The beer list (2 full pages) at this restaurant is out of this world! You can get anything from fruity beers to dark beer and I swear I would go just for the beer. The food was good as well, I tried the Mac and Cheese and although not as good as my mom's whole-made Tomato Mac & Cheese it was still very good. The atmosphere was was the kind of place your parents would say "this is where we went on our first date!" Definitely a great location (right next to campus) and the price range was pretty decent too! I highly recommended it, I know I'll be going back for more beer! read more

Seriously lacking in quality control! After one bad experience after another, I've decided that my last visit there will be exactly that...the last! Ordered mussels. They smelled strongly like a pig barn...no joke!! They did have bacon on them which wasn't stated in the menu (and I'm a pescatarian) but the bacon smell was BAD and it wasn't very cooked and had big chunks of raw fat on it...revolting. I let my husband taste the broth and he made a scrinchy face and said, "that's bad!" Then he smacked his tongue to the roof of his mouth a few times indicating a lingering bad taste and continued making the scrincy face. He said, "you can't eat that." Which I felt gave me permission to send it back (something I never do). Then, I ordered the salmon salad to replace it. It came and the salmon was raw (not mentioned in the menu) and some of the lettuce was wilty and slimy. I picked it out and left it on a little pile on the table. The server said nothing about it when I showed it to her when she asked if the salad was a better choice; she just gave me a blank stare. My husband liked his breakfast sandwich and clam chowder which he said had no clam in it or clam flavor. He said it was a good potato soup but clam...nowhere to be found. Service was average. Our server forgot to bring the lemon I asked for and our wait was fairly long. My husband and I both got to see one server's "bottom" on two separate occasions however, as her short skirt slid up as she bent over slightly to clean tables. Lucky us? In addition, parking is difficult to find and there's only one bathroom stall. Yeah...unless friends are going and I'm just along for the ride, I won't be back. read more

The beer list is one of the best in Edmonton, they have veggie options, and very savoury dishes. If you're not too hungry, try the chili lime popcorn. I love this place! They have a great outdoor patio, a large selection of beers and a great brunch! The only pitfall is that they fall short at greeting me at the door every time! The staff almost seemed trained to turn people away at the door when it's busy. Instead of actually looking around and carefully thinking what a realistic wait is by scouting the dishes and seeing what people are about to be done, they have a tendency to bark an hour and walk away. If you can get past the grumpy/rude door greeters, you're bound to have a delicious dish! read more

How have I never yelped up on this place! Love the food...... and their espresso is the bomb! Let's get past the obvious issues- limited space, limited parking, deal with it. That's my only reason it doesn't get that fifth star. Service wise, they have it down packed, your seated and looked after, if your in line waiting they take your name deal with as it comes up accordingly-it's the most effective way to deal with space as well as first come first serve style seating. The espresso! Oh gawd! Just try a vanilla latte and you will see what I'm throwing down then pick it right up and probably order a second. I've eaten the chicken waffle, the meat was homestyle and tasted great with what I gather to be a home made style brown sugar syrup. Yum! Is there any UofA student (or staff!) for whom the Sugarbowl is not a favorite? I love this place year-round, but summer is when the Sugarbowl truly shines. In addition to a great patio, they're going to serve you up live music and an unmatched array of beer. Red diner chairs and wood tables give this place a casual feel, but the candles on the table when the sun goes down and happy company lets you know you're not at a dive. The Sugarbowl is the quintessential university bar. Unfortunately, it's so awesome that seating can be hard to come by. Be prepared for a bit of a wait no matter what time you go at. My favorite on the menu is macaroni & cheese, but I've never had a bad dish. Always check to see what the specials are, as it can be something different from their regular menu. Come for breakfast, come for lunch, come for dinner, come for beer. Enjoy! read more

