I've never hired professional movers before, but after using these guys to move from MN to WI, I will never move any other way again. It's not 5-stars b/c it was pretty expensive ($2,500 to move a 2BR apartment from MN to WI) and b/c my bike trainer arrived broken, but the guys who showed up were super professional and it was far better than convincing a bunch of friends to haul my stuff across state lines. read more

Doug and his crew of five total guys were amazing. They packed and moved us across the neighborhood in 2 days into a five bedroom house. They were incredibly helpful, fun, kind, safe, and took excellent care of everything. Our move was half as long as we anticipated because they worked extra hard and changed the strategy to make it happen more efficiently for us on day one when they realized we had 3 young kids and wanted to get it done as quickly as possible. We used Suddath for a cross country move through our employer a couple years ago and had a really positive experience so we decided to use them for a local move last month. We again had a very positive experience - the staff were respectful of both our belongings and of us. As is inevitable when moving large furniture, they left a couple scuffs on our stairs' walls, but immediately sent us a check to fix the minor damage they left. I have hired many movers. We worked with this company in the past so had no reservations about hiring them again. I won't be hiring them again. My biggest concern about moving was our piano. The guy who moved us took it apart to an unbelievable level. I asked him about it when he was doing it and he assured me "this is how we do it". When it came time to reassemble the piano, he couldn't put it back together! I thought he was kidding! Sadly, no. Working with the internal staff to get this taken care of has been no picnic either. Did they fix it? No. They sent someone out to fix it, but he couldn't figure it out either. What is the end of the story? I didn't buy extra insurance coverage to protect me from Suddath's employees so I have to eat the cost of the repair. Buyer beware! read more

We have used 4 moving companies in the past 2 years. As moving companies go, Suddath is OK. ...But then, I am writing this review before they fix the broken items I have yet to submit. That is when one finds out how well the moving company sticks with you or bails and hands you over to the insurance companies. Sales was very good Communication was OK Driver and loading crews, at both ends, were great! Packing people were not very good !!! Not much else to say. We decided to go with Suddath after reading all of the positive reviews and after talking to Craig about some of the older items we had and he assured us that they would take good care of our furnishings and fragile items. They were a bit more expensive than other moving companies, but we wanted to pay extra for the special care. Three workers came in and did a good, efficient job of wrapping and carrying out the larger items and carefully packing the fragile items into the truck. All of the large furniture items were carried out by 2 workers. The bad part was when they delivered our possessions. Instead of 3 workers, only 2 came out to unload everything. When they took my work bench off the truck, one leg was busted off. Our 3 legged chiminea also had a welded leg broke off. Both workers said they didn't do the damage, it was done by someone else. Unpacking our boxes, we saw firsthand the damage that was done. Two of our bookcases had pieces splintered off. Two ceramic plates were broken. A crockpot was broken into pieces. All of these items were packed in foam (top and bottom) and individually wrapped in layers of bubble wrap. The only feedback we got from them was to contact Dave. On top of that, my wife had a special screwdriver (a Philips head with a black plastic slide on the shaft) that one of the workers took with them. Granted, this may have been an innocent mistake since they shared the counter as where my wife's tools were. She called about it and they said that since it was unique it wouldn't be hard to find and he would take care of it and get it returned or call us back. **Update** Well, Dave did as he said he would and he was able to deliver top notch customer service to make things right for us. While it was unfortunate that there was damage done to some of our possessions, they did the right thing and delivered on their promise to take care of us. My wife even got her screwdriver back, which was as we thought, an innocent mistake. Customer service means a lot to me and because of how they handled things, I upgraded my review rating on Suddath. They could have just blown me off but they stood behind their word and in these times, that means everything. read more

I have used movers for years and NEVER had such a terrible experience. I understand that in business there are errors sometimes or the wrong information is passed along. But every sigle piece of information this company gave me about my move was false. It resulted in having to change travel dates, hotel stays, etc. It's been 11 days and they still haven't delivered my stuff. Here are all the issues that I have also filed with the better business bureau 1. Moving date was incorrect in the system and I had to navigate multiple calls between the movers and my account rep to get it fixed so they'd show up on the correct date, although I received email confirmation and two phone calls verifying my move date (January 28th, 2013) 2. Movers didn't show up when confirmed although I received two phone calls and an email confirming the time. They were 5 hours late and the account rep never gave me call to give me a heads up. 3. I was told that the movers would give me the date when my possessions will be delivered on Monday, January 28th, then again that I would receive this information on Wednesday, January 30th, and didn't not receive this information until Friday, February 1st. 4. Due to consistent misinformation, I asked for a new account rep. 5. I was told movers would deliver my possessions between 8-10 AM on Thursday, February 7th. The time was changed to 11 AM- 12 PM and I was given no indication of this change until I called although I was very clear that I needed a specific time to manage elevator services. It is already afternoon and they still haven't arrive. The movers themselves were great, but I would not recommend using this company. read more

