Oh man, oh man, where can I start! Ken completely restored my Mazda's AC, door, back bumper, front bumper, body paint, etc. Basically, my car was a total wreck after I had an accident on the freeway when another driver rear-ended it. Yes, it was as terrible as it sounds. I went to fifteen different places but they would tell me they cannot get the whole job done either because they had no parts for it, they were all backed up, or simply cannot get the job done since my car was in such a bad shape. I was about to give up and go with one of them who told me they can do it but cannot guarantee anything until I met Ken. He not only got the job done but went beyond my expectations when he made it look good as new now! He not only resurrected my car from its untimely, sorry end and restore it to its former shining glory but actually made sure I was happy too! He did not treat me as another number like I felt in other places but actually went the extra mile to be sure I had the best experience from him! In fact, he went out of his way to repair, paint and polish other areas of my car that I did not even asked for like my busted front bumper and right side of my car, which had a deep scratch mark streaked across it from some punk with a jagged key years ago! Yes, my car has went through a lot and carries with it a great many battle wounds. Other places would also quadruple the rates for the stellar, impeccable service that he provides! Honestly speaking, I was too scared to drive after the accident and detested the fact that I had to commute on a daily basis because I had horrible experiences with unscrupulous or mediocre mechanics who would take advantage of my situation and do a terrible job on my car. In fact, they wanted to charge me even more to do the work that they should have done in the first place! With Ken though, everything changed and I can say with 100% certainty that he is not only a honest and hardworking mechanic as the other reviewers laud him for but also a excellent one, which I feel is a rare combination in all of my years in Hawaii. I would give him 10 stars if I could after everything he has done for me! So, if there are people out there who are suffering because of an accident and need an exceptional mechanic, come to his shop. He is the man, literally. I've been taking my cars to Ken sum for many years.. he's always been a stand up, direct, honest guy... and super reasonable with pricing! Last week I brought my truck in for AC problems, he figured what was wrong in minutes and even gave me some great advice to help me save me money, when he could've tried to convince me to fix this and fix that, like a regular mechanic would. He fixed my 05 Tacoma when it was all dented up too, and paint matched the silver spot on.. everyone knows silver is one of the hardest colors to paint match but these guys are awesome and no one could tell it was ever repainted! I just needed to replace a burnt out headlamp. So I call Toyota Servco in Mapunapuna and ask if they can change it. "No problem" they say "We have an opening in a month from now." Screw that. So I go to O'brien's Auto Part and buy the bulbs because I am a manly man and can change the light bulb myself. Yeah, I know. I should be able to change a light bulb myself but when I opened the hood there was a plastic cover covering the area I need to get to and I had not idea how to remove it. I called a number of other places close to work and either no one answered or didn't return my call. So I check Yelp to see Sum's General Auto repair. They have great reviews, give them a call, they answer the phone and say come by in 30 minutes and we can do it. The mechanic was a really nice guy. Took the bulbs I bought and popped them in. I asked him "how much" and he said "No charge. Just come by for a service sometime." I tried to give him a tip and he wouldn't take it. Wow, I was floored. Going to get your car fixed is a scary thing but not any more. Sum's is my go to place for now on. read more

I've never had any loyalty to any auto shop until I met Ken and his family at Sums Auto Body. From the start, Ken was attentive with taking my phone call, listening to what was going on with my Scion and accommodating me immediately by taking a look at my car the following day. He addressed the issues, ordered the parts, and said that he would call me the following week to inform me my car was complete. My scion was severely in need of repair, in fact, a complete engine overall. Whereas some shops turned me away, Ken gladly took me on as his client.. If it was not for Ken, my car would have ended up being sold for scrap metal on craigslist. Till this day, my Scion is running strong and well. The service is wonderful. The work is professional. The relationship you build with this company becomes more like a friend than 'a place you take your car'. The location is a little hard to find, but once you find it you're golden. Ken and his dad are personable and will tell you the truth, won't inflate the prices and their turn around is pretty fast too. I recommend you leave a text message if you don't get Ken on a call. He is often at the body shop (at another nearby location) painting a car. Sum's Auto Body took care of my Subie and I will not take it anywhere else. Honest and great work from a family business. What an auto