We walked here for dinner from our nearby hotel. The place is on a quiet side street away from the busy main street. For Saturday night there was only one table already seated. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. The wait was a little longer than expected but everything was well presented, savory, and satisfying. I really enjoyed the wagyu steak combo and the Godzilla roll.
For this review I ordered the dish via takeout, so the focus of this review is on the food. I'll visit the restaurant to eat in one day and update the review when the time comes. Brief summary: - Great balance of vegetables and fish proteins in the sushi burrito - Eat bite had a good mix of proteins and rice - Located near the BART station - Burrito is well-packed; stomach is content with a spot in the stomach for dessert We ordered three different types of sushi burrito. When browsing the menu, I was debating on getting the Hawai'ian or the 3-in-one. The ingredients in these ones attracted my attention. In the end, the burrito that had more fish proteins won (because I like fish), so 3-in-1 it is. Fortunately, one of my relatives chose the Hawai'ian, so I got to try a a bite. The burrito was kindly cut into two, making it easy to hold and eat. Inside of the sushi burrito is beautiful with assortment of colors from the fish proteins and the vegetables. In each box, it comes with a small container with gari (ginger) and wasabi. The first bite was pleasant because already I got a bit of the cabbage, lettuce, and fish in addition to the rice and the seaweed. The vegetables and the fish are seasoned, so it's not just eating a salad. The texture is a great mix of crunchy, crispy, and chewy. I love hamachi (yellowtail), so I was happy to taste this in the mix of the other three fishes. Even near the last bite it wasn't just rice and seaweed, there was still something to eat. I have a suggestion to the soy sauce packets that came with the takeout style. While the burrito is flavorful, I did pour droplets of soy sauce to get more of the rounded salt flavor (or maybe I'm used to eating fish with soy sauce). It would be best if these were from Kikkoman, or once the restaurant considers an upgrade, Yamasa soy sauce. Yamasa soy sauce is preferably better but the price is higher. The ingredients listed in the soy sauce we received are not in typical soy sauce. I didn't use these packets and instead used a bottle I have at home.
This was the first time I have ever had a sushi burrito and let me just say. It was FIRE. So yummy and so filling. I am so full. We go the 3 in 1 burrito and the Hawaiian burrito. Both were delicious. Generous portions of fish in them. Poured some soy sauce and spread wasabi and added ginger on to each bite. This is such a good bang for your buck. So flavorful and so fresh. Will definitely be back when I'm craving sushi again.
Lovely restaurant in Downtown Berkeley, we came in the afternoon & ordered a Hawaiian Sushi Burrito & the steak meal set. Sushi burrito was so delicious! I loved it, flavors were fresh and well balanced with the perfect touch of umami. I'm so excited to come back, they had around 8 sushi burrito flavors which I love! The steak meal was a generous portion and delicious too. Service was great, the server who helped us gave amazing recommendations and was very attentive. Ambiance is lovely as well. The decor is very traditional Japanese aesthetic, cozy and quiet with calm atmosphere. Overall, I loved it & am excited to return!
I would rate this place as a 4.5! Was in the area and wanted some casual sushi for dinner. Doesn't seem like there's a specific sushi spot in the area that's particular popular, but I came across this spot on yelp and the reviews looked pretty good. Bonus points for being conveniently located (only a 2-min walk away from the BART station)! Also, the overall restaurant (and restroom) was clean, so that's always greatly appreciated in Berkeley. The prices of the sushi rolls were definitely not cheap, but the taste and quality were good. We got an order of the lion king and the 49ers to share between the two of us. Both were delicious and was the perfect portion size for us. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area and craving some sushi. BTW don't be like me and forget to check in on yelp for that 10% off your bill!
We had a craving for sushi last night and decided to go to Sumo. Friday night, it was packed since the university is in full swing. We had to wait for about 20 minutes but as usual it the food was well worth the wait. We've been going there for years. The waitress, Helen, knows us by name and our quirks (gluten free soy sauce and lots of pickled ginger) and she always takes good care of us. We've been to many sushi restaurants and my daughter said tonight that " this is hands-down, my favorite sushi place." I have to agree with her. Downtown Berkeley is always packed during the school year so leave a little extra time to find parking if you're visiting by car. If you're coming in on Bart, it isn't a problem it's very close to the station.
Good food and excellent service at this small Japanese restaurant across the street from the Berkeley campus. The shrimp tempuras were good sized and super crispy. The Unagi was soft and tender with a good hint of sweetness. Our host/server was attentive and kept checking on our family. Will definitely come back again.
Stopped in tonight for take out. Located across from Edward's Stadium / UC campus. We ordered a caterpillar roll, the Hawaiian sushi burrito and the Yoshihama sushi burrito. Service was super friendly. Everything was delicious and fresh. Excellent rice to fish ratio. Large serving size that could easily be split. We will definitely be back soon.
This place is amazing! Their sushi is really good & taste fresh, I would recommend this place to everyone. I came 2 days in a row and even 2 times in one day lol.The staff are also very welcoming and sweet every time i come here. The restaurant is a small restaurant but very nice and clean !
Sumo Roll, in my opinion, has really good sushi burritos. Better than Sushirittos! The ingredients are fresher, and its a sit down restaurant. The lovely woman who served us explained very nicely and in detail about the Sushi burritos we asked about.
Some of the best sushi we have had in suchhhhh a long time! We waited a bit for our sushi to come out, but I understood, once I ate it, why it took so long! I feel like a lot of sushi places rush their rolls and they don't come out efficient, but these two rolls were soooooo good and made correctly. The waitress was also so kind and attentive, her energy was so sweet we loved her! Definitely our go to sushi spot during our evenings from now on. 10/10 recommend! We look forward to trying out other rolls + the burrito next time.
Hats off to the chef owner, Gino, because my boyfriend and I experienced one of the yummiest Japanese cuisines in the Bay! We ordered the okonomiyaki (octopus pancake) first as an appetizer and... o m g... each bite was incredibly moist and creamy paired well with the chewiness of the octopus. I've been to my fair share of poke parlors across the Bay and there is always a distinct "poke" taste. The poke dish offered at Sumo is different though. It has an elevated gourmet taste to it. It's hard for me to describe it but it is by far one of the best poke dishes I've eaten. Last but not least, we got the fried chicken and crab sushiritto. I mean look at the photo...it's glorious, it's jam packed, it's giving "made with care and passion". The soft, creaminess of the crab paired well with crispiness of the chicken. I also loved that the cabbage and shredded carrots gave each bite a fresh vegetable texture. It was simply delicious. We ordered another one for to-go. Overall, Sumo Roll exceeded our expectations. We have this place bookmarked as one of our favorite sushi spots in the Berkeley area. Thank you to Chef Gino and his staff for the amazing service!

