These are all based on past experiences, so there is certainly some validity to these judgements. Sometimes we are right, sometimes we are wrong. But our ideas of how things should be, and are, often align. I was judging the hell out of this cover. I didn't even want to see the author or the title page or the table of contents. I was in the middle of nowhere SC and starving. I had been looking for somewhere to eat for the last hour but Francis Marion National Forest isn't exactly Times Square. It was nothing but trees for miles. Side note: when driving through uninhabited places like this (my cell phone had no signal for most of an hour) I always wonder, morbidly perhaps, if there are any dead bodies out there? Surely there was some Ted Bundy acolyte that decided to follow in the steps of his mentor, take a hostage, and dispose of the body. Am I the only one thinking this? I often wonder and plot how I could get away with the perfect crime. What else am I going to think about for 60 minutes? I pulled into the parking lot and liked what I saw. The place looked fairly new. The asphalt in the parking lot was still cooling from just being poured, the signs and lights that adorned the exterior were bright and new, good stuff. The interior represented more of the book cover I was imagining. A little run down. It was cold outside so the buffet steamers had the place as humid as Key West in July. I could just hear the moisture penetrating and settling in the carpet and ceilings and window panes. I sat at the bar and chose the buffet for the meal. Remember, I had just contemplated the perfect crime (and solved the mystery, btw), so my brains and body were depleted. I saw a whole new set of covers to judge at the buffet line. And I will be honest, it looked like I was about to read War and Peace while high on marijuana: does plain and arduous ring a bell? The food was actually pretty damn tasty. Nothing blew my mind but nothing made me want to hurl insults or regret my decision to dine here. The fried chicken, as buffet fried chicken often tastes, was dry and chewy. Was this a product of the grueling buffet environs or a product of poor cooking? I lean toward the former because everything else was A-OK. Bonus points for having black eyed peas, a true southern delicacy. All in all a pretty good place. Nothing was five star but nothing was one star. Outside of the 2.5 star chicken, I give it a solid 4. I had the mac and cheese, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, green beans, and even the cake was ok. If caught in the muck and mire of the Swamp Loggers haven, I would come here again.

Yet some fellow Yelpers stated that it was only serving food to go. Nope. We need to sit and eat! Hence we ended up at McCabe's. Thank the heavens. The food heavens. It's a small unassuming place in Manning. I have no idea what else may be in Manning. Look, I didn't even know Manning was a place before today. Trust me. Stop in Manning. The food is served buffet style, but the incredibly friendly staff actually puts the food on the plate for you. We each had the all you can eat dinner. Because why not? There's lots of side choices, I had the "dirty" rice with hash on it. Honestly I can't tell you what's in the hash or how the rice is made, but it was amazing. The collard greens are some of the best I ever had, and the slaw, while a bit sweet for my taste, was still really good. There were also yams, okra, green beans, cabbage and stewed tomatoes. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. The pulled pork is phenomenal. On the table is Carolina bbq sauce (vinegar based. Not for everyone but i enjoy it). There is also fried chicken. Ok, I thought, I'll try it just to be nice. Holy Cow. Unbelievably good fried chicken! Get it. The drinks are limited to tea (sweet and unsweet), lemonade and water. In addition to the bbq, the hospitality you will encounter here is a dying art form - and it's genuine . The McCabe family seems to truly love what they do and it shows through the quality of the food , the great hospitality and the long line of folks waiting to get a taste of their addictive bbq! I personally love a bbq joint that keeps it simple . First, you are served barbecue the way the McCabe family thinks it should be eaten. There isn't a selection of sauces on the table for you to choose from . There's one sauce available here, and it works because it's delicious. It's a vinegar and pepper sauce that is slightly sweet. It's also got a just-right kick of heat; it's not so hot that you can't enjoy the sauce. And the pulled pork, is so mouth-watering perfect, it would be amazing without any sauce. Secondly, although it's a buffet there's only a handful of items to choose from and every single item seems carefully prepared with the greatest attention to the flavor profiles of each dish which leads to all the food on the buffet being absolutely delicious. The perlo is addictive - being raised on perlo I'm willing to give credit where credit is due and these McCabe folks have some secrets up their sleeves because whatever is in that perlo will hook ya, line and sinker ! I'm not even a fried chicken fan but the fried chicken here is something not to be missed! The texture , juiciness and flavor are out of this world - The real stars, though, are the wood-cooked pork, which is pulled into long strands and dressed with that peppery vinegar sauce I mentioned earlier , and the rich, savory hash and rice, South Carolina's iconic barbecue side. The pork is savory with a subtle smoky flavor that is just perfect . Do not miss McCabe's. This place is a culinary gem and a must for any bbq fan. So I hung up and drove there like they said. When I got to the drive-thru and tried to order a fish and shrimp plate, I was then told they weren't cooking fish or shrimp anymore tonight. That would've been helpful to know when I called. I use to enjoy this place but things have changed and i will never be back again. It honestly felt like the owner wasn't there, because the service and communication were way off compared to what you'd expect. Just a frustrating experience overall.

I could see the ladies in the back make sandwiches, the shelves were all stocked with great value brand bread and all kind did other items. To say your a cafe and then serve Walmart store brand food is very disappointing to customers. The iced coffee was $7.99 which is way higher than Starbucks and the cup was mostly ice. I am all for supporting mom and pop small businesses!!! But, I also wouldn't do it at the expense of quality. I do not recommend unfortunately. The owner should consider better quality supplies.
