Was soooo excited to try Sugar Cane after a patient told me how great it was, especially the Sesame Chicken. HUGE disappointment!!!! We got the Pu Pu platter for two along with the highly touted Sesame Chicken, Pan Fried Noodles with beef & Pineapple Curry Rice ALL the food lacked flavor. The beef was not moist or flavorful, the boneless spareribs we're dry, the chicken wings although moist we're not flavorful. The crab rangoon probably was the best thing in the Pu Pu platter but anybody's crab rangoon is tasty and delicious...what isn't good with cream cheese? So sadly my anticipation of deliciousness went out the window I will not be traveling almost 30 minutes to go and get take up when I can go right downtown for better Asian food. So disappointed! read more

I have been driving past this place for a quite some time always meaning to give it a try. My husband and I went out with some friends and they brought us here. I was delighted that I was going to get to check it out. I was not disappointed. It was bright and clean with tasteful decor, service was good. The food was yummy and fresh all four of us really enjoyed it! We will be back they have many menu item that I would like to try. read more

I LOVED Sugar Cane, I was a loyal customer for FIVE years! I celebrated my Ph.D. graduation there with a huge party of family and friends in 2008! I started to note that the food was going downhill in 2009, the quality was not always so fresh, the salad stopped being a lunch staple, the portions shrank, but still I kept going, hoping it would return to greatness! THEN in August of 2011 I went for lunch with a transgendered (male to female) friend and I noted the waiters behavior was VERY odd (this man had been my waiter at LEAST 20 times and NEVER acted like he did this day), I even saw him go over to the owner or manager and say something, laugh and then they BOTH looked over at us (we were the ONLY people in that section and one of only two tables in the whole place). The service was also odd, water not refilled, etc. Months passed and last week this same friend and I (who dine at a number of places locally, always without incident) and we decided MAYBE it was just a misreading of the situation, so we returned! We actually had the SAME waiter again and AGAIN, he was odd, never came to refill waters AND when we left the man just reached for the bill and did not say ONE word, no "how was it" or "thank you" just SILENCE and we felt sooooooooo uncomfortable! I called him from my car and told him what I thought was going on, he told me that "our personal feelings" never affect how we treat any customer! and THAT said it ALL! They do NOT like transgendered people and do NOT treat them as customers should be treated! So if you are for civil rights and equal treatment, SKIP THIS PLACE! read more

I'm Vietnamese. This ain't Vietnamese food. This is like going to PF Chang's for Chinese food.

Just moved to Peabody. My new go-to spot. I can see it out my window and smell it everytime i go to my car and it is brutal not to eat there for every meal. Twice this week... They will know me well soon. read more

Took a regrettable break from our usual Su Chang's and ordered Sugar Cane for delivery. I only ordered apps--beef teriyaki and crab Rangoon--but didn't get through much of either. Beef was fatty and sinewy, crab Rangoon were bland. What I did manage to eat came back up before I went to bed. We won't be making that mistake again. read more

This is my first Yelp review. After reading reviews for many years on different places all across Boston and its surrounding area, I've had a dining experience that deserves mention - unfortunately, in a negative way. Let me start off by saying that I am both a foodie and a chef, and am Chinese and Vietnamese by origin. I read plenty of great reviews on this place, and, being in the neighborhood for the weekend decided to stop in. The fresh rolls I ordered as appetizers were well-made, and competitively priced. They had the proper ingredients and tasted great. As an entree I ordered the House Special Pho - which I was really anticipating to be delicious, judging from the reviews. The pho here was truly awful. At $9.50, it is 150% the price of authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Boston, and close to twice the price of great Vietnamese places in Dorchester. Even the best pho-places in Boston cost no more than $7.95. The fresh vegetable accompaniments were tossed directly into the soup instead of as a side; the flank meat I had was a terrible quality of meat, where half of it was either lard or tendon or ligament. Lastly, and here's the part that cut my meal completely short and made me leave immediately - the meatballs in the pho were SPOILED. As in completely rotten, sour meat. I asked the waiter to tell the kitchen staff that they were serving spoiled meat and then paid promptly for my meal and left. On the way out, I also told the manager; he graciously offered to comp the price of the meal, but I didn't want him to take the situation lightly by thinking I just wanted a discount. It is unsafe, and frankly an astoundingly bad statement to send to customers that they serve spoiled, rancid meat in their soups. Even if the meat had not been spoiled, the pho was not authentic, and not good. It makes me disheartened to know there are people on the North Shore who think this place is good - I would urge you to venture out and try the other dozens of plentiful and tastier, better-quality options. read more

