My wife and I hired Sugaree to make two wedding cakes. We booked them four months ahead of the wedding and ordered a tiered cake and a sheet cake, both with raspberry filling. In the weeks leading up to the wedding, we tried multiple times to contact the shop so we could set a delivery time on the wedding day for the cakes. It was very hard to get anyone from the shop to reply to our messages but we were finally able to speak to someone 5 days before our big day. On the day of the wedding, they delivered two cakes that looked really good on the outside. When we finally did the cake cutting, we discovered that they'd delivered two different cakes: one with chocolate filling and one with raspberry. Both cakes were dry. Considering what we paid for these cakes, the difficulty making contact with anyone from the shop, and the utterly unforgivable mistake of getting the order wrong (not to mention that the cakes were dry), we regret ordering from them for what was a really important event. They may shine most of the time but you'd never know it from the experience we had with them. read more

Oh. My. God! How did I live here this long and NOT know about this place!?? My boss orders quiches from here and says they are great but baby, let me tell you- this place has a coconut cake that is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Apparently they wholesale the cake to Olive + Oak and this cake is by the slice on their menu. It is heavenly. Now I am a baker and a true cake snob but there is a reason why I thankfully got the last slice when I went in there on Saturday afternoon! It was moist, flavorful and I am already planning to order a whole cake for the holidays because this HAS to be on my Christmas dessert table! I am not much of a pie person but hey are known for their pies, so give them a try if you love pie! I also had the ginger cookie and the toffee shortbread and both were equally delish! My dad went all out and purchased pumpkin, apple, cherry and pecan pies for thanksgiving. They were incredible. Not a flaw in any of them. I'm not much of a pie person usually but these had me sneaking a few slices home in Tupperware. The pecan pie is the best I have ever had and I've had a lot through the years. Truly a bight of heaven. The pumpkin was also exceptional. I highly recommend Sugaree! They recently went through a change in ownership but I can confirm they're better than ever!! read more

I'm from California and this was my first time here. My cousin raved about this place pies. Instead of a pie I got one ooey gooey butter cookie. This delicious powder cookie was so good. I can't believe it's taken me this long to try Sugaree...it's been on my list for a while and they were closed for an extended period and then open only with limited hours but BETTER LATE THAN NEVER! They have a great online ordering system but you have to preorder a week ahead of time for the upcoming weekend for pick-up. Never fear, if you aren't sure what you want or forget to preorder in time they have a big selection in the shop for walk-in customers too. I'm not sure you can go wrong with anything in here, and I love that you can purchase a whole pie/cake OR just a slice if you're looking for a quality dessert that's single-serving. The peanut butter pie, holy MOLY is amazing. Also am obsessed with the opera cake with the subtle coffee and rich chocolate notes, and the coconut chiffon cake was to die for. Momo tarts were another favorite in our house, as are all the cookies we tried. Their individual cheesecakes are also fantastic and you cannot beat the price for the quality and size of the desserts. Note the line to get in on a Sat morning at opening time can be long. I was 4th in line outside and waited 20 min to get in. The brioche is delicious. Quiche is delicious. The custom cakes are nicely priced and good. Cookies are mediocre. There is a weekly menu posted Sunday online where you can place your order for pickup the following Friday/Saturday. I ordered a celebration cake for my husband's birthday, the order was confirmed, and my cake was wrong at pickup. I was extremely disappointed and the cake was actually way too sweet with too much icing for my liking. Almost everyone left some on the plate. Pretty disappointing considering it was a $30 cake. The pastries I got were so amazing! I got a variety of cookies and a couple of the little momo tartes. The momo tartes were definitely my favorite. My only complaint is the service made was not welcoming on the day I went and makes me nervous to return. On my first visit, I simply asked for recommendations and was met with a short "it's all personal preference". And that was that. I was hoping to learn what some popular choices are as the pastry choices were overwhelming to me. With her answer, I feel unwelcomed and rushed when I was the only person in the store. A few days ago I picked up some Quiche for me and my wife to eat. It was the Primavera (veggie) Quiche and it was amazing. We had breakfast for dinner and this filled us up and tasted delicious. I came here yesterday because I needed a pie for the Friendsgiving social I was headed to that night. I thought I had it easy because I had pie and they're cheap I thought. I looked at a bunch of places and their pies were like $30-$40 and I'm sort of good with money (what some of y'all call "cheap"). This place has $18 pies, I got the chocolate pecan pie (their pie selection changes weekly, you can check their website for this week's pie) and I'm gonna tell you that was easily one of the best pies I've ever had. I don't know if it's better than than $30-$40 pies that all the other bakeries have and as long as I'm in charge of bringing pies, I'll never know. But I do know that this pie was really dang good and nobody at the party would've known I got a good deal on my pie. Also, as a bonus. I was only in the place for maybe 3 minutes tops but the staff seems incredibly fun and helpful from my brief conversation with them. Was very excited to try Sugaree. The shop is hard to catch as they are only open Friday and Saturday. The shop is well laid out, with everything for sale laid out right as you enter. I had gotten Samoas, a "Momo" pie and a lemon blueberry pie. The Samoas were delicious- the flavor was great, and they were made to perfection. The momo pie, which I had originally thought would be similar to the Momofuku Crack Pie, was good but different than the namesake. The momo pie at Sugaree was more brown sugar heavy, but still great. The big problem was the lemon blueberry pie. I had noticed some earlier reviews had problems with their cake/pie having an aftertaste- this pie had a very strong metallic taste to it. We had tried using different utensils, but to no avail. While Sugaree is a nice spot, the pie we got was disappointing. I'm not sure why it would taste that way, but hope others do not have that experience. read more