Wonderful company. On 7/30/12 I moved my 94 year old mother from her 1 BR apt in Wayzata to Scottsdale, AZ. Barrett's [United Van Lines] $4000 estimate was $1000 less than Beltman [North American]. That included full replacement insurance. They did ALL the packing. They were on time on both ends and very professional. Two items were broken and they are taking care of them promptly. And get this: I just received an email notifying me that they are refunding $311 as the final charge was less than the estimate. read more

Barrett helped me move from California to Minneapolis this summer. Their rates were competitive to other moving companies that I talked to. In fact, their rate was the lowest. They didn't actually pack up my things in Cali - that was contracted out to a local company which they transferred my belongings to United which trucked across the country. Barrett kept my stuff in storage for 2 months. In the end, they delivered on time, everything showed except a small shelf and 2 inexpensive lamps were damaged during the move. Barrett had me file a claim for the lost and damaged items, and then they sent me a check. Super easy and fast. Also, wanted to specifically say that Katie Hambrock at Barrett was the best! She was prompt in all her replies, answered all my stupid questions, was super patient. She even called during each of my packing/unpacking process to make sure that everything was going well. From the customer service/sales rep named Mary Ann to the pickup movers in Minneapolis - I am impressed and would highly recommend them to anyone moving in the Minneapolis/Madison/Milwaukee/Chicago area. They were on-time, courteous, took extra care of my valuables and navigated narrow downtown streets (to find parking) like pros. I moved from St. Paul, MN to Houston, TX. Corporate relocation selected Suddath for me, and I had a great experience moving with them. I've only had one prior experience shipping things with a friend. It was with a different moving company, and my friend was the person who had to deal with them. She said they were basically unreachable. Also, the movers were late, and had to store our stuff for several weeks. Suddath was great in terms of communication --- lots of emails informing me of what I need to know/do in preparation for moving and when the movers would be arriving at my origin and destination. They were pretty fast with the shipment too. Everything was packed well, and dishware/glassware was wrapped well and arrived in the same condition (nothing broken). read more

Our move went great because we really got to know our driver, Pedro. It was confusing that so many companies were involved (Mayflower, Suddath, Mohawk Moving, Boulevard) but everyone we spoke to was very helpful. Our items arrived so quickly it made our cross country move a bit challenging to beat the moving van to our new home. We would hire Mayflower again and instead of packing our own boxes it would be worth the investment to have Mayflower pack for us. read more