repair shop should be like. A very rare find in Hawaii. I wish I brought my 9 year old Scion tC here earlier. I used to go to the dealer to get repairs but Servco messed up (separate review). I've been taking my car in for repairs at shops here and there. They were probably 2-3 star experiences but Ken's is really good. I've never been so satisfied from a repair shop before. Good prices and good communication about what is going on with my jalopie. I initially brought it in because a tech at goodyear said oil was coming out of my valvecover and it needed to be replaced. They found that the gasket was failing so bad that oil got on my spark plugs. I needed to change them anyways so they changed that also. Cracked PVC pipe? No problem, they fixed that too since they were under the hood. Parts were reasonable and labor was cheap because they won't charge you 30min. to change a pvc pipe like other places would. I didn't have to wait that long to get my car serviced and kept me updated as to when it would be done. Estimates were spot on. There were 2 other (better looking) Scion tCs there also so I know they know their stuff about my car which they did. And yes, they do other makes and models but judging my their wisdom (all shops may have knowledge, but wisdom is using that knowledge wisely). I'll be going here and taking my parents car here also. They worked on it a month ago and my Scion tC actually drove better as you'd expect from new spark plugs. Still running strong. Thanks Ken! read more

I called Sum's Auto Repair based on a recommendation from a friend. I spoke to Ken on the phone, told me to bring my car in the next day, explained the problem about my starter? maybe going bad. His brother Thomas greeted me and gave my car a look over. I had the starter remanufactured from Central Pacific Rebuilders (CPR) which was super close on Mokauea Street) and they have a new "sticker system" which they started about a year ago, as long as the starter/alternator has that sticker you don't/won't need the original receipt for them to take a look at it. Ken gave me a quick price estimate, said the job should take around 2 hours to complete. Thomas also noted that my radiator hose was bulging; I agreed to have that changed out as well. Ken and company took my starter back to CPR, diagnosed it was the solenoid which went bad, CPR fixed it and Ken and Thomas put the starter back in. Ken's prompt, professional, always open communication will not leave you "worrying" about what is going on/what's happening next. Unfortunately I work graveyard, so I had to come back to get my car in the morning. But Ken did text me that they finished the job that same day (plus they had to let my engine cool down, and had other cars/jobs before mine.) I was amazed at how fast they did it! He was even willing to DROP OFF MY CAR back to my house (what mechanics do that nowadays?) but when I woke up late at night to get ready for work, we agreed that I'd come back the next morning to pick up my car. Ken gave me a discount and even though he admitted that they took around 4 hours to take out/put back the fixed starter, he held true to his word/promise that he would only charge me for 2 hours! WOW. I know I've read from you yelpers that some auto mechanics are like dentists. You never know what you'll get. Some will upsell you while others even worse charge you for stuff and don't explain or just add on additional work without your consent/knowledge. Not so with Ken and Thomas!! I really really appreciated his honesty and explained that his reputation precedes himself. They are a local Chinese family, and I truly believe in supporting the little guy. Ken explained everything they did, printed out my invoice (from his phone, he's a kinda young guy and explains everything thoroughly, like a good doctor would, and texts more than calls! Constantly! Love the open communication!) We spent a good 15 minutes just talking about my car after, he gave me my keys, I told him I had some minor problems still that weren't imperative to the driving of the car (windshield wiper motor, etc.) and he said he'd gladly fix it later. He even offered me to come and enjoy a non profit function he had in downtown and invited me to come! (Again; what mechanics do you know treat you like OHANA on your first ever visit?) I could totally relate to this guy and couldn't stop thanking him. I just felt we clicked on all levels. His superior customer service skills is BAR NONE! Folks, I know there might be some more reputable, bigger, maybe far more seasoned veteran mechanics out there on Oahu, but if you're looking for a HONEST, RELIABLE, STRAIGHTFORWARD, NO NONSENSE MECHANIC, give Ken and his brother Thomas and his crew a call. You won't be disappointed. I will definitely be back to have my other "small problems" with my car fixed when funds permit. Thank you KEN, and THOMAS, for doing a fast and reliable job! Oh and P.S., Ken also stated that anything that goes wrong with the labor itself is LIFETIME. Stoked!! Great service, he even drops off your car if he can. The repairs are good, quick and reasonably priced. I don't feel ripped off at all. Ken is the manager and helps with repairs. He is very friendly and you will probably become his friend after your car is fixed. All the pretty girls will fall in love with him and want