TERRIBLE. A relative took their car in for shocks and struts, NOTHING related to oil system. Immediately after getting the car back the same day, she started having serious issues involving oil leaking. When she opened the front, the oil cap was missing and there was oil everywhere. It even started leaking to the inside of the car. We had to have it towed to New City Nissan, and we were told by a lady on the phone who works at this company that they would cover the cost of everything. After everything was cleaned up by new city nissan, this place changed their story and absolutely refused to pay for anything so we had to pay out of pocket. Then, they tried to blame US for the oil cap going missing. Through a phone call claiming, "that's your problem." EXACT QUOTE DIRECTLY FROM THE OWNER HIMSELF, FRANK. Again, what we were getting checked out had NOTHING to do with any part of the oil system, so they shouldn't have touched it in the first place. We came in with a minor issue, yet we were left with an even bigger problem which continues to need repair a week later. You guys are prideful of being an "honest" auto shop, yet there was nothing honest about this experience...nor can you guys take any ounce of accountability. I STRONGLY recommend taking your vehicle to anyone else. If you're going to all have bad attitudes and treat your customers terrible, at least do your job well. But unfortunately, these people are incapable of doing either. The way they are responding to their reviews should tell you enough. Don't waste your time. read more

Jarrett was amazing from the start of our call to the completion of our vehicle. Having the type of day we experienced and the challenges we faced prior to the call made to Jarrett. He was friendly, assertive and made every effort to assist us in every way possible. In addition it began to storm rain as soon as "Sally" our mustang arrived with the tow truck and he also accommodated our car by placing her in the shop. In conversation with Jarrett upon reaching the shop I confirmed the price for service we discussed over the phone being $140 but I stated $180 in error. Jarrett immediately corrected me to it being $140. I immediately appreciated his honesty and loyalty at that moment. Something very hard to come by today. In closing - We anticipated our car not being completed til the next day given it being as late as it was in the day upon arrival. However, I received a call not even an hour upon drop off that Sally was done. Considering the type of day we endured it turned out to be an intensifying blessing. Went in to this auto repair shop to escape the big name repair places and the Dealerships that rip you off and do awful work. Trying to give some local small businesses some support I went in to ask if they changed brake pads for my "rare" Toyota Tacoma - you know - the pick up truck driven by millions of people in Hawaii - but the old lady in the office gave me the 3rd degree - "how do you know you need a brake job? - I just turned 100,000 miles on it" "What size tires do you have on it? - The stock size." "It Depends in how you drive - do you ride the brake? - ah no I am pretty good at not riding the brakes." She had an attitude like she didn't want to be there or take on any more work. The service bay had 2 cars in it during the mid morning and the mechanic was talking story at the entrance - so its not like they were smashed. In fact it looked slow. So I said okay thank you for your time and walked out. The mechanic standing outside when I first went in asked "you going bring your truck in?" I guess he figured I made the appointment - I just no - thanks though- he looked bewildered- and I don't blame him - a brake job on a 2013 Toyota Tacoma?? He could probably do it blindfolded - with the number of Tacomas on this island - he probably has done a bunch of them. I was very shocked to see such a high rating for this place, and I also realized that all the bad reviews were somehow hidden. The old lady who worked there was so mean and unprofessional. I am not sure why she thinks she can speak to her customers the way she does. She sighs a lot and seems to be bothered every single second. I feel sorry for her grandchildren whose photos were displayed there. Obviously, she did not want to work at that old age. Because my brakes were obviously not functioning properly as I went to the gym the other night, I called here the next morning shortly after they opened at 7am. Because of the emergency I was given the green light to bring my car in that morning. Frank took a look at it and then asked me what kind of problems I had. Was advised a part needed to be ordered and Gilda took my cell number down as she'll call me when the car's done. They are very pragmatic in their interaction. They will tell you straight up if they can take you or not. They will tell you they accept credit card without any prompting. They will tell you what their findings are and ask you if you want them to work on the car. If they say 12 noon, the car is ready then and all the billing info is ready for you. Some may perceive this as unfriendly or cold, but understand that they're family-run and very busy. Organized, efficient, practical. The rate is also very affordable. My 05 Honda Accord needed a new starter. After reading a couple of reviews for multiple places around the Honolulu area, I decided to try K&Y Auto since the yelpers gave such great reviews about this place. I called the shop around 7am and the phone was answered by a lady. She seemed helpful on the phone and said they would reserve a spot in their shop for me that day. I explained that my car had to be towed so I wasn't too sure as to what time I was going to arrive, she said it was fine and even suggested a towing company she recommends.**** I have to mention that the lady (who I found out later was the owner) suggested that she pay for the towing upfront and I pay her back since the towing company wont charge her tax, she said it was to help me out....I thought that was a little strange, but worth noting. A friend of mine said that it wasn't a trustworthy move** The shop is located by Ward's Ave, right by the gas station and across from Café Duck Butt. I was met by a gentleman who told me that it was my starter that needed to be fixed and that it would cost roughly around $400-$500 to repair. I asked if there was a waiting room where I may wait for my car to be fixed and they said there wasn't one but suggested the Starbucks about a quarter a mile away.. about 15 minutes after I left the shop, the owner calls me to say that the repair was more than they realized and proceeded to explain that the new cost was $680 and some change.....much more than I was originally lead to believe...I don't know much about car repairs but from other people I spoke to, $680 was a hefty price tag. After about 4 hours, I received a phone call saying my car was done. Paid for the repair, given the keys and left. No counseling on what they did, no advice on further upkeep of my vehicle, nothing extra..just straight up "Here's the bill" "Will it be cash or credit?" "Here's the keys and your car is outside" In short, I think I got one upped, probably paid more than I should but lesson learned..I WOULD NEVER COME BACK HERE AGAIN...but at least my car is fixed read more

