    Welcome ducks
    Hope Y.

This was our first visit to Sugar Factory. While they've been open for a while, it wasn't very busy when we arrived for lunch. Seating was quick, the hostess gave us rubber duckies when she got us to our table. There were about 7-8 tables with guests, including a private party in the far corner of the restaurant. Our server brought us water, gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and asked if we had any questions. Hubs ordered a BLT and onion rings, an tomato soup and I had the grilled cheese and a side salad. After ordering, I realized we did not have the same menu. Hubs' menu included the BLT, but mine did not; it also offered to add meat to the grilled cheese, but my menu didn't have that option. I probably would've ordered the meat, but I just didn't know that was an option. I ordered an adult beverage, which came out fairly quickly. We were watching the other tables around us, and service seemed to be quite hit or miss, as some guests on the other tables were halfway through their meals, while other guests at the same table was still waiting for the meals to arrive. Not a good sign. My grilled cheese was the first order to arrive, and I politely waited a minute or two for hubs order to come out, but it never did, and he insisted I eat my sandwich, because who wants to eat a cold grilled cheese sammy? I shared it with him, because I know he can get hangry, and because it was a really good sandwich on sourdough bread. I got half way through the sandwich and the waitress brought out a bowl of tomato soup for him. He gave me the "look" and I, of course asked the server to check on his order. The server went in the kitchen and said that they were "working on it". The kitchen worked on it for another 7 minutes before bringing out his BLT and onion rings, which were not hot, although they were crispy. By the time he got his food, my meal was done so I ordered another adult beverage. I had enough time to go to the restroom and expected to see my drink, but alas, there was no drink to be had, and the water was not topped off. I got the feeling the server was now avoiding us, because my husband wanted a to-go box, and every time he tried to get the server's attention, he went back into the kitchen. I finally asked a different server for a box and if we could get our tab, since it was apparent that my second drink order wasn't coming. I double checked the bill to ensure I was only charged for the 1 adult beverage and we paid and left. I am not sure what the problem was, we ordered at the same time, but basically had 2 meal seatings. The food was fine, but the lack of continuity in the kitchen made this visit not so great. I had hoped for a much better experience, hopefully they will figure out how to fix what ever is going on in the kitchen.

Their version of a hot fudge sundae!

Located in Ala Moana Center on upper level makai side where Islands used to be and across from the permanently closed Romano's this place is like sophisticated version of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. No matter how old you are it's hard not to get excited walking in with the decor all candies and ice cream, pastel colored floral wall and an adjoining candy store! My daughter and I had already had lunch but after shopping a bit we craved a sweet treat. The place was crowded but we were seated immediately by a friendly hostess. A server immediately brought waters and we told her just gonna have a dessert. Perusing the menu they have all kinds of burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, beer and wine, even a brunch menu, tons of specialty coffee drinks, goblets of cocktails(!), shakes, and pretty much anything that's considered comfort food at very reasonable prices. As expected, a lot of desserts to choose from but finally settled on their hot fudge sundae with two spoons. When she set it down on the table with a flourish and a mischievous smile, we were like omg this looks amazing!!! Three scoops of ice cream - vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, hot fudge all over, dollops of delectable whipped cream all over the place and on top with sprinkles and cherry! Needless to say nary a spoonful was left and we went back to our shopping completely sated and energized. We will return to try the brunch with their omelette, Reese's Pieces French toast, pancakes, waffles and yes even a Leonard's Malasada's waffle topped with Lilikoi custard, whipped cream, seasonal fruit and yes I'll say it again... a malasada!

This place has got ambience down. There are so many things that look appealing that you can seem to keep your camera down. We were greeted right away and got a seet right away. The servers and host were honestly really sweet and made us feel welcome. The menu is definitely more geared towards the younger crowd and drink specials. But here we were, coming in with our 5 year old daughter checking it out. We got a flatbread, spinach artichoke dip with chips and alfredo pasta topped with salmon. We got our spinach artichoke dip. We had it for 40 minutes before our food came out. The dip was so small and it got me wondering how this can cost as much as it should. It was ok, but lacking seasoning. The parmesan top gave it a better balance, but once that was gone, It tasted like mush. I suggest seasoning it better. The flatbread was on the smaller side. It was agood flatbread, just small and lacking of any wow factor. However, it's just a flatbread. The pasta cream was delicious with the salmon. Without it, it tasted like under seasoned alfredo cream. Maybe chopped salmon mixed with the pasta would balance the taste? Overall, even with the beautiful ambience and great service, the food was lacking flavor. Although, I think the specialty is more on the desserts and drinks. So I do suggest to try them out as a dessert or pau hana spot.

