I'm new to the PNW, so color me surprised when I turned on my outside car's heater and got hit with the distinct scent of zoo and port-a-potty. Yup. Rats had moved in. This being a time-sensitive matter, as rats could end up chewing through wires the longer they live in your engine compartment, Sun Automotive thankfully made space for my poor car the same day I called. They kept my car for 3 days and were able to work it in around other customers. They found the nest in my heater box and removed it and sanitized everything and changed the air filter where the rats had started another nest. After all of that, they sprayed herbal rat repellent and sent me on my way. They're pretty expensive, the rat repellent they sprayed was about $140, but they do good work, communicate updates well, and they worked me in same-day when other mechanics I called quoted me a whole week out. Overall, I'm very pleased that they were able to get the rats out before any more damage could occur. My car is now safely in a garage, so this will hopefully never happen again. I plan to return to Sun Automotive for regular maintenance. read more

First of all, I never write reviews but this company's commercials about how fair and honest they are, are so outrageous and it could not be further from the truth it angers me every time I see one. You might see some positive reviews and that's only because the people that are writing them still don't know they got ripped off. I arrived in Eugene OR five years ago and the engine light went on in my SUV. I happen to be near an auto parts store and knew they had some testing device. They said they I needed some part replaced, I don't remember what it was called now, but it was $200 and easy to install. I didn't buy it then but went to Sun Automotive on Rustic Pl., to get an estimate to fix it. they looked me in the face and said it was gonna cost $900. I told him how the auto parts store said it would only cost $200 for the part and that would be easy to install. but Sun Automotive said the auto parts store didn't know what they were talking about and to replace it would be very difficult to get to. I suspected a rip off and went to a different auto repair company down the road. Not only did they tell me it was easy to replace that part, but when they checked out the car, the only thing that was wrong was that the gas cap was loose. I'm telling you folks and I have nothing to gain for making this up. These are conniving thieves. BUYER BEWARE ! read more

My son was worried about his brakes sounding funny so he brought his car here they checked it out and he needed new brake pads and rotors. They ended up charging me about $600 less than Les Schwab would've charged for the same job in addition to that they give my son a ride to school and picked him up the next day when the car was ready. This was extremely helpful to our family since I had work meetings at both of the times that I could not get out of and my son had activities to get to. Sun Automotive continues to be my favorite mechanic shop in town. They have come through for our family numerous times and Cord and Sally are a pleasure to work with. After taking our vehicle in, we were told of many things they found wrong. We then started fixing what they said was wrong to find that their diagnosis was completely wrong, which ended us costing us money in the end that we didn't need to spend. They diagnosed it and we fixed it. Along with bad diagnostics, the prices were just astronomical I would not do business with them ever again or suggest anybody take their vehicle to them. read more

While Sun Automotive will get the job done, and I trust their services, it feels like their service fees are higher than other shops. I recently got my oil changed and tires rotated, which cost me $75. I was told that I also should replace my battery and air filter, which would be $225 for the battery and another $30ish for installation, and that it would be around $50 to change my air filter. I visited AutoZone later that evening and confirmed that my battery was bad (again, I trust Sun's auto repair and analysis), and while I paid the same price for a battery, AutoZone installed it for free. I also learned that changing your own air filter takes about two minutes and the filters are only $10 on Amazon. I get it; Sun Automotive is a business, and businesses have to charge for their service. I'd just like to see them bring down their labor fees a bit. In my opinion, you can probably find places to get Sun's services done for cheaper that are also trustworthy. read more

Charged over $1700 to replace a water pump. Really? Charged me $180 to diagnose exactly what I told them was wrong. Was going to charge additional $300 in labor to replace serpentine belt until I mentioned the old belt has to be removed to replace water pump anyway. (There is no additional labor required.). Also charged additional $250 in labor to replace thermostat that's mounted to the water pump that's being removed and replaced anyway . Maybe 10 minutes to swap old for new? Probably cheaper gto Buick dealer. First and last time I'm going there. Total rip off! Parts replaced were about $100 total on Amazon. read more

