There are plenty of mechanics and garages in Eugene to choose from, but I will definitely be pointing people in Sun Automotive's direction whenever I have the opportunity. I first came to Sun just because of their proximity to my home, and Bryan at the campus location helped me out with several smaller issues I was having without charging me - that easily earned them a first look when I had some real mechanical issues to deal with. Customer service means a lot when you're a smaller business, and those kinds of things go a long way towards creating customer loyalty. Most recently, I needed a shop alignment after making some modifications and repairs to my vehicle (I had first taken it to Les Schwab because Sun was booked for the week and I wanted it at short notice, but my estimate quadrupled when they told me my inner/outer tie rods needed replacing). Bryan gave me a call the afternoon of the day I brought my vehicle in and told me that they were able to complete the work, but that they felt they needed to fix some of my amateur driveway repairs to my tie rods. That required another 1.5 hours of labor to basically undo my work and then do it properly. Bryan said that he didn't wouldn't just add charges onto my initial bill - I had come in expecting to pay a certain price for an alignment. However, the repairs were definitely critical. He asked how I felt about paying for the extra labor. In a nutshell, I agreed to pay the extra because 1. I have a lot more peace of mind, 2. It's fair to pay a person for their labor, and 3. He took the time to ask me about the charge rather than just tacking it on. Like I said above, it's the small stuff that earns loyalty in a competitive business. I'd go to Sun before someone else, even if they had lower rates, because they do good work and they go above and beyond to earn your patronage. read more

My son brought his car here to find out what repairs it needed as it's an older vehicle. In their defense the things they listed as needing repairs were correct but the price they were charging for the repairs was outrageous! After looking over the estimate my husband told him to get a second opinion. He took it out to Springfield to a different mechanic. Same repairs for less than half the price. First of all, I never write reviews but this company's commercials about how fair and honest they are, are so outrageous and it could not be further from the truth it angers me every time I see one. You might see some positive reviews and that's only because the people that are writing them still don't know they got ripped off. I arrived in Eugene OR five years ago and the engine light went on in my SUV. I happen to be near an auto parts store and knew they had some testing device. They said they I needed some part replaced, I don't remember what it was called now, but it was $200 and easy to install. I didn't buy it then but went to Sun Automotive on Rustic Pl., to get an estimate to fix it. they looked me in the face and said it was gonna cost $900. I told him how the auto parts store said it would only cost $200 for the part and that would be easy to install. but Sun Automotive said the auto parts store didn't know what they were talking about and to replace it would be very difficult to get to. I suspected a rip off and went to a different auto repair company down the road. Not only did they tell me it was easy to replace that part, but when they checked out the car, the only thing that was wrong was that the gas cap was loose. I came here as a walk-in because my cars drain was plugged and water was leaking into my floorboards. Seemingly easy fix but as a college student with limited tools, I couldn't do it on my own. The woman at the front was very kind and within seconds someone was looking at my car. They helped me access the drain and even cleared it out for me for absolutely no charge. I was in Eugene from San Francisco with an older SUV I had hung on to in order to move my daughters stuff back and forth. On our last trip, we had a major malfunction with an air suspension system which required all 4 air shocks to be replaced along with other work. I knew this was coming, and had a quote from a few days earlier from a shop near where I live. This was a large undertaking with a very short timeline - parts had to come down from Seattle and I had less than 48 hours to get the car repaired so we could return home. My son took his truck there because it was idling rough; He used FIXD to scan it and told the service writer it had a misfire on #5 cylinder when he dropped it off to get an estimate to repair it. They quoted him $1300-$1600, and said they needed to change the spark plugs and de-carbonize it. I traveled from Long Beach California up to Oregon to pick the truck up and they charge me $150. When I asked what that was for, he said "to confirm the diagnosis with our scan tool." They also tacked on an environmental impact fee, even though they didn't change any parts, fluids, etc. I paid it, went to autozone and bought a new coil for $50 and 15 minutes later the truck is running great again, with no codes. The total cost of my flight to Eugene, hotel, food, and some tools I had to buy at True Value hardware (great store btw) was less than Sun's estimate. This is the second time he's taken his vehicle there; the first time I was suspect because they charged him $700 to change out a window (that Safelite would do for $200) and to diagnose an oil leak - then didn't fix the oil leak itself. They left the skid plate bolts loose that time and it dragged on the ground on the way home. I can't help but feel like they were trying to take advantage of a college kid who didn't know any