Made a last minute visit to Sugar Cane last night to get out of the cold with my wife. What a pleasant dinner. The food was very fresh and hot and made of good quality ingredients. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. The menu was diverse in that it had different Asian cuisines, but not 20 pages of the same stuff you get everywhere else. Simply put, this is better. With Gourmet Garden buying everyone in the area, it's a pleasure to have someplace that is good and unique. read more

Tried once and NEVER again!!! I don't know what's worse, the food or our waiter. Was not fully paying attention and had attitude for not paying attention. Had to repeat an order 3 times. Passed by with water 3 times and never once refilled my water. Ordered: Appetizer sampler: ok, basic. Nothing special. House special pho: yuck...not real pho. Broth had no taste whatsoever. Description said meatballs and had none. Instant pho taste way better than this. Pork lo mein with apps: noodle was blah, pork in it was like a needle in a haystack and when found it was chunks of pure fat. Chicken pho: smelled funny and wasn't even slightly edible. read more

A little about me: I'm a Vietnamese-American raised in California and I grew up neighboring the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam. In the Little Saigon community, a restaurant survives by being the following: good, fast, and cheap. That being said Sugar Cane definitely would NOT last long in California as it does not fit any of the above criteria. Sugar Cane has a variety of food - Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai. My husband and I have come here to eat pho(Vietnamese beef noodle soup). The soup broth was the most watery broth I have eaten in my life! My husband got the beef one and I got the chicken one. Utterly just a big disappointment. The chicken one was slightly better than the beef but not by much . . . We also have come here New Year's Eve and had Americanized Chinese food. The food went well with the drinks. Also, the drinks were pretty tasty. I hate to give a local place a poor review but I really did not think much of the food. On a positive note the staff is very friendly and I thought the drinks made here were delicious. However, you come here expecting authentic Vietnamese food, I would not set the bar very high. read more

Obsoletely love this place! Caramel chicken is my favorite and I've tried some of the Pho but a little too spicy for me. The drinks are pretty good nothing amazing but they have all top shelf liquors there so order up! Oh one more thing my opinion is that it's a little more pricey than $$ but hey most Asian/Japanese restaurants tend to be a little more. Enjoy! read more

Let me just say their CALAMARI is in my top 5. Unique Vietnamese dishes, it has chinese stuff on the menu, but it's honestly nothing special, however that is a totally different story with the Vietnamese food!! I forget what the name is, it's on their dinner menu, it's a vietnamese crepe appetizer. It's meant to be shared cause it's huge, but it can also go as a main course. Very clean and well decorated restaurant, very nice restrooms, above average!!! 5 stars for pho selection, service, cleanliness, menu, and overall experience, a guarantee great lunch or dinner! also they deliver and to go etc. read more

I found this place impromptu thanks to yelp (you all rock!!) and was pleasantly surprised but not really, I trust you all. :) I met a friend here after work for dinner and drinks. We had the bar to ourselves for a while but then business picked up and before we knew it, all the tables were full. The bartender was great. Everything we ordered was good, I remember the one thing we didn't like was the vegetable plate but that was our choosing having read the description. The bartender showed my friend a ginger flavored Cognac, she was in love. It's always nice when the bar staff not only know how to make drinks but even know about the food. He was great! In the area so consulted Yelp for lunch. A friend and I opted for takeout because of a dog in the car and shade parking was not available. We placed our order via phone and the gentleman who answered was very friendly and efficient. We were quoted 15 minutes and in 10 when I walked in, our orders were bagged and ready. The gentleman who answered the phone who I believe was also the same guy at the counter couldn't have been more friendly. I asked to use the restroom and leave my paid order at the counter and he happily said "no problem". The restaurant and ladies room were both modern and clean. The young waitresses were also friendly acknowledging me with smiles as I walked through. I ordered the pad Thai which included one appetizer of which I chose the boneless BBQ pork. My friend ordered the triple delight with pork fried rice and chose 1 appetizer for $1.50 and her choice was the chicken teriyaki. Both were packed in styrofoam containers and included three containers of sauces: hot mustard, soy sauce packets and two others which we did not even open. 4 fortune cookies were also included. I enjoyed the pad Thai which had a light "sauce" with two medium shrimp and very tender slices of chicken. The portion was generous. The sliced boneless pork was very tasty and fairly tender. My friend was a little disappointed that the brown sauce was so thick. She assumed it was going to be a lighter sauce. Ample pork fried rice was included which i liked because it was laden with soy sauce. The chicken teriyaki was very tender. Overall I would give my experience a solid 4.5 and my friend a 3 so a 4 seemed appropriate. I would like to return and dine in and try some of the other menu items. read more

