I'm sad to have to drop by my rating. I honestly can no longer give the shop a 5-star review. While their cupcakes are still really good and I can give stars for good cupcakes, I have to lower the rating for customer service because I recently had a really challenging time trying to order a cake from the Walnut Creek branch. Receiving a texted coupon for 15% off my order, I was excited to use it since I needed a birthday cake. Though there was an online code, I could not use the discount online. I called the shop several times, but there was no answer, and I even left a voice message but never heard a call back. Finally I noticed there was number on the website to text so I did, and got a response. The response was that it was too late to order the cake, and the coupon couldn't be used online ordering system because the online ordering system was different from what was used in the store. BUT I was told I can still call my order in and pay in advance over the phone to get the 15% discount if I still wanted cupcakes, and if the store didn't answer, the person sending the text said he/she would contact the store. I appreciated that kind gesture. The next morning, I settled for cupcakes and decided to call the order in and pick up the cupcakes in the afternoon since I had no time that morning to go to the store. But lo and behold, I called and again no one answered. I texted the same number from the day before and a response came back that they would contact the store to give me a call. I checked in by calling the store two more times and still no answer. And no one called back that afternoon either. Sadly, I had to give up, but was glad to give business to a way more responsive bakery with delicious cakes. read more

I loveeeeeee Cupcakin! I literally rave about their key lime cupcake, it is my favorite! I am just a little bummed with their reward program and how their system is set up. I wanted to place a custom order online for a birthday but I realized there was no way to confirm if the order was going to translate into earning rewards points. I LOVED the creme brulee cupcake I had, the custard was delicious and I loved the caramelized sugar topping. Ahhh, cupcakes. We love the Cupcakin' Bake Shop location in Berkeley on Shattuck and just had to check if the Walnut Creek location was just as good. The answer? Yes it is. We got six cupcakes as our sample size: strawberry, cookies n cream, key lime, carrot cake, Madagascar vanilla, chocolate chip (limited flavor). They were all fantastic! Moist, not too sweet, perfect ratio of frosting and cake. I do seem to recall that the strawberry we've had from Shattuck has a ribbon of strawberry jam through it, but maybe they just don't do that anymore. And honestly, it's ok if they don't because they are still freakin' amazing! Strawberry and key lime are my favorites. But you really can't go wrong with any of them. These tasty treats don't come cheap, but they are so worth it. And you can save a dollar of you get the "baked yesterday" cupcakes. They taste just as good and will still taste good even two days later than that (if they last that long!) Or get the mini cupcakes. They have the same attention to detail as the regular sized ones. Which is something I love about this bakery; their mini versions are exactly the same as the regular size, just smaller. If the regular is filled or has a cookie base, the mini will also be filled or have a cookie base. No shortcuts are taken. I'm so excited to have this location as an option. Both are about an hour (one way) from my house, but these cupcakes are so good I have no issues making the drive just to pick up a dozen or so. I love this place! read more

I absolutely love Cupcakin' and have been a loyal supporter since the original Berkeley location -- especially because it's Black-owned and the quality has always been exceptional. The flavors continue to expand, the cupcakes are consistently delicious, and the brand has maintained its charm over the years. However, I do want to share one frustration: the rewards don't roll over to online purchases or custom cake orders. As someone who regularly shops in-store AND orders online, it's disappointing not to be able to use rewards across both. It feels like loyal customers should have full access to the benefits we earn. Pricing is a bit on the higher side, but I still choose Cupcakin' because the quality remains worth it. I just wish the reward system aligned with that same level of care. My only other suggestion is to increase the quantities of staple flavors -- especially Red Velvet. No one was in front when we entered but someone came out from the back within a few minutes. There were many cupcakes on display to choose From but I was here to pick up a Key Lime Pie cake and Strawberries and cream cake. The key lime pie cake was ok. The cake was a vanilla cake with a key lime custard and a graham cracker crust. The crust was my favorite. The cake over all was way too sweet and there was not much curd in it. The Strawberries and cream cake was the same cake layers as the key lime pie cake but with strawberries in the middle. Not many strawberries but very few. Very awkward that they misspelled Birthday on the cake. I wish I caught it before I left the store. Both cakes VERY sweet. They're soaked in a sugar syrup so they were moist. We're not really cupcake people, so even though we've walked by Cupcakin' Bake Shop dozens of times we've never stopped in, but that all changed this weekend. Stopping in there was a bit of a line, but we were able to spend those moments checking out the offerings and deciding which we wanted. To be blunt, Cupcakin's prices are fantastic. A day old mini cupcake for $1 is exactly my speed. The honey picked up a fresh caramel mini ($2) and I chose the day old mini ($1) and a two day old large bourbon vanilla ($2.75). I'm not really a fan of cream cheese frosting, so for me the two day old was my favorite because of the buttercream frosting. But not being people who lean towards cupcakes the mini was exactly the right amount for us. My review is based solely off the cupcakes. I got 3; oreo, key lime and carrot cake. The cupcake wrapper is not full all the way, normally that wouldn't be an issue but on the key lime it has a filling and very little cupcake to icing/filling ratio...they scooped out too much and it was barely any cupcake at all so it tasted like I was mostly eating icing & filling. The Oreo one was okay but again too much icing to cupcake ratio. The same thing for the carrot cake. I will say for what cupcake I did get to taste that was pretty solid, nice, flavorful & the perfect crumble. They just need to fix the ratio and it would be better. read more
