If you're in the mood for authentic, decently priced, tasty Turkish food, Sultan Kebab should be at the top of your list. The ambience is comfortable and rustic, away from the bustle of the downtown mall. The staff is incredibly friendly and very helpful in recommending dishes from the large menu. Because of its popularity, I would advise coming either later in the evening (~7:30) or later in the afternoon to get the full experience. Below is an overview of what I ordered: COMBO INEGÖL KÖFTE & LAMB: On the pricer side, but delicious. The Kofte (a ground beef and veal link) was spicy, hearty, and well seasoned. The lamb was equally tender, moist, and seared nicely. There is a huge tendency in this type of cuisine to mask the flavors with oil and sauces, but the meats stood up really well and packed a ton of flavor even without any accompaniment. The other components of the dish were good, but felt a bit disconnected. The rice underneath soaked the drippings from the meat, but didn't carry any seasoning at all and tasted a bit bland. The bread on the side was cut up into pieces-too small and delicate to pick up the meat or salad. Given the acidic balsamic dressing on the Turkish salad and the salty, creamy hummus, there was a bit of a missed opportunity here. But overall, each component had really nice, developed flavors. TURKISH HOT POMEGRANATE TEA: This tea was very good, but for $2 was a bit pricey for the size of the drink. The pomegranate flavor really came out and helped cut through the heartiness of the entree. BAKLAVA: The dessert had a great, flaky phyllo dough and a sweet, crunchy filling. The baklava was buttery and crispy, but still light. It came out a bit cold, but with a complex texture and rich flavor. They ran out of frozen yogurt and used ice cream substitute, which didn't really do much for me. Overall, I think that Sultan Kebab is a great option for anyone in the market for authentic Turkish food in Charlottesville. Definitely will be coming back in the future! read more

I consider Sultan Kebab a hidden gem in Charlottesville when you can get a large portion of delicious food at an affordable price! Slightly off the mall, it is a great location walking distance from the downtown concert venues, shops, and parking garages. I tried the Iskender Kebab platter (grilled beef and lamb with a red sauce.) I was not a huge fan of the yogurt sauce, which was too thin of a consistency and bled into the side salad and bread. I loved the Izmir Kofte platter (beef meatballs), which featured hummus instead of the yogurt sauce. Considering that platters are served with salad, rice, and bread, the portions are more than enough to take home for a second meal. The baba ghanoush and dolma are amazing and don't skip the baklava for dessert! I came in on a busy Saturday night and did not have to wait long for a table. The staff was attentive and our food came out quickly. The interior of the restaurant could benefit from an update to create a more cozy, upscale vibe. read more

It is worth trying especially when the tomato sauce mixes with the yogurt, it is an unbelievable flavor. The crunchiness ofthe pita bread pieces adds another dimension. Lastly, you must get the kunefe. This traditional dessert popular in Turkey and the Middle East will change your life. I can't even think of an American dish that I can compare to. Iskender kebab was not even close to what it's supposed to be. Lamb kebab was not too bad, but I would not go there to eat it again. Kunefe was fine. We, as a Turkish family, did not really like the food. Especially, when we compare the food with other Turkish restaurants in the U.S... My boyfriend and I came here for lunch. We started with the Halloumi cheese and Turkish coffee with Turkish Delights. We loved the grilled cheese, but the coffee was very grainy and was very thick from the bottom. For food, we both ordered the chicken shish kebob platter and both of our chicken was EXTREMELY stringy and we could barely chew onto it. We told the owner about it and he was kind enough to bring us a platter of lamb for my boyfriend (I was not in the mood to try anything different after that point). He didn't think the lamb was any better anyways. I loved the rice and hummus that came with the platter so I just ate that. Service was good as we were the only ones there. Will I return here again? Sultan Kebab is off of 29, a bit further from UVA than most restaurants. My friend and I arrived on a weekday and there were more people than we expected, alot of the tables were full! There seems to be only one server, but he was still good about asking us for our orders pretty quickly. We ordered the lamb kebab and beef kebab, which both come with rice, salad, hummus, and bread. It's definitely a good amount for the price ($10-12), and I like that there's a lot of variety on each plate. The food itself was typical kebabs, nothing super special to be honest, but still good! Overall, I'd probably not come here again if I was craving kebabs, just because it's kind of out of the way. read more