better. This is the only store that does a good job. Springfield is okay. Don't go to Eugene unless you pay through the nose for little things like a Tie Rod. Agate, they used to wash the car years ago when the other owner was there. There's a guy that goes ballistic if you say anything about waiting. The one on Rustic Place has a problem. I was quoted $80 over the phone for a synthetic oil change plus a routine car servicing/inspection (which is $20 more than I pay at my usual place). Once I arrived at Sun Auto they said they recently "changed oil manufacturers" and my new total would be $115!!!! For an oil change!!! I took my rig into them for a diagnoses and to fix the issue it was having possibly. For them to just tell me I needed my transmission rebuilt. After further inspection myself I found a sensor plug to my transmission was smashed. That was the issue all along. Not that I needed a transmission rebuilt and that would fix the issue. I was looking for a Trustworthy auto mechanic that I could actually believe in. Well after being taken advantage of at C&L automotive, I tried Sun Automotive on Agate street. I had a new radiator, flange and hoses replaced along with some other minor repairs and over $2,000 later the work as done. I recently started having issues with radiator fluid leaking onto my garage floor. I asked the service manager if they would take a look at it for me and he said sure. I have had an excellent experience with Sun's crew. On my first visit to diagnose a leak in my sunroof, he refit the sunroof to a different angle and stopped the leak. He did this as a courtesy even though I was a new customer! This is notable as I had been to 3 different businesses, all of whom were going to charge me for the diagnosis and estimates of over $1,000 to fix it. My 2nd visit went equally well, a general mileage service for my Toyota Highlander that would have cost significantly more from the Toyota dealer. My 3rd visit was for new front brakes which he was able to do the next day. Finally, after my battery was recharged by a road service, lights went on that indicated something was askew and I stopped in and they ran quick diagnosis and figured it out immediately, reset it and never charged me. Josh is courteous, respectful and runs a tight ship always checking with his crew and with me if service went well. Suggesting to her a "second opinion" was in line, she had her now dismantled car taken elsewhere. Approximately 10 days and $3300. later, she has her vehicle back and running beautifully. OH! I took my car here needing a straightforward repair. After an estimate they quoted me almost $400 above a different estimate I received for the same repair. When I went to get my car back not only was I scoffed at but I was charged a $149 "diagnosis fee," which is almost double what I would consider fair market value. My car had a pinhole in the plastic T connecting the water hoses. My heater was not operating due to lack of water/antifreeze. I was charged $68.37 to diagnose the problem. I knew what the problem was. It was recommended that I change all hoses (5) and T. I said OK to $900+. The heater still does not work and I cannot get an answer as to whether the mechanic checked the thermostat. This place is Bad News. Conclusion - I just bought a new electric car and it is NOT American made. read more

However, they gave her the paperwork and told her to sell it for more than we had agreed on in the event the car checked out! Like most of you, I am super weary when it comes to taking my car into the shop. If you don't know who is going under the hood, it can be scary. I say this without hesitation, that this was by far the best experience at a mechanic that I have ever had. We had to get over $900 worth of work done on our brakes, so naturally I freaked out a little bit. Bryan, the service manager, walked us through the entire process, describing in detail what was being done to the car, and why. He was extremely professional and courteous throughout the entire process. To top it all off, he gave us a voucher for a free car was AND they buffed our headlights, for FREE. I have been a Sun Automotive customer for over twenty-five years now. When I first met Sun back in college in 1978 when my Pugeot (1966 vintage classic) master cylinder replaced. Then an alternator and I think a piston in the engine blew. Later, it was my 1978 Volvo. Now it is our only family car, our 2003 Toyota Tundra. From the initial greeting by Jack at the 19th and Agate location, to the amazing 30 years experienced chief mechanic, Calvin, you are always going to get the best, "under the sun." Calvin is quiet and unassuming. He never says more than two words and is the kind of mechanic you want on your side when you need one. Underneath his quiet exterior is a great mastermind. He can take something as complex as auto repair and break it down into common language, so that I can understand what needs to be fixed and why. Good quality, friendly service and repair, and a commitment to back it up without spending more than quote is what you will find at Sun. You will pay more - but you will get more. Life is like that. Lousy work. I had a water leak with the passenger floor mat getting wet, Sun Automotive told me they could fix it. I had it there three different times and paid them over $400 and it still leaked. They finally just told me to go away. Later I took my Acadia to the dealership and they found and fixed the leak. Also, I had Sun Automotive glue a rubber strip back in place on the roof of my vehicle, that was 10 months ago and it just blew out again. They might be okay to do an oil change but I would not trust them beyond that. read more