to take him home to see the parents. Seriously fantastic customer service. Called today to get an estimate for a repair my car needs, he asked me for my e-mail and said he would draw up an estimate for me and send it over. Got the estimate within the hour. It was a little higher than I was hoping, so I explained my situation and what I was willing to pay. I was offered a lower quality part for the lower price. Unfortunately, I was able to find someone closer to me who could do the repair for about the same price, so I decided not to go with Sum's. However, I will DEFINITELY recommend him to any of my friends who are searching for someone to do their auto repairs. Sum is such a great help and an honest mechanic. I had a problem with my tires but didn't know what exactly went wrong. He test drive it and told me I need to rotate my tires then it should be good. He could have charged me to rotate at his shop but instead recommend me to where I replaced my tires which will be free. Will repeat if I have any other mechanical issues! I created this yelp profile just so I could drop a review for this awesome business. The word "awesome" is well overused these days but these guys are truly, awesome. The first time I came here I was referred by a friend to call Ken at Sum's auto repair when my 4runners starter was giving out due to an oil leak in my engine. I talked to Ken on the phone and he was basically able to diagnose the problem by asking me a few questions. I brought in my car the next day and brought my bicycle with me to get home, but Ken insisted on giving me a ride. You don't see that kind of service these days! My car was in the shop for a couple days, super fast for all the work I had done. (replaced all gaskets, water pump, starter, timing belt, spark plugs, etc.) The price of everything ended up being much less than the price another mechanic up the street had quoted me. Ken even recharged my A/C for no charge! On top of that he washed my car for me on the way out. Overall, Ken and his workers are super nice and a pleasure to do business with. If your looking for straight talk, friendly service, great communication and quality work, this is the place! ****Update**** The visit described above took place in July, I meant to write a review sooner but was lazy. But today my car was making a strange noise when I would start it. I called Ken and he told me to bring it in. Turns out my starter was faulty, and luckily was covered under warranty. I left my car there for 3 hours and went back that evening to pick it up. Ken put in a new starter and didn't even charge me for labor. Unreal. I'm a customer for life. While getting a safety check renewal at Lex Brodie's on Queen St., my driver's side door was smashed as a result of an in shop accident. Lex Brodie's took car of the repairs by sending my vehicle to be repaired at Sum's General Auto Repair. The repairs that Ken Sum completed, were done to sub-par standards. The pain job was less than perfect- leaving visible drip marks. These drip marks were minimal. However, anyone who specializes in auto repair, and furthermore takes pride in their work, would not have been satisfied with the finished product. There was no attention to detail, which I strongly believe is the differentiating factor that separates an ok mechanic, from a great one. My driver's side headlight cover was scratched and oxidized. He claimed to have polished and compounded the clear plastic, but the results were as if it was barley wiped with a rag. I could scratch off some of the transferred substance that created scratch mark- with my fingernail. So, how is it possible that he polished and compounded the scratch mark, but the final product seemed so untouched, that I would remove parts of it with my finger? I don't know if he did a very haphazard job, was unable to to do the work necessary to remove the marks or if he just lied about all the lengths and attempts he made to remedy this scratch. Overall, the work wasn't "horrible", but coming from a family of machinists, mechanics and general automotive repair professionals, I can wholeheartedly say that they don't take pride in their work, don't put forth the effort needed to be considered a good-great automotive repair shop and are clearly more interested in making a profit, over rendering the results that should make that money well spent. If you're considering hiring this shop to do your repairs, I would highly recommend you get an extremely comprehensive break down of what they can and will do, and compare that against your expectations. Make sure you get all the information up front, and clearly convey your expectations. Maybe this will prevent any further disappointments when utilizing this shop's services. read more

Very knowledgable with mechanics and pleased with that end of his work. However, Ken needs to hire a receptionist or something because we were always the ones calling him to check on the update of our vehicle. Also, when the care was repaired, he was the only one that could provide a receipt/invoice for us and he wasn't on site, so we paid and he said he'd email us the receipt that night. Well, suffice to say, we haven't received the receipt after we tried to contact them numerous times without and response. Would have been 5 Stars if they have someone that responds in kind.
