Oakmont Service Center came recommended by a respected transmission expert, and my first interaction with Jerremy, the manager, was positive. My initial visit--radiator exchange, exhaust leak repair, and a minor carburetor adjustment--went smoothly, and meeting the two mechanics who handle classics gave me confidence in the referral. That confidence didn't last. A Breakdown and a Missed Diagnosis During a casual weekend drive, my Chevy wouldn't start after a coffee stop. After checking the usual suspects with no luck, I called Jerremy. The car was towed in, and it took two days before Eric looked at it. Because I'd had a starter issue in the past, he removed and reinstalled the starter without performing a full diagnostic. A professional approach would have been to verify the actual cause rather than rely on history. The real issue was the distributor. I chose to upgrade to an electronic module and coil. Eric removed the distributor and sent it to a shop in Cottage Grove for the upgrade. When it returned, I made it clear--in front of Eric, Jerremy, and Mike (the owner)--that if there were any questions, they should call the builder directly. No call was ever made. Critical Steps Missed The builder later informed me that Oakmont suggested they "needed to get into the engine," which was unnecessary and incorrect. The distributor had been installed improperly, and a firewall-mounted module was still running six volts--something any experienced classic mechanic would have caught immediately. The car would never have started without correcting that. To suggest engine work without completing basic diagnostic steps was a bad call. Lack of Accountability When I stopped by to speak with Mike about the missed steps, he was "too busy" to talk. Jerremy took my number, but no one followed up. When I reached out again, I was offered a $100 refund--an acknowledgment that mistakes were made, but not a meaningful resolution. I was also disappointed to walk in and see Eric working on my classic without a fender mat. That alone speaks volumes about attention to detail and respect for the vehicle. Sometimes you just get very very lucky... Having just moved to Eugene and needing car servicing I checked all of the entries on Yelp and read all the reviews very carefully. Based on the reviews we made an appointment at Oakmont to get our truck serviced. The truck has not been serviced in 14 years! Oakmont was terrific, when we picked it up we were very confident that they had gone through it with a fine toothcomb and fixed all the issues. However, they are also practical, if it wasn't needing service, they didn't fix it, so rare in these times when garages try to push a total rebuild on you. Their prices are also very fair, no gouging here! The only problem is that they are so good that it can be difficult to get an appointment, but they always try to get you in if at all possible. These guys fixed up my car and gave me solid advice on future repairs. They are much cheaper than other places I called and seemed to know their stuff. They seem really packed schedule wise, so just know you probably can't get in same or next day. This place is a little hard to find, it's inside the shopping complex across from the CrossFit place. Basically headed down Coburg from downtown, you take the first right after Albertsons and it's the next right into the parking lot. Driving through from another state and my ABS sensor kept coming on. Had this issue before and it was a wheel speed sensor so I figured a dealership could diagnose it and I could just replace the sensor myself. Two different dealerships told me to leave my Jeep overnight, which I couldn't do simply because I had to be elsewhere by the afternoon. Looked up this shop via Yelp and stopped by to see if they could look at it. The shop manager Mike greeted me and after explaining the issue, he told me he was booked up for the next two weeks and that is typical for all auto repair in the area. However, seeing the quandary I was in, Mike still too the time out of his busy schedule to diagnose the computer and confirm the issue. Mike, great customer service!! My car's new battery would be dead every morning. So I took it to James, who had previously attempted to help me fix it over the phone. Of course we couldn't duplicate the problem, even though they kept my car for 4 days to see if it would act up again. Of course it didn't but James helped me check my fuses, kept my car safe for 4 days s (I was out of town anyway), and was an honest enough man to confess they couldn't find anything, didn't try and make something up, and did not charge me one red cent. If a company is willing to go to those lengths ands not even bill me for diagnostics.. Gave me some solid advice on what to look for, and politely wished me good day. My experience was bittersweet since it looks like my car will need to be salvaged. The owner was able to get my vehicle into the shop on a last minute notice, and after a single day turnaround my car was diagnosed with a failure at the car's main computer. My car is a 2004 Honda Element so it's pretty old, and not entirely unexpected but that doesn't help swallow the truth that it might be time to call the junkyard. I'm not sure why but the owner ACTUALLY WAIVED MY DIAGNOSTIC FEE! I was ready to pay it, but he told me "we're good." This seems like a special place to get your car worked on. The owner seems like a good dude... I had a faint vibe maybe he was Christian? Anyway... bittersweet but this is the best circumstance I could wish for to retire my Toaster. A non-car guy's, car