PREDATORY BUSINESS PRACTICES A client of ALEX LAWLIS for over 25 years. I have put up with her horrible, entitled and brutish attitude for years as she is admittedly skilled with short hair. Never have I had a no show but I have been late a few times. Any time this occurred she will not stop short of verbally chastising and will potentially threaten to drop you as a client. Just a heads up. However, what she did today is actually unconscionable. She not only lost a client; she lost her oldest and most loyal one. Apparently for a quick few hundred bucks. As mentioned, I have never missed an appointment, but today, I apparently had one and it skipped my mind in entirety. Oh, and there's a reason. I've had a significant loss, with services tomorrow, so with all the stress, etc., I legitimately forgot my appointment. She doesn't call but instead I receive a text saying, "I'm leaving in 5 minutes," about 8 minutes into my scheduled appointment time. I didn't see it for another 15 or so, profusely apologized, and what does she do? She informs me she will have the salon owner ROBERT charge me for all of my services. I was in shock -- still am. The salon fully charged me. Absolute heartless and predatory business practices. And what does it say about Alex when she treats her longest client this way? Disgusting. Stay far away. No one should patron a salon that treats people this way. read more

This is an update to my last review. I used to see Erica but she unfortunately had to move on so I see Ali now and I have never had less than a 10/10 experience. I admit that I am one of those people that has a hard time getting to the salon on a regular basis. But every time I do, I am so happy when I get home. I feel better, my clothes look better on me (), and I overall just feel so good about myself! And even though I love the way my hair looks when I get home it somehow looks even better after five or six washes. Highly recommend. I really, truly hate moving. So when I settled down after the upheaval of moving to Seattle I finally had to deal with the cruel butchery I had done to my hair just before I moved to the Left Coast, & randomly picked Stylus, probably cos the name sounded cool (Style-us? Love puns!). I'd surpassed myself this time- after giving myself a couple impromptu 'haircuts' I knew well to leave my hair- a female's crowning possession- to the professionals, but this time I lost my whole damned mind and tried to bleach my own dark brown, recalcitrant hair. It was like something out of a clichéd movie- girl dramatically changes hair after moving on from long-term-relationship, probs a metaphor for asserting the 'self' after years as part of a couple, Freud knows... Unfortunately, I do not do things by halves- I go alll in, baby. I wanted to go Daenarys Targaeryn blonde, & I wanted it right ne-ow.. So, knowing from past experimentation that my hair doesn't pick up colour well, I geniusly decided to leave the bleach/hydrogen peroxide in for 12 hours, overnight. Bleaching is never something one should do at home, and what I did could have caused serious burns to my scalp. Luckily I guess my hair is ridiculously thick so "all" that happened was that I ended up with Kentucky-fried hair- it was gruesome, I will not be posting a before pic. Luckily I got right in to see Ali, and I've been a repeat customer ever since! I went to Erica in the hopes to go blonder over time/multiple visits and to have a nice color for my sisters wedding at the end of July. I went in for a consultation to explain all my hair dying history so she's aware. I went in for my first color appointment and she ended up frying my hair with bleach so bad that She had to cut it to a bob (when we weren't even planning on cutting it that day). My hair was to my mid back... She also went to ask senior stylists for advice and none of them even came to look at my hair. They just told her to cut it off. When I left the salon that day, I had an uneven short cut and color that did not blend with my roots and was just a line across my head. I was embarrassed to be in public with it. Since she wasn't charging me, I decided to give her one more chance to try and fix it. When I went in, I advised her to maybe use a 5/6 gloss to make my hair match my roots (advice from my stylist sister). With what she used, it did not match my roots and I left again with uneven hair color and an uneven cut 2 weeks before my sisters wedding. I now have to go somewhere else and pay extra to have the color fixed to match my roots. I went in for same length blonder hair and ended up with a bob and hair i need to go fix for a 3rd time. Learn from my mistakes and do your research extensively and also a test strand before having a stylist color your hair. read more

Robert is the best. I have short hair, and he is the only stylist I have ever seen who cut it perfectly the first time. He always nails it, no matter what I ask for--and I always want something different. He's given me a pixie, an edgy pixie, a wavy French bob, and a few other cuts I love, too. He also gives me quick tips on how to best style the cut, which I love. It makes it easy to recreate how he styles my hair at the salon. I haven't come in in the last year because of COVID, but I came in today after reading about the salon's protocols online. They are being extremely cautious and safe, following all the necessary steps to keep everyone healthy, and I felt incredibly comfortable--and I'm the kind of person who feels nervous about the grocery store every two weeks! You'll feel safe here. No one was anywhere near me except Robert, everything was super clean and sanitized before and after use, and even the checkout process was touch free. It's great. I am so, so, so, so thankful that places like Stylus exist! I had only