Only rating 1 star because zero stars not available. AWFUL STRESSFUL experience - AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!!!!!! WORST MOVING COMPANY EVER!!!!!! Worst customer service. This move was the worst we have experienced, mostly because of unqualified movers who were not physically able to lift, carry, do stairs, or other tasks required of physical labor workers such as movers. When the 4 obese men (2 of whom were also in their 50s/60s) arrived for the move, I thought it must be a joke, like I was on candid camera or something. They were obviously completely unfit to perform any moving activities. As a result of this, the move took 13 hours when it was estimated to take 7-8 hr. In addition, and more importantly to us, we had a long list of items that were damaged in the move, including damage to our brand new home. I have moved with professional movers 7 times before, and I have never had this extensive of damage. In addition, when I did have damage in the past, it was addressed within days. We notified our office contact of the issues we were experiencing throughout the move so that they were aware. After receiving the invoice (65% higher than estimated!), we complained that we did not feel we should have to pay for the movers' incompetence when our contents had not changed since the move was estimated and there was no rational reason the move of our 2-bedroom condo should have taken that long. Our contact sent us a slightly revised invoice, which was still not satisfactory. We emailed them a detailed list of reasons as to why the invoice was unacceptable given the abysmal moving and packing performance. We were told they would review it again and send us a revised invoice. Over a month after our move, after I emailed to inquire about the status, we were told they were going to send a revised invoice. By two months after our move, we still had not received the revised invoice. Without an invoice, we could not pay our bill. Without paying our bill, the claims dept could not even contact us regarding the damage that occurred during the move. Although, we were not told this at the time. We were told to contact the claims dept and that they didn't know why we hadn't heard from them. So we did. We left voicemail after voicemail with the claims dept and received NO response from the claims dept! We finally received the invoice after daily calls/emails from us. It was not satisfactory but they would not budge further and for our own sanity, we chose to pay it and move on with our lives because this was such a horrendous experience. It was 3-4 mos before we received any sort of compensation for our damage, and our items were valued at 60 cents/lb, which is ridiculous. This is because we elected not to purchase additional coverage; however, we were misled as to what the basic insurance coverage included and were never clearly told how our items would be valued. A majority of the damage was in the frames and glass of framed artwork. One frame itself cost $200. We had about 20 damaged items in the move, probably totaling close to $1000 of damage, and we received a laughable compensation check of $237. Addition details: Packing: A ridiculous amount of paper was used to pack the boxes and the items were packed completely illogically. The result was that an insane # of cartons was used to pack our 2-bdrm condo, and how do they charge, you ask? BY CARTON, OF COURSE!! On top of that, unpacking was a nightmare because of how illogically and inefficiently everything was packed and how poorly labeled. For example: (1) there was a large box filled with cleaning supplies, a clothes iron, a clothes steamer, TONS of packing paper, and 2 rugs, and the box was labeled "rugs;" (2) the lid to the teapot was not packed anywhere near the actual teapot itself, leading us to search the endless amounts of paper multiple times trying to find the lid (huge waste of time), only to later find the lid wrapped in a large amount of paper in a totally unrelated box; (3) while 2 glass items from kitchen boxes were poorly packed and were shattered in the move, other random items made of plastic or more durable materials (e.g., chopsticks and plastic flatware) were wrapped in a comical amount of paper -- completely illogical and wasteful. Moving: One mover was the laziest and most useless person on both packing day and moving day. He talked a lot and did not work while he talked. He paced a lot. He complained a lot. He also packed the kitchen, and there were 2 shattered glass items from those boxes. All movers were obese and slow and appeared to really struggle physically with the demands of the job. Had we actually had 3 movers who were in decent or even average physical shape, we have no doubt that the move could have been completed as estimated. The most unprofessional moving company we have ever used. This was our third long distance move, so we had other companies to compare it to. We paid more money to go with the big name (United - Suddath) because we were moving 1,000 miles and didn't want anything to go wrong. Everything went wrong. We were called on the very last day of our 11 day delivery window and informed that they weren't sure where our belongings were. For an entire day they weren't able to tell us where our stuff was. After we called and called and demanded some information, they lied and said they tried to deliver it but that we weren't home. This was false, and they finally admitted the driver never drove our belongings to the new location. He just didn't drive our stuff to the new location, at any point during the transit window, or the delivery window. We were also over charged, and we are still waiting for a credit. The amount of lying that happened, and the unprofessional manner in which the employees handled a bad situation, was absolutely astounding. Not only will we never use Suddath again, but we will never use United again. This was the worst experience ever. We understand that things can easily go wrong during a move, but we never once received legitimate responses to any issues, we were never informed of anything in a timely manner, and it was very difficult to get anyone on the phone to answer questions, or return voicemails. I waited a few weeks to write this review, giving the company time to make things right and compensate us appropriately. They did not fix things how we asked them to, and we are probably just about the most unsatisfied customers they've ever had. I would suggest using anyone else you possibly can for moving, not Suddath. It sounds like another review below had a similar experience. Wish I had read that prior to using them. read more

I have used Barrett twice. The first time I had a very good experience, but the second was an absolute disaster. First, the company failed to include in their "straight" price estimate local permits and shuttle requirements (fairly obvious given I was moving to Boston), which thoroughly delayed my delivery date, and today, I received an additional bill for (11 months later) for these services..... Not a great option, not a good option, not a fair option. read more

Please note that I am not saying that this company provide a bad "move". Actually, I agreed with all others that they did provide a very experienced packing and moving. The driver was very careful about handling my stuff which I really appreciated. My issue is the final bill that they charge me. I have asked them to come to my house to estime with 2 prices: 1). They pack everything 2). I pack everthing thing, so that I know my max. expenses for the move because I pay for all the move myself. They did this twice. Yet, after the move they ask more than 25% of the original "they pack everything" max. quote. Reason being they counted all boxes inculding about 1/3 of them that I already packed myself. Typically, for a long distance move as such (more than 2000miles) the bill was paid by company/employer thus no one will ask for details about who packed which boxes. The employer will simply pay everything billed. My case is not the same becasue I handle the bill myself and I merely wanted to share my experience with everyone what has happened to me. For those never had "any" problem with this company, I am glad for you. For those, who will/might encounter the same issue in the future, do not feel bad because you are not alone. read more

