We'd really love to adopt a cat. We have donated money to Pretzel the puppy and other kitties at Toe Beans who needed urgent medical funds. Each time is a gamble on how well the visit will go because sometimes the kitties will be sick, or tired, and not in the mood to be social. There have been visits where the kitties had runny eyes, sneezed out mucus onto us, and just wanted to sleep. Today was one of those days. I'm not saying this is the kitties fault or that I blame them for being sick, the play rooms are small and so sickness between them can spread easily. It is odorous inside the establishment because there aren't open windows and the litter boxes are inside the rooms. They do have air purifiers but it doesn't help much to be honest. Today we made an appointment to go at 11, which was the earliest we ever went, and it was actually busier than we expected. They had rearranged the furniture around in the adult cat room so I had to crouch until one of the other guests offered me a stool to sit on. Two older women who seemed like regulars came into the room about 10 minutes after I entered and one of them moved a large cat bed off of one of the 2 benches so that she could sit. Then they scattered a bunch of cat treats from a bag that they had brought in themselves over the floor to feed the cats. I had never experienced that in my other visits and it was honestly off putting, because it made the free treats that are given to us to get the kitties attention pretty much useless. It just felt.. wrong. There was a strand of cat mucus on the grey cupboard that I was sitting on, and I warned my boyfriend to watch out for it before he sat down. One of the older women said "I don't think you should sit there, it's their litter box". Before she and her companion came in, another guest had been sitting on the cupboard. I only moved to sit on it once the guest moved to sit next to her girlfriend on one of the benches and because the stool was uncomfortable. Also, in our past visits, people always sat on that grey cupboard. So.. I don't know why she felt the need to tell me that. My boyfriend said that the 10 guest limit might be a bit too many people to let in at once to play with the cats. I find myself agreeing with him after today. We were really looking forward to hanging out with the cats today, but those 2 older women who dumped their own treats into the room like they were feeding a feral cat colony and the stressed, sick cats who just wanted to sleep or only move around to eat treats made us leave much earlier than the 50 minutes we paid for. Again, I appreciate what Toe Beans mission is, but they should look into changing certain things, such as installing open windows to allow ventilation and cleaning the rooms more. And maybe taking "sick days" for the cats so they aren't forced to entertain guests when they aren't feeling well.

They have a great mission: They team up with the Hawaiian Humane Society to showcase cats and kittens that are available for adoption, and if you are vetted and selected, you can take your chosen cat(s) home for their new life with you! Even if you're not in the market for a new companion, you can go to the Café, get a coffee or Italian soda, eat a scone, and pet adorable cats. There's always a nice rotating mixture of frisky kittens and older cats, and some are napping while others are playing. There are toys in the room where the cats are so you can interact with them. I always recommend reservations but you can walk in and see if there are spots available. You get lots of time to interact with the cats and it's usually not packed so there's room to interact with multiple kitties. Please check it out--it's such a good cause!