I had double trouble on the 1/9/23. Battery dead because alternator shorted it. Had it towed to Sun Automotive be A+ Towing. Left vehicle at Sun Auto. They looked at it last night and said hopefully this afternoon. Got it a 11:am. Fast service. Checked my engine and notice orange fluid in Power Steering fluid container. So Sun Auto flushed the lines and other areas and put in correct fluid. One problem with fast oil changes. Younger employees that don't know what they are pouring. Sun Auto. Found out my windshield wiper fluid tube had holes in it. Not 100% sure, but I think it was a squirrel. Called & had an appointment the next day. Before completing work, I was given a written estimate. If the amount goes over. They call you prior to proceeding. After I dropped my suv off, I was offered a ride home. This was great. No need to mess with Lyft or Uber. I also received a ride back to the shop once my suv was ready. This was a simple fix, but they did it correctly. Price wasn't too bad either. read more

I took my VW in for an electrical problem. I paid almost $150 for a diagnosis, and then I was told only the dealership could deal with my problem. No other shop is going to begin working on something another shop diagnosed, so why wasn't I told in the first place that I should take it to the dealership? I've recently started taking my VW in for routine maintenance at Sun Automotive and have been so happy I did. I trust them completely and they seem to have lots of integrity and are great at what they do. They do a free inspection with oil changes. They only recommend doing services based on if it actually needs to be done. Then they've done a quality job on the items that were recommended. They're prices are very fair, and so far there haven't been any big surprises when getting the final bill. In fact, it seems at times the bill is less than originally quoted. I can't say enough good things about Ryan and the folks at Sun. I had driven a truck up to give to a buddy, and just outside of town it became possessed, but only when warm. I'm mostly a DIYer, and in fact had changed the timing belt just before the trip. Finding myself without my diagnostic tools, away from home, it was amazing the extent that Sun went out of their way to pinpoint the exact issue to make it possible for me to finalize the repairs on the vehicle - a vehicle that to me was literally a give-away, so cost was very much an issue. In the end, the price difference between them completing the job and doing it myself was going to be minimal, and was going to be done then and there vs waiting on parts to be shipped, so I gave them the go ahead. Total time involved - overnight. Big red is back to running like a top, the demons having been cast out with the remains of the old distributor. They offer courtesy rides to and from after I drop my car off, which is very helpful to me as my family all lives out of town. Sun automotive has done a decent job with my car, but they have some system and customer service issues that have led to really awkward exchanges with them. I believe the issues should be addressed so I offer this review as a constructive critique. As far as the system, a few months ago I took in my car to replace the starter. They did a great job on it and I haven't had problems with the starter since. However, the time in which the car was being worked on exceeded their eta, but an employee showed up at our place to let us know the job was complete. We went back to pick up the car and learned their system wiped out my details so they were missing my phone number. No biggie. This time, I called a week in advance to schedule some routine maintenance, taking care to be sure I was contacting the correct location as there are a few Sun Automotives. When I took the car in, I was told that they did not see me on the schedule, but they had availability and could see me anyway, which was appreciated. I figured it was a similar issue to what happened last time and the employee also stated that the system loses information sometimes. It's understandable and has not caused any issues in my personal experience with them, but the potential for a real issue is high and I believe they either need a new system or a backup physical system to store appointments and contact info. However, the reason I won't be returning to this business is their customer service. Right after picking up the car from maintenance. My taillight notification light was on and it did appear that one was not behaving correctly. I figured something may have been jostled during the inspection. I wasn't mad, but I know nothing about cars and would not be able to correct something that I figured was just a simple mistake. I called them back to let them know. They did offer to look at the car for free, but also started stating that it may have been caused by the inspection or could also be a coincidence. It was a conclusion that I also came to prior to calling, but I figured that any auto shop would want to inspect an issue that came up the same day they worked on it. I brought the car back in today for them to take a look. The employee began reminding me again that it may just be a coincidence and unrelated to the service, which is starting to become irritating as I didn't care. I just wanted it fixed, I wasn't looking to place blame. The issue was found to be due to a burnt out bulb, but when I came back the employee was again being very defensive and going on about how the issue was not caused by the business, to which I always responded with some variation of 'okay' and didn't argue. It was a very odd, awkward exchange. The labor was complimentary on it and I paid for the new bulbs. There would not have been an issue if the responses were along the lines of 'sure. We can look into that for you' and skipped all of the discussion of blame as I was never angry about the issue and I never outright accused them of causing the issue, I just wanted it fixed. Also consider that you recommended about $2000+ of repairs to me that I am in the process of considering and researching, but will now take elsewhere. I'm not looking for any form of compensation or to cause problems. My issues are solely related to the front desk staff, the technicians have done a great job with my car. I wish you guys success and I'm sure that business is fine, but I believe a more reliable system and more of a customer-service-oriented mindset will help you a great deal. Take care. read more
