Sullivan's is as good as it gets around here. I had heard good things about it, so my wife and I gave it a shot this weekend.
Walking in for the first time, I was really impressed by the overall atmosphere; it is uber-clean with high ceilings and a classic decor that still feels decidedly modern. It feels casual and upscale at the same time, so I'd be equally comfortable coming here for lunch or a night on the town (such as it is). Actually, one of the reasons we never go to Sky Cinemas is there isn't (or wasn't) a nice restaurant like this in town.
We showed up early (5:30ish) and were seated promptly, but the place filled up and people were waiting within half an hour, so be prepared for a wait on a weekend. We had really good service throughout the evening: frequent drink refills, the food came out in a timely fashion, and we didn't have to wait for the check.
The menu is interesting. I was expecting a steakhouse for some reason (did someone tell me that?), but Sullivan's has a nice mix of cuisines. I saw steaks of various cuts, chicken, seafood, sandwiches, as well as a bit of Italian fare. You don't usually see steakhouses with bruschetta, so I'm not sure how to categorize this restaurant.
As far as the food goes, maybe we got lucky, but everything we had was great. We started with the artichoke and spinach dip and it was seriously awesome, although don't try to split it more than two ways; it isn't that big. Next came the house salads and bread. The bread was warm baguette pieces, which were really good. I'm a bread guy, so this was a big hit for me. The salads were as good as house salads get: fresh, crisp ingredients with generous portions. The ranch dressing was really good as well. My only complaint was that the salad was presented in this bowl that was JUST big enough to hold the salad, so it was impossible to stir in the toppings that were arranged on top. While pretty, it was less than practical. You'll probably think I'm weird, but I swear I almost asked for a bigger bowl to dump my salad into.
Next came the entrees. I had the special, which was all-you-can-eat cod with two sides for $11. Now, just to get this off my chest, I'm not really a fish eater. Maybe twice a year I order fish. I don't know what possessed me, but I did it, and I was really glad I did. The cod was lightly battered and deep-fried, but it didn't taste greasy or heavy (or fishy!) at all. It was nice and light. Perfectly cooked, and the tarter sauce was great too. I was annoyed they didn't have malt vinegar though. Seriously? That seems like an obvious condiment for battered fish. My other side (after the salad) was an order of fries. They are little shoe-string fries that turned out to be pretty good. My wife had the Cajun Alfredo pasta ($10), and that was really good too, and she got a massive amount of it as well. It was nice and spicy without being too spicy.
All in all, this is an awesome place and I'm happy to have it so close to home. I finally don't have to drive to Toledo for something decent. It reminds me of restaurants I've been to in cities like Chicago or Boston, although this was a heck of a lot cheaper. The atmosphere is great, the food is great, and the service was great too. If every visit is as good as this one, I'll be a happy camper. read more
