We had the best experience here. We had no idea what to do with our backyard. We had limited space and haven't a clue about trees/plants. We went to summerwinds three times. Rich and Matthew were lifesavers. They are both super knowledgeable! Matthew could tell I was overwhelmed and within minutes of listening to our concerns he put together a great plan for us. The picture is a planter he designed for us, we're obsessed!! Also, they aren't pushy or salesy here, like at other nurseries. They really just want to help and educate. I used to love this nursery until this morning. They promote on their receipts and website about their plant guarantee. So, today I brought back a bunch of plants that had died. Each in its own bag for easy identification and the receipt. I was met with contempt. The look on the cashier's face when I walked up to the counter! As I was going through the receipt and the bags of dead plants, she snapped at me! I was going to shop to replace everything, but then I heard her making a nasty remark about me to her co-worker. I am truly sad to say I will no longer shop here. read more

This location has horrible service! I came in around 4:30ish after work, the sign states they close at 5:30, however, they were all ready to leave at 5!!! I asked for help with a large pot, the cashier told me to wait by the pots and someone will come... No one came! They were all congregated up front ready to leave. When I went back to the register and told her, she just giggled and said "no one came?"... that's all... no "I'm sorry", no "I'll get someone"... just giggles. They have an awesome service...a plant coach! We built a new house last year and created a backyard with lots of flowering plants but they have been struggling. Jeff came to our house and spent 90 minutes with me discussing all the various plants in our yard, the watering and pruning schedules, fertilizers, soil analysis and generally how to help them thrive. The service includes a $50 gift card towards fertilizer or anything else you want to buy at SummerWinds...it's a great deal and Jeff is a fountain of knowledge! I would do this again in a heartbeat!! My experience with SummerWinds has been fantastic! They actually still believe in customer service which seems to be gone everywhere else. I will be a customer for life!! read more

This is one of my favorite nurseries and the people that work here are extremely friendly and most helpful. Been coming here for over a decade and it is very close to my house. We could almost walk here but then who gets to carry the stuff back home. LOL! Usually come here for vegetable, herbs and spicy pepper plants and they have a nice selection. If they are out of something it will typically be coming on the next delivery truck. They also have a large variety of other types of plants, shrubs, cactus and fruit trees. This week we picked out two different types of Basil, some Thyme, Dill, Oregano and several spicy Pepper plants. Jalapenos, Serranos, Poblanos, Caribbean Reds, Ghost, and a bunch of hybrid versions. Some of them are already budding and I'm excited see them smiling at me. The people who work here are always ready to answer my questions. Even my stupid questions are promptly answered and they always have a variety of solutions for my dilemmas. Nice! There are a few employees that have been working here forever. One of them is the Great Wizard Jimmy. He is like a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and could possibly be NASA material. He is so happy and smart and you will normally find a group of customers following him around for his Guru like wisdom. The prices here are a little higher than the big box stores but they are very reasonable considering you are getting a better bang for the buck. Just need to come up with some new fresh salsa and stir fry recipes to enjoy my tasty yummies. There is nothing like the heat of some fresh peppers right out of the garden. Also wondering if those stupid ground squirrels in my backyard can take the heat this year. They sure liked my tomatoes last year. I went here yesterday ready to buy a truck bed full of plants. I tried asking a question to a few of their attendants in the nursery as they obviously saw and ignored me as they walked by. When I was finally able to get someone to actually talk to me, he just rudely gestured to one side and said oh I don't think we have those plants here. This is after I had called ahead specifically for the plants before driving 30 minutes over there. I will never come back to any of their locations again! What a waste of time. I found Valley Verde nursery and Green Goddess Nursery nearby which had the plans I needed for better pricing and much better service. read more

Was putting together a garden for my mom's new house and decided to try this place. The selection was good and the service and knowledge in the BACK area where the plants are was excellent. Bought about $400 worth of plants but returned half after finding similar items at Home Depot for half of the price. Loss of a star for the moody cashier and loss of a star for lack of a will call area. After the initial $400 purchase on a Saturday afternoon, I asked if my items could be set aside (including a lemon tree) for the landscaper to pick up early Monday morning and was told they have no such service. The attendant then proceeded to cram a dozen items in my car. When I asked him not to hurt the plants, I was told that their plants are very hearty and if a branch were to break in my car, I shouldn't worry since it would grow back quickly. It wasn't the answer I was looking for. It hurts to say this as I love to support local but at the same time, local needs to understand the competition and be competitive. My recommendation is to try to get as much possible at the nearby big box store and fill in with a few special items from local nurseries. read more

