Handsome Dan's lives up to it's namesake bait shop title!! It's that truly great, midwestern feel…read moresandwich shop that you get before your day on the boat, the kind that keeps you going all day, and keeps you coming back for more! After saying "we need to go there" at least 30 times, we finally went there and boyyy howdy it did not disappoint! The Cuban and club were 10/10 perfect! The bread was so fresh, crispy where it needed to be, and buttery in all the right places. It was a perfectly balanced sandwich ratio, not too thick, not too thin, and came with chips or potato salad. The in-house beer is great, and there's something for anyone's tastes, plus non alcoholic options. We sat outside with our pups on the dog friendly patio, which is fully covered and shaded, with tons of great seating options. I recommend going into the shop and seeing every thing they have to offer that isn't listed on the menu, plus the GREAT beer tap and can selections they have in store!

Handsome Dans was on our list because of all the online and social media hype. It's tucked away in…read morethe back next to Stargazer in a brewery/ warehouse off Springdale and Airport area. The parking is shared and gets packed in the evening or you have to pay to park if you are unable to find anything in the lot or on the street. Handsome Dans has a sign directing you to the back where they are located. The vibe is true to a bait shop/diner it's casual with a rustic feel, they have a large covered patio adjacent to Stargazer bar. I highly suggest sitting outside if possible because the inside does get a bit claustrophobic and smokey when it's packed and they are smashing paninis on the press with no proper kitchen overhead vents. The type of greasy smoke you get when you are making super buttery sandwiches on a hot press. The sandwiches are ok but not something I would go out of my way to have ,our kids liked the hotdogs and Frito pies which were also kind of "upper class" gas station quality. Most of the stuff here is food that probably tastes way better after drinking several beers. It's like any normal sandwich you could make at home and toss in a panini press to be honest. Really good beers on tap and friendly staff who seemed to disappear to the back quite a bit and came back confused. They didn't know if they had already given me my food because I was ordering and paying for extra food after more people in our party arrived. They literally saw my food I already had on the table from my previous order and thought they gave me double of what I ordered hahaha. I can't make a judgment because I have no clue what they kept dispersing to the back for but can just say the confusion was real, LOL. All together if I had to come back it be because someone I knew wanted to try it. Otherwise for me it's a one and done. I got the pictures I stood next to a sign ,I had the Signiture sandwiches, now I'm moving on. I can say I've been there done that. I'm guessing that a college crowd or just being a single person who just wants to be amongst people that this is the type of lowkey place to go if you're not into the typical Longhorn hangouts. You stop in ,have some beers, eat a low budget ingredient expensive panini sandwich and chill till you have to call yourself a Waymo cause the beer is good and strong.

From smoked pastrami to smoked bologna, I can't say enough good things about their meat selection…read more The pastrami and brisket had differing but great flavors that make it easy to order both even though they're the same cut. Both were well smoked, had the fat Smokey and rendered down, and was tender without falling apart. Their smoked sausage selection was also fantastic. I was blown away by the jalapeño cheddar sausage because most places I've been to have that cheese and jalapeño in chunks but not here. It was rendered into the sausage without changing the texture and mixed in perfectly. Their smoked bologna was also something unique to me as I wouldn't normally order it but boy was it good. Less salty than the commercialized stuff and significantly better bologna flavor. Their ribs seem to be brined with something sweet because even without sauce, it was sweet, tender, post oakey and with their own flavors that make it a must have. The last thing I got there to share with friends was the TX cheesesteak made with brisket. Not too salty, super savory and when you add their hot sauce to it, it created a perfect balance. They also have some fantastic collard greens that are cooked with pastrami and/or brisket depending on their offerings. Because they're also a deli, they have some in house pickled vegetables that are a nice contrast to their meats. Their potato salad was good but didn't really stick out. Last but not least, their baked beans were not my cup of tea but my friends liked the flavor but wished the beans were a little softer. Finally, don't skimp out on their deserts. We had their browned butter chess pie and boy was it worth it. It was buttery, almondy and silky. My friend also got their cheesecake and said great things about it. Their service and ambiance was quite nice there. Their manager met up with us and even though we gave him some trouble about not having ribs yet, he got those out to us when he said he could and also told us about the history of the restaurant. Super friendly and allowed us to have a great time there. Plenty of seating but I'd recommend getting there early if you have a group. All in all, great varied offerings from meats to sandwiches to deserts. Go check them out!

