This is my absolute FAVORITE lunch spot in the greater Jackson area! The service at Sugar Magnolia is warm and inviting, and the food is fantastic! The ambiance is cute and cozy, with a little bit of outdoor seating, too. My favorite thing to order is the "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner". It has the honey rosemary fried chicken (or grilled), and it comes with two sides. I always get the macaroni & cheese and a side strawberry salad. It comes with a drink and the daily dessert, too, which is usually a little piece of cake or banana pudding! All of that for $14 is a great deal! If you haven't been here yet, you've got to try it. The customer service is OVER THE TOP! The lovely staff are always warm and inviting. They also offer you samples of their king cake if you ask nicely. They have done multiple last minute cake orders for me and they always come out perfect. As a Nola local, I can confidently give their traditional king cake a 8/10. There is good density:air ratio in the dough. The cinnamon filling is well balanced with a hint of almond. I would like a little more icing but that's my only critique! My chicken salad sandwich was good. Not great. Good. But my chocolate brownie was delicious. If I recall correctly, I believe it was called a southern chocolate brownie. But it was my mom's chocolate sheet cake. If it was in fact a brownie (not completely sure what I ordered now) I would not call it a brownie. It was a cake. But a delicious cake. I get the impression the place gets mostly regulars. We were just passing through. It seemed to me the young man taking our order didn't have a ton of patience for a family with questions. I opted for 'chicken dinner' lunch- 3 smallish but tender, juicy, flavorful fried chicken strips, side choices of macaroni and cheese (like a crumbed, crumbly au gratin- not creamy, though delicious and moist), and tender-crisp broccoli. I stopped by to grab a frozen meal and ended up grabbing a sandwich for lunch on the go. It may have been the best club sandwich I have ever eaten in my life! The bread is clearly homemade and so fresh. The potato salad is a true southern recipe--identical to how my grandmother makes it. This isn't quite a 4 star and it's not quite a 5 star. I'm thinking it's a 4.3 stars at the end of the day. Nice down home county try cooking type place. Lots of desserts to choose from. Owner and one of the employees were making the rounds checking in with customers and seeing how they were doing which is nice to see. Employee who took our order seemed a little miffed about our questions (we had lots) and it seems like a place with many regulars who know the drill and we are not regulars and we definitely did not know the drill. Might have been an off day for him - and us as well. Who knows. I had a southern citrus salad which was nice and light on a blazing hot day. 2 in our group had the club which they enjoyed and seemed to have generous portions between the slices of bread. 1 member had chicken salad which she declared to be good but not great. Potato salad side dish was sliced potatoes vice cubes which is different from what we are used to and could have used a squick more pepper / seasoning. My wife picked up the creole penne with sausage and crawfish, creamed spinach and one brownie, $73.00. The penne pasta was mush, and the crawfish was almost nonexistent. Both were way over cooked. The cream sauce didn't make it through the freezing and reheating process and was like grease in the pan. And yes, we reheated as per their direction. The creamed spinach would have been great if it weren't over salted. I'm really looking forward to the Fudge brownie as I've had them before. This was my first time to eat at Sugar Magnolia. We had previously tried eating there about a year ago, but they didn't sell lunch at the time on Saturday's. Sugar Magnolia was a cute bakery and restaurant and the staff was extremely friendly! They checked on us several times. For lunch they have a special as well as sandwiches and salads. I got the pimento cheese blt sandwich which came with chips or potato salad. Get the potato salad! It was so good and my sandwich was great as well. The bacon was nice and crispy and the pimento cheese was superb. They toasted the croissant that it came on for me as well. The other entree that we got was he Saturday special of poppyseed chicken and a vegetable. This also came with a piece of lemon pie for desert. The bite of the casserole had a greater flavor. I couldn't believe how fast it was ready after we ordered. We weren't even finished looking at their deserts before it all came out. Since mine didn't come with a desert, I decided to try a couple of the cake bites/truffles which are 88 cents each. The chocolate