Absolutely love this place, so glad I found this place as they are the only place that actually sells bonsai pots!! The staff is knowledgeable ( if someone doesn't know something they find someone that does) the bonsai soil is mixed beautifully and you can't beat the prices, even the pots are priced great. My only wish is they sell Akadama so I can stop buying it from amazon and shop locally for it. Other than that love it! read more

Ok I've been told to check this summerwinds out vs the one I normally go to. So while in the area I did. I wish I hadn't I got there in a great mood with money to spend... left frustrated, ignored, and just plain disrespected. When I got there I got a cart as I had a bunch of things on my list to get. But several times I saw something I wanted to check out I either couldn't get my cart down the aisle (inside or out) because plants or products, or carts full of new product were blocking the way or one employee (tall bald, overweight man) working with a couple would take up the whole aisle... not letting anyone by... even without a cart I couldn't get by. This same employee/couple combination blocked my way at least 3 times, even though I would go to a different part of the yard to be away from them. Another issue was most of the items I wanted didn't have prices. Finally I gave up and started to leave empty handed. But remembered I needed something from inside. I picked up the two items and noticed a product I'd been looking for years for (I used to get this locally and use this product and for the last 2 years couldn't find it except online). They only had 1 bag and no price. I picked it up knowing I used to get it for about $20 a 50 lb bag. However at checkout it rang up for $69+. I told the person at the checkout that had to be incorrect could she check. She said the price was right... not wanting to check with someone. I told her it shouldn't cost more that $25. She looked at my with a smear on her face and actually told me that if I could find it cheaper elsewhere then go there. I declined getting it and left with my two items that I paid for. Upon getting home I looked the product up online and was happy to see Lowe's has the exact same item locally for $23.98 Why summerwinds thinks they can charge OVER 3x and get away with it I don't know but I'm not falling for it. The checkout staff make me never want to go there again and since I'm from the west valley I probably never will. The management really need to have a customer service class for ALL their staff that may be in contact with any clients. read more

This is my favorite nursery as they have a consistent selection of the desert adapted plants that I need. I need plants in 1-gallon containers as our soil is too hard to dig big holes for planting. I also look for dwarf varieties so I don't have to prune plants that grow too big for my small yard. The store is attractive and they keep the layout consistent so I can easily find what I need. I noticed that they also have a huge selection of glazed ceramic pots in many colors. I always stop here first for all my Landscaping needs. read more

With a constant collection of dead houseplants (don't let friends water when you are out of town), Summer Winds has been a frequent stop for replacements Their houseplants are strong and healthy and there is a nice selection with appropriate information on where they will do best. They also carry some colorful pottery. Unfortunately, I have also become a cactus addict and cannot control myself from heading outside to look at prickly things. One or two always leap into my cart and insist I take them home with me. I also appreciate the helpful knowledge of the staff. I have received pointers and suggestions but never a hard sell on anything. It is comforting to know that an employee would rather have me successful and happy then sell me a plant that was inappropriate for my full sun location. Each fall I buy their beautiful annuals and look forward to the chrysanthemums that seem to brighten my yard for months. read more

Love this place! Plants are probably pricier than buying from somewhere like Kroger, Home Depot or Lowe's, but the quality and selection is worth it. As an Arizona resident, it can be hard to get the exact plant you want because many places can't ship here due to agricultural regulations. So much variety here, I do not feel the need to look online for a very long time. If you are looking for something affordable, they have many different sizes of plants that range in price. Their 2in pot plants are absolutely adorable and I plan to go back and buy those as cute little gifts for other house plant collectors read more