It was a sad day for me today. I've been going to Sugaree for almost 20 years. I've been a loyal customer and have recommended Sugaree to family and friends for years. This won't be happening anymore. My complaint is twofold. Firstly, I've noticed that several of the items that I've been purchasing for years are smaller in size, but increased in price. The Celebration cake is a perfect example. It used to be $35 and it's now $55. Same cake, so why the huge jump in price? Their New York crumb cake and the brioche loaves are about half the size they were until recently. Again, price increase. I was in conversation with the woman helping me, about these issues. Of course, she denied that things were smaller. She's new so perhaps she wasn't around when they were larger. I can't even count the times I've bought the crumb cake and brioche loaves over the years. They are decidedly smaller! After a few minutes of my questions, she proceeded to tell me that "if you don't like it, you're free to go elsewhere." She's correct, and I will be going elsewhere. When I pointed out that this was rude and no way to treat a longtime customer, she replied, "I'm not being rude, all you've done is complain." Again, inappropriate response. When I said at the beginning of this post that I was sad, I meant it. After almost 20 years of enjoying the deliciousness of Sugaree, and, literally thousands of dollars spent, I'm moving on. We were met by Pat at the door. She was taking a meeting with a client outside. She was so sweet and welcoming. We tried the chocolate and NY style cheesecake. Both are fabulous but very different. The NY cheesecake was just like Sunday Brunch at the Polaris in Nashville when I first tasted this dessert with my Grandmother showing off her precocious 6 year-old grandson after brunch with her friends. The chocolate is cocoa textured three ways and reminds me of an afternoon treat in Dresden with our German friends that know the best chocolate in every town in Europe. We had the gorgeous chocolate chip cookies. They kept my bored 15 yo happy for almost 18 hours until our urban hike the next day. They should come with a cup of cold milk because you will need one. I also got a toffee cookie. It is perfect companion for a hot Earl Grey tea during a brief afternoon break in the exploration of the Art Museum or Botanical Gardens. Finally, I got a small Chocolate Cream Pie. This pie made me call my mom. It made me miss her hospitality and her many pies shared in love over the last 50 years. I stopped by on a whim. The smells that hit you are wonderful! I knew I was in the right place for fresh, baked goods. Their display cases were full of a variety of pies and cakes and treats. My problem was trying to figure out what to get. Once I did that then I noticed a cooler! Wow! Cheescake and other products! I ended up taking a sampling home. The cheesecake, raspberry cheesecake, Apply Crumb pie, Blackberry Cobbler, and one other thing I don't recall. All were wonderful. The cheesecakes were heavy, NY style. Very filling and rich. The Crumb pie was great when slightly warmed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Cobbler was also good when warmed up. I will have to go back and get the name of the small pie-like pastry! YES!!!! FINALLY, I have discovered the best pie in the world. I've been searching, and I've gotten close (mostly in my own kitchen), but this is IT. I have seen little ads for Sugaree in Sauce, and didn't think much of it, but then finally I bookmarked it and decided to stop by to check it out. As others have said, it's only open on Friday and Saturday. I've gone both days and have always been helped right away. It's super easy to get here from 40 and Hampton, or from 44. They always have many yummy fruit pies, as well as some cream pies and other specialties, like peanut butter pie. The selections change every week, though there are some that tend to be there more often. You can get any pie in the standard size or in a smaller 1-2 person serving size. They also have quiche and pot pies sometimes. Whoopie pies, cookies, tarts, cobbler and more have also been spotted. The apple crumb pie leaves me without words. This is pie nirvana. The thing that takes it above and beyond, besides the delicious crumb topping, is that they must do something like put huge deposits of cinnamon on the crust, because it's SO good. I'm usually one to leave the crust, but this pie won't let me leave one morsel on my plate. I've had the cookies and cobbler, which were good, but the pie is really IT. For $15 for a standard sized pie, it's totally worth it. If you like pie, get some cash and RUN to Sugaree on Friday. You will eat every bite of your crust too, I promise! read more

Their blueberry muffins are pricey but oh so good - especially warmed in the oven! They are chock full of blueberries with a crunchy top. Like I don't think they could put any more blueberry in without calling it a compote, which at least explains the price. Brioche loaf is yummy and stays good enough for toast for days even in the fridge. The mini key lime cheese cake is awesome and tangy. The 6" tomato pie was yummy! Custardy quiche-like filling with flaky crust (a bit rich but delish). Re covid the curbside pick up was easy and both times we also went in to pick up last minute treats. So rest assured you don't have to make all your decisions ahead of time - let's face it who can remember to place order by 1pm on Wed?! read more

