We decided to stop here on our trip to Atlanta. There were billboards everywhere that said it was at the best barbecue in the South. Since I have a deep love for barbecue it was probably a wise decision to stop here. It turns out that my whole family hated this place! We ordered the corn, cornbread, barbecue grilled chicken, and of course ribs. The food was terrible, all except the cornbread and corn. The only upside of this place was the friendly staff, the southern hospitality, and getting to feed some goats. At least I found a way to waste some food and it was good that the goats got fed. I know now that if I ever want to come back here I'll take the Waffle House instead of this place in a heartbeat! Goodbye forever Sugar's Ribs. I know I'm not coming back here ever again! read more

We got a huge to go order for a party. The waitress carefully lovingly hand packed our enormous order so that it arrived hot and safe. The ribs were amazing and tender and just the right amount of smoke. The sauces were so diverse and delicious and totally enhanced the brisket, sausage and ribs. The grilled okra was festive and beautiful.. coleslaw was great and we loved the cornbread muffins too. The service was attentive, they gave us cabbage to feed the goats, and we love some sugars! Stopped in for some BBQ on the drive down from Chicago and Sugar's was a great "welcome home to the South". We saw the signs along the highway and it sounded so good that we were counting down the miles. Once we got into Chattanooga, I was ready to ditch the plan if it involved navigating the downtown area, but I am very happy to report that Sugar's is VERY easy to get to from the interstate. Its located right up on top of the hill as the road curves through the downtown so you cannot miss it, and what is really cool is that it's located UP ON THE HILL with a GREAT view of the city! You place your order at the counter from many possible combinations. I was really pleased to see lamb on the menu but I could not pass up my standard of all Southern BBQ- pork. Maybe next time through town I'll get the lamb. The pork was tender, slightly smoky and VERY juicy! A perfect score! The sides where tasty too, but I always miss fries when there is no fryer. Chips are just not the same with my Q. The vinegar slaw was yummy and we LOVED the grilled onions, but the pinto beans were not to my taste- a bit too firm for me. They have beer on tap and it bottles so that's a plus too. Hopefully I'll be ready for Q on my next time through town! read more

This is a very nice establishment. Military discount is offered but you have to be in uniform :( I got the half spare ribs for $15 it does not come with sauce, but it is available for you. They also ask if you want a bone for your pet. I thought that was nice a gesture. read more

The BBQ is very good. The pulled pork is nice and moist, to the point that you don't really need sauce. The lamb is deliciously seasoned, and I highly recommend the lamb mini q, a slider that's just the right size to taste. They do chicken legs, but you have to get in early bc they're very popular. For sides, I recommend the grilled okra. They give you a good portion, and it's grilled to a nice tenderness without being burned. The one drawback is that Sugars is pricy. Other than that, it's a solid choice for BBQ in Chattanooga. read more

Was headed for some BBq place that showed up on Garmin only to get there and find the place closed. So started driving and saw a banner for Sugar's Ribs and figured why not. We stop at Sugar Ribs on our way back home from enjoying our vacation in Chattanooga.. The atmosphere of this place is comforting and the view from the balcony is so beautiful, it make us not want to leave the mountains!.. We order ribs and half chicken and the food was delicious along with the grilled jalapeño, Mac n cheese and crispy potatoes.. After our meal the goats was a great treat because we get to feed them and pet them. The service was wonderful and waitress was so friendly and delightful!.. This place is absolutely wonderful! First off, you get 15% off when you sit at the bar! Um, sure... I can do that! But truly the BBQ is outstanding. Not only is the shear quantity staggering, the quality of the meat as well as the awesome BBQ sauces makes for an incredible experience. Finally! Awesome BBQ! Spare ribs: I am not usually a fan because they are seldom prepared properly but these guys have nailed it. Brisket: Thick smoke ring with a perfect mouth feel. Do not miss this option. Sides: Grilled okra and corn an absolute necessity but the fried okra is sheer perfection! Thinly sliced with nice heat. Amazing! My boyfriend and I have passed this place a couple times on our way to the Atlanta area, and finally decided to go in for dinner during a day trip to Chattanooga. We had to spend nearly 10 minutes oohing over the menu before we could decide what we wanted. We opted for Mini-Q's (kid sized sandwiches on yeast rolls) and a couple sides apiece. The brisket was tender and juicy, and some of the best 'I've had outside of Texas. The sausage was a little charred, but still delicious. The lamb was AMAZING, and I may just get a portion of that next time. The sides we tried were corn on the cob (slathered in melted butter), grilled cornbread, and vinegar slaw. All were fantastic. Loved the assortment of different sauces. My favorite was probably the "Hot Lips' sauce. Reasonably priced, and fantastic service. Great atmosphere. We ate on the patio overlooking the scenery (depsite the humidity). All in all, this is now on the list of standard stopping points between Nashville and Atlanta. read more