I've been wanting to try sumo roll for a while now and they did not disappoint. I love the burrito sized sushi rolls that they have. It's the PERFECT picnic food! I ordered the California burrito roll and it was the perfect size for picnicking. The tempura was nice and crunchy and the cabbage balanced out the fried parts. The employees there are also super friendly which is a plus. I can't wait for the warmer months to come so I can grab one and eat outside again! read more

They've got the poke bowl menu system down to a humming dry-marker machine (see photo). No extended discussion or iPad in sight. You just fill in the circles, like on the driver's test or the SAT. I hear you can get professionals to fill in the circles at the Beverly Hills location. There are a bunch of sushi burritos, regular and gluten free. Following the dictum that every Berkeley restaurant have something cryptic on the menu, the sushi burritos are all tagged with a green asterisk, which means "* SIGN", also in green. Somehow "SIGN" means "Gluten Free". I've learned not to ask too many questions. I skipped the burritos and had a fine poke bowl, excellent fish and fresh ingredients, in a REAL BOWL instead of those fish-kill plastic ones. read more
Great place to go for sushi burritos - much more affordable than SF's Sushirrito. They're basically just giant sushi rolls. Amazing. Lately, they've been trying to pivot to a more normal Japanese place kind of vibe, and the regular sushi rolls are pretty decent as well. They probably aren't as good value as the sushi burritos, but the fish is quite fresh, and the rolls are rather large and have nice quality rice. Much better than many similar sushi places in the area. This place will be my new go-to when I'm craving sushi but am feeling cheap. Poke seemed a bit lackluster, but cheap compared to other poke places in the area. read more