This was our 4th professional move. Prior to this, we have had one excellent experience and one lousy experience. Suddath was really very good. I would have given 4 1/2 stars if I could have. For starters, we are very particular about our "stuff". In fact, we are so meticulous and careful that we moved our most valuable, treasured or irreplaceable objects on our own in a Penske truck. That being said, there was much that we necessarily had to entrust to the movers. We got quotes from about 5 different local companies. They varied quite a bit in price and we ended up choosing Suddath because of good pricing, prior good experience with United, prior bad experience with Mayflower, and because Suddath had the least negative comments. So, with all of that being said, how did the move go and how did they perform? Overall, it was a very good, positive experience. We asked for a re-quote, as we had removed a sizable portion of belongings ourselves. Mike was absolutely professional and expeditious in accommodating us--even scheduling the move in a very sudden, quick time frame. He is a super nice guy, too. The packers were wonderful and we have not had a single issue with any of the fragile items that were boxed up. They were very well wrapped. The loading crew in Minneapolis was the best I've ever seen. These young guys were efficient, amazingly strong, very careful and respectful of our contents, and worked really hard. They brought in a 3rd party crating service for some special items, such as washer/dryer and a long glass top for a dining table. These guys were awesome at origin, so-so at destination (for uncrating). The success of your move depends very much on "who you get" at each end. That is the difficult aspect of hiring a mover, because the loaders and unloaders are not employees of the moving company, they simply contract with them for individual jobs. This is where the driver becomes important, as he is the manager of the move and the manager of these independent crews. Our driver was a great guy, firmly in control of his crews at both ends, and did a super job. So--all of that being said, my only complaint was with the unloaders at the destination. We were moving into a brand new house. When they arrived to unload they immediately put a path of cardboard down on the wood floor, and put a strip of plastic through each carpeted room. We felt this was inadequate, as they were wheeling heavy carts all over the wood floor, and walking all the way into carpeted rooms to set boxes on areas of uncovered carpet. We simply and nicely requested, at the outset, that they put more cardboard on the wood floor and more plastic in the carpeted areas, so that as they walked into these rooms repeatedly and then set dirty boxes down on the carpet, those areas would also be protected and remain clean. Also requested cardboard over the threshold of the sliding doors where they were coming in off the patio (and rolling heavy carts over) so that the rails wouldn't be damaged. Somehow this was seen as insulting to them and their years of experience. The driver calmed the situation down and two of the guys were great. One pouted half the day and the fourth guy never got over it. Overall, they worked extremely hard, accommodated our requests and got the job done without any more negative issues. Of course, this will always be an issue with any moving company because, while you know you spent a lot of hard-earned money on your stuff, the movers have no awareness of that and place very little value on it. Also, your idea of "be careful" can be, and usually is, completely different from a mover's idea of the concept. For instance, if you are a bicycling enthusiast and you have an $8,000 bicycle, you are hyper aware of the level of care the piece is going to need. But in the eyes of the guy unloading, carrying and unwrapping it, it is a $100 bike from WalMart. You just have to be on top of these issues and let them know what level of care you require. We are glad we moved some special items ourselves. So...overall, Suddath was a really great company to work with. If I had to do another move, I would definitely give them a call. They worked really hard to get our business, but seemed to really care about keeping us happy along the way. As a company, they seem to have a really cohesive, unified team with a great corporate culture and attitude. We had no negative issues at all that needed to be resolved, and no claims for damages. That is amazing. (As it was a company paid move, I can't speak to cost except to say that they were definitely not the most expensive out there.) We hired Suddath/United Van Lines to move When the salesman originally came to our house he explained what Suddath/UVL offers for the moving process. That they take pride in protecting client's property and explained all the awards Suddath/UVL has received. We discussed how the company was made up of employees not contractors, that a moving tractor with "air ride" trailer would be used to transport our belongs, that the truck would come to our house with the same driver that will deliver our household items from Minnesota to Florida so we could meet him and discuss the move. We were told the driver would be in contact with us along the way to give location updates and his expected arrival time. We were also assigned a move coordinator to work with us on the move. He also explained that our credit card would be pended the day of loading and the final payment be charged on the day of delivery. On the contract we were given guaranteed delivery date window. our household goods from Minneapolis to Orlando Below is what actually occurred. * On June 13th a small truck from the local terminal arrived with a local crew to load. This was not the long haul driver nor the moving truck. At this time they told us our items would be unloaded at the terminal and reloaded into a moving truck. * Our delivery window dates were from June 19-24. Beginning June 19 we were to be given daily status updates. On June 19th we received no call or status update. * On June 20th we finally called UVL, after we had not heard from anyone. Our primary move coordinator told us she would be on vacation the previous week and a fill in would be calling us. When the fill in coordinator returned our call, she told us our belongings were yet to be loaded. * On June 21st and June 22nd the status calls told us our items were still not loaded and no driver assigned. Our items were still sitting in Minneapolis. * On June 23rd the status call told us our items were still not loaded and that they would be loaded on Monday June 26th and leave for Florida. Missing our guaranteed delivery window. No driver assigned yet. * On June 26th the status call was that it got loaded, but had not left MN as we were told on Friday, June 23rd. No driver assigned yet, still sitting in Minneapolis. * On June 27th the status call was that the truck was going to St Paul, MN to pick up another load. Still not leaving from Minnesota. No driver assigned yet. * On June 28th we were told they had leased a driver (contractor) and leased a trailer. This was not our long haul driver, nor a moving trailer but a freight trailer. We would possibly be able to be unloaded at our Monday July 3rd . * June 29th and June 30th we were told the other load in front of ours had to go to Sarasota first, and then come back to Orlando. Our coordinator spoke to her GM and he diverted it to Orlando to take control of the load. We would not have our delivery now on Monday July 3rd but should arrive on Wednesday July 5th. * On July 3rd we were told the truck broke down and now our delivery would be Thursday July 6th. * July 5th we were told the delivery crew would contact us Thursday morning with an arrival time. * On July 6th our household belonging finally arrived in a freight trailer, not a moving van trailer as we contracted with Suddath/UVL. * On July 8th we picked up the motorcycle in Orlando. * We were told the final charges would be billed/paid upon the delivery date which was July 8th, instead our Visa card was billed and paid to Suddath/UVL on July 2nd. * The delivery staff was a local sub-contracted driver and crew, not employees of Suddath/UVL as we were originally told by our salesman. Many items were damaged and scratched as well as a piece of audio equipment that was crushed. We can only assume this was due to the number of times it was loaded and unloaded into a freight trailer vs a moving trailer. We ended up filing a damage claim with UVL totally almost $5000. read more