Umm a "Vietnamese" restaurant with no one speaking Vietnamese? I sure made a fool out of myself lol (I don't know how to say my favorite dish in English). I got the Pho Sate here the first time - so spicy it was barely edible. But okay, my fault for underestimating my tolerance. I still wanted to give this place another try. Second time I got pad thai. The pad thai came out with just a few strands of noodles and a couple of pieces of chicken and shrimp..nothing regular pad thai should be - no peanuts, no bean spouts/veggies, and completely lacking flavor. Really disappointed so with that being said, I will not return. read more

Went to check out Sugar Cane before but never had a chance to eat until yesterday 10/4/07. Just like Dom Pho&Vermicelli is under some construction and it being Tuesday would have been closed anyhow. Atmosphere: Very good. It is a little bit small and the tables in the main dining area are close together but if you get a booth and drink who cares right? Edit: The bar area is cozy I'd say. You shouldn't really be going here to watch the game. Its got approx. 7 or so bar stools and a few tables near the window. Not a bad place to just sit and have a few with an appetizer if you're on your way to a movie or a second sitting. Food/Selection: Mix of Chinese and Vietnamese fare. Menu is very simple basically the basics of the basics. Lo Meins, Lemongrass (insert meat here), Battered, Sauced, Fried Chicken dishes. On this trip we had the Pho. Myself with the house beef and my better half the seafood. Add in a side order of Summer spring rolls and we were set to go. Very good broth and ingredients were very fresh. **Note: It wasn't tough for us to order another dish of Sriracha/Sambal (hot sauce). Also if you want fresh spring rolls its the Summer Roll, don't just order "Spring Rolls" assuming they're not gonna be fried. Edit: Wow. Salty, Spicy Calamari. You can't go wrong. Recently tried from the lunch menu which is a buck or 2 cheaper than the dinner menu. Crispy, salty, spicy and ooh so tasty~! Drinks: Nice selection of classic Asian mix drinks. Definitely not shy with the boos though the cups are a bit small. Try the "33" Vietnamese beer its kind of like a light Heineken. Mix drinks are around 5+, Domestic Beers at 3, Imports at 4. Wine selection was nice but a bit pricey at around 25+ a bottle for your regular mix or Reds and Whites. Service: Was very friendly and willing to do our bidding. Napkins? No problem. More hot sauce? No problem. More drinks? Oh absolutely~! *Edit: With increasing popularity the family size like staff can get a little overwhelmed but it never was a problem to wave someone down. Overall: A nice little hidden jewel if you're not wanting to get rowdy at Kowloon's. Prices are a little bit higher than what you can find in Chinatown but hey, its Peabody. However, the quality was very good with fresh veggies and ample portions for the large. It was our first outing and I must say we won't be afraid to stop by again. Edit: We're loyal customers to the local joint and enough can't be said about the food. Give it a try. Don't be afraid to stay away from the fried rice and try a noodle soup or the non-General Gau like veggie/meat dishes. Hey they deliver too so you got no excuse. read more

This place is great. It has a parking lot in the back, and if full, you can park on the street. My reservation was ready when I arrived, and although the entire party wasn't present at that time, we were allowed to take a seat at our table. The waiter was very friendly and efficient. Food and drinks were also very very good. For food we had: crab Rangoon, walnut shrimp, spring rolls, General Gau's chicken, Classic Wonton Soup, Sautéed Spicy String Beans and chicken Pan-Fried Noodles. Everything was delicious and had only the necessary amount of grease. For drinks we had: Mai Tais, Soho Breeze and Pineapple passion. Well made drinks. Good prices and although not "strong", you could tell there was alcohol in them ;-) The overall atmosphere of this restaurant was also very nice. Dim lights, but not dark. Not noisy at all. Happy we went to this place! read more

Service was good, menu looks good, and the restaurant itself looks nice. But for the price, the food was really greasy and not very flavorful. We probably ate 20% of what we ordered and didn't even keep it for leftovers. It wasn't the worst I've had in the area, but it wasn't near the best even though it was priced above it. read more

We have been getting take out for the past three years, and we love it. Today we ate at the restaurant and this experience tops it off. Everything has been great. The food is delicious and the drinks hit the spot. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I give it 5 stars because our usual cravings for Pho and Calamari was very much satisfied. The broth was tasty and the breaded fried calamari was perfectly crispy and light. No msg was a plus!! Too bad it's 82 miles from home but we would drive all the way to Peabody from Central Mass to quench our cravings for Pho! read more

