This is a review that is about six months late. I live in SoCal and was up for a few days for work. One of my chain rings came loose and, because I didn't have tools, my one window for a ride was closing quickly. I stopped by to see if there were anything they could do for me and was ready to pay for the service. One of the service guys got things fixed for me and, other than shaming me for a dirty drive chain, I was up and running and got my ride in. Special shout outs to: Ryan Brandon Chris All had very welcoming personalities and made the visit to the shop very pleasant. I've been back since on a follow up trip, and this is my NorCal recommendation for anyone looking for help with their bike. ***Added bonus - Burlingame Avenue is right down the road! read more

I recently did a "level 2" annual tune-up service - pretty disappointed since it says specifically on their site, "removal of drive train and inspection" and "ultrasonic cleaning". After I picked up my bike and inspected, I clearly see gunk and dust on the drivetrain still. I suspect my drivetrain wasn't even removed. The last annual service I did with them had a spotless drivetrain after the ultrasonic. Might be time to consider a new spot for service. I'd still consider purchasing a bike from them though, no problems there. EDIT: added 1 additional star, the bicycle rides well, and felt like 2 stars was not reflective of that read more

This review is for their customer service! I was in the market for a road bike and I was visiting every bike shop on the Peninsula. I have owned several Trek bicycles, so I thought I would check out this bike shop. I can't remember the name of the person who helped me out, but he was fantastic. They really listened to me and what I was looking for. They recommended a bike and I even went on a demo ride. I really liked the bike, but promised myself I wouldn't buy on Day 1 of bike shopping. They provided me a quote and even followed up to see if I needed any assistance finding a bike. It was fantastic customer service!!! read more

I just had my dream bike built by the fantastic crew at Summit Bicycles in Burlingame. It was a long-awaited and much anticipated decision to pull the trigger, but I committed and already knew ahead of time that I wanted to have this built here. Reason being about 5 years ago they did a great job upgrading and maintaining my retired Scott Addict. I came into the store with a blank slate only knowing I wanted the Pinarello Grevil as my frame, and that I wanted to recycle the groupset from my Scott to save on cost. Chris helped me from the beginning to the end with all of my concerns, such as any compatibility issues, challenges with sourcing parts, and also very helpful upgrades I wanted to consider with full transparency and all the important details. Thanks again Chris for your help and patience with me and updating me throughout the process. Incredible communication, customer service, and overall professionalism. I've been riding this indoors on the Wahoo Kickr Core and since the wheels arrived, I look forward to putting many miles on it. Hey, I'll most likely be back next year to upgrade my groupset. Took my bike in for a safety services and inspection, and tire true for 149. First day out on the bike and the rear break falls off when riding. Bring back told bike is defective. They determin a washer is missing and add the washer to the break clincher stand. Asked about the wheel tru and Then told they don't true the wheel for 149 services. 36" above the guys head on the description board above it says "true wheels". Manager slams his hands on the table and says they will change that today. I come back a 3rd time and the wheel isn't trued! They take again and I'm told the wheel is fixed. We shall see. Glad my wife wasn't going down a hill. read more

My 13 year old son is working on improving his bike himself. He did extensive research looking for parts and was able to find a good deal from this establishment. Understandably he's on a tight budget. I ordered it for him and a day later I get cancelation notice just saying my cc was refunded, no call, no reasoning. I immediately called and left a message, wrote an email back and then called again after the weekend. Finally, they tell me that it wasn't in stock any longer, so they canceled it. No explanation why I wasn't contacted with an explanation or offer to help, help finding another in the price range or a courtesy discount on the full price item. I understand mistakes are made with inventory on hand, but this was handled about as poorly as it could have. I see why reviews for this business are spotty at best. read more