Nothing was bad, nothing was great. The view from the side of Missionary Ridge is very scenic and the staff was very polite. I had the pork butt, collard greens, mac-n-cheese, and a side salad. The pork had ok flavor and was cut in large chunks rather than pulled. There was an assortment of bbq sauces on the table all of which were thin and full of vinegar. The greens had great texture and ok flavor but nothing spectacular. The mac-n-cheese was great and the only item that was above average. The side salad consisted of a quartered head of iceberg lettuce, (not seperated, just a giant chunk of 1/4 of a head of lettuce) with a ranch-bbq blend salad dressing. Overall, it was ok, and a little expensive. I would go back once more just to try the ribs. read more

Sugars used to be my go to BBQ in Chattanooga. I stop in often when I drive through but probably not in the future. I've had mediocre ribs and more recently brisket that was chopped up and dry. The price for blah brisket, a small serving of vinegar slaw and 3 fried jalapeños with a drink $24?!? Look I get it the goats were interesting but the BBQ is what Sugars used to be about. My guess is Sugars has sold out for cheap labor and high prices. Lots of other BBQ options in town. My suggestion go elsewhere. read more

Very, very, very good! I almost missed my flight out of Chattanooga because my best friend and I decided to be reckless and hit one more BBQ spot before I left town so, as you can see, we're kinda serious about our ribs. Sugar's only fault was coming later in our trip after we had already tasted Daddyz in Atlanta. Seriously, I think very few can compete with the intense care that Daddyz puts into their meat and side dishes. Sugar's made a great effort, though, and they deserve every one of the four stars I give it. The way I tasted their BBQ even though we were running late was drive-by style. I sat in the car while my best friend ran inside and picked up some of everything that I had ordered on the phone while we were driving and then I had the entire way from the restaurant to the airport to have a go at it. By the time I rolled out of the car, I had sauce and grease running all over me, but I was grinning like a fool. The meat was thoroughly smoky and decadently fatty and even though I washed up before boarding, I could taste a little bit of South in my mouth as I flew back West and I'm sure I was smiling through my naps. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to have some more on my next visit :) read more

Awesome Tennessee style BBQ! The brisket was melt in your mouth good and the grilled okra is a must try!! Being from the South, I am used to seeing okra fried, but when it's grilled it becomes a thing of beauty! And I mean...when you're about half way through an 11 hour drive, what does any self respecting person want? Of course, BBQ! We are big BBQ fans, so when we started seeing signs for Sugar's on the highway we had our doubts about how good it could REALLY be. Speaking of beauty, their BBQ was good, but the view alone was worth the stop. Nothing beats having a BBQ sandwich on their porch overlooking Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge. Anytime I see voted best restaurant on a billboard I'm a sceptic. As I feared the award was from the local paper which you have to pay for add space to be eligible for the accolades. I had an undercooked brisket and a side of grilled okra and onions it truly wasn't worth the $20.00 price tag (which is notable the cost of a room at the hotel next door). I was passing through Chattanooga and saw the billboards proclaiming Sugar's as the town's best BBQ. Had the pulled pork plate with pinto beans and I'm sorry to say that it was just decent. The price and the selection of sauces were nice, but the meat and beans were a bit bland. Maybe the ribs are better, but they were a little too rich for my blood. The restaurant has a covered patio seating area that is a balcony overlooking the hills, which was a big plus. I'm not really sure what this has to do with BBQ, other than the fact that it made us wonder if we were just deceived into eating pulled goat. ha. In conclusion, I haven't been to any other Chattanooga BBQ places, so I can't judge them against the local competition. This place gives a great appearance of clearly straddling the fence between former greatness and total mediocrity. I was drawn in by the billboards and being a great fan of BBQ I felt I had to give TN BBQ a taste. I feel a good gauge of BBQ is either the brisket or pulled pork sandwich. Being from Texas I figured I would be fair and not ask Sugar's to show what they can do with beef and opted for the pork instead. Bad idea... First of all I walked straight up to the counter in the middle of lunch rush, no line at all. I placed my order quickly and the gal was friendly. But it took around 10 minutes to get my 1 sandwich with no sides. What I got was a pulled pork sandwich. But my guess is that it probably took two tractors to pull this pork. The pork was not tender at all, was probably a couple days old, and had huge chunks of fat and skin in place of meat. Now I know that pork is fat, but to get a mouth full of toasted hamburger bun and pig skin/fat, well that ain't the most appetizing thing in the world. When you go to this place you will find a BBQ joint that has a beautiful view, an apparent history of success, and a dangerous threat of falling the way of so many other local joints that can't just run on reputation alone. read more

BBQ in this country is unique to different regions so you generally know what you are eating by your location. But I have to say that Sugars Ribs had a flavor of their own. Amazing BBQ with an incredible view. The only thing better was my server Lisa. Fantastic service, very attentive with a passion to keep me happy. This restaurant is very lucky to have such s great employee. The manager Omar came out early in my meal to make sure we were happy and at the end of the meal, thanked me for coming in to eat there.
