My partners islander coworker suggested this place for brunch, so we had to come try with a couple of friends. Expect islander vibes; chill atmosphere, great company and good food. Fried dough platter - some nice freshly fried bread. My favour topping is probably the guava butter, only wished there was a bit more guava flavour. Oxtail grilled cheese - oxtail was so friggin good would recommend and get again.. Banana foster waffles - waffles were not crispy, but the bananas were godly. Perfectly charred. The syrup feels rum infused, a very nice touch. Would recommend and get again. Lobster poutine - grilled lobster felt over cooked, a bit on the rubbery side. The poutine was very good, the fries were cubed potatoes fried to extra crispy. Potatoes and gravy were seasoned nicely. Would not get this dish again, but may get a side of fries. Shrimp n grits - Don't really know what to expect going I to this. Grits have an interesting texture, almost like a creamy sago. Nice to try, but wouldnt get again. Jerk pork Benny - a bit biased here since I don't like Benny's. This is a new Benny topping I haven't had before. Flavour was decent, but the potatoes were nice and crispy just like the poutine. Nice to try. Overall would come back again for the waffles and oxtail grilled cheese.

This is truly a great establishment, I really like how quaint it is and cozy as well. It is daily prices because the food is truly delicious!! We had the jerk chicken pasta which was really good. As well as the Creole jambalaya which was my personal favourite!! Make sure when you go to reserve a table for more efficiency!!

Looking forward to a good night

I visited on a Friday evening. Great vibes live DJ and Santa going around giving out goodies. Server was friendly owners came and introduced themselves. We ordered drinks, appetizers and mains. This is where is went south 10 minutes after getting our main one of the owners came to our table told us we were over our time limit and the next reservations was here. (Ummm okay,) 2 min later they put to go containers on our table and the bill. I was annoyed asked the table beside us if they were told to leave and they said yes. I asked to speak with an owner. I explained that we were really enjoying ourselves and we didn't appreciate the delivery of them dismissing us there was no time limit mentioned to us or any warnings. She then informed us that it was in the email when we made the reservation and then told the waiter she should have told us, the table beside us had a different server and they were never told about a time limit either. Food 4/5 Service 3/5 - I left feeling dismissed completely killed the vibe which is why I'm leaving my review at a 3. Delivery is key. Appetizers Spinach four cheese dip- 4/5 super rich with flavour, but bland could use a hint of spice. Plantain chips were delicious Fish cakes - 5/5 my first time having fish cakes they were delicious but the mango habanero sauce it came with is what made it perfect shrimp tacos - 4/5 it comes with two tacos we did wish that it came with three it was tasty the shrimp are grilled Mains Jerk pork sandwich - 4/5 you get a generous amount of meat. Seasoned well, slightly salty but the coleslaw helped to balance it out. Fries were thin I honestly didn't really get to eat any before I was dismissed Jerk Chicken Pasta - 3/5 it was a generous portion, meat was cooked properly the plate came out hot but honestly the food itself the pasta and the chicken weren't hot we did find that the white sauce that they use was bland and we needed to add some type of sauce to it because it was just bland basic Drinks All drinks were very pretty aesthetically Dutty wine- 4/5 it was tasty, it tasted like a sangria Wray and ting - 5/5 perfect balance of alcohol and drink you can taste the wray & nephew but it wasn't overpowering Raspberry mojito - 3/5 it was okay, not what we were expecting

Braised Oxtail Bowl

SugarKane isn't fast food or home-cooked style Caribbean food. It positions itself as higher end (as it's price point suggests), and thankfully delivers on this expectation. Got a few things for takeout: - Jerk Chicken Bowl: Great rub - not overly hot but tastefully spicy. Chicken itself was well cooked, and they gave 4 sizeable pieces. Rice was properly dry, which made the sauce pop even more. Would have liked more of the plump plantains, peas and slaw. - Oxtail Bowl: Similar to the jerk chicken bowl, but this had oxtail and a whole lot of gravy. Oxtail was braised well (tender and tasty). A bit too heavy on the gravy for me, even if it tasted pretty good. - Uncle Ben's Saltfish Cake: The only disappointing part of the meal. It was seasoned really well, but the dough/covering was just too thick. Overall an enjoyable experience at SugarKane. A bit pricier than other Caribbean places I've been to but definitely think it's worth a visit.