The move went great and the movers were very professional, but the quoting process was disappointing. I had to have a third party (arranged through the Suddath) crate a large piece of glass that was covering a dresser. It wasn't until after the move that I learned from looking at my bill that the cost to crate the glass was originally under estimated due to the estimator failing to accurately measure the glass. I would think that measuring glass is pretty basic and simple. Disappointed that the measurement was wrong, that the error was passed on to me as a customer, and with the lack of documentation/explanation for the charges. read more

I did my move from MN to PA. Their quotes were reasonable, provided me with boxes at my home so that I can pack some stuff myself. On the moving day, came up with 4 people and got that done. You have to just monitor a bit carefully. Did a good inventory list, coordinated well with the operations. It look more than a week to arrive at the destination, which is within the SLA anyway. Throughout the process the coordination was good and I could get the information when required. The billing and closing was done well and even today after one year when I asked something, they immediately responded. Recommended. read more

I truly don't understand the negative reviews this company has received but I suppose every move and every driver is different. The moving business must be so good Barrett doesn't need or care about new business. Scheduled an estimate yielding to their schedule, not mine, took time off from work to be at what would have been a good sized job for them (4500 sq ft home) not 5 miles from their offices. No one showed and after 1/2 hour I called Eliza with whom I made the appointment. She said someone double booked the estimator (she's in charge of this) and that I would need to re-schedule for Friday. I very politely explained that taking more time off for this would be a problem and if they couldn't get someone out today as promised, I would need to move on to another company. She then hung up on me. I called Bill Johnson the GM to report this and have not even received an apology for what I consider rude, unprofessional behavior. If they are this unreliable and unprofessional for an estimate, what would the move be like. Glad I found out now!. read more

When the movers arrived at our house we did a walk through with them. They asked us what we didn't want packed so we told them. One basket in the kitchen and two baskets and 2 suitcases in the bedroom. These baskets and suit cases had my husband's blood pressure pills and the clothes and other items the three of us would need over the next 4 days before they delivered our items to our new house. We asked them where they were and they told us they packed them. When I asked where they were they didn't know and made no offer to find them. So I had to go buy clothes and other essential times from Walmart to get us through ($240 that didn't need to be spent) and my husband had to get some new blood pressure pills. When they brought our items to our new home many boxes were misplaced and Paul (the one with 30years experience) was very RUDE (and actually kind of arrogant) to one of the young men who had only been working with the company for approximately two weeks.