The beer selection is ample, the atmosphere is cool (hipsters will fit in but others won't feel left out) and the service is decent. I've had a few dishes off the dinner menu and I've never been all that impressed. The lamb burger was probably the best of the bunch. Great breakfast place. Portion sizing a little small but taste is king. The sauces that came with our meals were amazing. We found that ordering a cinnamon bun with our breakfast filled us up. Nothin special!! They have a great beer selection but their menu is limited and inconsistent. Depending on who's in the kitchen be prepared for disappointment. This restaurant has everything I love. My favourite beer (Delirium tremens) , breakfast food, and the best portobello mushroom burger you'll ever eat. Their sweet potato fries are amazing and come with better chipotle mayo then most places. The only issue I've ever had here was the fact that their waffles are served with a small amount of maple butter instead of syrup which makes the taste of the dish (chicken and waffles) dry. read more

Pretty average food, better than average beer selection. Unfortunately it is a tough place to relax and unwind, as it seems the staff are having trouble adjusting to the success of the restaurant. Although they weren't overly busy, the service was slow right from being greeted at the door, to taking and serving our order to collecting payment. When our table finally received any service, it was loaded with a smugness that was difficult to overlook. Been going there for years, and during the last couple there has been a steady slide in attitude and service. Sadly I think that was my last visit. It's easy to forget about the Sugar Bowl because it's kind of tucked away in a little clump of businesses at the southern end of the High Level Bridge, but I absolutely love coming to this cafe/restaurant/bar. The atmosphere is dark, warm and romantic, lit with candles and lined with brick walls, with little plants on the tables. Yet it's also very loud and exuberant without ever becoming outright rowdy, kind of the perfect place for the more refined of nearby university students to come out and have a good time. On summer evenings it can be tough to get a table but the waitresses are friendly and understanding; before this summer's Oasis concert they didn't mind me holding a table for four for, like, 20 minutes while I waited for running-late friends despite there being somewhat of a line forming after me. I sipped a bottle of Fruli (that strawberry beer from Belgium that is a must-try) and ate some decent bruschetta; when my friends arrived, they pounded back multiple pink martinis that are apparently extremely good (not to mention potent). The only thing I dislike about Sugar Bowl is the bathroom. Maybe it's the close proximity to the tables or the somewhat thin door, but I always feel like I'm in some kind of urban outhouse in there. read more

I'm excited to write about one of my favourite places in Edmonton, the Sugar Bowl. I have been going here since my first year of university. There is something warm, comfortable, and welcoming about this place. It is somewhere you can bring your friends and sit for hours. For breakfast I would recommend trying out their All Day Breakfast Special which includes hearty portions and unlimited amounts of coffee. The Sugar Bowl is also known for their gigantic cinnamon buns (which sell out very fast). For lunch and dinner they have an amazing selection of beers and all sorts of classic foods. One of my favourites is the bison chilli and cornbread. Check it out and once you do I know you'll go back! The only negative thing I would say is that the service is slow. So if you don't have a lot of time, check somewhere else out. read more

This place quite possibly had the best meat ball sliders in the city. Absolutely amazing. Moist and juicy. Be warned you get 3 and each one is fist sized. I recommend ordering extra marinara sauce fit dipping because it's amazing. However I like my prosciutto a bit more cooked so it's crispy and not so fatty. But it didn't ruin the experience at all. I made the mistake of ordering a side of fries with these monstrosities. Oh hell no. Took half home for lunch the next day. They also make their own ketchup here which is also the bomb. I've been to the SugarBowl on three occasions, and each time was a little different. Something that is common with all the visits would be how loud it is. Never come here expecting a quiet/romantic dinner. Lots of beer on tap for the yeasty-yelpers. My first time here I had the Jerk Chicken Burger, I remember being happy with it, and enjoying my meal. Service was good. Busy as usual. Extremely loud in there and I wasn't expecting it when I had come for my first time. It was a bit tough for my father to get in and out of the place, as he has some walking problems, but the staff were accomodating and sat us at the nearest table to the door. I then came for breakfast, tried to order a cinnamon bun but was told they were sold out. That was sad, since it was still quite early, so I went for the Belgian Waffle instead. Still a delicious choice! Service was mediocre. Our server seemed to prefer other tables and it took a long time for any drinks, and no refills were ever offered. On my most recent venture, I decided to go with the Mac 'n Cheese with applewood smoked cheddar. The server suggested getting bacon in it, and I happily obliged! Unfortunately for me, the bacon wasn't 'in' it, as she had described, but merely sprinkled on top. With the bacon I did have, it was a good dish. Once I had finished the bacon though, the dish was bland and virtually flavourless. Which was a disappointment. I think I'll give the SB another try. The service and food quality seems to change on a per-visit basis. Maybe I need one more go around. read more