experienced a handful of pedicures before I went to Stylus, and while I enjoyed the $20-25 price point, I didn't enjoy not being able to communicate well with the employee, and once I was sad that they didn't scrape any dead skin off my feet during the service. When I tried Stylus, I learned that a pedicure could be an even better experience than I had previously imagined. There was no massage chair, but the couch was incredibly comfortable, and I was pleasantly surprised by the use of a metal bowl filled with stones and salts instead of the funny tubs with occasionally blue colored water that many nail salons use. The scrubs looked much nicer and much less... generic... and the paraffin wax came in individual (disposable, I believe) baggies that are heated in a slightly futuristic looking machine instead of a mini-tub that you get to share with who knows how many people. Plus, it was wonderful being able to talk to the technician, and it was so nice to have the room to ourselves. No technician chatting with their co-worker in a foreign-to-me language while she works! In the end, I was left with some well-scrubbed soft feet, and some very shiny pretty nails. The cost is definitely more than the cost at many nail salons, and there is a good reason for that. The experience is very, very different. I don't know how frequently I'll treat myself to the pedicures at Stylus, but I definitely recommend it and I hope to be back soon for more pedicures and other wonderful services. read more

I got a sampling of mini services from some gals here and I was SO IMPRESSED. Yeah, the salon is gorgeous and the beautiful people might intimidate a little, but they really are so friendly and good at what they do. I'm VERY devoted to the salon I go to that a friend of mine owns, but honestly, after getting a few quick services from these gals, I might have to cheat on my regular salon once in a while. I got a hair consult by Andrea and I absolutely adored her. Easy to talk to and she gave me some great tips for my Jew-fro. Then, in less than 60 seconds she trimmed up my bangs/face framing part of my hair to perfection. Exactly what I needed. Then I visited with the make up gal (and I feel so bad because I forgot her name but she was RAD) and she is like a fragrance dictionary. She had me fill out some information and based on that, helped recommend some different perfumes that I would like. It was kind of like a psychic reading. Kind of a cool salon service! I cannot say enough good things about this place. I rave about it to all my friends so I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet on yelp! I've been coming here for years and have always had nothing but wonderful experiences here. I think I started coming here in 2008 or 2009 and it's 2014 and I still can't imagine going anywhere else. Everyone there is so fun and nice - a trip to Stylus feels like catching up with friends bc everyone is so sweet. I've been seeing Anna for years and I love that she has such a great eye for what will flatter and work with my skin, fave shape, hair, and lifestyle. She's the only one I trust to chop off my long hair when i wanted to go short. When I went blonde (I'm a natural brunette), I knew I was in good hands. (I've included pictures of some of the cut/color sessions with Anna in the pics). It's rare to find someone with a good eye for what will work and the skill to execute it, not to mention someone who is as friendly and easy to talk to. I've also gone to Kelly for quite some time while I was getting eyelash extensions done regularly. Kelly is so sweet and very detailed with lash extensions. I've been going to Stylus for more than 5 years, and I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Jacqui is AMAZING. She is able to work with my cowlicks and crazy hair so that it is easy to style and I don't have to put too much effort into it. When I come to her with something specific in mind, she nails it every time, and when I want a change but don't know what I want, she's always got the right suggestion. She's PHENOMENAL at cutting short female hairstyles (I currently have a pompadour), and she nails the color EVERY time. Also, I love the rotating art exhibits in the salon. I've been to at least 3 different hair dressers here and no one seems to be able to do the precision layering and exact shape I'm after. Absolutely love this place!! I have been twice now, both times for pretty dramatic cuts (7+ inches) and have seen Courtney both times. Not only has she consistently given me incredible cuts that ACTUALLY give volume to my very fine, very straight, and very oily hair (a task I thought was impossible until my first visit with her), but she is also super friendly and genuine- we never ran out of things to talk about! As far as the salon as a whole goes, the atmosphere is clean, trendy, and very modern/bright, and all the staff members I spoke to were very friendly and professional. It is also clear that this establishment is super mindful of the carbon footprint that the beauty industry has on the environment, and is actively working to market sustainable and equitable brands at their store. My last cut was almost three weeks ago now, and I am still getting compliments from my friends, family, and coworkers on how great it looks- truly cannot recommend this place enough! read more

Went to get a simple short haircut from Robert. $100 with tips he didn't deserve, and I need to redo it right away because the quality is so low. Robert has no idea what "same length all around" means, he asked me what "45 degrees angle" is (guess math wasn't his fave in school) , and he doesn't know what word "symmetric" means. Now my hair on the right side is longer than on the left side, and little strands are sticking out here and there, while it was supposed to be smooth and even all around. His hands where shaking. He also kept me, with wet hair, near the open door for an hour, and now I'm catching cold. Horrible experience. Never again. My husband, who is a scientist, hot a hairdresser, does better. read more

