We've been lucky enough to work with Kristin for some of the most special celebrations in our family, and her talent is absolutely unmatched. For our daughter's first birthday, she created the most stunning princess-themed cake--almond-flavored with sugared almonds inside--along with an adorable smash cake. She even made the cutest little flag banner spelling out our daughter's name, it was such a thoughtful touch and so well done. There are not enough words to thank Kristin with Sugar Dot Bake Shop for the delicious cakes she so perfectly made for our son's first birthday. We ordered a 10inch custom specialty cake (confetti flavor with fresh strawberry and cake crunchies) and smash cake that matched but was baby friendly (which our son loved), and my only regret is not getting better pictures for this review because they don't do justice. Kristin truly helped make the birthday memorable and DELICIOUS! Not only did the cake completely finish (which is a first usually large cakes have left overs), but everyone could not stop talking about how amazing it tasted. On September 21st, my husband and I got married in Livermore, CA. After trying a few dessert shops we settled with Sugar Dot Bakeshop. We live in Walnut Creek and found Kristin after looking all over Yelp and Google. A few months before the wedding we did a trial to find out which desserts we wanted to do. Kristin gave us a sample of every type we were thinking of. In the end, we decided upon mini cupcakes (the same flavor of our wedding cake, vegan chocolate peanut butter mini cupcakes, dark chocolate strawberries, milk chocolate strawberries, mini doughnuts, Rice Krispies, brownies, lemon bars, chocolate chip cookies, and ultimately, our wedding cake. Kristin came all the way out to Livermore to deliver the desserts for our 140 person wedding. There was so much desert and honestly NONE was left! I found out later everyone went back for thirds and fifths of dessert they loved it so much. Sadly, my husband and I didn't get to have any! Note to future brides, designate someone to make you a dessert plate since you will be too busy. Luckily, I knew they were good already from the dessert sampling we did. My husband and I did eat our fresh strawberry wedding cake. It was delicious. We just wanted a small one to ceremonially cut. Half of it is currently in our freezer to eat on our one year anniversary! Kristin was even flexible with the flavors and designs. I really didn't want to leave a review less that 5 stars but my experience was not as amazing as everyone else, I'm going to leave an honest opinion with photos. I hired Kristin for my little sister's Baby Shower based on the perfect 5 stars reviews and images of her work. I have never tried any of her baked goods. So I'm pretty much going in blindly, trusting yelp reviews. We first exchanged emails and she was NOT very responsive, and did not answer most of the MANY questions I had for her. She only responded to what she wanted to answer. I find myself repeating the same questions many times and she was not friendly in her response. Yet I went with the fantastic reviews and brushed it aside. I decided I'll go ahead and place my order as what can possibly go wrong if her reviews are so great. My sister deserves the BEST. You have to pay in full once you place the order and you only have 48 hours to cancel. I decided to make it simple and also order my cake topper with her (big mistake), she charged $16. I wish she gave me samples and more options, her customer service was poor. She sent me 1 image and then a 2nd one when I ask if she can do gold glitter (she just changed the font color). Again, poor communication on her part and I didn't want to upset her since she's doing the cake for a very special event. And it's now 1 week out, I can't get a refund if I wanted to. I had to trust the process and stay positive. Day of event. I get a text from her at 9:30am (pick up time 10:30am). I was mortified of the cake image she sent me. It was NOTHING like the images I sent her, the design or the color of the cake. I couldn't believe she would even send me an image of that cake thinking I would be ok with it! One hour before pick up time does not leave much room for fixing or buying another cake! Reference images were emailed in April of pale pink frosting and white flowers. The cake I got was HOT PINK frosting and orange flowers!!!!!!!!!!! I immediately texted her that was not what I ordered. I was literally crying as I'm hosting this very important event for a very important person in my life who was having her FIRST baby and she LOVES cake!!!! So Kristin calls me and said she can do it over in 15 minutes and that she couldn't find white flowers anywhere (that's a lie, white flowers are AVAILABLE year round at many locations, even safeway). How can you not find white flowers and have them ready when I placed my order in April and it's now June. Mind you, when I drove to pick up my cake, she literally lives around the corner from Wholefoods, Safeway, and Trader Joe's and you're telling me you couldn't get white flowers for a 6 inch cake? Blows my mind. 15 minutes later she somehow pulls it together and managed to redo the pink frosting and wow even got white flowers! I dont know what makes her think it was okay for me to pay $161 for a cake that I did not want with the first image. When I came to pick up the cake, she personally brought it out and said she wouldn't let me leave with a cake I didn't love. I don't understand how that was possible because I am now 10 minutes behind schedule due to this and where else would I buy a cake an hour before the event? I didn't have time to ask for better flowers, better gold drip that didn't look orange, and a better cake topper! At this point I had to take what I got and get to the event! I was cringing when she said that to me, why would you offer this to me when I picked up the cake the day of the event. You had since April to be this nice and worked with me to make the cake I loved. But you were short and mean and couldn't even hold a phone call during the whole entire process until the day of the event. The left side of the cake where the flowers were placed began to sink at the event (perhaps from all the removal of flowers and redoing of the entire exterior of the cake). And eventually there was hole in the cake so I had to ask the restaurant to cut the cake earlier than planned. I would've taken a photo of the cake with hole in it but I was just too upset and didn't want to ruin my sister's Baby Shower pointing it out. It was a very intimate and detailed oriented event for a party of 15, it was so special for her. The cake did not taste as amazing as everyone said, or maybe because I was left a bad taste in my mouth with the whole experience that I couldn't enjoy it? I picked the most popular flavor of strawberries filling with cake crunchies. I hope this review keeps you humble and reminds you that EVERY client matters, and taking your time out to make a call once the order is placed to go over details and questions would've been deeply appreciated. I 100% regret my order placed with you as I am a very unhappy customer, it's 4am the night after the event and I'm laying here bothered by the whole experience.