TLDR: Customer services = 0/5 stars; Completed work = 2/5 stars. I brought in my bike for a comprehensive tune, new handlebar grip tape, and new aero bars to be installed. I also brought in 40mm risers for the aero bars to rest on top of. The next day, I received a text that the work was complete and the bike was ready to be picked up. GREAT! I came in the following day as I really wanted to go for a ride. I noticed however that the risers were installed upside down (mounted on the under side of the bar) and as such, there was no rise in the handlebars. I pointed out the mistake and a staff member apologized, then complained that she had spent the day fixing all the mistakes her co-workers had made. I thought, "Mistakes happen. It's cool." I was disappointed as I knew my ride wasn't going to happen, but hey, I'll survive. The staff asked me "when do you need the bike?" I said "I want to go for a ride on Thursday (in 4 days)." She said that was fine and that the bike would be done by Wednesday so that I could ride Thursday, and that I would get a text notifying me as such. Wednesday came. No text. Thursday came. No text. No ride. Friday came. No text. Saturday came. No text. Now, I 'm really frustrated as they've had my bike for over a week. I end up calling them on Saturday asking about my bike. I was told that "the work was done and the bike was ready to be picked up." I however did not trust this information, so I asked the person to go and check to make sure the risers have been re-installed correctly so that no more of my time would be wasted (akin to me typing this right now). 3 minutes pass and he gets back on the phone. He says that the risers ARE STILL UPSIDE DOWN! But "we will work on that right now for you. It will be done in 15 minutes." I waited a week for 15 minutes of work. AND, I had to be the one to tell Summit to do the work the 15 minutes of work. This makes me feel like SUPER unappreciated as a customer who dropped $473 after all was said and done. I was literally ignored, promises were broken, and I missed out on three rides. PS: I actually bought the bike from Summit. Costed over $3k. They didn't seem to care about that either. read more

Summit has been great, this review is overdue. I came by in June/July 2023 to buy two bikes, a Santa Cruz Bullit and Bronson. I am very specific about my needs as well as my cousin and Anthony and Chris are awesome to work with. Anthony had been able to work with me and get the particular needs squared away and handled the logistical supply chain issues with very reasonable options. Chris was able to help make sure everything was coming in and making sure things were to what our preferences were. Believe he is back at the Los Gatos shop now. They've also worked on a full rebuild of a Fox 36 Factory fork brought in for service and if you buy a bike from them there is a discount to services. read more

I purchased a bicycle helmet that claimed to fit 66cm heads. It arrived and it doesn't fit. I attempted to return the item, and was told I could not return it since I bought it "ON SALE" and that I would have to sell it or myself. This is baloney and a terrible way to do business. AVOID. read more

BEWARE of their Service 6/16/24 dropped of wheel for a broken spoke, paid $140 for spoke and wheel true. Was told wheel would be ready on 6/20/24. Called 6/21 and was told the work hasn't been done and might be done next week. 6/25 received a text saying work was done and picked up the wheel. Brought the wheel home and put it on the bike to realize they replaced the spoke and didn't true the wheel. Went back on 6/28 to show the wheel was not true and was promised it would be fixed by 7/2 or 7/3 and I said no I'll pick it up on 7/5. Called on 7/5 and the work was not done, got a text on 7/10 the work was preformed. Picked up the wheel and it is still not true and I am waiting for an email that I sent 7/10 to get answered. read more

They offer the best bikes at reasonable prices -- and sometimes fantastic prices! And they stand behind what they sell, providing free regular maintenance and going to bat for me when the manufacturer just couldn't seem to get it right. I've never been to the store, but I was out for a ride yesterday south on Hwy 1 and I got a flat with no spare and no cell service (I know I should have had a spare). I waited along the highway for about 20 minutes to see if I saw anyone I knew pass. Someone turned around and asked if I needed help. I told him I needed a ride back to Pescadero. He loaded me up and took me right where I needed. He told me he works for Summit Bikes Burlingame. His name is Ryan and he was my angel yesterday morning. Whether you are a cycling professional or a beginner, you'll always find proper information at the Summit Cycles in Burlingame. It has everything you need, from riding accessories, new bikes for kids and adults, to maintenance and repair parts. On my last two visits, for example I upgraded my break pads, break cable, and handle grips. On every visit they had the required parts in stock. They even helped with some minor troubleshooting and offered tools to complete the repairs. Finally, their prices are very reasonable -- on par with Amazon prices without the wait. In particular, I want to thank the Los Gatos-based gent (sporting a cool salt&pepper mustache) who took the extra care over the break system of my Schwinn cruiser and recommended parts and tools to complete the repair. I've been coming here for the past few years and have noticed a major degradation in service. I've been a loyal customer and the behavior has not been reciprocated. I came in last week an noticed the shop including the service area is run by kids. I had a service done that they typical do for free (done for free at every bike store) and was charged for it, and not o my that they did it wrong also. I ended up fixing it myself. DO not come here to service your bike there are plenty of places better around the area and who have staff that are honest and hard working unlike this place read more

