Love this shop. Had a problem with a fob not working and brought it to a local locksmith who tried reprogramming our OEM and several other fobs declaring a bad onboard computer. Brought it to Suba Guru and they had a used fob they programmed for us with a total charge of $50. So honest and good! read more

They didn't want my business. I scheduled a repair with them, brought my car in and expected it to be done in a couple hours. A couple hours later I get a text with a link to an inspection report. They cited a number of repairs the car "needed" including the work I brought the car in for. I declined all the work. They jacked up the price of the requested repair a couple times. None of the other work they said I needed was legitimate. They charged me $165 for an inspection I never requested. The ?owner? waived the fee because I never signed off on it when I dropped the car off. Said it was standard practice. So instead of picking up a repaired vehicle and paying them the very substantial fee I agreed to, I took back my still broken car and they lost my business and all future business. The car developed an exhaust leak shortly after. The header bolts had been loosened on one side. I did the requested repair myself for $150 in a couple hours and tightened up the header bolts. I can't tell you if they know how to work on cars, only that they didn't want to do the requested repair on mine. read more

I have a 2016 Subaru Outback and ever since I've owned it ( I am the second owner) it has made a strange sound that sounds very much like the word TOOK. But it can be very loud. It happens randomly in different places but will always happen in the same place so I was able to record the sound. I took it to the Subaru dealer and two different mechanics and no one could figure out what the problem was. So I gave up. By accident I ran into Suba Guru services, told them my problem and Brandy came out and fixed the problem in less than a minute! I have listened to this hideous sound for four years. The staff is incredibly misogynistic, diagnosed my car incorrectly without even touching it. Took my Subaru Legacy in for new thermostat and was told that by the smell and looks of the car and I quote "I get paid the big buck's to tell people this" that my car needed new heads and it would be 3K. I respectfully conversed through the mansplaining I was being given and ultimately picked my car back up. I did give them the opportunity to do the thermostat but was given the ultimatum of 3K or go elsewhere. So I went elsewhere. It's been over a thousand miles on my new thermostat and my Legacy is purring like a kitten. I have an OG posting that was obviously too truthful and honest so it got taken down. So I had my 2019 Subaru cross trek oil change performed. As part of that service they do an inspection they told me that my front disc brakes were down to 25%. They didn't give me the millimeter measurement which is standard. I decided to take it back to the subaru dealer for the following oil change and they indicated that there was eight mm left on the pads, which is more than 75%. This is concerning for me, and if the auto technician cannot be honest and he's just trying to drive business then he lost mine. read more

We brought our car in because we thought we had a coolant leak. Everyone we interacted with was so helpful and kind. After testing there was no leak, they graciously topped off the coolant at no charge! This is my go-to place to keep my prezzie healthy. If only they worked on 4 runners as well :) read more

Subaguru will under-mind you as a person and do the bait and switch with used parts. They claimed to put a cam seal in my car, 2 weeks later it was spewing oil out. Took it to another mechanic and he fixed the issue. There is a set screw that guru didn't tighten which allowed oil to pour out of the motor. When my new mechanic pulled the seal out that guru had put in, it was obvious that it was a used $5 seal which was from another car. For god sakes why put a used seal in, especially one that is so cheap?? I had a friend the same day tell me about his experience with them. They replaced his alternate with a used one. Again they didn't tell him that. 2 days later, 400 miles from home it failed. I can barely put a paragraph together because of how pissed I am. F THIS COMPANY!! SERIOUSLY. read more

Bought a used car from Subaguru, being sold on consignment for one of their employees. Long story short, within less than 100 miles a CEL for major repair on the exhaust air injection system ($1-2k fix) & I find the car had bad rod bearings covered up as "piston slap" ($4k-8k fix). I thought a long time about not posting this review because technically one of Subagurus employees sold the car to me, but in the end it was sold through Subaguru using Subaguru's reputation to make the sale, so ultimately it is their responsibility. To this date neither the employee or Subaguru have assisted in any way, they have lost my business for life and the business of anyone that I can steer away from their company. read more