Decent. We have been meaning to come here forever and finally did it Friday night around 6:30. It was moderately crowded, there appeared to be a busy take out counter. Parking seems ample and it's easy to find. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated, we sat at a booth that could have use a little work on the upholstery :). The service is quick and very friendly. For starters we got the special spicy shrimp rolls and the crepes. Both good, the spicy shrimp rolls should have been in a smaller wrapper but the filling was good. We ordered 1/2 a Peking Duck, Kung Pao Chicken and shrimp basil fried rice. Again the wrappers for the duck are too big (like a flour tortilla for a burrito) I like them a little smaller. The skin on the duck was crisp and flavorful and the meat was well cooked. The other two less adventurous items were what you would expect from any other Asian restaurant. I will definitely be back as the food is not greasy and everything we ate was well presented and delivered with a smile. read more

Updated 09/19/17 When you're feeling under the weather or hung over, pho is the cure. You know you're not getting authentic pho when: -your condiments are already poured into a little dish for you - you don't get a tray of bean sprouts, thai basil, or lime -your pho broth taste like sugar -your small bowl of pho is a kids size - 1/4 of your pho bowl is thick onion slices I don't understand the 3-5 star reviews for this place. There are more authentic places that taste better and cost less. Phobasil in Beverly, pho Paris in Peabody, or pho Minh ky in lynn if you don't want to drive into Dorchester or Boston. October/2016 Ordered delivery since we've just moved to the neighborhood. Beef chow fun looks good but is missing the smokey flavors that you normally order from an authentic Chinese place. Pad Thai is unbelievably sweet. Doesn't have any spice to it. Mapo tofu has freaking mushrooms in it? Freaking weird and mapo tofu is supposed to be spicy. No freaking spice. Wonton soup is really salty, the wrapper is really thick and barely any meat. Hot and sour soup has too much vinegar and no spice again. The only upside to this place was the very fast delivery that they did. I guess it's my fault for ordering non Vietnamese food from sugar cane. Not sure if I'll be ordering take out from here again. Delicious bun vermicelli, especially after a hike in the Ipswich River Sanctuary; food was authentic and great accompanying sauces. They even prepared a vegetarian fish sauce which was thoughtful. My friend had the pho chicken. The pho soup wasn't as flavourful as other restaurants, but it wasn't greasy which is good. They also didn't provide the side dish of beansprouts/mint leaves/lime as they would in chinatown. We sat near the kitchen; everything that came out of it looked really yummy. Decor was quite beautiful and modern; probably one of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants in the Boston area. read more