Stopped by to pick up a few accessories for a new bike. Anthony helped me out and took the time to help me find exactly what I needed. Ended up not liking the computer I bought so took it back and got the Garmin 1040 which fit my needs much better. Summit has a great selection of accessories. Horrible experience in terms of customer service . Over 2 months of waiting and still couldn't get the bike . Instead they had a wrong model brought to the store and after that there was no effort in following up to get the correct model as per the order that had been placed. Had to stop by at their store more than a few times to follow up but all in vain (as they don't answer the call most of the times) . After all the inconvenience, they didn't regret anything about it and just agreed to refund the amount. What a waste of time !!! Customers are not satisfied by getting their refunds, they are looking forward to having the bike as per their expectations and within the anticipated time period . If that is not possible , would expect the customer service to be apologetic and grant some alternate offers / perks to make up for it . read more

Our order experience lacked professional phone support, communication, and delivery follow-up. We purchased the bikes and requested delivery anytime after 4-5 days since we were out of town. We didn't receive any shipping information and called to see if the bikes would arrive by Memorial Weekend (10 days after purchase). We were given three different shipping dates. Although we were not in a rush, we needed to know if we needed to stay in town to sign for the delivery. The online number never answered, and when we called a physical store for information, one employee hung up on us. Eventually, we received a label update from UPS, and the bikes shipped 4 days later. We called again as we planned to leave town after the holiday. Please communicate if delivery dates changes. Train your staff to answer questions or pass the phone to someone who can. We never heard back from a manager despite emails and calls. Overall, I would never recommend any friend to buy online. read more

I've never written a yelp review before and I haven't felt the need to until now. I always take negative reviews like this with a grain of salt, but in this case I hope you take my advice and DON'T SUPPORT THIS PLACE. After what seemed like a pleasant interaction, one of the workers who had helped me choose new tires and tubes nicely offered to quickly throw the tubes on the tires, saying "it'll take me less than 10 minutes." Little did we know what seemed to be a casual offer (he mentioned no extra cost and emphasized how easily he could do it) turned out to cost $60 for "labor," a job I could easily have done myself. Had they charged $15, $20, even $30 I would have been surprised but not had a problem. But $60 with no heads up and after implying he would do it as a favor is just deceiving and wrong. I explained my surprise after seeing the receipt and spoke to the manager who sadly had no sympathy whatsoever and very rudely said "that's how it is, have a good day." Bottom line: the workers come across as very friendly and offer to quickly help you out. What they don't tell you is they're seriously overcharging you for a very easy task, and when you bring it up with the manager he shows his true colors (a greedy businessman). Please do yourself a favor and listen to the other reviews critiquing their customer service. I went in to the place feeling positive and left feeling like I had been scammed. Clearly their goal is to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. It's too bad as I liked the place and had a pleasant experience up until seeing the bill. Unfortunately the management is pretty dishonest and lacks the basic human element you would hope for. There's other places around town I'll be going next time I need a repair done, I hope you follow that train of thought. read more

This shop overtightened my stem and crushed my carbon steerer and will not accept responsibility for it. They suggested that I crushed it. I hadn't even asked them to work on my stem - only a shimano recall inspection. They hadn't even put the safety clip back on the crank arm. Also in 2020, they charged me for work not done. After a crash they recommended I have a safety check to remove the fork for inspection. I was skeptical of their work so when I got the bike back, I removed the fork for inspection myself and saw 3 years worth of dirt immediately drop out. They never removed the fork. They were supposed to change the derailleur hanger as well but when I got it back, the hanger didn't look new. They seemed to have just done some reindexing. A week later I discovered the real reason why my shifting was not right. The cable was damaged from the crash when the shifter was knocked in. I will never go back to this shop. As another review pointed out, they got scratches on their bike. On two occassions, I received my bike back with chips on the carbon brake track. I wasn't going to be petty and complain about those. But I now understand why they offer the life time tune up. The more you bring in your bike, the sooner you will need a new one. read more