This review is for the owners, the Short's who have mistakenly placed their trust in the guy that as he states "makes the big bucks" to screw over people like me, Marshal. I should have read the reviews first about how this place treats women and the younger generation. It would have saved me 3 weeks. I brought my Subaru to the shop knowing the issue already. I have owned several cars, worked on several of them and have had amazing relationships with my previous shop owners, volunteering at their drive events, their car runs etc. I spoke to the gal at the front counter and it was agreed that they still had to do a diagnostic but the fee would be refunded towards the work if we moved forward. Fair. I drop off my car again letting them know that the thermostat was stuck and in need of replacement. When the thermostat got stuck the pressure popped one of the hoses off from my radiator and had made a smelly mess but that was not a concern. Then comes the call from the Big Man himself where he elaborates how he makes the big bucks to tell people like me that I am wrong and that my car needs new heads based off what he can see without taking anything off the car and smell. I very respectfully respond that the smell and looks he is seeing is the mess that I made with the radiator and that since the thermostat would need to be replaced anyways can we just start there. Warren's response NO, its a 3k repair or nothing. Again, knowing my car and now understanding that this shop has no intentions of working with their customer and post being tossed into an Mansplaining argument I pick my car back up. I let the gal at the front desk know I will wait at least 1000 miles after the repair from a shop I got in your 1 star reviews before posting this review. I did not however state that I will be telling everyone about my experience, and we all know the math between how people share experiences, we share our bad experiences much more often to help people steer clear of the same mistakes. Which is what I am doing now. I have had my thermostat replaced, I have a new great shop with someone that cares and listens to their customers and it IS NOT HERE! We have made trips to Portland and have more than a 1000 miles on the new thermostat. Needless to say just like I tried to calmly converse with Marshal about, no one is right all of the time, even Marshal can be wrong. And he was not only wrong but RUDE, AND A TOTAL SEXIST!!!! This shop is a good ol boys club only. If you are a female and forbid you actually know you car DON'T GO HERE. Your car won't get fixed and your feminism will be degraded. Our car was broken into while in the parking lot at the SubaGuru in Bend waiting to get looked at. Even though they provided an old window out of another car they charged us for the installation and cleanup of glass stating that the incident was not their fault. When I arrived two days later to pick up the car the window seal was not in properly, there was still broken glass everywhere and they left the keys on the dashboard of the car sitting in their parking lot. Not only was my car broken into but hey, let's leave the keys out in the open and post a sign that says come steal me! Although we understand that the initial break in was not their fault we absolutely feel as if they handled this completely wrong. Had this happened at my business the costs would have been taken care of. Saying to me "well, it wasn't our fault" is childish, terrible customer service and simply not the way to handle a situation like this. We were visiting from CA, and our 2004 Subaru had damage from a previous accident and other damaged parts that no shop in San Diego seemed to be able to get or were willing to repair. Stopped by Suba Guru and met Marshall, the manager, as well as a few others there who were welcoming and extremely willing to help. Their great dane was magnificent and friendly to my kids. They provided everything we needed to make our subaru right again and more, for a fantastic price. Even gave my son a special keep-sake which has so nice. I can not overstate how happy we were to have found and done business with Suba Guru. Bend is lucky to have them! Thanks again, Marshall and crew! We will definitely be back next year! read more