I ordered eggplant tofu pot that only had 4 pieces of eggplant. It was mainly tofu, not even the soft tofu, and a whole pot of sauce. I love the food and employees. It's the customers in the bar. I sit I try to have a drink and meal, every time I'm half way through my meal I have to sit and listen to the obnoxious conversations. I have been ordering from the hem for about 3 years, usually when I want a guest to enjoy a very good meal. Food has always been excellent, except for one short period when I assume they got a different chef. But that was short lived, the quality returned. But tonight! This food is STELLAR! The portion of a small bowl of beef pho was perfect for me today, because I wasn't so hungry but needed to grab lunch to get through my afternoon. It was a bit plain, but it was still good. Only giving this place one star, i ordered the chicken pad thai and it was prepared completely different than any other pad thai ive ever had, the rest if the food wasnt too bad, i sat there eating with my family and multiple times two different waiters kept coming to our table asking if we were done, there were three other tables being occupied at the moment and they did not go to any of those, the waiters also sat at a table across from us and stared at us the entire time. The whole place was empty. Nobody was at the desk so we picked a table and waited . A sour face woman told us to stand next to the door and wait to be seated. It's not enough we waited for them to come out , we actually have to get up and walk back to the door for them to tell us wait to be seated . We can play bowling inside and not hit any customer. 5 people with 2 thumbs each gives this place 10 thumbs down. R U D E . Just came back from dinner tonight and this place has earned its 5th star from me. We wanted to have a somewhat authentic Chinese New Year dinner and that's hard to come by in Peabody. We didn't want to venture too far after it took me almost 2 hours to get home and Su Chang's is always so crowded that we took a chance on Sugar Cane. Our meal was one of the best I have ever had here. We have probably been here 3 or 4 times now. The Walnut Shrimp is under "Vietnamese" specials, but is one of my favorite Chinese dishes. It features a thicker batter than I am used to, but the shrimp were humongous and the fried shrimp didn't taste greasy at all. There wasn't a lot of broccoli and the sauce isn't the same as in Chinatown, but we gobbled up the entire dish so I guess that says something. I had a craving for Peking Duck and this was the fastest I have ever had this dish served. Usually, you have to order in advance at most places, but the duck came out around the same time as our other entrees. The duck wasn't too fatty, the scallions really fresh, and the crepes/wrappers were aplenty. My husband who loves hoisin sauce gave this dish a big "thumbs up." The meat was not as fatty as most places, which could be a plus or minus depending on how you like your duck, but overall for $15 (half duck), it was a pretty good deal. I didn't expect it to be very good since we were in the 'burbs, but it satisfied my craving. Finally, the star of the evening was the pea pod tendrils (dao mui) special. This is a dish my mom tends to order in Chinatown. For $11, it wasn't inexpensive so I was hoping it was worth it. Wow, we ate every bite and the flavors were awesome. It was comparable if not better than some of the dishes I have had in C-town. It is a simplistic dish of sorts, but this dish really showcased the talents of the chefs at this restaurant. I can't wait to have this again! My husband claimed, "This is the best Chinese vegetable dish I have ever had!" It is only on the specials menu though. read more

Ate dinner here last night and will not be going back for a few reasons. 1. all of the food came out of the kitchen randomly, one appetizer, then another 15 minutes later for the other 2 at our table, then one entree shortly after that, then the other 3 entrees 15 minutes later. We only got a "the rest will be out soon", but no apology or explanation why. We were all very hungry so this was a mild form of torture. I can handle that though. 2. My friend and I ordered the vermicelli dish, which has the fish sauce served on the side. They only gave us about 1/3 cup of it to split between the two of us, which resulted in a very bland dish. everything was fresh, but was essentially plain noodles with plain veggies. Excusable...maybe its supposed to be like this? 3. NO free refills on sodas. be prepared to be charged $2.00 a glass, and don't expect to be forwarned of this 4. Unexcusable: my friend bit into a bone in his general Gao's chicken, cut his mouth, ran to the bathroom, spit out part of it and brought the other part back for evidence. We all inspected it, including my chef friend, and it absolutely was a bone shard/chicken talon. We know these things happen with meat, and honestly wanted to inform the waiter to save another patron from this painful experience, and maybe get some compensation, at least a visit from the manager acknowledging the occurrence if they did not offer monetary compensation. We informed the waiter, showed him the shard/talon we displayed on a spoon, stated what happened, and he promptly informed us it was ginger and ran away with it. that was NOT ginger. There was no mention of the injury or the foreign substance by the waiter upon him quickly delivering our bills, complete without a visit from a manager, and full price for everything. The fresh vegetarian rolls were good, earning a 2 star review. Otherwise: service was absolutely beyond terrible, food ranging from underwhelming to dangerous, and customer service non-existant. Our regular place for pho (Pho & Vermicelli on Route 1 in Peabody) is closed on Tuesdays so to get our fix we decided to try Sugar Cane. This is a nice-looking place, not too busy with an understated Asian elegance. No kitschy tiki gods here! The service was exceedingly friendly but slow for 6 pm. Usually wouldn't bother us except our daughter was unusually energetic tonight. (She's usually a good restaurant kid, but not tonight; sorry, other patrons!) My father-in-law got twin lobsters, which came out a bit overcooked and chewy, although they were nice and pre-cracked the shell. It was also delivered to the table well before my wife and my entrees. Who knew overcooked lobster takes less time to cook than pho? My wife and I both ordered beef pho. It was good, but not great. For one thing there was too much onion that almost overwhelmed everything else. And I like mine a bit spicier. It was served with a small dish of sriracha hot sauce, but not enough. Hotter! Spicier! Sorry. That doesn't mean I didn't like it. This is very good pho, much better than my least favorite ever and almost as good as my favorite. Make sense? We also ordered some summer rolls. These are the traditional Vietnamese rolls that are wrapped in white rice paper and steamed. Pretty good. The peanut sauce was a bit bland. Again, could have used more spice. Stop cooking for wimpy white-guy taste buds! Again, sorry for the outburst. I will also note that while the menu seemed short--only a handful each of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes--the ones they listed looked intriguing and there were also quite a few specials. Overall, I like Sugar Cane. I don't know if I'll go out of my way to go back, but I think of it as my backup spot for good pho. read more