Whether it's sugaring, waxing, massages, manis, pedis, makeup, haircuts, updos, color or even a consultation for finding a perfume or signature scent! And what's best is they have a salon HAPPY HOUR where many services are offered at a steep discount. This is great for group events, parties, heck...even a date! Get your man a manicure :) I popped in for a hair consultation and quickly made an appointment with Chantelle. Nicole, who helps run the shop and book everyone's appointments was quick to help direct me in the right direction. In fact, she told me that after years of working here and years of working with many of the same people, she's quite the expert at making great stylist suggestions. I plopped myself into a chair with Chantelle and boy was she right! She did a quick hairstyle with me to show off her talents on my curly hair and talked about different flattering styles that will work when I wear it straight or natural. I feel so confident about her abilities and can't wait to get my haircut! Did I mention this place is also an art gallery? A couple years ago I was treated egregiously here by a cruel stylist named Jacqui who had an Auburn bob... I came in for a consult and thought things went well... I later emailed her for a price quote and was rudely emailed back telling me to go somewhere else. Very bizarre. I felt discriminated against for being a young trans youth. I told the owner and he gave me some really bad outdated & frosty highlights to try to smooth things over. But he allowed the unprofessional Jacqui to stay on staff. Wowza! I recently had the pleasure of visiting Stylus for some treatments (4, to be exact), and they did not disappoint! The Facial (Colleen)~ Amazing. You know, there's seems to always be a moment or two during a facial where you are just...uncomfortable. Like, "oh my god the steam is going to burn my face off," or, "the light is ten seconds away from frying my eyeballs," or "i can't breathe because my holes that i use to breathe are almost totally covered by goop." There was not one single awkward or uncomfortable moment here! It was sooooo relaxing and wonderful. The hand and foot massage portion was great...unlike my last treatment at a different salon which felt like moths were dancing on me.... ...."ummm, what is happening here? is someone massaging me? is she tickling me with a feather?" i never did find out. Anyway, the facial was fabulous. The Wax (Colleen) ~ I shall spare you the details, but rest assured it was well done and as pain-free as they come. The Pedicure (Kimberly) ~ This came after my facial. I was all loosey goosey relaxed, and she propped me up on a sofa, put a blanket on me and gave me a heated neck wrap. Um, amazing. I was reminded of the beauty salon scenes in Steel Magnolias where everybody is just hanging out and having a big ol' love fest and it feels like everyone is best friends. I had just met these women that day and I felt like I could have talked to them for hours. Maybe I was drunk from the toxins that were leaving my body. I could live on that couch and be happy forever. The pedicure itself was comfortable and super well-done....I'm looking at my toes now and they literally look the same as they did when I left the salon three weeks ago (which now that i think of it is a little unsettling and strange -- did my toenails stop growing?) The Conditioning Treatment (Jacqui) ~ Super relaxing, a powerful and lengthy head massage combined with good-for-your-hair stuff. She styled my hair afterward and even touched up my crazy bangs. Basically, the staff here is amazing...I am not sure how to describe it...casual coolness without being too cool for school? elegant without being fussy? friendly without being pushy? I decided (on a whim) to start getting eyelash extensions a few months ago. I did some internet research and then checked Yelp to read reviews on salons. I came across Stylus and specifically Kelly, who had a great lash review by another user. I made an appointment to see her and about four fills later, I'm officially addicted. She's quick, friendly, and makes my lashes look AMAZING. The first set were a bit long for my taste so I asked for shorter ones during the second fill and viola, perfect for me! She rocks! I've only been treated once here, but it was a stellar experience. I got a good brow design from May. The customer service is top of the line...the staff makes you feel like you're a friend (I know that sounds corny, but it's true)! Two friends of mine went in at the same time for pedis from Kimberely, while I perched on a chair and chatted with them! I'm thinking I should go back sometime soon for one of those from Kim. Spa Happy Hour! OH YES!! This is a beauty junkie's frosting to the cupcake! This is the only higher-end place I've ever come across in Seattle that offers such treats! I loved the clean white brightness of the salon - its even bigger downstairs for the spa area (which I plan to try). I neglected my eyebrows out of laziness and finally had to have them done asap! I was a random walk-in but they took care of me right away as I was lead downstairs by a super sweet esthetian! About a week after my wife and I decided to get divorced, I realized my hair hadn't been dyed in 4 years; and divorce meant I was allowed to do this! I wanted to get it done before heading out on what amounted to 6 weeks of business trips, and had a tight timeline. The first 4 places that were recommended to me had no availability, but finally I got referred to