Grew up in Bend and always heard that this place was awesome, so now that I own a subaru I decided to stop by for an oil change. Perhaps my expectations were high because of their reputation, but unfortunately I was NOT impressed. I am used to always getting a full services list at every other place I've been to informing you of all the services they performed. Here, all I got was a receipt telling me how much it cost. Every other place I've gone to has also rotated my tires for free included with the oil change. Since I had no idea what services they had performed, when I thought about the tires I had to call them and ask if they had rotated them. Turns out they charge an extra $25. I wished they would have at least offered, I would have been willing to pay extra to have the tires rotated there. Although I'm pretty sure I could just go across the street to Les Schwab and they will do it for free? Don't quote me on that. They called and told me a belt needed replaced so I had them do that. Now I'm wondering if there is anything else that I ought to consider replacing that they didn't mention. I suppose it's a plus that they don't try to offer you a bunch of extra stuff. I told them I have been using full synthetic oil. They strongly recommended using a partial synthetic instead. I was confused but I said OK since I trusted their reputation. They told me they always recommend 3,000 miles for oil change no matter what. I don't know much about oil, but I think a lot of mechanics would disagree and say that if you use full synthetic you're good for at least 5,000 miles - even the dealership will tell you that. So it kinda just sounds like they want people to come in more regularly to me. All of this information came to me from the secretary who had to keep going and asking the mechanics about everything and relaying the information back to me. She was fine as a secretary, but personally I really appreciate when all of the employees are knowledgeable about their business. Even if you're just the secretary it helps to try and learn a few things about cars. I'm sure this place is great for certain long term customers and people who know about cars and know exactly what services they want. I don't think they will try to rip you off which is definitely an important quality for this type of business. Personally I would prefer someplace more informative and professional, so I'll probably just head back to the dealership. read more

Boy, do I wish there was a Suba Guru in the SF Bay Area. We were on vacation in Sunriver. During the drive up from CA, the check engine light came on and the cruise control light started flashing. The car was still drivable, and long story short - I had not tightened the gas cap ALL the way at our last fill up. When we finally got to the resort, we looked up Subaru dealers in the Bend area, and this was the only option. We made our way there - but Google Maps was wrong about the location. (I submitted a problem report so hopefully it's fixed now...) We called them and the woman was super polite and told us how to find them. They confirmed it was the gas cap, reset the code, and sent us on our way with a smile. In the 4 minutes we were there, I noticed they have their prices right there on a whiteboard - you have to love a mechanic who tells you up front what the charges will be. Loved the people, appreciate the service, looks like a real honest place. read more

350 miles to go to get home on a tight schedule. My Saab-uru was having engine thermostat problems. I arrived when they opened, explained my situation and they put up on the rack immediately. They diagnosed, quoted me a fair price that included their diagnosis time, gave me good advice and put it on the rack right away. The mechanic was knowledgeable and very confident in his diagnosis. I originally wasn't going to come here because some of the negative reviews on this site, but asked for a recommendation at the local gas station. He pointed me here without hesitation, saying he hears nothing but positives from the locals. I'm glad I ignored the negatives and asked. Asked for a quote to replace a fuel pump on a 1997 Subaru. They said it would be around $750.00. The fuel pump costs around $100. Makes me wonder what they're charging for labor these days. They ripped me off once before and I see nothing has changed. Won't consider these crooks to repair anything ever again. read more