Solid food, last time we got spare ribs, chicken teriyaki, summer rolls, shrimp & broccoli w oyster sauce stir fry, and angel hair Singapore style. We have ordered from Sugar Cane multiple times the food is always delivered nice and hot, Which is not the case with many food deliveries. I am pretty sure that they use their own delivery rather than Uber Eats or the like. Be ready it is usually delivered well before the time that they quote when you order. Thank you! read more

I'm not sure how this place have a really high rating? I think the different taste buds between Asians and Caucasians are extremely different. Reading through the reviews, I'm noticing that the bad reviews are from Asians and the good is from all other. Growing up in an ethnic household, I've had the best of home made cooking and also experience at a Global Perspective, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese Food. This place claims to be the best of both worlds. WRONG. Their Shumai's taste it like it just came out the microwave from H-Mart and their vegetables tasted like it was expired and rotten. Their fried rice was okay, bland, not worth the $15 dollars. Their customer service was great, but that was about it. Not recommended for those who have had real Asian food. read more

The two stars are for the service, which was friendly and excellent. The food was lousy. They serve a mix of Chinese & Vietnamese food. I had the mango shrimp and the flavor was good, but none of the shrimp were deveined. The spring roll was standard Chinese, though it was supposed to be Vietnamese. I am used Vietnamese spring rolls in the white rice roll. Prices were good, about $7 for a lunch special. The fried rice was good. The decor is calming & the ambience is nice. read more

I'm so happy to find a local Vietnamese joint right down the street! Steamed chicken dumplings and ginger soy sauce = DELICIOUS Their Vermicelli bowls with grilled beef and spring roll, is quite tasty and they have all of the correct sauces to spice it up! (Plum sauce, hot sauce, peanut sauce, fish oil) All very delightful. On my second visit I had the Curry Chicken with yams and peppers. It was spicy and sweet! A party in my mouth. My first experience I ordered over the phone and had it delivered, they were very prompt about 20 minutes, and brought all of the sauces I asked for (most Chinese places forget!) Then I dined in and the restaurant was very nice inside. Pretty fancy for Peabody. Prices are good. I was all in all quite pleased. read more