In short, all Sugar Factories are not created equally. I prefer the Las Vegas Strip Sugar Factory over the Honolulu Sugar Factory. We were greeted almost immediately upon walking into the restaurant and seated within minutes. Great! We were seated at our table for almost 20 minutes before the hostess who seated us asked if we've been helped yet. She apologized and then minutes later, our server came to our table letting us know that she didn't know this was her table. Not so great. For the duration of our visit, we experienced the same slow service with no sense of urgency whatsoever. While we waited for our food, I went over to peruse the candy shop. Be forewarned, it's more of a candy corner with two shelves of candy, unlike their store on the Las Vegas strip that boasts dozens of square feet of candy shelves and displays. The food? Overall ok. We ordered an appetizer platter, clubhouse sandwich, and Birria tacos. The sampler platter comes with onion rings, chicken tenders, mac and cheese pops, and buffalo wings. We substituted the wings for more onion rings. The mac and cheese pops were generously portioned. The surprise hero was the chicken tenders. Most places get this wrong, 9 times outta 10. The chicken is usually dried out, overcooked, and you have to try to salvage it with the dipping sauce. To my surprise, their chicken tenders were moist on the inside and extra crispy and flavorful on the outside. I dipped it in the ranch sauce it was accompanied with, but it wasn't really necessary. I opted for the Birria Tacos knowing that Sugar Factory isn't an authentic Mexican restaurant, but I was in the mood for it. The dish came with three tacos alongside of sour cream, birria sauce and a really tiny portion of Mexican rice and beans. Tiny as in, I wouldn't be surprised if I got a tablespoon each of rice and beans tiny. They were generous with the meat, which fell out of each taco as I ate them. The flavor was good. The bar is pretty impressive with shelves lined with drinks that run all the way up to the ceiling. After all, they're known for their goblet drinks. Goblet drinks run $42 each ($32 for non-alcoholic) and many are designed and tasted by a celebrity. For example, the Strawberry Lemonade Smash was designed and tasted by Snoop Dogg. Other specialty drinks include martinis and margaritas. Lots to choose from. The ambiance is bright, hip, and the restaurant is endorsed by celebrities. The cover of the menu is covered with headshots of the Kardashians, Bruno Mars, 50 Cent, and more. On one side of the restaurant, a large TV screen replays celebrities dining at Sugar Factories across the nation. Maybe I would've had a better experience if I had tried one of their dozens of oversized drinks or generously portioned desserts, but because of the slow service, I was over it. If we decide to dine there again, I'll make sure we're not hungry to begin with since the speed of service expectation has been set for us at such a low bar.

It was a Saturday night and we stopped by to have some dessert to celebrate a friend's birthday. It wasn't too busy, not many tables filled but service was quite slow. The menu looked like it been through a lot, the floor was slippery, and the table was sticky. Expected much more. We shared basket of fries ($7), the classic sundae and new york cheesecake among the six of us. We already had dinner so this was more than enough to satisfy our sugar needs =). A nice balance of salty crispy fries with the sugary loaded ice cream, YUMMY!