Sumo Roll is affordable, filling, and downright fantastic. I ordered via pickup on Postmates, and my order was ready 10 minutes before the original pickup time (a rare occasion!). The lady who helped with my pickup was incredibly nice, and even asked if I wanted any extra toppings on my Sumo Bowl (This time i ordered a pretty basic bowl, and it was nice that she asked if i wanted anything else!). Out of all of the restaurants I have been to in recent memory, I think this has been one of my best pickup experiences! Quick, easy, and very welcoming ambience for just about anyone. Overall I have no choice but to give Sumo Roll on their punctuality and service alone. However, their food is as amazing as the staff there. You can tell they put a lot of care into their meals, from the perfectly crispy shrimp tempura, to the luscious and fresh yellowfin tuna. Their rice was almost perfectly made as well, and I am incredibly excited to have found a place that I love! Thank you so much Sumo Roll, and I can't wait to see you again! read more

Exceptional service. Very great server, she was very kind, sweet, and attentive. Food was very tasty. They have great deals. We ordered the sushi combination and a real California roll. The hot sake was very nice too. The large and small sizes are very well off and flavorful. The ambiance was cute. Very much a family owned place. I like these small businesses. one of the best sushi spots in berkeley! I've came here on a number of occasions and everytime I cum I am satisfied with my dish. All the rolls Ive had have been nothing but exquisite. The service is also amazing. The store itself is a bit small, but it's never been too busy where it disrupts my experience,so that was never an issue. read more

TLDR: affordable, great value for the amount you're paying, and delicious fresh fish. Summary: I've been coming here for a little bit over six months now and it's my new favorite sushi/poke/sushi burrito place in Downtown Berkeley. This place is the whole package: friendly and courteous service, high grade fish with great taste, lots of variance in options, and great price. Fish quality: I'm preface by saying I mostly order Salmon with my Poke Bowl and order Salmon rolls, but their Salmon (and I'll assume other fish quality as well) is on point. I always get great, fresh tasting pieces with very visible fat lines. *I want to also mention their crab salad is A+. Although I'm not 100% sure if its imitation or real crab, it definitely tastes a lot fresher and cleaner than the usual crab salad you get in Sushi burritos/pokebowls. It tastes very clean and actually has some flavor that is not overpowered by the cream/mayo usually used for crab salads. Variability: Although my go-to is ordering the pokebowl which always comes out to around 9.50, they also have delicious sushi burritos (which I've ordered a few times as well) and lots of sushi rolls and other cooked dishes (I've personally ordered their unagi bowl which is also very good, a lot of eel meat). Value: As a graduate student, I know how important value is to students! As a result, I always try to eat out at places I know I will get great value for. I'm approximately 175 male and eat quite a bit and I rarely leave Sumo Roll feeling hungry. My wife always seems to be very satisfied with the portion size as well (although I usually end up eating the last 1/5th of her meal). Conclusion: If you're a fan of sushi, sushi burritos, or poke bowls, you owe yourself to come and try out Sumo Roll. read more

The portion sizes were great and everything tasted great. It was a little hard to spot at first but the inside was surprisingly well lit. I got the dragon roll and the yellowtail and mackerel nigiri. I really like the dragon roll. The shrimp tempura was nicely fried and crispy. They were a little heavy on the sauce but that was fine by me. Service was also very prompt and friendly. read more

In terms of service, my waitress was very friendly, sweet, and attentive. For food, I ordered the hamachi, seared salmon belly, o-toro, unagi, and tamago nigiri, as well as the waguy maki. At first, I thought the tamago and seared salmon belly prices were a bit steep, but from my pure enjoyment and the size of the slices, I will definitely return and order them again. The wagyu/waguy maki was absolutely phenomenal; the beef was incredibly marbled and melted in my mouth, and I really enjoyed the real crab in the roll. I can't wait to eat here again! read more

Sumo roll is the first sushi burrito I've had comparable to the quality and taste of Sushiritto. I've tried many different variations, and the size and taste of these sushi burritos were on par. I ordered the Hawaiian burrito. Sadly, the one I wanted to order is seasonal or served for a limited time of the year (not sure when). So I settled for this. It was packed with fish and seaweed salad, and veggies. There wasn't any issue with quantity, and it turned out to be just the perfect size for my tum! The fish was also very fresh, adding to a satisfying meal. Location is pretty convenient too if you park at the Oxford garage. Just around the corner! They also have HH on a few snacks and alcoholic beverages from 4pm-8pm, daily. I didn't partake but I'm interested in this for next time! If you're ever in the area, I suggest dining in or taking it to-go. We came around 5pm on a week night, and it was empty. So you can rest assured, you will experience quick service. read more