This review is for the customer service--after misplacing my ID I was amazed to find it in the mail just 2 days after I had dined at Sugarcane. They went above and beyond the call of duty to pay for postage and send it to me! And on top of this, the food was delicious. Thanks! read more

more consumer choices close to home? yes, please. i'm unaware of any other vietnamese restaurant in salem or peabody, never mind another good one. but after a chance drive by, sugar cane looked pleasantly inviting, and we stopped to check out their offering of vietnamese and chinese cuisines. we ordered four items (for 2 very very hungry people): a) the lettuce cups - these were very good. i had ordered these before from fresh taste of asia, and subsequently suffered some disappointment over an item that many of my friends ooh and ahh over. the lettuce cups from sugar cane, however, were definitely not disappointing. with hoisin sauce and hot sauce, you are served six lettuce leaves to wrap around a scrumptious mixture of minced chicken, mushrooms, onions, peanuts, and scallions. the chicken mixture smelled wonderful and tasted even better, especially due to the interesting contrast of texture of the lettuce, the chicken, and the nuts. (this appetizer dish led me to believe that fresh taste of asia has failed where sugar cane succeeds as a high quality asian sit down restaurant.) b) seafood pho - the broth from this pho was perfect. light, not overly fishy, but complete with a pleasant seafood aroma. seafood within the soup included squid, shrimp, octopus, fish balls, and imitation crab meat. nothing was overly chewy, as can often be the case with some seafood soups that serve squid or octopus. the noodles were also pretty par the course yummy. c) the pineapple fried rice - nice flavor of a yellow curry throughout the fried rice dish. plenty of chunks of pineapple and bites of white meat chicken. d) lobster with ginger and scallions! oh lobster and ginger and scallions. your pre-cut, saucy meat. there is never enough of you. this dish was cooked well, without any hint of chewiness. nice flavor of ginger, not overbearing as sometimes is the case. i look forward to the inevitably cold days approaching where i can call up sugar cane and order a bowl of their pho for delivery. (that's right, they deliver!) and i certainly plan to return here for a moderately priced, well cooked meal many many times. read more

I've been here several times and always been pleased. Sugar Cane sits on the site of what was once "Fortune Palace," which was a favorite of my parents and grandparents for years. From what I remember of the Palace and what I can see now at Sugar Cane, the decor has been greatly improved and the menu has slanted more towards a mixture between Vietnamese and Chinese food, rather than just Chinese food. The food is good, the prices are reasonable and it's very convenient for me. The service is hit-or-miss. I've had wonderful servers, and I've had servers who, because of the language barrier, have made things awkward. I wouldn't go here for take-out, as it's too expensive for that, but I would go here for dinner with very little arm-twisting. read more

I have only eaten at the Sugar Cane once, so maybe my opinion isn't justified, but my meal was very bland (to the point that I questioned if they gave me the correct dish). Also, the service was very slow (2 pm on a Tuesday afternoon). I found the decoration to be very pleasant and inviting. I will probably give the Sugar Cane another try, the owners have put too much work into it for my visit to be the norm. read more

Pete & I have been here twice now. The first time, I got the curried tofu triangles... amazing. Just the perfect kick of spice. Pete got the eggplant something or other... also pretty good, but not as delish at the curry. This trip, we also got the scorpion bowl. At $14, very decently priced. When we had our second trip this past Sunday, it was not actually at the top of our list for places to eat. We were driving home from NH and trying to find a place to eat in Beverly, but very unsuccessfully. Apparently that town loves God a bit too much and everything is closed on Sunday. BORING. Anyway, after we decided to move our Yelp search from Beverly to Peabody, I saw Sugar Cane. I remembered "damn, that place was pretty good." So we went. And I remembered correctly. Since it was lunch time, we got the vegetarian summer rolls with an AMAZING peanut sauce (SO MUCH YUM!). Then Pete ordered the curried tofu triangles. Even though there was the faintest hint of coconut, which he hates, he really loved this dish. This time, I ordered the vermicelli with tofu. It was absolutely banging. I really wanted to have some hot sauce on it, as I like it on... everything? But the server never came back to check on us, except when he was clearing the plates. LAME. Only then he asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks, which we did, but like, 10 minutes ago. Except we still got our second round anyway, because we enjoy our booze at noon. BOOZE Notes: domestic beer is hella cheap, only $3 for a Sam Adams is awesome! I don't think they actually used Grey Goose in the martini I ordered, as it didn't go down as smoothly as I am accustomed to. However, the drinks were strong and reasonably priced. Even though I never got my hot sauce, we will be back. Note: no, this isn't the most authentic Vietnamese place ever, but it's still good for what it is! read more

Sugar Cane provides a great combination of Chinese and Vietnamese food in an unlikely location, downtown Peabody. I think this is the best Chinese or Vietnamese food North of Boston, and better than most places there. The bar is small but fun, a great place to watch a game. The staff is friendly and efficient. You have to give Sugar Cane a try! read more

Local restaurant and great food and drink !!' Love Sugar Cane staff and service ! EXCELLENT

I really enjoyed this place! The waiter was very prompt and almost comically enthusiastic. I got the bun rieu, and just loved it. A very large portion, and yummy, I thought. One of my dining companions was far less impressed with what she ordered. The drinks were fantastic, in frosty glasses. The prices were crazy-low. I got a Bombay martini (read: glass of 100% top shelf booze) for $8.50. Never seen a decent martini for that price. The entrees were mostly under $10. I'll be back with the family for sure. read more