I recently visited sugar for a work outing, there were about 8 of us and we had a reservation. We were sat quickly by a warm hostess. The restaurant was EMPTY. This is prime dinner time (5:45 pm) on a Saturday night. Our server never smiled once. Could not answer any questions. May have been new. Our food was quick, as I would hope being that we were the only guests. I ordered a penne pasta and salad for me and the girl next to me to sit. We had to ask for a second plate. The salad didn't have any dressing on the side, so I asked "could we get a side of dressing for the salad please?" The serve said, "uhhh I guess, what kind?" I asked for the vinaigrette that the menu said it came with and she went to the kitchen then came back and said they didn't have any. So I asked for Caesar dressing. It was bitter like a vinaigrette with thoughts and prayers of being a Caesar dressing (I only dipped into it with a fry). When I dug into the salad, I realized the vinaigrette was at the bottom of my salad, I told the server this and she said "oh weird" .. One girl at the table had mold on the Parmesan on her Caesar dressing (pictured) this was replaced quickly. No additional correction or management apology. Half way through our meal, the woman who ordered the colorful sliders found a whole slider on the floor, thinking it must have been hers that she dropped, she picked it up put it on the edge of her plate. It was not hers, it was cold and old and then she had two purple burgers. The prices are really high for the mid food. We had a Sundae at the end and it was not as big at all as previous visits and pictures others have posted.

What an awful experience! If you have food allergies DO NOT go here. The servers do not know what's in the food. We told the server there was a celiac allergy and dairy before ordering. I ordered the fries- they came out with no ketchup or condiments on the table. We asked for ketchup By this time I had ate a few and they were lightly breaded (it was a few minutes) we called a server over and yup they were breaded. They took them back and then a minute later drop off ketchup- ummm what?? The tortillas were supposed to be homemade corn. My chicken tacos come out they looked weird and were dropped without the rice and beans which we have to ask for. I eat one taco and realize they are not just corn.. they then bring out the rice and beans the beans are covered in cheese. We ask again about the tortillas and have them take the beans back. They look and said on the package it says corn.. Package? They were supposed to be made in house.. The beans come back out I eat a few bites they have dairy in them I can taste it and they tasted rancid.. We call a manager over she says the beans are in a can but her cooks could have added dairy she didn't know. At this point my throat is swelling I'm having a hard time swallowing. I had to have my friend rush to target to buy allergy meds so I could stop the swelling. It was an awful night of pain. Worse experience I have ever had. Do not eat here. Zero stars if possible!

. I think they are known for their yummy drinks and their desserts. I food was ok. Service was also ok. It was friendly but they weren't as attentive as I would have wanted them to be. They forgot some of the things we asked for. Other than that, very cute place. This is a great place for birthdays and celebrations

We were walking around the mall and stumbled upon this place. I was excited to take my teenagers here since I really wanted to come here when I was a teen. Well..... they were not impressed. We got an appetizer platter. It was ok... the drinks were not up to par, it was all sugar. (Hence the name I guess), but man do they take the name seriously. Anyways, it was slow at the time maybe I was thinking if the place had a little more upbeat vibe, at least that would have made it a little more interesting... I don't know but it didn't do anything for us. Probably not memorable as I don't feel like I need to pay $24 for a blue dye syrup drink, with a little dry ice.

Lunch at Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, Hawaii... Sugar Factory is a chain restaurant. It spans the USA from Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, and Nevada to Arizona, Texas, New York, and Florida! The name of the restaurant makes it sound like a dessert shop, but it's not. They serve pasta, tacos, Hamburgers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and more! We didn't have a reservation. Luckily, they were able to seat us right away - on a Sunday - for brunch. We wanted the Rainbow Sliders (for the Gram), but we were told that appetizers weren't available - we could only order from the brunch menu. I switched my gears to the California Veggie Burger and told our server, Sina, that I wanted the duckie that came with the Rainbow Sliders. She said that the duckie is $5. Hmm... When I got the California Veggie Burger, I looked for the avocado, but there was none. I mentioned it to Sina - she apologized and brought it on the side. However, when I was looking for the avocado, I flipped the patty over and found it to be dark in color. It's no wonder that it was hard and dry... because it was burnt! I told Sina that I wasn't able to eat it. She apologized again and brought the manager over. I showed her the inedible meal (except the French Fries - those were crisp and yummy). The manager removed the plate, took it off the bill, and gave a discount on my next order. It seemed like other customers were ordering non-brunch menu items - so - could we order a pasta dish? Yes! I got the Eggplant Parmesan on spaghetti. It was massive! I couldn't finish! The takeout box was really heavy! Tastewise, it was okay. Sina really tried her best to make it up to us. She gave us a "mistake drink" from the bartender - a non-alcoholic raspberry-flavored goblet drink called "The Big Cloud". It was impressive with the cotton candy... and smoke billowing out when the liquid was poured into the glass. Amazing! The decor is really Instagram-worthy. The telephone booth, floral walls, pink hearts mural, and Candy Shop made us walk around and snap a lot of photos! Other customers were celebrating children's birthdays where staff got everyone singing and celebrating together! This is a very festive place! It's good to visit at least once! Get the Rainbow Pancakes for a stunning photo!