AMAZING! The service is 10/10! They are so sweet and quick. Their food is so delicious too! Everything comes out fresh and piping hot and everything is flavorful and there's so much to pick from. I went for my birthday and they gave me a free ice cream (super nice of them). All of their food is quality as well as their ambiance and overall look. Definitely go for an experience! Wow! The sushi burrito from here are amazing! I was so impressed and so stuffed after. I got the Cali burrito and it was so tasty. The prices were totally reasonable too. One complaint I always have going to normal sushi restaurants is I'm still hungry after OR I paid an arm and a leg. Not here! One burrito and that's all ya need. Staff was very friendly too! If I'm in the area again I would definitely return! read more
Came here for dinner with a group of friends. It's a small restaurant, but it's clean and modern looking. We each ordered a donburi and some rolls to share. Both the rolls and the donburi were very well made an delicious, and we left feeling quite satisfied! Our server was very cute and sweet and made sure to attend to all of our needs. So I ordered the: -Alaska roll 3/5 -rainbow roll 3/5 -sake maki roll 2/5 -dragon roll 3/5 Everything was really average-- I was a little disappointed. The pieces of salmon and tuna on the rainbow roll were oddly warm and tasted a bit old? It was a little nasty and too chewy, I didn't like it at all. The sushi in itself, kinda bland, again warm?? And just super small. The ginger and the wasabi were in a separate cup and the wasabi and ginger were so liquidy and again oddly warm/hot?? It was weird. The ginger liquid mixed with the wasabi and the wasabi was more of a sauce/goo when it got delivered. It may have been because it was delivered from postmates. OVERALL-- I don't think I'll order take-out again; simply wasn't good. I'd consider trying dining in once covid is over. read more

012620- Great service! The sole server made sure we were taken care of and worked super hard to get our food ordered and served quick. She notified how long our order would get to us (15 to 20 min) and to order early so she could get it to us fast. I can understand why the food took so long because they only had one chef. Sumo Roll is a solid 4.5 stars. My main gripes are that the hours kind of suck, since they close super early, and the dishes can sometimes take forever to make. Like today, I was initially given an estimate that my rolls would take 25 minutes, but they actually took 45 minutes to make. The servers are nice, though - they gave us a free edamame bowl and they're just nice in general. The rolls have all been super good here. Oddly enough I haven't tried the sushi burrito thing, but honestly it just doesn't really seem like my style. I think my favorite roll here was the 49er's. It hits the upper bound for how good a roll can be. The rainbow roll wins second place here. The quality of the fish is really good. I wasn't a huge fan of the Lion King to be honest. I just couldn't really taste the fish, and the sauce is like kind of an overpowering flavor (not so much that it's difficult to eat or anything - the roll is still delicious). On those edamame beans, really good stuff. Really good quality, nice big beans with the right amount of salt. The ginger here is like really tasty. I don't know why it's so good. Overall, this place is a little out of the way for me, but when I'm nearby it's definitely a good pick. I think I do probably prefer Musashi only because they're so much faster. Sumo Roll is a great place, though. I support it. read more
I wanted sushi, and the husband wanted ramen. This place was the best of both worlds! Based on the pictures on yelp, I expected a little fast food joint that sold sushi burritos, but it turned out to be a cute little restaurant! The server was very attentive and super friendly! I appreciate her coming to check if we needed water or anything else. I enjoyed my sushirrito although it would it would've been great if I had wasabi with it since I am basically eating a giant sushi roll. My husband's ramen was pretty impressive since we didn't expect much from a place that was a jack of all trades in the Japanese realm. The bowl didn't look too big but it was actually a really good amount. My husband was pleasantly full from it and the flavors were pretty rich! The prices were pretty decent and not overly expensive for ramen in the Bay Area! read more

Another sushi burrito spot opens in Berkeley. I came in by myself and got the kamikaze (spicy tuna) and upstream (salmon). I didn't like the kamikaze very much because everything was cold. Perhaps I should of waited to eat it at room temperature. It also wasn't spicy enough for me. Habañero tuna is not bad idea. They should consider different levels of spiciness. I ate the upstream later in the day and tasted much better at room temperature. It was much more flavorful. The rolls are very plumpy with lots of toppings/ingredeints. It seems that the rolls have more toppings than actual fish. A little more fish/protein would be nice. You can always add extra for $2.95 I sure don't mind paying for extra fish/shrimp. I just hope the extra portion is as much as the portion that the rolls originally come with. I originally was going to give Sumo Roll 4 stars but decided to give them 5 because they are using the FIVESTARS customer loyalty program which rewards you with a free roll after you accumulate certain amount of points. read more