Stylus. Stylus assigned me to Anna since she seems to be their best colorist. When I got there, the dye was magnificent. Anna is a very engaging and knowledgeable stylist and had sane explanations for why my red usually fades; as well as great tips to maintain it. Before I get to the dye, let me tell you the best part. Anna's scalp massage is magnificent. I'm fairly certain at one point I moaned out not to tell my ex-wife how much I was enjoying this. Maybe it was a pleasure-induced hallucination, I don't know, or care. Fantastic. One of the most stressful weeks of my life literally melted away in Anna's strong hands. Onto the meat. The color was great. I had no idea what I wanted besides red, and Anna worked with me to find a red I was happy with. Then she suggested a brown to blend it with that would match my skintone, and her choice was dead-on. I walked out of there feeling like a new man who had just erased the previous 5 years of his life with glee! There was a slight misunderstanding about the cost of my dye, and Stylus' staff was very professional in rectifying it. I've jumped around from stylist to barber shop to whatever in what seems like an endless search for a good stylist. I'll find one I like and they move, or they're not always available, or whatever. Lately I've discovered Jackie (sp?) at Stylus. She's just as obsessive about perfection as I am, which is perfect since I have the world's straightest hair. One hair too long or short and it sticks out. The whole experience is great but I've learned I need to carve out a full hour for the shampoo, head rub (ahhh), cut and style, rinse, and touch-up. I have been seeing Ali Schneider for almost two years and she has saved my hair! I love fun bright colors and she always takes my ideas and makes them even better than I could have imagined. She knows how I feel about my hair losing any length and has made sure to only trim split ends rather than taking any length off. I first came into Stylus for a two-week fill after two failed attempts of finding the right esthetician. The first, refused to give me feedback on my lashes and left me feeling clueless about lash extensions, short $100 and lashes that looked like what I started with. The second time around with a different esthetician added lashes that were too thick and heavy for my natural lashes causing my natural lashes to break and become weaker than they already were. Finding Anissa has been an ABSOLUTE BLESSING. She is super sweet and an amazing lash artist. She gave me amazing recommendations and put the condition of my lashes first. With her help, my natural eyelashes have been getting stronger, allowing her to add more lashes for a more voluminous look! I am so so happy with the results and so lucky to have found Anissa-- I have been recommending her to my friends thinking of lashes non-stop. What a great salon! Right in Belltown by Wasabi Sushi with lots of street parking! Went on a Saturday afternoon and had no trouble finding the location or parking - Score! The first floor is a salon and the downstairs is a spa. The bathroom is super cute - square toilet, clear sink, hand towels rolled up and placed in a fixture on the wall (may not make much sense but check it out and you'll see what I mean). My husband got me a groupon deal to the spa and when I went to look at the online spa menu I was overwhelmed by the prices. I was used to getting spa services, but at 3/4 of the cost. Having gotten a pedi and facial there, I understand why the prices are a bit higher. The estheticians are talented, thorough and nice people. The facial was awesome and the best part was the massage! The pedicure was unlike any other, on a communal couch with my own customized bowl of foot soak with fresh rosemary branches! I left feeling pampered and face and feet feeling fab; can't wait to go back and splurge (since I won't have another groupon to use). Thanks babe for the great gift! read more

Very pretty salon with a nice Pacific island serenity feeling. They display local artists' works on their walls and are available for purchase. I was here for a Yelp event yesterday evening. Everyone had the option of two different services to try, I chose makeup consultation and hair style. The makeup experience was very cool. Meredith introduced me to a new line of products and demonstated how easy it was to look great without spending more than 3 minutes in the morning. I might even venture from the stuff I've been using for years now, it was that good of a demonstration. I have a feeling that they might be pretty pricey, though. Andrea did my hair, and wow, I thought I was just going to get suggestions. She did some scissor magic and bang, I had bangs. Bangs! I loved the results and will give her a try again. I've been seeing Jeremy Novak for about a year and can't thank him enough for restoring my hair and making me feel beautiful. First time I visited Jeremy, my hair was burnt and color was really uneven. He quickly came up with a plan to make my hair look better even after the first visit. After seeing him for a year, my hair looks healthy and my color is natural. It was my first time at Stylus. I decided to venture this place after seeing great reviews from yelp- moreover it is very close to where I live. Jacqui was my hair stylist- she was amazing! She knows her job very well and was super friendly- gave me an excellent head and neck massage while shampooing my hair. At the end I was very happy with the style and length of my hair. The staff is also very friendly and takes care of their clients very well. It is a very affordable place in Belltown standards - yet with superior service and great ambience. I will definitely recommend this place to my other friends needing a change to their hair salons/stylists. read more
