Used to go to Submarina all the time as a kid back in its heyday when there were multiple locations throughout North County San Diego. Nowadays if I'm in town and and in the mood for a sandwich I'll stop by this location for a bite. The store itself is generally not too busy whenever I go. Service for me has usually been timely and friendly. I still order the roast beef and provolone on a extra large sub and get it with all the veggies. Taste-wise, the sandwich is still as I remember it as a kid. Simple flavors and fresh ingredients. What keeps me from coming back very often is how much the price of an extra larg sub sandwich has increased. It's almost $20 now as of the time of this review. We have been coming here for years and years, it's one of our favorite lunch spots. Today we learned that they no longer serve any sliced bread except sourdough. One of the things I loved about Submarina was the delicious, fresh sliced squaw, rye and wheat breads. If I wanted my sandwich on a roll, I would go to Subway! I don't go there because I want SLICED BREAD. It seems insane to me that a sandwich shop doesn't have sliced bread. Another favorite lunch spot crossed off the list. read more

Needless to say, I'm never going back to this Submarina again. Neither of those 2 should be making $20 an hour. Slow, unfriendly, place was uninviting. I should have just walked out when I saw the long line. No one was being greeted when they walked in. There was a person waiting for door dash and when I started to get closer to the order counter. 2 people left. Even waiting I had my order online for urban café. I should have just sent yes because it took about the same about of time. Plus I really wanted submarina. I was about to order my toppings and the cashier(kid) was ringing up the lady in front of me with cash and touching the register. Does he change his gloves?? Of course not. He then begins to touch my sandwich with those same gloves. Everyone here needs to be retrained because if I was the health department walking in on my lunch break. I LOVED the sandwiches I've tried here, the employees were extremely helpful & eager to please! I was deeply grateful that they modified the hot pastrami sandwich to make it a Reuben sandwich (my #1 favorite sandwich; Arby's Reuben is Outstanding, Excellent, but there's no Arby's nearby anymore, so there's much less opportunity to enjoy a Reuben sandwich). My other sandwich was delicious too! It was a cold sub sandwich, like a Hero sandwich. I can't emphasize enough how friendly & helpful the two employees were. I was the only customer (it was late evening), no one was dining there at the time, although there were plenty of tables and chairs to accommodate a lot of customers if necessary, so that was good, (I miss booths!!! Please consider using booths when remodeling! It's so cozy to dine in a booth; it encourages personal interactions & intimate/deeper conversations, & sitting in chairs at open tables just steals that opportunity for closeness with any others with whom a person dines), Absolutely 5 Star!!! Actually I thought the food was good, not great. I ordered an Italian sub, regular size. The bread was fresh and soft. They had an abundance of ingrediances (tomatoes, pickles, etc). The meat and cheeses were very fresh tasting. As well as having a large variety of sauces. I just use vinaigrette and oil. There were three people working in the front. Two making sandwiches and a cashier. They were quite efficient and kept the line moving. I didn't feel the wait was long. I ate at the resturant. It was very clean, simply decorated but pleasing. This certainly was a more pleasant experience than most of the subways I've eaten. Overall I'd go back. The sandwich was satisfying and plentiful enough. read more

I don't know what happened to this Submarina, but what a disaster! I am so embarrassed that I raved about Submarina having such great sandwiches to my friend. The sandwiches were very minimal. One slice of cheese and two slices of ham? Such a tiny amount of mayo I couldn't even taste it and using the heel of the loaf of squaw bread was unnecessary. There was plenty of lettuce, though. We were the only customers and it took FOREVER to get our sandwiches. To add insult to injury, it cost me $14.00 plus tip!! Never again!!! The only good thing was the piped in music. I was a little nervous about coming here with the poor reviews but we were in the neighborhood and a sandwich was sounding good. I felt a little more optimistic when I saw the Yelp Elites were all fans. We ordered a Cali and Italian to share and thought it was tasty. I love a soft, pillowy hoagie roll and the ingredients were tasty as well. We got everything on it and the girls loaded them up with toppings. Submarina is my new favorite sandwich shop. The ingredients are of high quality, fresh, and tasty. I really like that the bread is on point and not slathered in any grease, butter, or oil. It's one of the few sandwich shops that are just completely and totally clean from top to bottom...Really nice to see a spotless fast-casual restaurant because so many others are a dreadful mess. Other reviewers have commented on the slow and somewhat awkward service, but I didn't have an experience that warranted a lower review...Many of the employees are younger and I imagine for some of them, this is their first job, so I'm going to give a bit of leeway and say I think they're making a good effort. Many competing sandwich shops are serving far inferior food and while Submarina isn't the fastest place around, it's worth the wait. In closing, I think too many reviewers are being far too tough on what is a solid, delicious, budget option for a meal. You should give them a shot. read more