guy. That's who Mike (owner) is. Finding a mechanic is not easy. I took a chance on this place and I'm completely satisfied. I had the car towed to his shop. He called to let me know what the problem was and what he recommended. I was disappointed when I couldn't pick up the car when he said it would be done, but it wasn't really his fault. (Bad part from his parts guy.) He called just after 9am the next morning to tell me my car was ready to be picked up. Bonus was that he threw in a free air filter, topped off fluids that he didn't need to, and tightened a clamp that were unrelated to my problem, but was causing some other problems. Perhaps the most important thing for me though is that he made me feel comfortable and built trust very quickly. I was told by a local dealer my car had a leak and based on the parts needed and labor( take apart part of the engine), it would be approx. 4k to fix it. Had it diagnosed and fixed at OSC for less than $50. They actually told me it would be around $100 and then they charge me less than $50. During the month of January of this year, your shop chased an overheating coolant system on my daughter's Nissan Xterra. Originally diagnosed as needing a new radiator, that was replaced at $755 and subsequently overheated a second time. This go-round, the shop could not replicate the problem. A week later, it overheated a third time. The shop then pointed to a blown head gasket with an estimated repair cost of upwards of $4,000. Unwilling to sink that much into an older, high mileage vehicle, I chose to have it transported to New Mexico to allow my son to have a backyard mechanic's project. Upon delivery, my son immediately noticed that the radiator cap was on the overflow tank and the overflow tank cap was on the radiator. A sure recipe on how to overheat the motor. After correcting the issue, replacing with new coolant, burping the closed system, it has not overheated once in over a week of driving to and from Rio Rancho and Las Alamos, NM the entire week after delivery. There was no blown head gasket, no leaking hoses, no issues with the heater core. At this point, I have doubts on if it needed a new radiator. The way I look at this is, your shop was going to charge my daughter close to $5,000 to fix what turned out to be a mechanic's failure to know the difference between a radiator cap and an overflow tank cap. My service engine light came on while I was driving from Los Angeles to Alaska. It had only been two months since I bought my car, and this was a long drive, so I pulled off the road and stayed at a rest stop near Eugene, OR. The next morning, I checked yelp for a nearby mechanic. There were a few reviews for Oakmont Service Center describing the owner as honest. That was the magic word. Although they were busy that morning, they hooked up the diagnostic gizmo and found the problem. I'd filled the gas tank all the way, for the first time since I bought the car, and the needle had gotten stuck at full. The gauge in the tank was malfunctioning. Not a serious problem, thank goodness. Something that can wait. They turned off the service engine light, and didn't charge me anything. Decent guys. I got a very reasonable quote from a Jiffy Lube to have my brake fluid flushed. Kendall Toyota said it needed a flush. Before going to Jiffy, I thought to check with Oakmont Service Center. They matched the lowest price for a brake flush and I made the appointment to get it done. Arrived on time and they took my Highlander in to do the work. A short time later, Mike came to me and asked who had recommended a brake fluid flush? I told him Kendall Toyota. He showed me the color coded strip that shows condition of brake fluid. It showed my Highlander fluid clear and not needing a flush. I said that made me quite upset with Kendall Toyota. Ever the professional, Mike said the a Kendall technician probably just looked at a service recommendation and followed it. I am sure there are some garages that would have just flushed the fluid and not said a word. Or, perhaps, not test the fluid and flush it and charged me. They recommended Mike and his crew at Oakmont Service Center and thank god it was close by. After 5 1/2 hours of work they got us back on the road well under the price they quoted us. Absolutely terrific! Not even 4 hours into a 16 hour trip, my thermostat decided it didn't like working. Worst part, it caused the car to overheat to the point of cracking my radiator nearly in half. Stranded on the side on a Saturday night, the tow truck driver recommended these guys. Couldn't be happier. I'm a new customer to Oakmont Service Center, and now a permanent one. I had been a longtime, loyal client of a major new car service center in Eugene. Several recent serious mistakes at the dealer service department created doubt, and when they recently advised that I needed MAJOR repairs, I went to Oakmont Service Center for a second opinion. NOT ONE of the major repairs was needed(!!) Was it the new faces at the dealership? New management? Cutting corners? Incompetence? Dishonesty? I don't know, but it didn't show well. So now I'm a loyal customer of Oakmont Service Center. They're small, so they may not get you in and out the same day, but they're competent and honest. They guarantee their workmanship for two years. Wow! Plus, the last time I was in, they couldn't correct the problem, so they would not charge me. I insisted on payment, but the owner would not accept it. Again, wow. So there you have it. Good quality, friendly, honest service and reasonable rates. I recommend making an appointment.