Wow just wow. I strongly suggest to seek service and bike sales elsewhere. On Sunday I called this particular store to inquire about checking on a dropper seatpost that according to the manufacturer needed to get bled. The guy behind the phone was "yeah we have some time to look at it". Mind you I'm located in SF so this was out of the way for me to get here. So I get there and roll through to the service department and there was this guy Mike who was supposedly the service manager and met me at the other side of the counter. He then proceeded to just have this blank stare without even an acknowledgement of my presence. I was like ok you're a weirdo but shrugged it off and started the conversation about my seatpost. Well it went downhill from there with him just looking at the seatpost and determining that it needed a complete overhaul and he wouldn't even take a look at it despite me explaining to him that I was given the okay to come down and for them to check it out. I told him that the manufacturer stated to me all that was needed was a bleed and I wanted them to do that which would have taken no longer than a few minutes to do. But he was adamant about not looking at my bike as far as even telling me that "I wouldn't even approve same day service requests during the summertime". Well that's not what your guy behind the phone said to me and I wasted a good chunk of my day for nothing. At that point I was already peeved and was like ok this isn't cool. I wasted my time and came down here for nothing and this "Service Manager", Mike was so not empathetic to my situation nor did he not want to do anything for me at that point. He said the earliest he could look at it would be the following Friday which was in 5 days. I then asked to speak to the general manager of the store and be proceeds to say that "he's not in but, I (as in Mike) am his equivalent". Now there's no ignoring his holier than thou attitude and his blatant air of superiority having triumphantly defended his stance on looking at my bike at that point. He then proceeds to put his grubby hands on my bike as if he owned it (in a very disrespectful way) and was standing there with my bike like a total a$$! I was then "I'll take my bike thank you very much" and proceeded to grab by bike from him and that was when he acted so taken aback and shocked that I did such a thing to him (mind you that this is my bike, not his...) that he said "oh wow, really?.....don't come back in here again". Dude, if that's the way you're going to treat me, there's no need for me to come there ever again. All I wanted for you was to look at my seatpost and if it was broken I would've spent money at your store to buy another one instead of spending to fix it. I also didn't have any issue with paying for the diagnostic but you didn't even let me get that far. I understand that there could have been miscommunication with your store personnel and things happen but for you to completely diregard my situation and not be the least bit empathetic really shows me that you shouldn't be in a customer service position much less a customer service manager. And as the saying goes, there are plenty of other independent bike shops in the area that are much more suited and deserving of my hard earned money. No need to waste my time and money on shops that don't care. Yes enjoy the influx of business, money, and profits that the pandemic has given you and the bike industry, but mind you it won't last forever. Oh and by the way, I was able to get the proper tools and do the bleed myself (which took literally minutes). Suffice to say it fixed the problem as the manufacturer recommended and it did not need a comprehensive rebuild as Mike the service manager of Summit Bikes Burlingame, had incorrectly concluded.... read more

Defective bike - be careful. We purchased a new Trek bike for our 13-year-old son from Summit Bicycles Burlingame location last spring. After just a few times riding the bike, our risk-adverse son took the bike out to ride with some friends on the streets of Burlingame, the rear tire suddenly became detached from the bike, causing our son to come flying off and in the ER an hour later. Thank goodness he was wearing a helmet (cracked into a dozen pieces) as his injuries could have been much much worse. When bringing this serious issue to the attention of the bike shop, we were essentially told that this could not have been a defective bike and instead a user issue. After getting the runaround from store employees, we emailed with the owner, and he agreed to replace the bike - which was irreparable per their own service shop - at their cost. We were not happy with this response and called Trek customer service directly. After briefly explaining what happened, the horrified agent immediately recognized the problem and offered to replace the bike and helmet at their expense noting that Trek would work this out with Summit. I have been in the manufacturing business for 25 years and recognize that there are infrequent times where a product fails. The best and most appropriate way for Summit to have dealt with this issue was to empathetically replace the bike and helmet at no charge as the point of retail. Instead, they took a very different and unacceptable approach. While I commend Trek corporate for stepping in to replace the bike, we purchased the bike from Summit and they did not deliver on their promise that a neighborhood bike shop should. We have purchased several bikes from this store before but will never do so again. As we expect that Summit may attempt to dispute the facts in response to this post, we'd ask you to be mindful of the motivations behind each party. Ours is simply to protect children from being injured from defective bikes. read more