I went in to see if I could get my car diagnosed and the mechanic who very begrudgingly came out to talk to me, did not help me whatsoever. I asked if he could read a code on my car and he rudely said I needed to make an appointment in order for him to even look at anything. Last time my wife was in to have her car serviced, which was purchased used from them, they informed her they recommend they do the oil changes from now on to keep it up on the terms of the warranty instead of having me do it... you know cause oil changes are so hard. So she had them do it this time. We are heading out of town tomorrow, driving to our destination, and we need the oil changed pronto... I tried to do it this morning but found the drain bolt tightened so tight I was moving the car back and forth as I cranked the wrench. None of my tools worked on it and I could feel the bolt start to strip so I brought it to a lube shop. I felt the bolt give from the driver's seat when the grease monkey got it undone. Just like one of those nouveau riche night clubs where they screen people at the door. You will be turned away if you are not driving a newer Subaru; are not a white male; and are not dressed in the latest from Patagonia. I think of myself as a pretty fair mechanic, having done all of the work on my own classic car since 1984. And, I would rank my husband several notches above me in mechanical ability. So, imagine my surprise when I was informed by the service manager, that my husband is unable to read a dipstick. Wow. And that I, a mere female, am too stupid to read the temperature gauge. Double wow. I had just made the trip to Subaguru, (100 miles at 60 mph, with the AC cranked up and the temperature gauge level at perfect operating temperature the whole way). I will spare you the gory details of what I went through to get the day off from work in order to have my car serviced. The mechanic, who I think should be fired for extreme lack of due diligence, saw a film of oil on the bottom of my engine and jumped to the conclusion that the head gasket was blown. This despite my insistence that the car was running great, was not overheating, and was not using oil. But, the service manager would not believe me. After all, how could a woman know what she was talking about? The-so-called mechanic, did not even read the dipstick or look at the coolant. Otherwise, he would have seen that the car was not using oil, and that there was no oil in the coolant. Not sure what could have possibly motivated me to lie about the operating condition of my own car when I was there to get it repaired... but anyway.... They would not believe me. In one of the weakest versions of a shell game ever staged, they put the car up on the lift and said, "Look at all that oil. You can see it's leaking out of the head gaskets." To which I responded, "I see oil" because, with a film of oil covering the bottom of the engine, it was impossible to tell precisely where the leak was coming from. That is just common sense. After a lengthy and rather animated discussion with my husband the next day, I learned that the original, leaky factory-issue defective head gasket had been replaced in 2009 with the "updated" gasket. My husband was aware of the other oil leak, which is actually rather minor at the oil separator plate. I had made an appointment for a diagnostic, a tune up, and tire rotation, and was perfectly willing and able to pay for additional repairs. Like the separator plate leak, for example. But was refused service and turned away at the door because, as the service manager put it, the car was not worth his time. I am well aware that my car is nearing the end of its useful life. That was why I wanted the diagnostic. I previously had my eye on a newer Outback on their sales lot, but I would hesitate to invest in any vehicle that had been repaired on the basis of external appearances alone. My next Subaru will be purchased from someone else, and our repair needs will also be taken elsewhere. A bit of advice to the service manager: Cars, just like people, cannot be judged on superficial appearance alone. You could have made some money on repairs to keep my car healthy for a couple more years. You could have had a good customer. You could have sold me my next Subaru. Women also have money. Women also have mechanical knowledge. And they may even know a thing or two about their own cars. Your snap judgement does not serve you well. read more

I took my Forester in recently because I had heard a horrific metallic grinding noise when in drive. Of course, the noise disappeared when I took it in - ain't that the way! Well, the folks at Suba Guru seemed determined to figure it out so I left it overnight. Spoke to Dane the next day & still nada. He went over all the different scenarios he duplicated when I had heard the noise but the noise still refused to make an appearance. He also let me know he checked the wheel bearings & transmission, which were the two areas I assumed may be the culprit. He then told me it was likely a rock caught in the rotor, which after he said that makes sense as I was driving down Reed Market the day before. And given that the noise is now gone gone, I'm good with that. To top it off, they did all of that at no cost. Will definitely be going back. read more

I cannot express how happy I am to find some real professionals in the auto industry. I was referred to Suba Guru by several people and boy I'm happy I was. They took the time to fully diagnose the issues and then came out and fully explained them to me. They were not interested in just throwing parts and money at my car. He started with a methodical approach and was right straight out of the gate. I swear these guys speak Subaru...They were not only able to fix my immediate issue, but while it was there they noticed that I was having leaks from the cam seals..They fully explained to me that Subaru's require the right quality parts. They even showed me the sub-quality axle that had been installed and how and where it was failing. This is so nice to have such thorough and experienced technicians...They have earned a lifelong customer who would recommend them to anyone. read more

Pretty disappointed with a pre purchase inspection for my sons car. I've maintained his car with mobile 1, check all fluids, inspect for leaks, etc etc. They perform a pre purchase inspection and compile a long list of needs for the car that they will gladly take care of for thousands of dollars. My son brings me his car and I go through their list and lo and behold, find out that it's full of bogus needs that they will gladly "fix". "Dirty radiator fluid"? I guess they didn't notice the brand new radiator that was recently installed. I can't believe they operate this way in such a small town. Maybe they were friends with the buyer and trying to drive the price down. Either way, not cool. Karma always wins. read more