Crab Rangoon was ok as was the lol mein. I didn't like the general gau it was on the soggy side and very chewy. The wonton soup just trying the broth made me throw it out. On the hunt for a new place. read more

Far exceeded expectations....My husband and I visited Sugar cane with friends who are repeat visitors on Friday night for the first time and fell in love!!! We started by sharing Summer rolls, House Dumplings and Beef Luc Lac..I honestly dont know which one I loved more..all were incredibly fresh and flavorful.....clearly made with love. We both continued on and got the Vermicelli bowl with grilled shrimp.....the freshness and flavor blew us away...We are both extremly picky and very rarely go out to dinner because our expectations are often too high...We were so impressed with our meal we can't wait to go back! read more

I have become quite the regular at this spot. I finally have tried other menu items besides the pho and have to say I was quite impressed. The peppered seafood platter is quite possibly better than any other fried seafood dish I have had and I grew up on seafood. I also like their vermicelli bowl which is the perfect summer dish. The more and more you dine here the better the service becomes. I am now a fan. read more

I had the pad Thai, the beef chow foon, then banxeo and the egg rolls. EVERYTHING was delicious!! The banxeo is a little different to what I'm use to eating because of the mug bean. But it was crispy and very tasty. I have been here about 3 times now and have never been disappointed. read more

Great neighborhood spot. Vietnamese is their specialty and you can't go wrong with their Pho. They also have some of your typical Americanized Chinese food standards like crab rangoons, which are also very good. I also highly recommend their vermicelli bowls, which tastes lighter/healthier but you can get it loaded up with steak and chicken like I do. read more

This was our go to fav chinese, viet restaurant, until recently. They don't speak english, or understand it. It is tough to place an order when the clerk does not know what mushrooms or green beans are. They still have the best ribs on the bone, but they are getting smaller all the time. read more

My husband never met a bowl of pho he didn't like...until today. Keep in mind that he is Vietnamese and not exactly the target market I guess anyone who hasn't had better would like it. If you want pho, there is a less pretty but better tasting bowl up on Rte. 1 South. read more

Gross Chinese food. We ordered from here once per someone's reccomendation and the high yelp rating, never again! The delivery took almost an hour on a random late Wednesday night, no big game on TV which I would at least sympathize with the long wait if that was the case. The food was super greasy, beyond regular Chinese food greasy. The crab rangoons were gross and undercooked. The rice was bland, and just everything in the pu-pu platter was not good, we threw most of it away. Will not order from here again, and I'm not entirely sure if maybe we just had a bad experience and it really is good most of the time but it was enough to deter us from going back. read more

We went on a Wednesday night and had called a 6:00 pm reservation I was sure exactly why when we sat down but shortly there after the place was full so understood why our local hosts had done so. We ordered basil fried rice, garlic flavored pea tendrils, mandarin ginger shrimp, crispy aromatic beef, cashew pineapple chicken, triple delight, and a special chicken dish that I forget the name. I didn't try the triple delight but all the other dishes were quite tasty. My favorites were the shrimp and beef dishes. I enjoyed them the most due not only to the flavor but as I had not had similar dishes at any other places. The beef instead of being very thinly sliced was probably a half inch thick so it was crispy, tender, and had a good chew to it. Only thing I thought was odd was that no rice except the fried rice dish was served. Now none of us asked white rice either so not sure if there would have been a charge or not. Our hosts had been here several times and we're glad that we listened to their recommdation. We would go back again and I'd have even done it on back to back nights for those shrimp and beef dishes. read more

Their Pho is the best in the northshore!! Also service and staff are super friendly, funny, and courteous. I have been going there for years now. This is the perfect example of a restaurant business where the owner REALLY CARES about his customers. Just last night my 128 gig iphone 6 phone fell out of my pocket as i was getting back into my car. The phone was found, brought inside the restaurant, and the owner himself (because my license was in the phone case) well, at 1030 at night he surprised me and brought me the phone in....... Swampscott! 5 stars... once again the food is amazing too lol. read more

I was there with my family four of us had the Pho and my daughter decided on a General Gau that was a little different than the usual. The broth for the Pho was just hot water and the small bowl was just ridiculous everytime I put my spoon or chopsticks into the bowl water was coming over the sides of the bowl. Traditional Pho comes with extra vegetables on the side and you decide if you want additional ingredients added. My husband and I didn't even eat our bowls of noodles. If its not your specialty don't put it on the menu. It was such a waste of time and money. We went because of the stars it was given. I'm never going to trust that again. If you want Vietnamese Pho don't go to this place. read more