SHADY SUMMIT. UNETHICAL BUSINESS. When you walk into Summit, they'll be quick to tell you about their 30-day full refund return policy if you are unhappy for any reason. DON'T FALL FOR IT. Based on this lure, I ordered a bike and waited a few days for the right size to arrive. This is not uncommon given they can't hold inventory for every model/components/size. After test riding the bike around the store for 5 minutes, I decided that it wasn't for me and I initiated the return. Low and behold I was then informed that I needed to read the "fine print" and this bike didn't qualify for the 30-day refund because they needed to order in the right size. I would have NEVER purchased this bike if I thought there was anything but a full refund policy like I was told. I was mislead and got caught in a Summit bait-and-switch. Summit feels more like a used car lot rather than a nice bike shop. Here's the verbatim text I got from Summit management (their caps, not mine): "NO. The refund has been issued and is final. If you read under 'Special Orders' they are FINAL SALE. Normally that would have been the case. No Refund." No thank you Summit. If you're looking for better service (check out Cognition in San Mateo, 4.5 stars; Belmont Bikes with 4.5 stars; and Chain Reaction for Trek with 4.5 stars on Yelp). Here you can find better value options like Giant bikes. In 2023, Bikeradar.com rates Giant #1 for both Aero and Gravel bikes. On a positive note, Anthony was excellent! read more

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I was absolutely ripped off and it is not ok. I tried to reach out to the shop to discuss this first, but I never received a call or email back so here goes my review I guess. I initially took my bike in on Thursday September 21st to have my tires replaced with tubeless. The employee told me it would be done by the next morning, which was fantastic because I have a Century coming up this week so when he said it would be done within 24 hours I was extremely grateful. Several days go by and I do not receive a phone call or text. On Monday September 26th I call the store and they have not started the service yet. I state that I was originally promised a 24 hour turn around time and that if it couldn't be done no worries I'll just pick the bike up and have my Canyon technician complete the service. They put me on hold, come back and say they will finish it that day. At this point I was understanding, I get it that things happen but a phone call with an update would have been nice so I could plan otherwise, and this resulted in me losing a weekend of valuable training time. I go and pick up the bike a few hours later, only to find that my originally quoted cost went from $305.13 to $404.65. This was alarming, as I was never contacted with an update in the price. They stated something about the Muc Off sealant not working so they had to use a different kind at a different cost. Over $400 for two tubeless wheels installed is insane, and when I contacted my usual bike tech they could not believe what I was charged and said I was ripped off big time. Like I said, I get that things come up, but when they do, you MUST contact the customer to update them. They did not update me about the extended turn around time OR the price change. If I would have known this was going to cost me $400, I would have declined service and went elsewhere. I wanted to like this shop as it is local and I want to support, but I feel robbed and taken advantage of. The cherry on top: my brand new bike had new scratches on my wheels/frame and several grease smudges all over the frame.This is a brand new bike that cost me an arm and a leg, that is not okay. read more

This store service is very Awful rediculously and totally NOT recommended! Here is my terrible experience: I went there for flat tire only at the beginning. I was pretty sure there was ONLY one problem: flat tire, and the rest is 100% working very well. The staff took over my bike for further examination per his suggested. After short look, the staff gave me a quote and suggested to have other items repaired together, such as old chain replacement, dust removal, tube replaced, wheel polished...etc, which is like grocery shopping list! Moreover this Repaire list costs $360! Of course I didn't agree to pay all this list. Instead I just had flat tire repaired at the end. When I walked out the store and was ready to ride, I found out that the bike break, Hub Gear, Derailleur and other items were all broken!! It's so obvious that the staff broke those items behind me and asked me to pay extra service! SHAMED on THEM! Please share this comments to all Burlingame , San Mateo or peninsula bikers! read more
