Yelp offers a way to send the same project to multiple businesses, and I'm lucky it does! Jacob, at Stump Grinding Northwest, was quick to respond on Yelp (5/3/26) and by text after I sent him my information. He set expectations up clearly that he'd try to make room to stop by for a free estimate the same week and would let me know 1-3 days in advance. He also informed us that he typically gets the work done the same day if the quote is accepted - nice! I heard from Jacob on Wednesday, 5/6/26, that he had space for our estimate the following day. He confirmed he'd be there in the morning and sent us an eta of 8:30 around 8:00. The quote was fair and he explained the reasons for the range. A little after starting the grinding, Jacob had me come down to look at the progress. He showed me the depth he was going to (~8in) and the massive, melon-sized, carbide teeth-breaking rocks he was dealing with in the earth. He passed along some info about stump grinding blades and then continued his work. We checked out the final product together around 10am, and he said he'd come back if we found any remaining stump not to our liking. Jacob said he'd send an invoice later that day with the charges. We chatted for a bit about trees, insurance, and home ownership; then he was on his way. Now I continue building out my garden on level ground! I contacted Jacob to discuss removing 13 stumps from my backyard. 10 of the stumps showed signs of rot and he suggested they'd be easy to remove myself with a Mattock Axe. After he gave me a quote, he said "let me know if you are able to do it yourself!". With that encouragement I took my Mattock Axe and was able to *relatively* easily pry out 10 of those stumps on my own! (by no means was it "easy", it took a LOT of muscle, but doing it with no help was very satisfying) With only three left (the smaller ones), I was able to dig around the stump to a depth of about 12 inches, found the lateral roots, made quick work with a sawzall and chainsaw and was able to pry those suckers out too! Yes, it took me two days of backbreaking work. It would have been WAY easier to hire Jacob, and he was a super friendly dude that built trust and credibility within seconds. I told my wife "I'm going to try this, if not, I will hire Jacob!" Well, here I am with a stumpless yard, and it was only because Jacob gave me some tips (and confidence) to give it a try myself. I called Stump Grinding Northwest in a moment of desperation. Due to another company's flakiness, I was left with chunks of stump in my yard just two days before I had a whole crew of contractors was coming to redo the whole back yard. I needed those stumps ground fast. I Googled "stump grinding seattle" and got Stump Grinding NW as the first result. I called them up and Jeff said they might be able to make it out that same day! A huge relief, given my tight timeframe. When they arrived, Jeff listened carefully to what I wanted: I wanted to get as deep as possible, and as close to the fence as possible. Jeff explained that going deeper is more expensive, because the deeper you go the more rocks there are to dull the cutting blade. He quoted me $500, which was more than I was hoping for (I had paid the previous company over $1,000 already), but I agreed. Jacob came out TWICE to attempt to grind down a large maple stump on my parking strip. He left a large 3-4 foot section of root easily 6 inches above grade. And when I pointed out what was left after his second attempt to completely grind down the stump, his response was to say "As a sump grinder, you have to stop at some point, otherwise you'll grind for 10's of feet beyond where the stump use to rest." My suggestion is to look elsewhere for a stump AND large root grinder. read more