Not as sweet... Hearing so much about how to find the sweetness in this newbie is decided to wait and give them a chance as this newest restaurant in Ala Moana Center Ho'okipa Terrace 4th level was something exciting and certainly different as we don't have such a electric place that will entertain and celebrate all things sugar...the rainbow and color vibe the decor is something so fun and happy. Looking to finally give them a try we came for lunch on Sunday and arriving early there was no wait and got seated immediately and greeted by our server who was patient with us taking pictures and exploring the entire place and talking up a storm catching up lol...when we finally decided to order we were sadden that they were starting their brunch for the first time this weekend and wasn't doing any appetizer, flatbread or pasta which was the direction we were hoping for as breakfast wasn't something we was looking forward to. Sigh...plan B as we got our burger which i always order medium rare which again came out very well done...gah! Not wanting to make a scene but really didn't enjoy it but the fries were cooked perfectly, we just had to as both our meals were bad and informed our server to who apologized and informed the manager who finally came out and we asked why are other tables ordering items that aren't available at this time and we were not able to...long story short it seems this has been happening apparently and she was just not showing any empathy but did discounted our items. We did end up ordering pasta which was okay and the portions were quite huge but our server Sina was very sweet and did her best even brought out an extra error drink call "The Big Cloud" which is obvious with the cotton candy top and as we captured the show from the pour it did bring a smile though sad that she had to go through this as apparently the kitchen really needs to work things out. The whole restaurant is vibrant and lovely with various instagramable wall and photographer there to take pics of your party making it a great and fun place to enjoy and gather. Thank you!

Grape Crush (overpriced, no fizz & weak on booze) - VN
    Vince N.

Pre-dinner cocktails brought us to Ala Moana Center's newest sit down restaurant. ATMOSPHERE: They've taken over the space vacated by Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks. Totally renovated, interior decor is colorful and happy, with shiny chandeliers above, available outdoor seating and a small candy shop at the rear. RESERVATIONS: Recommended at peak hours. MENU: Overwhelming, to say the least. They make Cheesecake Factory's offerings look like a classified ad. Their forte is a lengthy list of libations. Food concept is American bar, so it's a mishmash of cuisines a mile long. BEVERAGE: Grape Crush - $21.00 Because the menu didn't list what alcohol was in this drink, our server went to check. Grape vodka & grape schnapps was the answer. Sold! What a letdown as while the drink was fairly good on flavor, it was flat, as in no fizz from the grape soda. The alcohol content was really low too. And with that whopping price point, is totally not worth it. SERVICE: Jace took great care of us and was very friendly & professional. OVERALL: I'd return, though only to try their waffles. Uh... for lunch, I guess?

I did have an upset moment because my gps said I would get to Asato's at 1:58 so mentally I decided "I guess I didn't need it". But... lucky for me, traffic was in my favor and there was no delays, no red lights, and a parking space right out front so I got out of the car at precisely 1:55! Whew, I checked in and ran inside, excited that I made it. Also, super happy they were not sold out. You know I also cannot just get 1 pint. I took home 2 Pumpkin Custard, a Strawberry and candied ginger (which i got for mom so she doesnt get mad that I restocked the freezer). I did a purse grab and go so fast I did not notice the duchess status until going back to the car! So woohoo! I will definitely be sure to post a photo of my homemade pumpkin pie with the homemade deliciousness of pumpkin custard sherbert later this week! Happy Thanksgiving!