Tell me what's wrong, what's its gonna take to get it done, how long it's gonna take and how much it's going to cost me. I guess that's four. And be honest about it seriously. Five. Frank is awesome. He changed my oil, checked my transmission fluid, and gave me the low down on how my car is doing. He speaks fluent pidgin so I got a kick out of that too. He was blatantly honest giving me the state of the union speech for my car but I could tell he was being honest with me and for that, I'm coming back. His wife on the other hand is pure business. No soup for you sir! Pay and get the hell out. I was a little confused after I left on whether I wanted to be back but their prices are reasonable, I didn't get that slimy feeling when I drove away, and I basically had to pry myself away from Frank cause he wouldn't stop talking. One shop I called didn't even have the time to order the part. I was told I could order it and bring it in. Not these folks. Needless to say, the car was done by 1100am Friday. Had a problem with charging system but they checked everything out and although I had my alternator checked by the parts place, they either had checked it wrong or just didn't want to give me warranty. She is kind of one of those that's just very blunt and straight to the point, and not very personable, LOL. They diagnosed the problem promptly but said that the car frame was rusting out. we decided to take the car back and try to deal with the dealer based on a warranty. When we came back to pick up the car, they were very cold and abrupt. No eye contact. This was our first experience with this shop after our mechanic of 30 years retired. While they seem competent and I'm glad they got my car running again, but I thought their behavior at the end was really unprofessional and unfriendly, and that alone will prevent me from giving them my business in the future. read more

As I was slowly driving by K & Y Auto Service, a car mechanic walked towards me asking me, what I need. He was very polite! I came to K&Y today and they were the furthest thing from friendly. The lady that met me looked annoyed that I was there so early, hardly listened to me when I told her what's wrong with my car, then told me that it would be $110/hr (for God knows how many hours) to diagnose my car... this is after I told them that my car dies while I drive it. It was unfortunate that they didn't show much concern. Zero customer service... after 10 minutes (or less) at their shop, I found myself leaving upset. I found the shop after circling for a while soon as I pulled up he went straight to work I was out of there in less than 20 mins. Went in thinking I needed to get my clutch replaced which is big bucks. Frank found out what the problem was and gave me a call saying it wasn't the clutch.. It was the clutch plate that completely cracked in half... I rather pay $200 than $1500!!! So everything was all good, thanks Frank! Locally owned & operated family business. A friend recommended this place to me over 3 years & two cars ago. They are the best & always willing to help when in need. They are often busy so I drop my car off & let them know they can keep it for a few days if necessary, but they don't take long at all. Usually I'll get a diagnosis either the same day or first thing next business day. The prices are fair & reasonable and location is convenient. I even sent my Mom there & they took great care of her as well. They never try to upsell, only provide you with what you need, and the always provide a detailed receipt so you can track the car maintenance. This place is BAD news for your car. They will empty your cars anti-freeze fluid; bone dry(empty). And you gave it to them full with anti-freeze. They give you back your car that way;empty. They don't even give you paperwork when you drop off your car. They keep your car then call you in a couple of days telling you they are not going to fix it. Don't even tell you what is wrong/diagnosis. This business should be investigated by the DCCA of our state to see all the illegal things they are doing. And hurting consumers read more

I feel very fortunate to have found Gilda and Frank Young to work on my car. He is a mechanic's mechanic. I was referred to him by another mechanic and found him to be extremely competent , affordable and very pleasant to do business with. Prior to going to him, I took my car to a mechanic that I had been going to for years and was told that my head gasket had blown and this would be a 4 to 6 thousand dollar job. Somehow I felt that I needed a second opinion and it was fortunate that I did. Frank found a small hole in one of my hoses and that was all that was needed!! Needless to say, I was very, very pleased and my car has been running like a charm. I will be going back to K & Y for all of my future car problems without a doubt. Someone recently tried to steal my vehicle, but couldn't complete the job thanks to a good neighbor that came home at the right time and scared the scoundrel away. The thief broke the ignition in my vehicle. I managed to get a new ignition and had it re-keyed. Once installed, my vehicle would not start. Many of the staff at the U.S. Geological Survey recommended that I take my vehicle in to K & Y Auto Service because they are fairly priced and they can get the job done. I was a bit skeptical, but I gave them a call. I first spoke to a lady by the name of Gilda and she was extremely helpful over the phone. I then decided that I would go with their service and had a tow truck company tow my vehicle to their shop, which was about a mile or two away from my home. As soon as the tow company delivered my vehicle to the shop, there were a total of three (3) mechanics inside my vehicle that were working on finding the problem. Within five (5) minutes, they found the problem and knew what was needed to get my vehicle started. Apparently, the thief that tried to steal my vehicle had messed up the back of the key cylinder. The mechanic, Frank advised that I would need the steering column replaced. Wow, the dealership quoted a cost of nearly $1,600 for a new steering column and that it would take approximately two weeks for the part to come in. That's when K & Y took it into their own hands to find the part locally at an auto salvage yard and they did just that. They found a steering column off of another vehicle and all I had to pay was a mere $300 for it. The total cost to get my vehicle working, parts and labor was under $500. It only took a day and a half for my vehicle to be ready to take home. The awesome thing was that the entire staff at K & Y Auto Service called me several times throughout the time that my vehicle was at the shop, just letting me know where they are at with my vehicle and what was going to be done. If you are looking for an auto shop that provides affordable rates, mechanics that can troubleshoot issues with your vehicle within minutes, can find alternate solutions that are cost effective to the consumer's needs and provide superb customer service, then I highly recommend that you take your vehicle in to K & Y Auto Service! read more