Used to buy all of my vegetable starts here but over the years the prices have gone way up. I remember paying 3.65 for a 6 pack of starts and now over $5? . Single pot plants 4 inch for $6? . Purchased two shrubs from summer winds and within two weeks they were both dead. A guy told me to bring them back in and they would replace them. I took them in, however, I didn't have a receipt and they didn't have me in the system. I understand that they didn't have proof that I purchased it, but the indifference from the cashier was very dismissive and she seemed annoyed. I don't expect anything for free because I didn't have a receipt. I was hoping for at least some kind of helpfulness in the sense of let's find you something that works better. Unfortunately, I didn't get that. i've always avoided going to Moon Valley, because it's a big conglomerate. but I was in the area so I went there. They had the same shrubs for about the same price and when I told them how the ones I got from summer winds died, they gave me a discount and also pointed me to some fertilizer that would help them survive. My business will go to Moon Valley going forward because they seem to actually want to help me. read more

At SummerWinds nursery this weekend, we were asked by a masked worker to leave the premises because we were not wearing masks. They have a very small sign near the front, partially covered by a tree, which requests consumers wear masks. It was a very clean and organized nursery. But, to be frank, the selection was limited and the prices were no better than freedom loving nurseries (like the one across the street). I respect people have different views and reactions to COVID-19, but I'm not comfortable shopping anywhere which *requires* I wear a face covering. Shoes? Yes. Shirt? Yes. A mask? No. I know the mask requirement won't bother some people, and to those people, I say give the place a try if you like. But, this review is for anyone like me, who question the value of the the "social comfort" masks, and particularly don't care for businesses like this dictating what I wear on my own face. I won't return to the business... ever. Even after their restrictions are lifted. There are plenty of reasonable businesses to whom I'll be much happier to give my money. read more

I've been to just about all the Summerwinds in the greater Phoenix area, and this one in particular is an honest middle of the road for me. I really want to give 3.5 stars, but since half-stars aren't allowed, I will call it 3-stars for now. When I hop nurseries in my off time, I'm typically looking for succulents and some desert plants, i.e. things that will thrive in our ridiculous climate out here. In that regard, I am rarely disappointed by their selection. There's often a plethora of choices when it comes to agave, one of my weaknesses, and also smaller, ground cover succulents and aloes. What's more, I often find new stuff cropping up, rather than the same old plants being re-stocked. They also tend to have some odd-ball things now and then, like variegated A. murpheyi, some A. tequilana 'sunrise' and I recently picked up some A. parryi v. hauchucensis as well as a very nice A. havardiana, both for what I consider to be very competitive prices. They've also had a couple selections of A. ovatifolia, including the ubiquitous 'Vanzie' clone (not named on the tag, but obvious from the growth habit). In terms of layout, this place is somewhat typical of the SummerWinds chain, part indoors (mainly the supplies, chemicals, tools and so on) and part outdoor retail area. A good portion of it is heavily shaded from above, so you won't fry while perusing perennials, hedge plants, ground cover or roses. They also have a good selection of pottery here and a few odd bits of statuary, but most of that is uncovered and out in the blazing sun. The only other thing that is really out in full sun is most of the agave and just about all the cacti. If you're looking for either of those, go when there's some cloud cover or go early in the day, otherwise the experience is not pleasant, especially in the warmer months. I understand these guys need a lot of sun, but I dare say they are getting a bit too much, even for these desert plants. That actually brings me to another point. You need to be careful with your agave purchases at this location, at least as of right now. I have found numerous plants with signs of what is almost assuredly agave mite infestation, and it seems to be spreading through the open stock, now that we're in the summer months when they are most active. Much of the A. americana seems to be showing tell-tale tract marks, lesions and staining near the base of the leaves. Additionally, there's a nice batch of A. bovicornuta that recently came in, almost all of them showing signs of infestation. They have since spread it to the A. salmiana directly adjacent to them, which is an absolute shame as those were well grown plants when they originally arrived some time ago. Treatment is expensive (look up the price on Forbid-4F!), so I understand why they are hesitant to treat with an effective miticide, but why not at least quarantine the infested plants? No customer with their heard screwed on straight would buy them, and if you're offering a warranty, it's a claim waiting to happen. Far better to send it back to the distributor or just buy some miticide, treat them out back and put them back in circulation when they're clean. That I see it spreading between plants betrays the fact that no treatment has been done, or at least not an effective one. It's a shame, and gives me pause when making purchase decisions. I really try to limit myself to only buying clean looking plants with no symptoms, displayed far from the obviously sick agave. A customer shouldn't have triage your plants like that, and this is the primary reason I give them 3 stars instead of 4. That said, if you're not looking for agave, I have not noticed any other issues. And, again, there are some gems to be found here that are free and clear of any mites. I've picked up numerous things, and none of them (knock on wood) have come back to bite me with a mite infestation cropping up. For anyone with a collection or planning to add several varieties of agave to their landscape, please be do your homework on agave mite and know what to watch for, before making a purchase here. read more