This place isn't as good as the cool kids would lead you to believe. The lamb burger is good, but it isn't exceptional. The creamy corn and ham soup that I tried was a disaster -- it was watery and the ham appeared to be sliced sandwich ham. That soup was far from good. The creme brulee with which I finished up my meal with was quite decent. My server was a little wonky and awkward. I'd wager that she is new to waitressing. Overall, I'm happy to have tried SugarBowl, but I don't know that I'll be in a huge rush to return. That's a pity, as the staff work rather hard to try and run a top-notch establishment. read more

Haven't found anything on the menu I didn't like! Chicken and waffles are perfection, and I really like their portobello mushroom burger. They are really great about making substitutions to your meal... Try the pommes frittes with their house-made popcorn seasoning! I promise you will not be disappointed! Their ketchup and chipotle aioli is fantastic, and has just the right amount of spice! Other great menu items are the stirfry, lamb burger, eggs benny (for brunch!), and the jerk chicken burger. I finally tried the infamous sugarbowl this morning with friend. It definitely did not disappoint. I ordered the basic 2 eggs any style with bacon, and my scrambled eggs were pretty much perfect. My friend, however, had the Eggs Benny and said it was one of the best she'd had. As a Benny non-fan, I have to admit it looked fantastic. The service was very good considering it was very crowded. My only complaint are the single washrooms--we were sat close to them and a line formed pretty quickly. All in all, a very good breakfast and would definitely return to try one of those yummy-looking cinnamon rolls. read more

Went to the Sugar Bowl on Sunday for brunch and was actually very disappointed. Some of the reviews looked good but certainly did not meet my expectations at all. The hostess was kind and cheerfully we got seated right away and the atmosphere great and a nice restaurant, but downhill from there. I ordered the SugarBowl Benny and it was very disappointing. The eggs were cooked right through almost like they put a hard boiled egg on my plate. It was on top of a piece of cornbread which was dry and dense. There was no flavour and sauce was minimal so overall the whole Benny was dry and tasteless and presentation was even lacking as well. My daughter order the waffle it was covered in whip cream, could have had more fresh fruit on it and it was not a Belgium waffle cause it was thin and unfortunately burnt. Was not fluffy at all. I could make better waffles with Aunt Jemima mix at home. We didn't get topped up with coffee once till the end of our meal and we had to ask for it, our server didn't even do a quality check on the food. Would I go back? definitely NO. read more

Although it's a quaint little nook for university students, the quality of the food has decreased significantly over the years. I used to love the chicken and waffles, but the last TWO visits, my chicken has been rather unappealing. It's always quite busy and sometimes it can be overwhelmingly packed with people and servers. Wonderful experience! Came here for Sunday brunch, it was packed which is always a good sign, we only had to wait 20 mins, and this place was worth the wait! We had a great server named Lisa, I started with a latte which was excellent, and then ordered the sugarbowl Benny which was unlike a regular eggs Benny but was sure delicious, it came on a bed of corn bread with perfectly poached eggs and ham, the hashbrowns were great as well and served with a side of a spicy ketchup sauce, I was really impressed with this meal and can't wait to come back, prices were decent as well, I highly recommend this restaurant! read more