I was at this shop last week with a friend. While I was there I witnessed the management trying to pick a fight with construction workers that were working on the road in front of the shop, luckily for the Suba duche the construction workers were professional and ignored the idiot. They use seals from old cars, to save money and mark them up 500% OVER NEW ONES! (no joke!). If you decide to use Guru, make sure to ask to see the old parts they replace and the new parts being put in before paying them. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use a permanent marker to sign your Initials on the parts to avoid bate and switch. I will never ever recommended the guru to anyone ever again, even though I used to in the past! read more

They take the time to explain everything in detail and go over my questions (no matter how many I have - and even when they are the same questions) until I am satisfied I understand what needs to be done. I moved from the Bay Area almost two years ago. I had an amazing Subaru place in Santa Cruz that we were sad to leave. I am so happy that we found Subaru Guru. First I took my car to the dealership to do free inspection. They said I needed to replace my arm bushings. I decided to take it to Subaru Guru for a second opinion. They said that they did not need to be replaced and would keep an eye on them. That was over a year ago and they are still good. We have two Subarus and they always take great care of us. Never charge us to read the check engine light and give lots of great deals for oil changes. We are so happy to have found another great Subaru place! I recommend to all subaru owners. read more

The check engine light came on in my Subaru Forester. I called Suba Guru because it was the closest to my house. When I arrived they were going to close for the weekend in less than an hour. Marshall walked out to my car and read the code. He did not try to sell me a new part, in fact he said it could probably wait. I explained my fear of driving down the mountain to the dealer at a later date and that I would really like to have it fixed now. Even though they were very busy and trying to finish up their work on the cars in que, Marshall talked to one of the mechanics who said he could do the work immediately. I went to Subaguru to help fix an ongoing issue with my Subaru. I had never used them before and had no idea what they would be like. Dane was the guy I dealt with during the 2 weeks my vehicle was there. Their technicians found lots of issues that weren't fixed properly by other mechanics, so I was very upset to hear that. However, I am thankful these guys seem to know what they are doing. Dane was very nice and he was understanding with everything that was happening. I am grateful I had someone that was so helpful. It's a shame vehicles ever have issues that need resolved in the first place but, it's good there are people like Dane that can help so they can be taken care of. Thank you! read more

My Subaru needed a head gasket replacement on my 2006 Impreza after only about 72000 miles. I studied costs and got quotes from at least 5 shops-- all others were over $2200. Subaguru beat the price by far, and was very clear about what work they would do for the big job. I also had them change my auxilary drive belts and radiator hoses. I brought the car into the shop on a Monday and was promised to have it by the end of the day on the following Monday. (I drove a significant distance from my home to go to this shop for this job.) I was very happy when they called on Friday morning at about 11 AM to let me know that they finished early The job was seamless and smooth- no hiccups at all. Scott was the mechanic for this job, but Dane was the guy that I talked to. I would describe these guys " modern day grease monkeys" and that's exactly who I want working on my car. The shop is in an odd location-- it's off in a low-rent area south of the Walmart and Albertsons-- having this location surely helps keep their overhead low. The lobby area is not very plush, but it I don't like to pay inflated prices at my mechanic for designer furniture in the waiting area. If I have other major maintenance issues, I will consider them immediately. read more

For all the locals, A simple cam shaft job was quoted to me yesterday at nearly $800, the female front office clerk incited my car had more problems than it did. It does not. I'm doing normal maintenance for my engine which has 147K on it. It's time to change seals not quote me a horror movie. Everyone else in town listened to my request and I have been quoted 300 for the entire job and all seals replaced. Further more earlier in the year I had brought my STi in for a quote on a timing belt replacement job, subaguru quoted me 1200, I had the dealership in bend, on hwy 20 replace it for 349.00 with a $50 discount coupon via a Fuji heavy industries discount.
