no exception - we even had to flag the bus boy down just to place an order. I've been giving them a lot of credit because I truly love their food, so I've been sucking it up regarding the lack of service in recent years. But tonight, I have found some serious disappointing downgrades in the food as well. Large order of tom yum soup - seems like they seriously downgraded the size of it. I had to ask if they got our order right because it looked like their small portion bowl. They confirmed it was their large - so ok, they reduced the quantity. Then there was the coconut shrimp... 2-3 years ago was when we last ordered them and they used to be these delicious giant shrimp. Well, no more. They are now these tiny shrimp, butterflied so that they appear bigger/wider than they really are. Then there's the chicken curry with paratha - I've actually always thought the portion was small to begin with but tonight it was even smaller! There's usually a few pieces of potatoes with the chicken but tonight there were none. And the sauce seemed extra watery - it used to be a thicker curry sauce, tonight it was more like a soup. Our entrees were ok. I got my usual spicy chicken and it seemed like there's a lot more rice than chicken tonight. Others ordered seafood dishes which were good. We may still come back from time to time, but likely not often, and will likely not be raving about it to everyone we know like we have in the past. Just so disappointing that they fell into the "we are popular so now we can start cutting corners" trap that so many good restaurants end up nowadays. read more

If you find yourself on this stretch of Thruway on your way to somewhere else, you would be wrong to ignore the really good restaurant in your midst. War of 1812 battles took place here in Black Rock. In its heyday, bars were common on most corners. European immigrants here worked hard and drank hard. This neighborhood eventually fell on very hard times but the latest influx of immigrants is shining a bright light on helping to get Black Rock back on track. Sun Restaurant serves up an exhaustive menu of Burmese cuisine and other popular Asian dishes. If you're expecting fast food Chinese, keep driving. Based on the number of restaurant reviews on Yelp, this may be the most popular restaurant in Buffalo. You won't go wrong trying anything on the menu but I'll make just one recommendation for dessert: southern Burmese black rice pudding. It's really a porridge that is typically served for breakfast and if this place were open for breakfast, I bet it would rival doughnuts and coffee in popularity. It's always dangerous to buy in to negative stereotypes of any neighborhood anywhere because you may miss a truly amazing experience. Ignore Sun Restaurant and it will surely be your loss, too. I congratulate the wonderful owners for planting a stake in one of the city's oldest and neglected neighborhoods. read more

If I could give this restaurant and cultural experience more stars I would in a heartbeat! I promote and tell people in the burbs and anywhere about this restaurant if they haven't had the experience yet. Its one of my favorites hands down. For my birthday this past year I could choose anywhere to go and of course I chose Sun Restaurant, even though I've been there before. I'm VERY passionate about the Black rice they use because of how it tastes (little sweeter) and all the positive health benefits. Let me just say black rice has more antioxidants than blueberries. I enjoy the texture and taste 10 times better than white or brown rice! My birthday feel on a Thursday, which was perfect because at Sun Restaurant on Thursdays is their Black rice sushi special ($5 rolls) and sake specials!! So of course we started off with a few black rice sushi roll. We ordered the crab, mango, and tuna rolls. OUTSTANDING!!! Then for my entree I ordered the Burmese curry pumpkin stew. Don't worry I'll post a picture of this work of art! The stew comes in a steamed green pumpkin! Its fresh and inside were smaller soft pieces of the pumpkin (like sweet potato), veggies (asparagus, onion, think mushroom), seafood (you can order other types of meat or vegetarian too), and a side of rice (paid $2 more for upgrade of black rice vs. white). The flavor was OUT OF THIS WORLD ..YUM! I couldn't finish it so they wrapped up my pumpkin and placed the stew in a separate container. My boyfriend Dan ordered the red curry chicken dish with a side of rice. That also was a winner and very tasty. For dessert we ordered the banana leaf with sticky rice w/ coconut milk in the middle. I've never tried anything like this before and trust me I didn't regret it! The service is exceptional, the interior is clean and remodeled. Because of experiencing black rice from here I buy it from Wegmans (could at Asian markets too) in the organic section. Lundenburg is the brand for less than $4 a bag (in a yellow bag). It was time for another excursion with mom - a break from the humdrum rehab at Elderwood on Grand Island. This is another great restaurant on the #40 bus line. The NFTA $1 fare saves $$$$$ over wheel chair van service. The #5 bus also services Sun. Wheel chair access is simply roll right in! The main floor is level with the parking lot door. There are no steps or ramps to deal with. Wonderful! Mom, sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We shared soup, avocado roll, and even red bean ice cream (free thanks to Yelp's check-in offer). Although mom was apprehensive with going out to eat at first, by the end of the meal she was beaming from ear-to-ear. Service was perfect and the price was very reasonable. All right, it pains me to do this, but I have to remove some stars from Sun. My friend and I came here for restaurant week and ordered their $20.18 special, which was chicken pad thai with a mango roll appetizer. The food was beyond reproach as usual, but the service was horrible. On to the gritty details. Our waiter was pleasant and quick to serve us at first, but I now believe this was because we were the only table in there at the time. Once it was busy enough to require a waiter AND waitress, we were ignored. Completely. They didn't even come take our plates and ask if we needed anything else. I was never given a refill and they were not around for me to ask for one. It took us (I timed this) 45 minutes before we could get someone's attention and ask for the check. It gets worse. I asked the moment we sat down if we could get separate checks. The waiter told us this was no problem, but since he was MIA when we asked for our severely delayed check, the waitress brought us only one. It took another 20 minutes to get her to print us separate checks and get them to our table. The restaurant was not busy at all at this point, I want to be clear on that. I still can't believe they were so inattentive. It wasn't just us, either. Other patrons were looking up from their unbussed tables wondering why they had no checks even though their food was gone. It's great that my friend and I had time to talk, but we waited over an hour. That's way too long. I probably won't be coming back to this location because of it. read more