$9 Pho. House Special Pho is great. They have so much meat in there that I can't help feeling satisfied after that meal. Also try the Summer and Spring rolls. They are $2 each. The small size pho isn't that bad either. So if you go there, you can eat well wtih ten bucks. This place was great! Went here for a late lunch, but it was nice because it wasn't crowded. The atmosphere was nice, it was clean and bright. I ordered the mixed vegetable pho and thought it was delicious. Maybe it's because I haven't had pho in a while, however I could measure up this pho to others like restaurants in Boston's China town, Pho Pasteur. It also was on a level like Brookline's Lemon Grass, even though the restaurant was Thai versus the other being Vietnamese. My pho soup was wonderful, nice hot salted vegetable broth, lovely mixed vegetables and rice noodles. It would be overly delicious if they added some tofu, or extra bean sprouts, Thai basil and lime wedges for dressing. Yet it was only lunch time and I think they go big for dinner. Sugar Cane is a true gem of the North Shore. Located on Main Street in Peabody, they have some of the best Chinese/Vietnamese cuisine I have ever had. I have been here dozens of times, and have never left disappointed. The Pho is inexpensive and phenomenal, and I can't say enough about the friendly staff. The "traditional" Chinese food that you'd expect to get is delicious as well, and doesn't have that MSG feel you might find at other restaurants. Try Sugar Cane if you dare. Just know that if you do, you will never want to eat Chinese food anywhere else ever again. read more

I really cannot understand why so many have given this restaurant high ratings; I was very disappointed by the food and the service. We ordered take out and had to wait 45 minutes because the cook kept screwing up the order! As consolation, the hostess gave us an extra carton of white rice and acted like she was doing us a big favor. At this point, I decided never to return just based on principle: if you run a restaurant but can't figure out the simple concept of customer service, you don't deserve my money. Unfortunately, the food was even more of a letdown. We ordered a Vermicelli plate with vegetables and tofu. The vegetables were soggy and overcooked, there was a meager portion of noodles and tofu, and there was not much flavor. As much as food can ever be boring, this was. We also ordered the Mapo Tofu, which actually tasted and looked really bad - crappy ingredients, too much salt, etc etc. Plus, the tofu wasn't even cooked - it was just thrown into the mess of gross sauce. Sugarcane is so delicious. I love coming here. My stepfather beings me here once or twice a month for a just-the-two-of-us-dinner. I think it's mainly because my mother has never liked that kind of food, and he needs an excuse to eat at Sugarcane. That being said, I don't mind being the escape to Sugarcane excuse. Aside from having to wait a little bit longer for the food (which could be due to freshness of preparation?), everything is excellent. I like this place so much & I want it to do really well so that it stays in business forever. So I tell all my friends to go there. It's taken a lot of 'recommending', but some of them have made their way over and came back with rave reviews. I do wish that they would find a better location on not such a busy street. It's often impossible to find street parking, given the speed with which cars zoom by the place it's a bit scary trying to turn into their behind-the-scenes hidden parking lot, but I never regret it when I do make my way in. Here's the facts: slightly slow service, but call ahead for pickup and it's not a problem. Low priced food that makes the mouth water and the heart flutter in ecstasy is well worth braving sudden death by speeding cars. I love this place! The waiters/waitresses are so nice! They are always so welcoming, helping me and my aunt at the door. The manager is what makes the business honestly. He is so sweet. I always order either the hot & sour, or egg drop soup. The mango shrimp, & pad Thai is mouth-watering!!! I need to try the Pho because every time I come here I always see one guy sitting alone slurping on a huge large bowl of soup and looks satisfied hahaha. read more

Sugarcane is consistently delicious, never a question about the quality or taste! We eat here or order takeout at least once to twice per month, if not more. The owner Kevin is friendly, the bartender makes the best drinks (go for a mai tai or lychee martini), and the servers David and Nick are super attentive and quick. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! For appetizers, I suggest the chicken lettuce wraps, fresh rolls, scallion pancakes, beef teriyaki, and shumai. The egg drop soup, tomato egg drop soup, wonton soup and hot and sour soup are also delicious. For entrees, you can't go wrong with the make your own dish, where you choose your protein, vegetables and sauce. I also recommend the Crispy Aromatic Beef, Triple Delight, General Gao's Chicken, fried rice, lo mein, and I could keep listing. Definitely some of the best Chinese food on the north shore! read more