Such a gem in Charlottesville - we need more places like this! Came with a big group and they were super accommodating. Food came out quickly too! I got the Iskender platter - delicious marinated beef and lamb over rice, yogurt, and salad. It was amazing - HUGE portions too. My husband got the lamb shish kebab platter - and I had some ordering envy. Generous cuts of amazingly flavored lamb. We visited Sultan Kebab while visiting with friends for Thanksgiving weekend, and enjoyed fabulous food as authentic as my last trip to Istanbul! Seven of us enjoyed different dishes and all of us were pleased. The food was flavorful, fresh and just delicious. It awakened my Middle Eastern genes, and made every cell in my body happy! We enjoyed Lamajun, Lamb shish kebab sandwich, the Adana Kebab Sandwiches, Adana platter, the chicken shish kebab platter, the Aegean salad with Adana and the Izmir Kofte platter....and apple tea, of course. I've eaten here a few times now and its never disappointed me. Everything I've had here is delicious, from the bread to the sides. Last time I had the chicken and lamb combination platter, it was fantastic and a great portion. The sucuk, which I did not expect to like, was also delicious, both on the sandwich and as a platter. The service has also been great every time, our server on Sunday took his time to explain the menu and made some great recommendations. The Turkish coffee is also amazing, great way to end any meal. Love this place. My office is nearby so I'm there for lunch once a week. Food is great - so flavorful and plenty of it. Cool space and friendly, efficient staff. I came to visit Monticello and stopped here for lunch. Im from Northern Va but this place is so good! Truly authentic Turkish food. There are so many turkish restaurants in northern Va but none of them tasted like this one. The food here tasted so fresh and it was super healthy, not oily like other places. The salad was clean and the lettuce fresh unlike other places where they serve me dried up, dead lettuce leafs. Customer service was very good as well, and didnt feel rushed at all. For our first meal in Charlottesville, we tried Sultan Kabob, a place our local friends had heard about but not tried yet. We were happy to find that it was very reasonably priced, and the interior was clean and modern. I especially liked the murals on both main walls of the place and the wide wall of windows. The server was kind and polite, and we were waited on by many others who brought out food and refilled drinks throughout our stay. I did note that they didn't offer us a second beer at any point, but that may have been due to the fact they were closing soon. The food was delicious! We got the grilled haloumi cheese to start, which was a small portion, but so savory and tasty. Fiancé and friend's fiancé both got the lamb and beef sausage combo platter, which came with rice, salad, hummus and pita. My friend got a platter with thinly sliced beef and rice and salad. I got the Mediterranean salad with beef meatballs on top. A solid choice, as the salad was good but the dressing was subtle, so the meat provided a good kick to the dish. For dessert, we got baklava which came with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream - it was a wonderful addition to the flavor of the baklava's pistachio, honey and phyllo dough. I would recommend this place for a nice low key dinner out, especially if you don't want to get swept up in the hubbub of the downtown mall. It was super cute, and definitely had great food. This restaurant is the kind of ethnic food gem you hope to stumble upon -- its a quiet, unassuming little place tucked away in a strip mall with perfectly spiced and presented simply delicious food. And now for the food: my hubs (Zahira-slang for husband) and I ordered two Turkish coffees with the hope that they would breathe life into us. The unassuming, thick-enough-to-stand-a-spoon-in liquid delivered. We ordered the vegetarian platters and enjoyed delicious kisir (aka tabouleh), hummus, homemade bread, dolmas (stuffed grape leaves), basmati rice, and babaghanouj. Hubs also got the lentil soup, which was served in mismatched floral, corelle dishes like I was in some Auntie's house. It was perfectly spiced, rich without being heavy, and terribly comforting. The food was tasty, flavorful, and balanced in that homecooked sort of way that leaves you longing to become a regular. All in all, the food was fresh and loved the ambiance of the place. However, the food was nothing special. The standouts were actually the salad, tabbouleh, white bean salad, and hummus sides that came with our meals. The lamb kebab was dry and the adana was a bit flavorless (not enough spice). The shrimp pita sandwich was a HUGE disappointment. Don't order this. I was expecting sauteed shrimp in spices, but it was all mixed up in cheese and had a strange texture. It was yuck. I love this little place. It's a few blocks from my flat, which is downright dangerous for my wallet. A few useful details: the meat here is halal, and gluten-free diners are easily accommodated -- just tell the waiter to hold the pita and go for extra rice with a platter, and you're good to go. I've been gluten-free for years and had no problems with this at all. The chicken kebab is excellent, all of their lamb is juicy and tender, and their hummus ranks amongst my favourites. I love their Turkish tea. The place is small enough to be intimate, and the Turkish music videos in the background are hilarious and charming. We actually really enjoy them. The staff is great, service is reasonably quick and very gracious. Everything here is clean, the place is run with a lot of love, and it's a gem for Charlottesville. Wonderful Turkish food! I was mistakenly thinking that based on "Kebab" in the name, it would be a quick, tasty but greasy kebab shop. I was completely wrong! It's a quiet and clean restaurant with nice decorations from Turkey. We started by having hot apple tea which was SO delicious! Light and not overly sweet, just perfect. We then had a delicious plate of baba ganoush with warm pita bread. Again - perfect. I had a doner kebab sandwich which had very good quality lettuce, tomato and onion on fresh bread. The meat was lean but beautifully spiced and tasty. We also had the baklava plate for dessert which was scrumptious. Their pistachio baklava is, hands down, the best baklava I've ever had in my life, and that's saying something. This is one of my favorite restaurants. They just moved to a new spot just off the downtown mall. My daughter and I have been waiting for them to re-open. They have an awesome vegetarian plate. It's a sample platter with 7-8 different dishes. You can get it vegan also. The kisir is sooo good! You also get hummus, baba ghanoush, aegean salad, beans, rice, dolma, potatoes and homemade bread. We also had the grilled Halloumi cheese app and it tastes great. I've also had the lentil soup and that's good too. The new location is bigger and I like the look inside.