This nursery was filled with plants! Some plants were a tad bit expensive, a tiny tiny pot was 9.99. I was surprised with how many plants they had to choose from. I'm usually only going to plant nursery's for their indoor plants and was very pleased to find a really good section. If you're not afraid to spend a little more on plants I'd say come here. read more

I am so happy I decided to check out Summer Winds on a whim. I've been on the hunt for a nanouk and really didn't think they'd have one but was driving by and thought I'd check just in case... I looked around the house plant section and didn't see anything so was about to leave when I saw a staff member and decided to ask her (even though I was fully expecting her to say they didn't have the plant). Turns out, not only did she know exactly the plant I was talking about, she knew exactly where it was hanging in the nursery and walked me straight to it! I am so, so happy! It is absolutely flourishing at home and is sprouting new growth everywhere in just 4 days - all I've done is place it by a sunny window. Such a healthy plant! I joined their Rewards program and will definitely be back. I didn't have a chance to look at everything that day but they seem to have a wide variety of plants, soil, plant food, flower pots - can't wait to go back when I have more time! First, let me say that I have bought lots and lots of small plants here and have been very happy with the quality and the service. I am very good with plants and citrus trees... However, my nightmare came when I purchased a $100.00 dwarf lemon tree in 3/13. It was a beautiful tree with 38 lemons growing when I bought it. All the lemons fell off. I went back to my salesperson, who told me that was normal. "No worries",he said," it will come back in the Fall and you will have a beautiful fruit-bearing tree next year". Well, despite my nursing it, it didn't come back as promised. It is sickly and nearly dead. So, I took pictures that clearly showed Summer Winds stores tags on this sick tree's puny trunk and I took them to show my salesperson. I didn't want a refund but just wanted a healthy tree. He tells me to DIG UP the tree, ( rent a truck, I guess) and bring it back with my receipt from 11 months earlier. Please note the photo of my sick tree in the photo section. I have had nothing but excellent service at this nursery. I've been going here for 15+ years and have never been let down. Their selection is amazing and I feel calm and relaxed while strolling around checking everything out. If I've ever had a question, there is always someone who is willing to help and assist. They have a great selection of everything from water plants to citrus trees to cactus to herbs to shade trees to annuals. I had been disappointed that the one plant I had been looking for was out of stock and they immediately offered to take my name and number and call me when they arrived back in stock. They called within a week and asked how many I would like set aside for me. When I showed up, they were there waiting for me with no issues or problems. I was there 30 minutes too early one morning and they ended up opening up early and let me in. They didn't have to do that, but I certainly appreciated it... I have been to the bigger nursery across the street and I don't like the customer service I've received there, so I am going to stay with Summer Winds! read more

If they had negative stars I would give it to Joe, the manager. I negotiated a price for a large purchase of plants. They guarantee them and I lost about 8. I brought them back for an exchange. He advised me that the original discount would not apply to the exchange. He also told me that "people buy more plants and drop a lot more money than I did every day" and he has not seen that discount given to them. I provided a receipt, he acknowledged the discount, and he didn't care. Told me that he would not honor my original agreement. He was extremely rude, dismissive and unreasonable. read more

I purchased a tree, planting accessories AND arranged delivery over the phone. On the morning of delivery, I received a call from Bill, letting me know he was on his way. I have been shopping at Summer Winds for years and years and I should have written a review sooner. I love the staff here; they are knowledgeable and friendly. The prices are great and the store is always clean and well-stocked. The flower and trees are healthy and beautiful. These things have always been true, but now, I have an additional reason to love this place: my 17 year-old son got his first job here and he is learning first-hand what it feels to work somewhere where the employees are like a big family. His boss is kind and compassionate. They are very understanding about "school comes first" and they don't force a ridiculous schedule on him. He likes all his coworkers and really enjoys the atmosphere/work environment. I'm so grateful his first work experience is such a positive one!