OVERVIEW: I tried to pick up my online order from Mum Foods, but turns out someone stole my order…read more Bummer, but whatever - this is something that's usually an easy fix. We're human - shit happens, and mistakes are inevitable. But it's how people react that speaks volumes. **What surprised me was how unnecessarily rude the Mum employee was about it.** Orders are left on Mum's counter for DoorDash, Toast, Grubhub, and Seamless customers and delivery drivers to grab without a Mum employee checking order confirmation emails. If someone steals another customer's order, the *normal* response is to confirm I'm really the person who placed the order, then say "Oh sorry about that, looks like someone else took your order. We'll get you squared away with a replacement ASAP. In the meanwhile, could you please contact DoorDash to let them know?" ISSUE: Instead, the employee expediting orders was crazy defensive and rude about a situation that was no way my fault. TIMELINE: - I placed a pick up order via DoorDash at 12pm. I arrived at Mum's pickup area at 12:15pm. - When I tell the employee expediting orders my name, he says "Yeah, it was already picked up," and walks away. - When he returns, I explain I'm the person who placed the order, but I didn't pick it up. - The man says, "Like I SAID, it was already picked up," so I hold up the email on my phone, and say "I can prove I placed the order, but I don't have my food." - He replies, "Yeah, the order was sitting there for a long time. Someone already picked it up." - I tell him "I don't know what I'm supposed to do with this information. I paid for my order, but I don't have any food," and he tells me I need to contact DoorDash. - I tell him "I'll contact DoorDash, but they can only give me a refund. I'd like my food?" Only then does he tells the staff to get me a new order and tells me "LOOK, we're getting you your food."

We showed…read moreup a little past 8:30 pm to no line and got ourselves some beers served in mugs and sat at two seats by the window facing East 6th. The bar service is pretty snappy for the amount of people coming through, which was impressive, and their drinks are on par with the prices at most spots on East 6th. I picked up on the music at Mother's Ruin quickly. Though you have your classic bar anthems of Timbaland and Nelly Furtado, I also heard Method Man, The Game, and Kanye West, and a classic Beastie Boys and Q-Tip joint. They just play music on an iPad on Spotify. That's sick. The line to get in slowly grew and by 10:00 pm there was a line all the way to the edge of the building. My buddy and I had the UT-UCLA game playing on my phone and multiple people would come by and watch it and chat it up with us. It felt like the people inside were cooler than your typical bar. Not just a bunch of random ragers. The feeling of the joint with the windows, the wrap-around bar, and the low lighting makes the place feel very New York. I think it's a cool spot. Their food seems decent in price but looks really good, so I want to come back and try something of their menu. They have an award for the best brunch served in a bar in Austin too which is oddly specific, but go off! It's a very casual and conversational spot in Austin that I found myself lost in for a few hours. RIYL: A NYC-style bar with many windows to gaze out of.

Mother's fit the bill perfectly. On a Monday afternoon, the vibe is low-key with a few out-of-towners, regulars, and me enjoying cocktails. I'm sure the nighttime vibe is opposite. High-end whiskey options are sparse except for Eagle Rare (surprise?). They do have some signature cocktails, such as the Bathroom Buddy, made with Tito's Vodka, hazelnut, espresso liqueur, brown sugar, and cold brew. Interesting that they do not offer more local beers. I settled for a good, strong Old Forrester pour. They do have some decent food options geared toward satisfying your late-night cravings. I did see the taco bowl, and it looked delicious. , For a lazy Monday afternoon, Mother's was a great find!

I called to see if Paperboy was open and if they had a long wait. There was a recording that said to text only. I texted but didn't receive a response. So we went to check it out. When we walked in we weren't greeted with a "hi how are you?" We just got a cold stare from the hostess and a "We're at full capacity". That's it. It was around 2:20 and they close a 3 pm so it wasn't like we were coming in at 5 minutes before closing. When we left, my daughter even said that girl was mean. If you don't like people then maybe find a job where you aren't face to face with customers. Austin certainly has changed. I've been here for over 25 years. I don't know if it's now an East Austin thing to be snooty and treat people rudely, but we went to Lou's Barton Springs last week with our dog and it was completely different experience. They were welcoming and the employees were all super friendly and nice. My daughter and I enjoyed our experience there and never again will we step into Paperboy East and be treated that way. I'd like better experiences for my kid that was born and raised in here Austin and don't want to subject her to places where we will be treated badly. BTW The right thing to have done is smile, say "good afternoon, I'm sorry but we are at full capacity. Thank you for coming I and please try us another time." It's really not hard. It's called human decency.