covered peanut ball was by far my favorite! I could have eaten the whole tray. I did enjoy the others that I tried as well. Next time I go, I'm going to try one of the brownies which look amazing. Sugar Magnolia also has a lot of casseroles that are ready and just need to be put in an oven that would be a great dinner at home. They said they are 9 dollars a pound and range from 1 to 4 pounds. Found this while my mom was having a procedure at the Mississippi Sports Medicine Clinic on Lakeland - just a few minutes drive. Salads were filling, fresh and delicious! My mom and I got full salads (I got scoop of pimento and cheese) and my aunt for a 1/2 salad with chicken and was satisfied. Yum! We also got some of their sweets - which were amazing. I've never eaten here but I have picked up their casseroles in many occasions. This place has the food. I've never had a dish I didn't like. The Rotel Chicken Spaghetti, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, etc, all of it is excellent. I love keeping a couple shelves of these in the fridge in case the wife goes out of town for a few days. Also, if someone needs a pick me up I will grab a casserole for them. Sort of like a Get Well Soon" chicken pot pie which is much more appreciated than a Walgreens card...amiright? read more

CAUTION BE VERY CAREFUL. You will not want to stop eating. This local place is great. The menu, as you can see, to me is a little confusing if you have not been here before. They do have a paper menu you can sit down and look before ordering. I selected my order for take out online. The ordering process was easy. I elected to sit down and have my lunch. I opened the box and it looked as if I was at Wolfgang Pucks, great. The second thing I thought was that this was not that much food. Now that I have finished, it was just right. I selected the desert of the day with my plate lunch---I would have paid $8 just for the desert. The lemon cake was fantastic. They also have grab n go dishes. I have a friend that told me about this place and he gets his Thanksgiving and Christmas dishes here every year. Now I am not one that goes on and on about a place, but take my word for it and give them a visit. Also I read the negative report and I believe they were addressing the wrong restaurant. I live in Seattle and had the privilege of visiting Sugar Magnolia Takery for Sunday lunch. It was AMAZING! 1) Food- I had their fried chicken that was dipped in a honey rosemary sauce, some amazingly seasoned broccoli side, mac and cheese like my grandma used to make, and some of the best banana pudding I have ever had. It was hard deciding between that and their chicken salad. I would have gotten both, but the portion sizes are incredibly generous, and an hour later, my pants are still fitting a little more tightly! :) They also had a great selection of casseroles, side dishes, and desserts that you can take (hence the name Takery). I really wish they were in Seattle because bringing home dinner to warm up or taking food to other people couldn't be easier. AND their prices were really great, too! I don't know that I could make something on my own for as good of a price as Sugar Magnolia (and certainly not as tasty based on the lunch I had). 2) Service- From the greeting at the door to taking away my plate, the service was EXCEPTIONAL. I appreciated that everyone was friendly AND fast. All the employees were very knowledgeable about the menu and were very happy to answer questions. My food arrived perfect, warm, and quickly! I also bought 3 desserts to take home with me: a rocky road brownie, a pecan square, and a petit four. I took 1 bite of everything and, despite being super full from my meal, couldn't help but eat the entire petit four. So now, I have 2 desserts to take home with me, but if I'm being honest, I'll have 2 desserts to eat on the plane because they are not going to last much longer than that. I stumbled upon Sugar Magnolia while I was next door at Cerami's at a Flowood Chamber of Commerce reception. One of the employees brought in a fresh-out-of-the-oven blueberry, cream cheese King Cake. I lived in Louisiana for a 6 years and developed a taste for seasonal King Cakes. I HATE the mass produced ones at the grocery store and the ones from the big bakeries in New Orleans that are shipped up and are 3-5 days old by the time I get them home. So far, I had not found a good King Cake bakery in the Jackson area. Enter Sugar Magnolia. These guys KNOW how to build a King Cake. Owner Elizabeth Arnold came over from Julip's to open her own bakery and casserole shop in Flowood. The place is great and so are the people. They whisked me around the kitchen and showed me the incredible rotating 6-shelf oven and the way the King Cakes are hand built.