I wanted to try their dessert but I didn't have room which is a great feeling . Burmese Food in Buffalo?! Burmese restaurant is a rare find even in Toronto which is a good ethnic mix. One time I asked a Burmese where his family goes for home food, he said no where they only can made those at home. Sun Restaurant definitely worth visiting if you want to have a taste of Burma. Though there are also Thai and Asian Fusion. We ended up sticking with Burmese dish and we shared: Catfish Chowder - Mont Hin Gar ($10) Tea Leaf Salad - Le Peth Thoat ($6) Beef Curry - Amare Thar Hin ($14) Thai Iced Tea ($3) All really tasty and though they looked like other Asian dish I had but the use of spices and herbs were a little different so the taste is also a little distinct. I ordered the Seafood Pad Thai and it was so good! There was quite a bit of seafood in the dish and so flavorful! My husband and I went here for our anniversary and couldn't have been happier! We wanted someplace reasonably priced with a wide array of interesting foods - we were not disappointed! We had a TON (don't judge) - the Fish Rangoon Roll (TO DIE FOR ), Steamed Dumplings, Tiger Sun Roll, Crispy Red Snapper, and Seafood Medley Pad Thai. It was easily the best Pad Thai I've ever had! Perhaps our family likes bold flavors, but all the dishes we ordered were under flavored/too mild for our taste. Black rice salad was "interesting", calamari was bit chewy and oily (squid was provably frozen and not fresh), spicy chicken and curry chicken were pretty watery. Would have loved more deep, rich curry flavor. Pad Thai was the only dish that we thought was good. We wanted to try Burmese food but I think we will go for Thai if we want more of southeast Asian flavor. read more

They have pretty much kept us alive during quarantine. I've been through the whole menu but I consistently get the mango black sticky rice for dessert. It's one of the most delicate, delicious, and simply fantastic desserts I've ever had. They have a huge variety on the menu ranging from Burmese to Thai to general Asian fusion. We have a vegan in our family and the menu is extremely friendly to anyone with dietary restrictions. The spring rolls are fresh and gigantic and although they are appetizer sized at most places it could easily be a great lunch. The prices are reasonable, especially for the quality of food you are receiving. This isn't just another takeout place. Something must be off with me and my taste buds if everyone is giving Sun Cuisines a 5 star. I'm only reviewing based on the dishes we ordered, the flat Burmese noodles, curry noodles, coconut shrimp and black rice salmon roll. Flat Burmese Noodles : my favorite dish of the night. I got it with beef and I had no complaints here. Curry Noodles: this was a miss. When we received our dish, it was warm, almost turning cold. The taste was interesting. We tasted sweet, salty and zesty flavors but the temperature of the food is what really made this unenjoyable. Coconut Shrimp: crispy fried chicken battered with coconut. The sauce they gave was unpleasant and overly sweet, as if you're dipping the shrimp into a sugary concoction, thus, ruining the flavor. Roll: this was very good. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed this roll because of the black rice and how the avocado and the cooked salmon mixed together. I have been here before and have had other dishes but I wanted to give it one last try. Maybe I ordered the wrong dishes? Who knows. But maybe I'll be back, but for now, probably not. After spending months in Buffalo hearing about this spot, we finally made it. Located about 15 minutes from downtown, it is a nice stand alone restaurant with large tables that can accommodate a large group. For appetizers we order the coconut chicken soup to share (size large feeds three people easily as an appetizer!) and a grilled shrimp black rice roll. Bother we're extremely flavorful and unlike foods I'd had before. For dinner we shared the Burmese chicken curry and a wide Burmese noodle dish. Again bother we're amazing with a balance of flavors and spices. Our waited warned us of the spice level on everything and was very attentive. Overall we had a positive experience here that I would recommend to anyone! If you haven't had Burmese food and are wondering if you would like, I would think about if you like Thai or Indian food. The food that we got here was pretty good. The pad Thai wasn't as sweet as other places I've had it, so that was a plus. The Burmese fried rice also was flavorful. However it was the service that was very very slow here. It must have been under staffed when we went because it took us almost 10 minutes to get seated with no line in front of us. Additionally, after we were seated, we had to wait again for around 15-20 minutes someone to come by to take our drink/food orders. Then, our waters didn't come out until maybe around 10-15 minutes after we placed our orders. The staff was super nice though. I had a Yelp offer on my phone for a free scoop of ice cream, but they ran out of ice cream that day. Our server let us try their black rice pudding instead and apologized for the inconvenience. I have had Sun both in house and delivery, each experience was worth it! The ambience is great inside and love the mango roll as a dessert sushi! Saw they had a new "black rice menu", and had to come try it out! Never mind the Buffalo Yelp Bucket List, number 60. We actually had two dinner entrees for lunch today, its what peaked our interest so we went with it. And a beer - nice choice list on that front. Mango roll Lemongrass Fish Eggplant with chicken Black Rice pudding for dessert. Meal came to $40 - pricier than the last lunch, but well within reason.