Please make a reservation before you show up we almost didn't get sitted. If you are ever in this area, please check out this restaurant. The ambiance was amazing. The music and the vibes were out of this world. The place was packed with people. The service was spantacular. They were very tentative, nice, friendly, and helpful. They are all-inclusive. The food was wonderful. I would start with dessert first because the portions are huge. The bread pudding was my favorite.

The food was out of this world; very flavorful and juicy. Portions are just right for the price. Trust, you will leave very satisfied. The service was a little slow but we were told they were under staffed. With a good group of friends and good music we didn't notice too much. The DJ gave this place an upbeat vibe. Plus who doesn't want to dance when they're eating good food? I'll wait...

About $30 for these 3 apps. A bit pricey based on the portion size.

Very nice venue. We came in on a Thursday evening for apps. Tried the fish cakes, wings and corn. Overall very tasty and I like the heat of the fish cakes. I would have liked it to be a bit less doughy with more fish. I will try this place again soon when I have a bigger appetite for a main meal. I will note that I thought it was a bit pricey for the portion size. For example the corn was $8 for a single cob cut into two and rolled with the spices, sauce and coconut bits. Nonetheless will be back again to try more items. Love the fact that a nice Caribbean restaurant is in the neighbourhood.

To be honest, overall food and atmosphere was pretty ok and the service was good as well but overall value wasn't there. Appetizer was again pretty interesting but the the portion size was pretty small for the price range and entree especially jambalaya did not taste like jambalaya at all... flavor concentration was lacking and tasted quite simple perhaps because it had too much sausage (that would have overpowered). Drink was also pretty bad I tried two mojitos and both of them were pretty thin in flavor. Overall I wanted to give 3.5 stars but perhaps little more toward 3 stars overall. Just as fair warning for the patio diner, there were about 3 bees or wasps at all time during our entire dinner.

SugarKane is a wonderful Afro-Caribbean spot on the Danforth. The food & drinks are flavourful and very filling! The fried Bake in the Jerk Chicken Sandwich is soft with a perfectly crisp exterior & their house-made pepper sauce is incredible. The owners and staff are so attentive & caring. They go above and beyond any expectations to provide great service! Can't wait to come back & try everything on the menu.

Jerk Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo with added Grilled Jerk Shrimps (3pcs)

Our experience at Sugarkane was unlike any other. Food&Taste: We ordered two dishes. The traditional Jerk Chicken Bowl (smoked, spicy, tender jerk chicken served on top of a bed of rice with a side of plantains and slaw) and the Jerk Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo (spicer than I imagined but the in a good way. The fettuccine was infused in the jerk chicken spice). Definitely coming back to the fettuccine Alfredo and the ginger beer duo! Service&Atmosphere: We came here on Saturday with no resos prior and to our surprise got seated immediately at the bar. The restaurant was themed - tropical of course. Live rub/jazz renditions of popular 90s and 2000s music bopping throughout the night. It seemed like the kitchen crew and bartender were really enjoying their time there as a handful were singing their hearts out to some iconic ballads. Value: The internet's raving reviews for Sugarkane did do it justice. The menu is fairly priced for the quantity and quality. If you're ever in the east end, this place is a must. Pro-tip, their birthday song rendition is pretty good.