Poor communication and business practice. Was told to email my cake order and that they'd absolutely notify me if they couldn't accommodate it. Nobody reached out so I called about a week later and they rudely advised me they wouldn't accommodate the order. They wasted a week I could've found another bakery after assuring me they'd inform me. I specifically asked if someone would let me know because I was afraid this would happen. For those of us who had babies during the pandemic and are simply trying to celebrate their first birthdays (and the first time many of these children will meet many of their relatives) a bit of kindness and frankly basic communication goes a long way. read more

This place first piqued my interest after I emerged from a Saturday morning yoga class in Dogtown and I noticed that just down the street there was a line out of the door and around the block. Upon further investigation, I see that the genesis of this impressive queue is cake and pie- of course. There are few things I stand in line for willingly: disneyland rides, sample sales, and any type of dessert food. So, I was intrigued and put Sugaree into my mental cache of places to try. A few weeks rolls around and I finally make it back here (note: plan your arrival carefully, as they're only open on Fridays and Saturdays!). I think my mistake was rolling up to the bakery around 2pm rather than doing the whole "line around the block" thing, as their featured pie was all sold out and I was left with limited options. I ended up getting the key lime mini-cheesecake (which was DA BOMB, excuse my '90's language), boyfriend got the mexican chocolate mini-cheesecake (also pretty killer), and we split a whoopie pie (tasted like a fancy Hoho). The bakery itself is a tiny little establishment, so go take a walk and find a bench to sit on while you enjoy your sweets. There are a ton of beautiful wedding-style cakes decorating the store, which was pretty cute. I have an insatiable sweet tooth so I'll certainly be back, but I won't make the mistake of waiting until the afternoon- 11am is certainly the magical hour around here. My husband and I are relatively new to the area (we moved to the Hi-Pointe section of the neighborhood in February as transplants from southern IL). I didn't know much about Dogtown before moving here, and even today I am guilty of forgetting the depth and breadth of this neighborhood. There are so many hidden treasures around here, especially as you travel further south. Sugaree Baking Company is, to me, one of those hidden treasures. One of my managers at work actually recommended the place to me when my husband and I had found our apartment and were preparing to move. I'd never heard of the place until a little bit before this year, but they have been around almost 20 years (nearly 15 in Dogtown). It's weird, because I have never really considered myself a "pie person." For a majority of my life I'd choose cake over pie without hesitance. But NO MORE. But pie-lover, be warned. It takes a bit of self-direction in order to optimize your Sugaree experience. Your first "must" is to join their email list. They don't have a pie menu online, but they send an email every week with that weekend's selection of pies and other pastry offerings. You simply email them back with your order and a couple bits of contact info (and it goes directly to one of the owners herself). Also, the bakery is only open for pick-up items and walk-ins on Friday and Saturday from 11a-6p. And cash only. Which would typically annoy me since I never carry cash. But for a Sugaree pie, I will walk uphill both ways in the snow to the nearest bank to make an ATM withdrawal. My strategy is to order three 6" pies, instead of one 10" pie. Either will run you $15 + tax. Variety is the spice of life after all. I have brought these pies to family dinners and every first-taste of pie is met with acclaim. Last night we brought a peach-raspberry, chocolate cream, and pecan pie to my folks'. I thought my dad was going to die over the pecan. It was good enough for him to throw off his entire healthy diet for an evening. The pecan pie *is*, hands down, the best I've ever had and my current favorite from the Sugaree line. And their fruit pies, my god. If I wasn't a pie-person before, the last thing I wanted to be was a FRUIT pie-person. But NO MORE. The peach-raspberry was straight-up delicious. We've had their berries-of-the-forest pie as well, which is a filling concocted of fresh raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. The fruit pies are a perfect combination of tart and sweet. Customer service is top-notch. If you forget to pick up your advance order, they will call you. They are also pretty forgiving if you decide to cancel your order. I'm a little less willing to forgive you, however. I went in yesterday, clutching my $20 bill, expecting to leave with change. Their display cases are a problem so I am always tempted to order extra items. Their mini desserts are so cute, too. Cute enough to buy and scarf down. I am also a sucker for their NY crumb loaf. It's like a pound cake layer with a crumb topping layer of identical thickness. WHAT! The woman behind the counter rang me up and being $.02 over with the crumb loaf, she was like, "Oh NBD there's two pennies in the change jar." God. She made it so easy, and then threw in one of their mini momofuku tarts, on the house for good measure. Might I reiterate just how much I was able to bring home for $20.02? I shudder to think how much a similar purchase would cost elsewhere. (I'll gladly shell out the $2.50 for my next momofuku tart, btw.) Time for some breakfast. This is making me too hungry for words. Maybe I'll slice up some crumb loaf! Cupcakes and cake pops and whatever-other dessert item trend has had its moment. It's pie now. Pie now and always. read more
