This little place is tucked away off Lakeland Drive, down from Schlotzsky's in that little white shopping center. Blink twice and you'll miss it...and that'd be a crying shame. First things first...that Smash Burger. Son...I about slapped myself just to make sure I wasn't dreaming! I'm telling y'all right now, it's the best smash burger I've ever put in my mouth, and I ain't taking that statement back. Now let's discuss these Trashed Ribs. Sweet baby Jesus riding a smokehouse...WHOEVER came up with these deserves a parade! They are so doggone good they'll make you want to hug the pitmaster. The baked beans? Mercy! If Grandma made beans this good, half the family would've never left home. Best baked beans I've ever eaten, and that's saying something because I've been eating my way across Mississippi for a long time. Now I'll admit, I'm a mustard potato salad fella. Always have been. But even though theirs isn't my usual style, I'd eat a five-gallon bucket of it without apologizing to anybody. The brisket sandwich? Lawd have mercy! Tender enough you don't hardly need teeth. And that Brisket Philly Cheesesteak? If you order it, don't make plans afterward because you're gonna need a nap and probably a testimony. The folks working there couldn't be nicer if they tried. The waitress treats you like you've been neighbors for twenty years, keeps your drink full, and makes you feel right at home. That's the kind of Southern hospitality folks are always talking about. So quit fooling around with the same ol' drive-thrus and chain restaurants. Gas up the truck, tell your wife you're "running an errand," and head over there. Enjoyed our Pulled Pork Platter with fries, crispy Brussels sprouts, and Pit Beans. Loved that they serve Pepsi products so we could have Mountain Dew. Melanie provided great service at the end of a long holiday shift -- she was prompt, efficient, watchful, and informative. We couldn't eat dessert as we were full but lots of others were chowing down on their banana pudding. Nice little restaurant. We loved the food Since there were so many options we chose the Almost Heaven Platter to share. It included 4 ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sausage with 2 pieces of cornbread and 2 sides. My husband got the corn on the cob (2 pieces) that was grilled and had some type of rub on it that was tasty. I got the coleslaw which came in a separate bowl that was large enough for 2 people. There was a BBQ sauce on every table and our server said what it was called, but I can't remember, however it was so good with a hint of something sweet not spicy. Do not be fooled by the storefront or location. This place has top notch smoked meats, burgers and sides. Our server was very pleasant and Johnny on the spot. I had not eaten much all day and my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I had the pick two platter, and I chose pulled pork and burnt ends. My sides were a house salad with their homemade ranch, mac & cheese times two because my husband wanted mac & cheese. You can add another side for two dollars. He got the Smashburger and fries. The pulled pork is so tender, perfectly cooked and a little bit of the super moist pulled pork along with the seasoned smoky edges.IYKYK. The fries were hot and delicious. The mac & cheese uses the cavatappi pasta and has the most delicious creamy white cheese sauce. It is rich and decadent. The salad is fresh cut lettuce, and I did not take the time to ask if the croutons were homemade, but something tells me they are. The garlic bread is cooked fresh to order and it was so amazing. The only sad thing about this experience is that we live so far away from this place. Please know that the pictures were taken after I applied barbecue sauce and added some of his fries. They were not good enough that you wanted to eat them without dipping in sauce. Pulled pork about the same. Their beans weren't bad. Mac & cheese was pretty good. Sweet tea was a little weak. Absolutely horrendous horrible food! Yuck! To much burn was on the overcooked half smoked tiny chicken dry and tough. The fries had a bad aftertaste of scorched oil, crispy but tasted bad. The collard greens were the worst of all they were wayyy too spicy, vinegary and mushy just gross. The brisket was good. Upon entering no bbq smoked smell. Nothing tasted smoked or smelled smoked. The food did not disappoint. I got the lunch special, pulled pork sandwich with a side and drink for $10. I ordered fries as my side and they were skin-on, not too salty and plentiful, half my tray. Hubby ordered half a chicken with crispy brussel sprouts and mac&cheese. We both loves the sprouts and the mac&cheese was homemade. The chicken was not dry and hubby was very pleased with the flavor. Our server, Sarah, was pleasant and efficient without being overly attentive. I'll admit it was fairly small restaurant, about 20 tables. But it also wasn't very busy at 11:30-12:30, maybe 4 other tables. Probably due to it being mid week. The reviews saying it's the greatest barbecue are simply wrong. Pull up to any smoker on the side of the road (usually at gas stations) and you'll find the real deal. Brisket was overcooked, and crazy salty. The burnt ends were cold (and crazy salty). I also tried a little pulled pork from my wife's plate, that was better than my food. Our son had wings and they were mediocre (dry rub). Overall on the meats side, I'd say 2/5. Now, the sides are where this place shines. Pit beans and Mac and cheese were VERY good. Green beans, coleslaw, fries were also good according to the fam. Cornbread was very good as well. The service seems to be great. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made it a better experience. The young lady at the front seemed to be having one of THOSE types of days, and I get it. I worked in the restraint industry for a bit and they can't all be great days. The ambiance of the place is strange. My son said it felt like a Chinese buffet type place while I was getting a fast food vibe. It's in a shopping center so there's not much to work with at its core. Overall, not a terrible place but certainly one we checked off the list and will not likely be returning to. I am visiting from California and was in search of Mississippi BBQ and I found it. The Ribs and Trash Ribs were fall off the bone delicious. The sides were all individually amazing. Being from California, I have to say I have very minimum experience with bbq. But let me say Kenova sure does not disappoint, the prices are incredible it's hard to believe for the amounts of food, quality, flavor and service. From the style of this small restaurant, it gives cozy vibes and paired with such an enjoyable dish, what else could you wish for. So far I've fallen in love with the brisket sandwich and its side of fries. The meat is so incredibly soft, just melts in your mouth as you take a bite releasing all those flavors. And the fries don't fall too hard behind, now I'm gonna get shunned for saying that they are better than in n out fries. They are a bit similar but I love how part of the potato skin is left on for more of a crispy taste. And don't forget to order a side of white bbq to dip them in! Definitely at kenova the portions of dishes are huge and might perfect for splitting, even a side dish is entree sized. I've been on the fence about eating here mainly because I rely on Yelp a lot since I'm new to Mississippi & there aren't too many reviews here, however after seeing how the owner interacts with patrons & people in the community on Facebook I decided I needed to try it. I wasn't disappointed. Hubby & I stopped in for lunch he had brisket & smoked sausage- chilli, collard greens & Mac n cheese plus corn bread- he didn't love the chili, did love the greens, brisket, Mac & sausage. I had the burnt ends, chicken tenders, crispy brussel sprouts, house salad with the vinaigrette and Mac n cheese. I enjoyed my entire meal (loved the salad it was fresh and a generous serving the dressing was served on the side and delicious and the croutons were so GOOD!) my only low light I would say were my chicken tenders a little bland but otherwise fried well and not greasy. We will definitely go back and try some other items on the menu. I also have to say they have all young staff and they were so kind and well mannered I was impressed.