The staff are nice, but the food, not so great! I've been there twice in the past couple weeks....wanted to give it one more chance after 1st time last week. Edges of Squaw Bread was hard. Tomatoes were totally "mushy". Lettuce was obviously the pre-bagged Iceberg and was a bit "brown" both times.... Spinach was good/fresh the first time, but not so much the 2nd. Cucumbers a bit soggy. So, literally ALL OF THE PRODUCE was not so fresh!!! The Roast Beef was a bit "sketchy" as well. Color, not the bright brown or a bit pink as fresh Roast Beef should look. It was on the verge of the grey side! The last time I was there, they were out if I've but still selling/handing people cups for drinks w/out telling us that info!?!?! I love me some Submarina! Way better and fresher than subway. Got a large turkey and roast beef with smoked cheddar cheese on a squaw bread roll. Damn it taste so good. My go to sandwich at Submarina. Let me say that I was very full after that sandwich and some awesome Maui onion chips (the best chips). A regular size would have done me just fine but sometimes you have to go big or go home. I always eat at this place. I'll be back. Just added an older pic of an Italian sandwich I got here also. I didn't experience inside of the store because I got it delivered via door Dizzle but my sandwich was seriously bomb. I got an Italian, which seemed to have ham, mortadella, and pepperoni with provolone cheese. Worked up an appetite after some local shopping and came to Submarina as a place we know makes a good sandwich. Been a while since we've been here though so having a toasted onion bread was a new experience, but the ATCs were pretty good. At first I was disappointed in not seeing any sprouts among the few veggie toppings, but the employee turned around to a back counter and sure enough, they had them! While we sat and ate in the store (sandwiches were of good of course), a couple customers later, the employee asked if they wanted their sandwiches with pickles, pepperocinis, olives, sprouts; I was like what??? Where were those? They weren't readily visible (again, they are on the back counter behind the employee prepping the sandwiches), but surely would have loved more veggies if only we had been asked! So taking a star off for that. Maybe if the store had all the veggies in trays on the front counter as they used to, we'd have known they were there and it wouldn't matter about being asked because they'd be right there to see. But as we'd not been there for a while, I assumed they were casualties of the COVID times and no longer being offered. Aw well, next time. read more

Although I enjoy their food, and understand that things are difficult right now, I ordered Dinner via Grubhub through Yelp. After accepting the order and payment, I arrived to pick it up only to find out they were closed. Their neighboring business advised me they were closing at 4 pm. The next day I called for a refund and was advised they had no record of my order. I check my credit card account and found my account had been charged. I called back and was told they had no record of the order and would not refund my 15 dollars. I called Grubhab customer service and got no answer. I had an old 'restaurant owner' phone number for Grubhub and called them. They found they order and refunded my CC within 5 min. All that said Grubhubs agreement with owners is if the restaurant closes prior to their normal time thay are required to call GH and let them know. read more

I have limited time for my lunch hour, so I always call ahead to order & pick up so I can get back to my office ASAP. This location DOES NOT EVER ANSWER THEIR PHONES, So calling ahead is IMPOSSIBLE!! I was craving a sandwich yesterday and have noticed this place before, but never actually have ate here. I decided to give it a try. I got the Sante Fe (which is a turkey sandwich with avocado) on Sour Dough bread. I added pickles, onions, and got their chipotle mayo (amazing) and spicy mustard. The sandwich was full of flavor and really hit the spot!! I haven't had any other sandwich here, but it's Subway style, as you can add/remove vegetables and customize your sandwich as you please. This is what I consider mid-week lunch heaven. I work pretty close to this location, so we order pretty frequently from here and I have never been disappointed. The subs are amazing, but they are by no means a healthy meal. On a diet? Not to worry, Submarina Oceanside West is very accommodating and can turn any sub into a salad. Ugh, mixed feelings on Submarina! Eight times out of ten the sandwiches are 10/10. Nine times out of ten the customer service is 6/10. So hot and cold! Sometimes they make your sandwiches perfectly, yet sometimes they make them to your liking, but prepare them super wonky when wrapping them up to-go. You get home and you've got a mess on your hands! I actually like that the employee environment feels laid back from the customer side of the counter: no uniforms, relaxed dress code, chit chat with one another while making sandwiches, microwave the bacon....It's almost TOO relaxed, but hey, I can't get angry on those times when my favorite, the Cali (avocados, anyone?), turns out great. Their turnover rate must be quick -I feel like they have a new worker every month (yea, I eat here that often; Submarina is better than Subway) YOLO. I hardly ever see other customers in here! If I were to base this review on my most recent visit, the score would not be four stars, but unfortunately much less. Given that I co-own a small business, I know how bad reviews can impact the owner personally, so I chose to give a score based on my cumulative experiences at Submarina instead. First I want to note that the restaurant was not busy at all when I came in. Although my sandwich was not made correctly (included avo, which I did not get) the lack of genuine customer service is what prompts me to give this feedback. When I entered the store I was not greeted, and at no point throughout the transaction was I ever thanked or even smiled at. The girl on the register was also blatantly sighing throughout the process of ringing me up. I thanked them when I left the register and got not a word in return. Your employees were not stoked to be at work, and it was very apparent. The purpose of this review is simply to share my experience so the owner can make the changes needed to get this location up to par.
