I used to visit this shop regularly over a decade ago. I haven't had a Carl's sub in a few years. When I found out that the shop was still there and they were still making the best subs, I had to pay them a visit. Yes, the subs are still delicious and filling! Not filling from the bread and lettuce like you may get from other sandwich shops with a thin layer of meat, but filling from the generous amount of meat that you get. No need to ask for extra meat, that's already been taken care of. I got a #1: salami, peppered ham, capicola, and provolone with everything on it including hot peppers...Umm umm good! I have no complaints! The prices are very reasonably. The menu is simple...all subs. Mr. Carl took my order and he is a very nice man! There is no seating and it's cash only! I found Subs by Carl in my travels and as soon as I walked in I knew I was in the right place. It smelt like the freshest meat bread shop ever! Carl himself usually greets you as you enter with "welcome home, what will you have today". ALL of the subs are worth @least one try. But be warned you will be back. Carl's is all about freshness and quality. He cuts his own meats and cheeses fresh daily and the bread and veggies are also delivered daily. Yje subs are HUGE and can easily be split 2 or 3 ways and on a personal note, Carl's is one the only places on that side of town that carries RED PLUM NANTUCKET NECTARS. The ONLY reason this place isn't getting 5 stars is because they only accept cash and they only operate 9am-4:50pm Monday - Saturday. The subs at Carl's are fresh and filling. There's a good variety of subs to choose from (my favorite is the #1 WITH HOTS), so no matter what you're craving, there's sure to be a sub to meet your needs. The prices are incredibly reasonable -- most subs are only about $6.35, which is almost unheard of, considering what you're getting. It's about an 10 inch sub filled with fresh meats, cheeses, fixings and some love somewhere in there. What I like most is that it's a place that you can tell focuses on the product more than anything else. There's no website to peruse before you come down here, and there's no twitter, facebook or other online presence. You'll probably only hear about it through word of mouth, but whatever you hear will let you know you need to get down to Carl's FAST! I admit it's a hole in the wall. I had to look it up on Google stree view to see exactly where it was located, but once I did that, I found it without a problem. Inside it's not bright and shiny like some newer sandwich shops, but it's not a place that's violating health codes, either. But really, who cares? You're here for the food! The staff are always friendly, but not overbearing. When you walk in, you're acknowledged and engaged in a carefree way. These are the best subs in DC hands down and being a Cash Only spot will NEVER stop me from referring people or going to grab a sub. I recently visited this shop because I've heard so much about it and all the top notch reviews, but maybe I was expecting too much, but the sub tasted no different than any other sub I've tried. My friend ordered the #20 and I ordered the #8 sub and honestly we were waiting for our taste buds to experience something spectacular. The sub was good, but nothing I couldn't make at home. Will I visit again, possibly, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. Again...maybe I was expecting too much, but I am glad to see the shop has been in business for 30 years as the owner mentioned during my business...and that in itself is a major accomplishment. I'm not a big cold cuts fan. I eat them every now and then but not a big fan. Parking: DC street parking only. Hit or miss, not much you can really say here other than thank God its outside of the downtown area. Decor: Its a hole in the wall, with drink cases and chip racks in the front. Only a counter separates you from the workers cutting up the meat and lettuce as well as the people making the sandwiches. Nothing fancy here. This is my kind of place. Service: This place takes your order right away. As soon as you hit the door they are ready for you. It may take a while for you to get it because apparently this place is famous among DC locals and I have never been here when there isn't a line of people waiting. TIP: Do yourself a favor, call in your order before arriving. Food: The cold cuts are literally the best I have ever remember eating. For about $7 you get a fat sandwich with a fresh roll that is incredibly good. Lots of choices all worth looking over. Make sure you order it "all the way" for the best tasting experience. We usually buy about 15 sandwiches at a time, because once my coworkers hear that I am going they usually start throwing money my way.