I showed up here with two friends without a reservation and by pure luck we got a table at the back with the kitchen directly behind us. You can feel the lively atmosphere in the nicely decorated venue...plus a DJ is setting up now to add to the experience! My drink tonight will be the Sugarkane Mojitos Guava Raspberry $12. Pair my drink with my dinner which was the Sugarkane Beef Burger$16 and shredded oxtail $5; home-made burger with lettuce, tomato, red onion, Swiss cheese & a ginger-lime aioli, on a brioche bun. The dish is served with a choice of fries, grilled vegetables, or Plantains so I chose the latter. Betty was our great server. The food was flavourful and excellent; the best burger I have ever tasted in my life! We came here because of word of mouth and it did not disappoint!

After that, I really sold it to my wife and she was excited. We initially arrived at Chubby's and there was only bar seating available. As luck would have it, it was raining that Wednesday evening . I called just after 6:30 pm to see if we needed a reservation and the hostess said we didn't. We get there not 30 minutes later and there is only bar seating. Hearing that, my wife was highly disappointed and so was I. Quit frankly, I was going to go next door to Cafe Renee. But Zac was not having that. He checked a couple of times and found us a table. I was so relieved and my wife continued her enthusiasm. Zac showed us to our table and I swear I attempted to pay for accommodating us and he refused. The lovely Valentina was our server and she was delightful because she understood pace and flow. We ordered the Saltfish Fritters which were a great introduction to the restaurant. I had multiple Buffalo Soldier cocktails and my wife had multiple Rum Punches. We then ordered Jerk Chicken and Jerk Shrimp with rice and peas as our meal. Both were delicious. I also had a serving of plantains, and they were the best plantains I had ever eaten. I was amazed at how light the crunch was on the outside. A skill in itself! Finally, we had the Bread Pudding for dessert. Again...perfection. Zac was phenomenal and I appreciated his effort. I opted for the brunch buffet so that I could sample a few dishes. Having my paternal side of the family from Jamaica had already exposed me to lot of Jamaican staples, so I find it a better route to try several menu items rather than a fixed menu. I had brown stew chicken, ackee, saltfish, rundown, callalou, plantains, and a little bit of a lot else. My water glass stayed full and used plates were removed as soon as I went for more food. This was one of the first times that a cultural restaurant in the heart of downtown had authenticity in the dishes. It became apparent when I passed the kitchen and heard patois. Not that patois was an indication of genuine flavor, given some cultural restaurants will compromise flavor for certain palates, but an elder speaking it is an elder who will serve you food as it should taste.

We tried a variety of dishes to varying degrees of enjoyment. Let's start with the good - we enjoyed the saltfish fritters, the Jamaican patties, the beef roti, and the fried bananas the most. They were balanced and very flavorful. The beef roti specifically looked like a giant burrito, but the beef within was so tender and well seasoned. We also really enjoyed the banana fritters which tasted like deep fried banana bread. As for the plates missing the mark - The jerk chicken was pretty tender but our two pieces were also pretty charred so we had to remove most of the skin where most of the rub would have been. Additionally, the goat curry and the oxtail were borderline inedible especially after we ran out of coleslaw which was its saving grace to making each bite palatable. It was so salty otherwise! There were also a lot of small bone fragments to work through on each dish. It wasn't necessarily that these dishes tasted bad but it was just impossible to enjoy due to the salt content. The staff at Simone's was very kind though. I could also tell that they made everything fresh and at order so I can appreciate the effort even though it didn't quite meet my expectations.

The Chicken Roti side dish was huge! It is twice as high as any Roti I've ever had before! The chicken inside was succulent. The Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo was amazing. You get two sides: we chose rice & peas and coleslaw, two quintessential sides for a Jamaican meal. I feared the Jerk Chicken would be too spicy, but the restaurant wanted to cater to many tastes, so it made it medium spicy (which I could handle). I was told you can add their Real Jerk Hot Sauce yourself or ask the cook to make it extra spicy during the cooking process. The Oxtail was tasty. We also ordered the Escovitch Fish, another popular Caribbean dish. The whole fish is fried, then marinated in a sauce of vinegar, spices, onions, carrots, and peppers. The taste was excellent, and the meat flakes off the bone easily. This dish also come with two sides: we chose coleslaw and steamed vegetables, which came in their own separate bowls.