The most creamiest one I've tasted was Kūlolo Haupia while being a passenger on a hot day. My son and I have so far enjoyed their classic: green river, pineapple, strawberry and seasonal flavors: Super Li Hing, Li Hing Float, Lemon Peel Cola Gummy. My hubby not so much because he prefers more cream in the mixture or ice cream. A personal preference for him. More for us. Hahahahaha! There are weekly rotations for their classic and seasonal flavors now available at Foodland Farms Ka Makana Ali'i and Pearl City. I usually select and buy various pint flavors from Foodland Farms Pearl City. Go early because supply will run low during lunch time or early afternoon pending on the seasonal flavors. Follow them via IG for more deets. My son decided to grab a random flavor from our home freezer, Super Li Hing. Without checking the freezer, I asked son, "Did you eat a few scoops or the whole pint?" He responded, "I ate the whole pint." He added, "It reminded him of eating shave ice." I will accept this as a gracious compliment. Infinite gratitude to all of the hardworking staff for creating, executing and producing one of a kind, edible, fun, pint size, local sensations for all to enjoy!

I've seen this place packed before with all tables filled and a line. Weekdays in the afternoon might be good timing! The vibe was your average "ice cream" ambiance. I loved the photos so you can see your options. IMO, the menu board lighting was a little weird, I thought when I was taking a photo it was my eyes, then thought it was the lighting from outside, but I think it's lit by bulbs? Idk. LOL. You can still read the menu but at first glance, you will question if it's your vision. LOL. My "mini" Mahalo-halo was perfect! It didn't make me feel that guilty at all. I mean, I'm all about dessert before a meal. In my experience, it is always a challenge to eat Halo halo because it's filled to the top. My strategy: take off the cover (if it's not overspilling: if it is, skip this step), eat some of the ice cream, and take a few sips! That should leave you enough room to mix everything, each scoop you should get a different bite. A long spoon would be best for the larger sizes! Magnolia did not disappoint. I'll be back!!

Caramel MacNut sticky Bun ($5.99) perfect sweet bite with my black coffee. I appreciate the flavor but the MacNut flavor was subtle since I think it was alittle over powered by the caramel. Overall, it was a bit too sweet and decadent for my taste, but definitely a unique flavor that you can't just find everywhere.

When I met Yelp Elites Jackie and Donna last week, Jackie shared a place Donna took her to. I never knew the location of Cedar Street since I haven't been a townie in half a century. I looked up La Gelateria and we were a couple blocks away. They have dairy free too. Hubs tried the man's favorite Mac nut and I chose Kona coffee. You can order on line. It looks like a production kitchen in the back with freezers upfront labeled with the contents. $2.50 per tiny cup. They have larger sizes too but we just had lunch. Another colleague and I jumped at the opportunity to tag along on a Friday early afternoon. Located down Umi Street not too far from neighboring New City Nissan on N King Street, Samurai moved to their current location in 1995 serving Maui style sherbet, popcorn and other local snacks. They also expanded to Samurai Snacks Aiea for an impressive 20+ years before closing its doors in May 2023. We arrived shortly after lunch time where we pondered at the menu wondering what to get. It's not fancy here at Samurai - - the storefront is basic and nothing fancy with a few seats patrons can sit on if they decide to eat their treats on premise. Morale has been low at the office so I decided to get some convenient prepackaged 4oz assorted Samurai cups to cheer up the staff. My colleagues also picked up some bags of buttered popcorn with mochi crunch and furikake for an informal office party to welcome the much needed weekend. Because we were already there, we also got some soft serve cups to cool down before heading back to the office. My colleagues had the classic strawberry and blue vanilla swirl and I selected the mango. My colleagues enjoyed their selection but the mango didn't live up to my expectations. The color was vibrant and enticing but sadly the mango flavor did not come through. Each cup came with a sugar roll cookie that was delicious. After our cold treat we headed back to the office with our surprise for our colleagues where it was a big hit. There were many happy faces standing in line grabbing some popcorn and a 4-oz cup of Samurai. Overall, a much better experience with Samurai that's deserving of an update with higher marks. It has been noted in my books to stick to flavors I'm already aware of and avoid trying new ones for that possible disappointment that often happens to me.
